Love your videos, any plans to do a video from Grantham to Lincoln Central or vice versa in the near future?
@@RichardSizer-f1z Hi Richard, thanks for the message, maybe look at it next summer 👍
Didn't manage to get this year so, nice to see the layouts.
@@MrMiketoase was a good turn out
The late John (Fingers) Fletcher, who was amongs other positions a NYMR footplate inspector and ex BR footplateman, often spoke to drivers about leaving the steam drain cocks open too long. It's used to expel water from the cylinders after a loco has been stood for a while, however it only takes a short distance to expel water.
@@josephbooth4954 my dad, ex footplate crew said the same thing.

What a joke! That's not how you drive a 37! Leave it on the the throttle and don't do quick bursts!
@@CDMtransport I did wonder why it was done like that, unless it was to keep the noise down.

@ chears mate👍
What a fantastic class of loco the 37s are. Over 50 years of heavy haulage and still with us. Thank you for sharing.
@@geordieceltic2 they are absolutely fantastic and long may they last.
Always find it funny to think that the same 37s that hauled steam locos off to scrap and hauled brand new (slam door) units from the manufacturers have now hauled those units off to scrap, and the ones that replaced them (Mk3 based), and will probably be around to be hauling Electrostars, Desiros, even Aventras, Civities and Stadlers on their final trips too.
@ that’s because they were built properly and been maintained properly. 👌
@@ChrisCooper312 Good point, it is quite astounding when you think about it.
Many thanks for sharing this with us…. I miss the type 68 starting and going through York.
@@pipandkitty2004 you’re very welcome, glad you enjoyed.
It looks like a con. The crew of the Black 5 were completely unsighted when the train moved off over the level crossing with venting steam and clearly the Class 25 was operating under load as it entered the tunnel. Fantastic bit of stage craft.
@@RobinMcKinlay the Black 5 had just returned to service following complete overhaul, I think they were trying to ease her back in.
Glorious sight and sound!! The 37 is my favourite diesel locomotive.
@@Madonsteamrailways fantastic beasts aren’t they.

I think that when the new platforms are opened Bank Top will become an oversized pigeon roost.
Only the branch lines will use the new platforms.
@Discoretrox no, the new platforms are on the main line and the idea is to avoid main line trains using the current station. The branch trains will use the current station.
My uncle Percy, a mainline top link driver on the LMS, swore by Black Five locos. 'Gimme a Black Five any day instead of a Princess Royal Class (PRC). The Black Five can crap all over a PRC in terms of driving and firing. PRC's are the biggest heap of scrap ever devised by the LMS. Poor steaming heaps of junk that you have to work your back off to keep moving along the track.' His repertoire had included Patriot, Jubilee, Royal Scot, but mainly Princess Coronation Class (PCC) locomotives on turns out of Euston on the West Coast Mainline Route. His career had included firing PCC locomotives with full streamlining way back in the 1930's. I knew him as a lad back in 1964 in the twilight of his career. Interesting as both my grandfathers were 45 year enginemen driver veterans of the GCR/LNER/BR, one uncle became a senior instructor at BR later driving 4000 Kestrel, and three other uncles were firemen on the LNER/BR. When uncle Percy visited there always was the usual discursive rivalry between LMS and LNER enginemen concerning locomotives. The smell of steam locomotives. How I miss it. It is in my blood. The line to Shirebrook Colliery was only about 400 feet from where I lived, and there was a disused station. I was always around the steam locomotives, and they were always around me in my youth. I miss them.
@@MrMoggyman they are absolutely fantastic machines.
@@KevsTrains I totally agree. Nothing sounds, smells, looks like a steam locomotive. For me steam is in my blood. My ancestors lived for the steam locomotive engineman life, because that is what it was. It was not a job, but rather a way of life.

As a train spotter in the 50s I used to take little notice of black fives. There were so many of them. Today they look beautiful. A former driver once told me he could get 90mph out of a black five. Excellent machines.
@@keithalexander3386 they are beautiful machines and sound fantastic too.
Black Five on the 7-10pm from St. Pancras to Nottingham I timed at 90MPH down the hill from Ampthill to Bedford in the 1950's.
It is all part of the show. Give the punters a great show. Of course the need to clear water out of the cylinders, but this engine looked a little light for its train so it may be going to add a pusher for the not insignificant climb with a full train of heavy Pullmans with vans.
@@briancooper562 no pusher for these trains

@@KevsTrains yeah true
Does the UK have defect detectors on its railways? Or is that strictly a US thing? If they do, can you please get a video of some of them so I can hear what a UK defect detector voice sounds like?
We don’t have them
Why do UK diesels have two tone horns?
They were fitted with hi and low tone horns to make sure the maximum amount of people could hear them, due to a range of human hearing abilities, some hear high times others low tones.
@@KevsTrains I'm from the US and find it fascinating that UK diesels have two tone horns while diesels here in the states have multi-chime horns. Also, what's with the Flying Scotsman's whistle? It sounds like the way a recorder sounds when you blow too hard into it.
@@haydenthetoyologist4117 our steam engines have various whistles or chimes depending on where and who manufactured them.
