Welcome to the Ocean Research Project's channel, where you get to follow our oceanography expeditions in the Arctic and around the World.
Plastic Pollution Discovery Across Chesapeake Bay
18 million people along the Chesapeake Bay are unaware of how big the plastic pollution in the bay has gotten. Woodard & Curran Foundation sponsored the local non-profit Ocean Research Project (ORP) to make their impact, to set sail and address the distribution and abundance of microplastic pollution across 15 environmentally monitored regions. Sailentist, Nicole Trenholm lead the science team, she is motivated for a future where we can monitor and score plastic pollution in future watershed report cards and to help EPA define pollution thresholds and reduction goals. Captain Matthew Rutherford helped her transform the SRV Marie Tharp for optimal microplastic sampling and low-carbon operations under sail. Together they spearheaded the exploration to unravel the truth about severity of bay-wide microplastic pollution while results provoke further questions. Please support their continued work in microplastic pollution monitoring. www.oceanresearchproject.com

Since 2015, Ocean Research Project 501c3 is grateful for the sponsorship with RBR in the ongoing coastal investigation of the Arctic's glaciated coastline. With RBR profiling sensors our team has captured hundreds of observations of the exchange of ocean and fjord water masses, tracing the pathway of warm water currents and observing the biogeochemical response.

You have a sail for a reason. Broken engine is no problems you can still sail to shore and brake with the anchor or on a boye. Ive done it plenty of times but with a 30 ft. Maybe a lot harder with 42 ft boat. If you have too much wind you do a quick 360 turn before port to slow down then release the sails as you move in. Big round fender in the front could also be used if you impact.
Should’ve stolen it for myself, free boat
Sailboat engines were not made to tow boats.
If they did want the boat they have could left it to me this guy with no place to really 😢
I've got some miles under a keel. The old saying, don't abandoned ship until you have to step onto your life raft. Easier said than done I guess, some people give up too soon in my opinion.
Split up and sail both boats?
Guys this is so embarrassing but this is my sailboat and I got distracted let me know where it's at and I'll go grab it asap
Has anyone ever watched that movie called "The Boat". It's a must see. It's about an abandoned sailboat. Great movie
This is scary stuff
This makes me wonder HOW MANY of those are still out there, doing a endless journey
Free upgrade from a 42 to 48
pls explain to a non-sailor, why didn't one of them sail the boat?
Dang sea hippies can’t leave stuff alone
Stop the madness. Some say he was courageous,an adventurer.Living his unrealistic dreams. He was a fool creating danger and danger to other peoples lives the Coast Guard Navy, the local marine authorities, his relatives, his friends he’ll probably get a medal for being one of the dumbest people on the planet. Oh, but maybe he’s rich and that makes it OK it’s OK let’s just all abandon our yachts out in the middle of the ocean and just go home. What a fun day.
What is the law on salvage ? If they abandoned it offshore it falls under maritime law. Salvage rights go to who finds it is my understanding.
Lucky you weren't got caught on a storm😮
Just take All The stuff -🙄🙄
you'd smell bodies long before seeing em
is there a moral to this story ?
In February of 2013, Alan McGettigan and his crew were rescued from the Sailboat Swan 48, Wolfhound, around 70 miles off the coast of Bermuda. McGettigan, who died in November of 2022, was joined by fellow Royal Irish Yacht Club members Declan Hayes and Morgan Crowe as well as Tom Mulligan from the National Yacht Club on the yacht, which had suffered both power and engine failure amid stormy conditions while en route from Connecticut to that year’s RORC Caribbean 600. Also - Alan McGettigan, Declan Hayes, Morgan Crowe, and Tom Mulligan, are all the most "sailor" sounding names I've ever heard in my life. 😂
The proud new owner of of a yacht..congrats
You guys are awesome 👏👏👏
Finders keepers rules apply here or what?
He should have salvage rights the boats his.
Nice… free boat, finders keepers
Should have towed by rules of the sea it would then be hours
Finders keepers?
Love what you do Matt.
800 miles from bermuda is not the middle of know where
01:10 Jump scared me.
Should pump water out she would’ve been lighter to pull
I was under the impression that one could legally acquire a boat found adrift under the laws of fair salvage.
That is correct.
the world is truly f@cked.
There are literal thousands of abandoned boats on the waters. It's not unusual whatsoever
Finders keepers right?
Pity you had to abandon the tow. You could’ve claimed salvage of a perfectly good vessel inappropriately abandoned by a scared crew.
Well did you go back out to retrieve it?
Nautor Swan 48 Value The Swan 48 is a highly valued sailboat, known for its elegant lines, reputation, and resale value. It is widely considered to be one of the most iconic bluewater sailing designs of all time. Resale Value The Swan 48 has a strong resale value, with many owners praising its ability to hold its value over time. This is due in part to its high-quality construction, classic design, and reputation for being a reliable and seaworthy vessel. Price Range The price range for a Swan 48 can vary depending on the age, condition, and location of the boat. However, based on current market trends, here are some approximate price ranges for new and used Swan 48 models: New Swan 48 models (2019 and later): €600,000 - €800,000 (approximately $670,000 - $900,000 USD) Used Swan 48 models (2003-2018): €300,000 - €600,000 (approximately $340,000 - $670,000 USD) Vintage Swan 48 models (1971-1995): €150,000 - €300,000 (approximately $170,000 - $340,000 USD) Value as a Performance Cruiser The Swan 48 is also highly valued as a performance cruiser, offering a great balance of speed, comfort, and seaworthiness. Its design and construction make it an ideal choice for both racing and cruising, and its value as a performance cruiser is reflected in its price range. Value as a Collector’s Item The Swan 48 is also highly valued as a collector’s item, with many owners and enthusiasts seeking out vintage models for their rarity and historical significance. The value of a vintage Swan 48 can vary depending on its condition, age, and provenance, but it is generally considered to be a highly sought-after and valuable collector’s item.
If it's in international waters then it's your boat !
DAMN! almost had a really nice salvage!!
jesus being stuck in the ocean without a motor and no wind does not sound fun
I knew some one once who sold his boat an scuba gear. He was up on main mast repairing his main sail line. While the rope came apart and was caught up on the ring. He was looking down while he worked the rope fibers loose from the ring and saw a huge oblong shadow right under the boat whisk four huge fins and a long neck turn over suddenly and disappear into the depths. It was watching him waiting for him to get into the water.
The abandoned 48’ boat was obviously cursed. Be happy you escaped with your lives.
Would have been a great salvage $$$
Esse barco estava destinado a não aportar nunca mais. Quase que adquiriu a desgraça dele para o seu barco. Era de Poseidon.
I don’t know why you wouldn’t just sail the other boat…
Payday salvage!
Fail, guess not...
Good work - thanks!
