Great explaination of the Reilly Palette! Especially the overview you did. Thank You!!!
Thanks Chris.
Thank you … great explanation! Love your work too 😊x
Extremely helpful as I approach a complex outdoor lighting situation. Much appreciated!
15 minute portrait, thats amazing, you do amazing work Thank you for your videos
This is absolutely beautiful. I really appreciate your selfless sharing of knowledge and secrets. Is there any book on composition that you recommend? Thanks a ton. 😊🙏🏼
One of the best books I’ve ever read on composition was written by Early California Impressionist great Edgar Payne. Out of print for some time, it’s available again. Here’s a link - www.amazon.com/Composition-Outdoor-Painting-Edgar-Payne/dp/0939370115
Hi! You mentioned in the previous video to put a drop of clove oil on your paint mixtures to keep them from drying out. My question is won't that keep them from drying on the support. I heard of putting the clove oil on a cotton ball and then seal off the palette, but never to put it directly on the paints themselves. Thank you 🙏🏽
As a working professional, I almost never use clove oil these days. That’s simply because I need the paint to dry at a faster pace for production purposes. That said, as a “night and weekend” artist I used clove oil all the time. It helped the set palette to live quite well between painting sessions. To be specific, I would mix a drop into each pile of paint as it was being mixed, prior to placing it up into the palette’s grid. I’d then paint (maybe all day, if it was a Saturday) with the freshly set palette. While wrapping up for the evening, I’d place another drop directly on each pile of paint and then seal the entire palette with plastic wrap, pressing it down onto the glass around palette perimeter. If memory serves, I had one palette last for over a month using that method. What I’ve just shared was taught to me by one of my mentors that worked directly with Frank Reilly. Hope that helps.
Never seen an artist like you. Please provide a demo of your process.
Great Artist.

Bravo👏 Amazing & impressive demonstration of your incredibly detailed, intricate, & sophisticated artistic process. Very beautiful & enjoyable to behold. As someone whom cannot paint nor draw at all, I am especially blown away by your craft & artmaking process; the time, skill, subtlety, & attention to detail is brilliant. And the final result is such a handsome painting, full of life & physical depth & texture. Best, Doug Graves
You’re very kind, thanks!!
Love your work. Fantastic!
Thanks!
Another brilliant video, S.C.!! Thanks!!!!
You’re such a good man Michael, thanks!
Interesting to see this part of your preparation process. It would also be very instructive to know how you made your choices of colors for this painting, because to me - beyond the great light and shapes - that's what gives its very peculiar mood.
It's a bit complicated. I've read where Sorolla used to say, "The money's in the greys". I usually try to build analogous color harmonies, balanced with opposing greys.
Thank you so much for these, was wondering what kind canvas you like most
You're welcome! Fredrix PRO Antwerp DP (Double Primed) is my current favorite

In your opinion, what would be a good resource for more information on the Reilly palette? I'm looking for more color examples.
I'd say Apollo (Nick) Dorian's book - "Values for Pictures Worth a Thousand Words" is the most technically robust volume available on Frank Reilly's method. I knew Nick Dorian personally ... a wonderful man that used to be one of Reilly's class monitors. Nick was determined to get the information out there before it was lost. Consequently he self-published the book out of his own pocket-back when it was hard to do. I should add, there's one section Nick put in his book that wasn't part of Reilly's teaching. It's called "Planes" and begins on page 85 (in the copy I have). After the first paragraph or two, it devolves into a "how to manual" on sheet metal forming. Nick told me he decided to include it, after his years teaching the material in High School. He also told me he used to get phone calls, at all hours of the day and night … from around the world … after publishing his book. Amazon has two versions of Nick's book, one digital, the other paperback. Nick worked hard to include a plastic grey scale with his book. The last paperback copy I bought still had the scale included. Here's a link to the paperback version - www.amazon.com/Values-pictures-Worth-Thousand-Words/dp/B0099WP26M/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= I should add, I've personally used the Reilly system for over 45 years, and consequently know it quite well. Some out there might get miffed when I say, Frank Reilly always felt his system was for commercial artists-period. There's more I could say about that, but won't. My point is, I suggest you take what's shared regarding Frank's palette, etc. and make it your own. Experiment ... plug other colors into the grid (according to their value/hue) that seem to make sense to you ... and see how they work. Play around, you might be pleasantly surprised! At its core, the palette is really about getting your values under control, which is huge. Hope that helps!
@@s.c.mummert6263 Wow...I wasn't expecting such a nice detailed response which I thoroughly appreciate. Thank you for the recommendation, I'll get that book. Thanks again not only for responding but for all the hard work you put into making videos. I'm a retired tv news broadcaster (NBC) and I know there's a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes in making videos that few people know about, but I certainly do and I appreciate your efforts and this channel. -Regards
You're very kind, thanks! Honestly, I appreciate my audience and am happy to pass it along!
What Frank taught was to paint straight with oil of clove
Interesting Paul ... what was your source for that?
A friend said mix in and directly paint with it it doesn't yellow
I'm sure your friend meant well Paul, and others have used clove oil as a medium in the past. Personally, I'd never heard of Frank Reilly endorsing clove oil as a medium to his students. Just to be sure, I contacted one of Frank's students (I've worked with three over the years) and he confirmed: Reilly used clove oil as an additive to the piles of paint, to extend palette life-not as a medium. Hope that helps!
What's the oil and turns ratio Reilly used in his paintings
Sorry Paul, I don’t understand your question regarding “turns ratio”. As to oil: Reilly suggested his students use clove oil to prolong the life of their palettes. One drop into each pile while mixing, before placing it up onto the grid.
@@s.c.mummert6263 do you use oil and turps how much of each, or is it just paint and oil of clove to dilute the paint on the canvas
Oil to turps ratio or he painted with clove oil in the paint
Personally, I normally use a 50/50 mix of Refined Linseed Oil & Gum Turpentine as a medium. Hope that helps!
Excellent video ...thanks for posting
My pleasure
I've become a real fan of yours! Complimenti davvero!!!!!
Thanks!
Thank you for the videos, love your work
Glad you like them!
This is an absolutely wonderfully straightforward explanation of light and shadows. I have to admit that this is hardly ever explained. Yet without this understanding, and expression in our paintings, they will tend to look dull and if not lifeless, then at the very least less than masterful. thanks for sharing.
Terrific video, my friend. I love seeing the examples of each art piece both as normally observed and with the computer showing the simplicity of the three values. This is a great reminder of the importance of simple values in our designs.
I havent heard many talk about Harvey Dunn but last year I went to the Harvey Dunn plein air event and got to see his museum featuring his works and even speak with some people who had know. Harvey. And incredible artist and seeing his works in person was truly a treat. When designing the tonal values like this at the beginning, where would you figure that out in the process, with thumbnails? And how does it keep you on track when you’re later in the painting process? Thank you
In my case, it’s a bit fluid. What I mean by that is, I’ll either run with a concept that’s loosely based on “seed” images … or create something entirely on the computer before the shoot. Working with live models is incredibly nuanced, where even minor changes in body language can dramatically affect what’s communicated. The information we take in nonverbally is astonishing. So either way I’m adapting on the fly during a shoot. Once that phase is done, I’ll continue to modify the composition … even major elements, on the computer. However, as mentioned in the video, the core value structure set down at the very beginning is maintained throughout. Hope that helps!
@@s.c.mummert6263 thank you. That’s very helpful.

@s.c.mummert6263 hi! Are you familiar with the work of a Venezuelan painter named Armando Reveron? His painting shows some interesting ideas about how to deal with light in the tropics vs in the Mediterranean

Glad you enjoyed it!
Good talk...your paintings are as good as well!
I appreciate that!
Great lesson! The painting is incredible but the horizon should be a bit higher so that it’s not at the same level as her eyes.
How do you keep your palette stay wet to paint for.... days?
I normally cover it with clear plastic wrap between painting sessions. Adding a drop of clove oil into each pile of paint (while mixing) will also prolong the working life of your paint.
Great. Can you use a mid grey background, white hard on the eyes.
Expand on what you mean John …
Thank you! I understand shadows much better now.
