Deliberate Adversity - A Counter to Modern Comfort
Our lives today are more comfortable than ever in human history. Why then are we suffering so much? One theory is that the increase in our modern comforts correlate with our inability to cope with the discomforts of our "first world problems."
To counter this phenomenon, we propose a practice of introducing deliberate adversity into our lives. The deliberate inclusion of adversity is especially important as children develop into adults. Without overcoming adversity in childhood, it would be very difficult for young adults to deal with failure, be resilient, and overcome the much more adverse circumstances of adult life. The broader societal effects could include the dramatic increase in mental health issues we've seen in recent years.

Balancing Interventionism versus Isolationism both at Home and Abroad
Переглядів 10Рік тому
One of the core tenets of Humanism is that we humans can make our future better. To do that, though, we have to be involved in our family, community, and world affairs. One of the great challenges in global involvement is carefully balancing the need to engage with the risk of imperialism (thinking you know best). The same holds true even at the individual level - you can't want to fix a percei...

The Meaning Life, the Fear of Death, and Setting Goals for the New Year

As we end one year and start a new one, it is a good time to reflect on how we give our lives meaning, how we consider death, and how those two ideas should help us to orient our goals in life. A few weeks ago, my grandmother died at age 97. She lived an amazing life. Going back for the funeral, it was amazing to me to hear the collection of stories told my the 13 of her grandchildren - all of ...

It's mixed. On one hand, our society is built on ever increasing consumerism. Other the other ... well, it's centere...
Thanksgiving as a Practice - Being Human Service

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year. First, I love food - a lot. Any holiday centered around sharing food with family and friends is my idea of paradise. Second, and probably more important as a Humanist, is that the holiday helps us to focus on giving thanks. Thanksgiving, though, doesn't have to be something we celebrate only once a year. To give thanks and be grateful can and sho...

    I was born, after 72 hrs labour, 2 mos. premature and autistic. I went on to almost die 150X in m y first 18 mos. in an incubator. I was 'saved' for what-a long, stupid life of poverty. How I wish I were simply born gay, why I might have a degree or a trade, I might be able to make money like everyone else. There are far worse fates than simply being gay.

    No. Being gay is not genetic. Is no such thing as gay/straight genes. Not backed by science. Provide sources. Don’t need science to teach civility. That said, as long as you’re happy, and not hurting anybody? Who gives AF what you do in privacy of your own home? Ik the gay people Ik, just don’t like their politics. Otherwise, it’s generally pretty easy to get along

Parents are parents, you have no right to accuse them of not supporting their kids.....the kids are being indoctrinated by woke teachers and tutors to the point it's now almost cool for the kids to say their gay or trans..... Its indoctrinating teachers you should be attacking, not parents! 🤔

    People can't even pick up the garbage in their streets. Positive words always sound good, but just like communism and socialism, false hope always sounds good just like a drug feels good. Our modern civilization is here because of fossil fuels and will soon be gone whether we burn them or not. It's easy to be hopeful and difficult to admit the painful truth. Adding additional complexity to a system that is already overly complex is a terrible path that will ultimately lead to the destruction of the world civilization. Humans do not need greater governmental control and bureaucracy. Humans need greater individual freedom to live their lives as they please. Trust the Founding Fathers, Bill of Rights, and the US Constitution. The Founding Fathers knew this time would come because they studied the previous civilizations that had already collapsed.

    • @beinghumanchurch
      @beinghumanchurch Рік тому

      Erik, thanks for watching and commenting! I think we're actually on the same page here for the most part. Our modern civilization IS here because of fossil fuels. That is exactly the sort of increasing complexity I'm referring to. Another way to describe complexity as I'm using it might be to call it an increasing interconnectedness of ideas, people, and technology. I'm not advocating for making things more complex or complicated for their own sake. I don't necessarily agree with your second set of assertions though. We the people created government to escape the state of nature (chaos), which Hobbes described as "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short." The state of nature is all freedoms with no rights or restrictions. If pure freedom was the goal, we'd just abolish government and all do as we please. However, the safety, security, and prosperity we've come to enjoy would be gone as well. Therefore, there is some balance point between pure freedom and complete government control of all things (and I'd argue the U.S. is much more laissez-faire than modern narratives make it out to be). We can and absolutely should debate about what the balance between those ideas should be. That's the virtue of a democratic republic. I do agree that the Constitution is a good starting point for framing out a government. That said, any system of government requires a citizenry that supports and maintains it. Just like a car or any other machine, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. So, my overall argument is that we, the people, have to believe in and care for our complex societal system. Thanks again for keeping the conversation going!

This speaks for every human being in this world be it someone religious, someone who is a activist, and even the people that make thing uncomfortable it all plays back to attitude. My attitude is to tolerate and respect everyone around me and treat them with kindness, i don't agree with people be in so many things but that should not prevent me to treat them like a person.

    Well, this is my very first talk ever posted on UA-cam or anywhere on the internet. I DO wish I had not accidentally said "light-years" when I meant "miles" (referring to the distance that Voyager 1 was from Earth). Oh well. My other observations are that the video quality is low (not sure why - usually I have clear video on my camera) and the auto captioning got a few words wrong (ex: "top" instead of "talk" and "motive" instead of "mote of" dust). But I guess it's ok. Let me know what you think!

      No problem, it wasn’t one line in particular, it was the whole thing. I was wondering if you have any thoughts on the ethical decision making method of Stoicism which is based on virtue. It seems to be something that can compliment the Humanist philosophy.

    • @beinghumanchurch
      @beinghumanchurch 4 роки тому

      @@vesper8385 Definitely. The early Stoics weren't necessarily humanists, but humanists can take useful ideas from any philosophy. I think virtue is much neglected in public discussions of ethics these days. We tend to think something is unethical because it harms others, whereas virtue theorists suggest that we harm ourselves when we do something unethical. Have you been reading the Stoics? What about Plato? I always like to start with Plato.

    Judgment Versus Opinion BY MADISYN TAYLOR Judgment closes us down and is final, whereas opinion leaves us open-hearted and open to change. Most of us understand that when we judge someone, or someone judges us, it is a negative emotional experience. As a result, we naturally want to avoid being judgmental, but this gets confusing when we feel we have to suppress thoughts that could actually be offering us guidance. For example, we may meet someone new and suppress a negative feeling about them, thinking that we don't want to fall into the trap of being judgmental. Later, though, it may turn out that paying attention to that thought could have helped us take care of ourselves or someone else. It is important to learn to distinguish inner guidance, and having an opinion, from judgment, otherwise we run the risk of not listening to our intuition and not allowing ourselves to form opinions. Inner guidance and opinions both help us to interact more intelligently in the world, so we don't want to throw them out in an effort to avoid being judgmental. Our intuition usually makes itself known to us in a flash, and often has a physical component--a flutter in our stomachs, sweaty palms, or a chill. When we use this information to help us navigate a situation, we always benefit. Similarly, having an opinion about a person or an idea allows us to converse about it in a focused way with intention. Listening to our intuition and forming opinions are both positive outcomes of our ability to interpret the information that comes our way. When we make a judgment, on the other hand, we attempt to have a final say on whether someone or something is inherently good or bad. Judgments close us down instead of opening us up; opinions have a lighter quality and are amenable to change. Once a judgment has been made, there is no more conversation or consideration, whereas opinions invite further debate. Intuition guides us from moment to moment, but, unlike judgment, never makes a final decree. In other words, it is only healthy to be open to the information we receive and to allow ourselves to process that information. As long as we stay open and fluid, we can trust that we have not fallen prey to the trap of judgment.
