Cleo - a pirate's tale - Kickstarter Trailer
i didn't get a notification for this one lol but the game looks great!
keeping track of where this is heading and imagining a similarly innovative story and charming characters as Cleo had, the adventure gaming world looks like to be in for a real treat (no pressure ;) )
An Guadn Rutsch ins Neie Joar wünsch i da a!
Haha! Danke =)
Man, I don't usually play Point and click games but I bought your debut Cleo game on the Switch and enjoyed every single moment of it! It is definitely in my list of top games of the year (the story, voice acting, puzzles... delightful!) 😊 It really blows my mind the process of creation that you posted here on youtube...you are really talented and your determination is admirable! I'm looking forward to your next creation. Liebe Grüße aus Spanien!
Oh wow. Thank you so so much for this nice comment! :) Im working hard to make this game as good as possible. Thank you for the motivation!!! :)
Once again, very interesting and helpful to see the progress. Thanks for your insights!
Thank you very much!! =)
Vielen Dank! =)
I muas sagn, dass des mit da Orangenen Farbe bei Teddy mir ned aufgfallen is... shame on me ^^
so hyped for this game!
Faszinierend.
Vielen Dank!!! =)
I recently replayed the redone version of Day of the Tentacle and I'm loving your artwork
Thank you very much!! =)
This looks amazing!
Thank you! =)
I loved Cleo! Solid game 🔥
Thank you very very much!!! =)
Oh wow, I'd love a Toonstruck-inspired game! Such an overlooked gem
True!!! Toonstruck is an awesome point and click adventure!!! Replayed it a few month ago and it still works! =)
Your work on these details is amazing. I can't wait to see the final game. ❤🧡💛💚
Thank you! It means a lot to me!! =)
Awesome video! The art work looks super beautiful. Also the grass generator using a curve looks really kool as well. Looking forward to your next devlog. Keep it up! :)
Thank you very much! =)
Any plan on characters casting their own shadow?
That's an exciting topic! But it's not planned at the moment. I will think about it when the character animations have been implemented and I have a better idea of the overall look of the levels and lighting etc. ✌
looks cozy , thanks for takeing us with you on this journey
Thank you so much! =)
How comfortable are you with Unreal Engine at this moment, if you compare it to Unity?
That is a difficult question to answer. I've spent a lot more time in Unity than in Unreal. On the other hand, I now have a much better background knowledge and understanding of GameDev topics. I certainly feel very comfortable in Unreal now and look forward to learning more and getting better with this Engine =)
It looks so amazing. I got these "Cleo" feel, but with a new twist. Can't wait to play this game! Good Job Christoph!
Thank you so much!!! That's great to hear, that you can sense a "Cleo"-Vibe =)
LG!
Congrats on getting these tedious items out of the way! Now on to the fun part! 🥳
Looks great, I love the attention to detail
Thank you! :)
Wow, the animations look really great and there are so many details in them. Really good. The fly turning the pages with ids mouth is hilarious 😂
Thank you so much!! :)
Beautiful cursor design! Seeing this I had a thought, that it is technically possible to animate a hardware cursor. It could be interesting to see how easing could be interpreted in that realm ;)
Thank you! Yes I think it would technically be possible. For example by swapping the cursor image every few frames. But I'm not sure on how performant it would be. But I think it is worth a try. :)
what about compiling your .CUR files and have the system use them in-game, think it's possible in Unreal? of course, without permanently changing the system cursor of even having them stay installed when uninstalling the game they should reside inside the game folder and only live as long as the game does by the way .CUR are probably static, don't think you can embed animations in there
Hey! Yes I think that is exactly what's happening at the moment with the hardware cursor. It is part of the packaged game and is used by the system as long as the game is running. :)
so all backgrounds are bitmap, what about different resolutions? do you think they'll scale well or will you need to have all the different sizes included in the final release?
I still have to make the final decision about the final resolution of the background images. But I don't want to do that until I've finished a few example scenes with all the details. At the moment, the resolution is roughly halfway between FullHD and 4K. But I think it will also be possible to adjust the resolution of the images via LODs/MipMaps depending on the requirements. I'll deal with this when the first test scenes are 100% complete and I can analyse the performance. =)
Loved the video. Insta added the game to wishlist
Thank you! :)
yep, I arrived at basically the same hybrid approach. One thing to improve a software cursor is to use mouse movement delta between frames, instead of cursor position. This makes a noticeable difference, however there might still be some lag due to frame caching. In Unity frame caching is 2 frames I believe, so the displayed object position will be 2 frames behind real time. When using mouse position directly, rather than movement delta - the lag varies wildly, because the polling can be extremely inaccurate compared to frames.
Ah, thats super interesting! I didn't know that. Thank you so much =)
The lag on software cursor is atrocious.
is this a unreal thing? Not sure if i've seen this option in unity. I like how you did the tilting of the labels
Thank you. I think it's the same in Unity, but it may not be called "hardware and software cursor". But as soon as you take a game object and place it at the position of the mouse cursor on the screen (in the update function), it is technically a software cursor - since it is frame dependent.
@@Christoph_Dev ah ha. yeah i can see how that would lag.
Neat. Well I'm still in the beginning stages of my adventure game, and at this point I'm almost settled on godot. However, I think you're the only dev I've seen use Unreal for a 2d point and click -- why not use something like godot?
Thank you! That's very easy to answer: I just REALLY wanted to learn Unreal. It is the engine that interested me the most and with which I would like to make more games in the future (if everything goes well). I wish you all the best and lots of success with your project! I really only hear good things about Godot! =)
@@Christoph_Dev - Thanks. A lot of people say Unreal is overkill for a 2d game, and also don't think much of blueprints. Actually I find mostly programmers don't like blueprints, however, most non-programmer types like blueprints pretty well.
@@Uhfgood Yes it may be a "overkill" for a small indie game - that's true. But I think the bigger problem is, that Unreal does not support 2D in the same way smaller engines do. So you have to find a lot of solutions that other game engines would provide out of the box. Im working with Unreal for about 9 month now and I have to say I absolutely love Blueprints!
In many similar games, I see the option to choose a softwarer cursor in the menu. This is sometimes useful for avoiding conflicts with overlays like f.lux. Thank you for the entertaining and informative video on this topic.
Yes that is true. It may be a good idea to implement the option to choose the software cursor. Thank you! =)
Nice, to-the-point explanation. Love the rotation trick on the tooltip! I will have to steal that solution for my own projects.
Hello. In UE you can setup hardware cursor if I'm right (in project settings)
The attention to detail, love it!
Thanks! :)
Have you considered more informative cursor ico s depending on context? For example when you mentioned a cursor for walkable areas, you displayed a simple arrow cursor. A boot/left/step icon would immediately carry information without the need for the player to know which type of arrow is for which type of function.
That's true. Yes I have considered that. For me it was important to habe the system working. I can edit the cursors very easily later on - so I will decide on that when I have some actual story content to play test. =)
Very nice and interesting! A very important topic indeed and I think you really nailed the look and feel! Love it!
Thank you! :)
That is an ingenious method to address a challenge while simultaneously producing an appealing effect from the solution. The game is looking great. Keep up the good work.
Thank you! =)
very elegant indeed
nice explanation of the difference, was not aware of that, so learned something :)
Remarkable achievement Christoph! Congratulations. It is a really, really good game! Also lots of love to your missus for all her hard work and support. This really really is a boot in my rear to get my own game started. Looking at this has given me a lot of great ideas on how to optimize my own development journey and how I can try to minimize the steeper costs that you had to tackle in your project.
Thank you for being clear and concise in your videos. I am a beginner as well and I have been going back and forward if it is better to animate outside of Godot where I can perform some rigging like in Blender, or to animate inside Godot.
What resolution do all your background and scenes get drawn in? What's in store for the next dev log?
Hey I just stumbled across your channel! I also use an iPad and procreate for game art!
lovely mate !!
Sehr, sehr geil.
