Abandoned Grand National 1993 BBC Highlights Horse Racing
Переглядів 183 тис.13 років тому
This is the Grand National horse race from Saturday 3rd April 1993. The race was 'run' around 4pm that day, but had to be abandoned as after a second false start some riders did not actually realise this and took their horses around the entire course! This clip is from 'Match of the Day The Road to Wembley' aired that evening (also on the programme was the Sheff Utd vs Sheff Wed FA Cup Semi-Fin...

Broadcast on Sunday 21st April 1991 this is the programme after the Rumbelows League Cup Final. The match finished Man Utd 0 Sheff Wed 1 (HT 0-1), so Wednesday fans were keen to carry on watching any extra coverage. Instead Yorkshire Television (broadcasting in Sheffield) decided to show 'War of the Monster Trucks', and it was left to other regions to broadcast after-match coverage. This covera...
Why didn’t they just put their fkn hand up and say ready set go
What a cock up
2:00 "wont be gone long". They were gone a good while as it turned out. 😂
I was at my nieces wedding on that day.
Come back you idiots!
Its now 2023 and the Blades have been the top team in Sheffield for 24 years ❤️👏⚔️⚔️⚔️
24 years my arse
Wednesday will always be the biggest club in Sheffield
I remember that day well one of the TV Presenters said that this would never happen " even in a point to point in a backward little country like Ireland "
There's nothing backward about Ireland.
🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
Those protesters are more likely to cause injury or death to the Horses the way they go on .....complete morons
How the poor little flag man got blamed for this was an absolute disgrace. x.
This was the darkest day in the history of Horse Racing.
Annie Power?
I was missing my 1st national since I remember watching it in 1976 for a a swansea football game that was eventually called off so I got to watch the race.then it was void.the irony
Lol cork looks about 60 , he must of had a heavy paper sack as a kid.
Bowler hatted men, idiots, pissed up.
Keith Browne, what a wanker, what does he want a total straight line, fu--ing idiot.
You couldn't make it up,!!!!!!!!!!!!
UNBELIEVABLE.
Once AGSIN.animal rights imbeciles are The ones who actually cause the cruelty .Each & EVERYONE of them need to be impounded for lufe .YES there has been abuse to ALL forms if our planets life BUT generally it is UNSEEN by such as ARA
Curious how John White didn't go for fbe whip once on Esha Ness
I haven't been back since they refused my win a few years back.My gallant horse ears pricked clearly passed the line first.ok he threw off the rider on the first fence, but that's just unnecessary weight......
All that money and a bit of tape yanked up at the start
This is fucking hilarious 😂 Going on like its some great tragedy. "Dark day". Get a grip 😆 It's about as tragic as the Oscars La La Land/Moonlight debacle (I.e. not at all and maybe even quite a bit funny)
I've no interest in horse racing, but somebody told me about this fiasco so I thought I'd have a look. If horse racing was like this every time, I'd certainly have an interest.
A sport still governed by military hierarchy and hooray Henrys, most of whom were never serious professionals in racing and were nothing more than journeymen - they aren't for learning anything and seemed most put out when they were held to account for ruining the '93 National. Bowlers hats, tweed, rank corruption, bone ignorance and contempt of the public is their way of running racing. They didn't act on the Panorama corruption proof either which says it all. Rotten to the damned core. To top the lot they've downgraded the National course into a weaker test.
They should learn Marshalling from F1.
The contrast between this fiasco and the European Grand Prix at Donington the following weekend on Easter Sunday couldn't be starker.
They should have taken the prizemoney and distributed it equally between all who lined up at the tape, maybe they did i don't know.
I remember watching the Alan Cork goal, and my friend laughing... 'He's an old man!'
2:00 Horse right at the back "Hey... hey where you all going?"
David Pipe is surely a Day Today character, not a real Jockey Club spokesman.
I was there
Absolutely staggering that they managed to get the race going for over 150 years before 1993 and then the starting mechanism let them down. This wasn't a kids sports day. One of the biggest races in the world.
Almost exactly the same distance out as Gazza’s two years earlier, but slightly more to the right of goal. Nothing between the quality of either.
The animal right whatever were just freaking out the horses.
I got married this year I'm still going round I'm at fence 27 now
Well Des always says that it's the practicality of the situation.
it is a very cruel event which is why i dont watch it -im a devoted equestrian & devoted equestrians dont watch the national
‘It’s a very cruel event which is why I don’t watch it’ Says the person watching it
THATS SILLY TALK.
@@andymatthews7617 youre not an equestrian thats why you make a comment like that so I have to disagree . Whipping a poor horse to make it run faster & people baying at them & counting on their horses to win is cruel
@@sarabrown3821 are you an equestrian ???I you take time out to inspect todays air cushioned whips, you would see they cannot harm a horse in any way, a few years ago I would have agreed with you, but not today, I myself would like to see a month of horse racing without the whip just to see what, if any difference it makes, but do look at todays whips, and talk to people who use them day in and day out, most of the grooms of racehorses today are females, believe me if they thought the whip was in any way, harming their great stead the would be up in arms, and rightly so.
only one group will enjoy this abandoned the grand national and that is the animal right activities
what a pettooo
should have had loudspeakers at every jump
He had one job to do
They had no chance of re staging the race, why did they ever think about it ?
@Boris The Blade Probably right. An early version of BLM!
Put a bowler hat on a man and you're guaranteed a fuck-up. Much worn in the civil service.
Put lights on all fences
That wouldn't be the best idea, in all honesty. Racehorses are extremely sensitive and wired during a race and any sort of distraction like that might cause all sorts of chaos.
@@scsutton1 The 1967 race would be a good case in point.
Thank god no horse was killed
That tape was a nightmare. Compared to starts today I cant belive they expected 35 horses to line up quietly side by side for an even start.
Why?
@@marcospark2803 are you stupid? Why dyou think?
Well look at the race today 2024 31 years later 20 horses in with a chance 2 fences out It’s like the STEWARDS CUP ❤
They used the tape for years previously.
@@melgrant7404 That starting gate was replaced with a push button system where the tape rises 2.5 times quicker. They also introduced walking starts instead of standing starts. Ironically this year's National should have been a standing start again, but it didn't quite happen.
A FARCE, any jockey that ran the whole race should have been suspended for the rest of the jumps season!
The Grand National That Never Was. And I was there. Stood just past the Canal Turn with my Black & Red Manchester United umbrella. I only missed the year after because this one put me off from going. My last time there was in 1995.
The starter had to get a police escort away from the course, nearly got lynched
10:32 "The foremost sporting spectacle in the world" Not the Olympics then? Or the football World Cup?
Why don't they have lights at the first fence no question then
4:55 "ritchie barkers having a nosh" hahahaha fuckin brilliant! Wawaw
Very sad day for racing, I was there as I had been for the previous 11 years, I came back the following year and again in '95, '96 and the bomb scare year '97. I've been back to Aintree since '97 for supporting days but never again to my favourite race the Grand National.
Oh was it in 1997. Because I thought the bomb scare was in 1994. So am glad have seen what you have said now.
