Hyundai i30N & Other Petrol N-Cars To Be Discontinued In Europe
It's the eNd of the road in Europe for the Hyundai i30N and other petrol-powered N Car models.
In this Hyundai N Car News video (the first in the series - let me know in the comments what you think of this concept) I talk through Hyundai's decision to discontinue the sale of new petrol-powered N Car models, such as the i30N and i20N, in the European market as of the end of 2024.
Like this video if you found it interesting, subscribe for more i30N and N Car content, and remember all comments are welcome (just try to keep it civil and on-topic)

Is the Hyundai i30N comfortable? Is it too harsh to be a decent daily driver? The answer is "it depends". It depends on what your expectations are, and how you drive and use the car. In this video I share my experience with the i30N's comfort and refinement to help you understand if you will be able to live with the Hyundai i30N as a sufficiently comfortable (for your needs) daily driver.

The i30N Fastback doesn't appear (from what I can gather) to have been that much of a sales success. Where I live, I see the odd 'regular' i30N on the roads but I've literally never seen another i30N Fastback except for the dealer's old demonstrator model (pre-facelift example). The problems with the i30N Fastback are simple to explain. You have to spend more and you basically get "less" car as...

The Hyundai i30N is almost universally praised for its driving performance and capabilities. But one area where it tends to fall short in professional reviews (and even many social media comments etc) is with respect to the interior. Many reviewers claim the interior is average at best, and full of cheap plastics, a lack of detail/flair and is overall not a great place to be compared to some co...

    Agree with the majority of what you have said. Has the interior dated?? 100% yes. The interior dates back to when the PD debuted in 2016. So now being 2024 that's 8 years. Looking at the other N products, i30N Sedan (Elantra N in the US) i20N & Kona N, all are lot more modern. I had a 2017 i30 SR which I then sold in 2023 for an i20N. While the interior still has a lot of plastic, the i20N still feels more modern & updated. While at first glance the digital dash of the other N products looks like it could be gimmicky, when you get used to it, it's anything but. The N products are more aimed at the driving enthusiast, rather than the daily commuter. I don't feel they need a more "upmarket" interior which in turn would make them more expensive. Much happier that the R&D $$ have gone on the driving enjoyment, rather than a tactile feel of buttons or a soft touch part that you wouldn't normally touch.

    I agree with you. Having owned several cars, including many ford fairlanes back in the day, the i30N is not quite as "premium", but I really love the balance of practicality, along with good design. I love the fact that there is a perfect balance of manual buttons for things like air con/temp, vents, lights, hazards, etc so you don't have to navigate a damned menu on a screen when driving. I love the steering wheel - all the "most used" functions are just 1 click away, and then many of the "not so frequently needed" functions, you can go digging into the menus on the screen for. Also love that Hyundai left the manual hand brake, and (most of all) the seats in the 2023 i30N premium are absolutely superb - they hug you just enough to be secure when driving a bit harder on winding country roads, while so comfortable for daily driving (they are even heated). I took a Leon Cupra for a test drive, and found it massively lacking in all of the above. Yes, more "premium" in terms of interior surfaces, but very poorly thought out layout and controls, and massively annoying using controls during driving (and also nowhere near as fun as the i30N). I give Hyundai 9.5 out of 10 for the i30N. In fact, the only real "criticism" would be for the speakers - OK for most, but a bit tinny if you are a proper music buff, but let's face it - I didn't buy the car for listening to music, I bought it because I love driving it, and when doing so, the radio is off, the engine is in N-Mode, and the windows are down and sunroof up and I'm smiling while listening to the engine pop and bang and do it's thing! Happy days..... ;-)

    I drive the regular version of the i30 fastback, 1.4 - 140 HP ... make some kind of video on the technical details of the car, but not so much as regards the car, but the fuel consumption itself - today the prices in the EU are high as far as gasoline is concerned and it is not the same if the car has a consumption of 4.8-6.0 like mine or the N version which probably has an average of about 7-7.5 L /100 km ... in addition to insurance in the EU - complete for a new vehicle with Casco insurance (at least as far as Croatia is concerned) it costs around 2000 eur/year. It's not a little.

Then i30n came which costs 40% then the most expensive one and so n customers were not from another league. Now i5N will cost 2x the current i30n price which is completely out of range for even Santa Fe customers. Especially that good enough Tesla is half of the price of N ev cars. That is sad, also because it’s pua of my budget too 😢

EVs cant be the only way, in Germany there are a lot of problems with the power suministration because of how much EVs are now being charged at night, for example. Also, not every country in the european union is Germany and the EVs are very expensive compared to petrol engines. Im from spain and the average age of cars are +15 years cause of the salaries. All of these changes can cause a lot of problems in some countries imo, lets see what happens

    I had an original i30N Hatch (2019) in Shadow Grey and it had the same seats as yours. Last year I upgraded to the post facelift model (Performance Blue hatch) this time with DCT. It has the sport, light-weight seats that you referred to. While the seats in the original model were more padded and very comfortable, the sports seats are less padded. However, they are still comfortable. We completed a road trip from Sydney to Brisbane and back, in the 2013 model, and did not have any problems with the seats. The only thing we missed was the memory settings (my wife drives it as well with different seat and mirror settings) as the sport seats are not electric.

    Could you talk about living with the DCT transmission. Are there any compromises? It it jerky at low speeds/coming to a stop/taking off slowly? Is the gearbox logic good or does it race to the highest gear possible when daily driving?

    • @i30NOwner
      @i30NOwner 7 місяців тому

      Sorry missed this comment - have had a busy week. I'm actually working on a specific DCT video for this channel, but long story short: * The DCT is very good at 'daily driving' IMHO as long as you use the appropriate drive mode setting (e.g. N mode with gearbox in auto will really hold you into a lower gear). For example eco mode will seek out the highest gear as quickly as possible so not great if you want performance. * I haven't noticed any jerkiness or hesitation, even when stone cold. * I do wish you could cruise in sport/N mode on open road and it go automatically into highest gear after a while (just to reduce fuel consumption) but normally in Sport/N I drive in manual mode anyway. Overall I think it's an excellent transmission. I'm glad I got the DCT over the manual for my needs (manual cars are more fun to hustle but I needed something a bit more practical)

      N DCT has wet clutches and is better refined then VW DSG. When slowing down to a stop you hear the gearbox working. Its not as refined as BMW ZF but its really superb as far as performance DCT goes. Especialy the N mode shifts are very good and you can manually preselect wanted gear (you dont have to wait for the gearbox to shift to next gear before requesting another one - like in bmw)

    Being in a swift sport what are the pro and cons from jumping into an I30N - none of the German brands really interested me due to brand association for hatchbacks. Or were out my price range due to not wanting to spend a lot of money on a depreciating asset.

    • @i30NOwner
      @i30NOwner 7 місяців тому

      I'm going to do a video on this very topic in the near future (I've recorded the audio just need to capture some more footage) but at a high level: Cons of upgrading to i30N * Swift Sport is much cheaper to run in terms of fuel (realistically uses half the fuel based on my recorded MPG/kmL figures for both cars). * Swift Sport will be cheaper to own/maintain when the cars get older and start needing more repairs * Swift Sport is more maneuverable/easier to drive in town * Swift Sport has adaptive/radar cruise control - huge miss on the i30N (I'm talking the current shape Swift here) * Swift Sport is more fun to "drive slow" at normal speeds as you have to work it harder ... you feel how light it is Pros * i30N sounds so much better - Swift sounds like a sewing machine * i30N interior is miles better (even if it isn't as good as the Civic Type R, Golf GTI etc) * i30N is more fun to drive hard when you have a higher speed limit road * Much nicer for motorway/open road driving * It's significantly more powerful - the Swift Sport is really a warm hatch, versus a proper hot hatch with the i30N * More practical in terms of boot space etc (although marginal on the fastback) * More comfortable * Better sound system, although not amazing * Proper DCT as opposed to sluggish auto if you want a non-manual option Overall I'd say it's worth it IF you value the fun factor highly. If all you want is just an about-town car for commuting and want to have a bit of fun (while not spending much on running costs) the Swift is actually better.

Thirdly, thanks for the kind comment about the video (all credit to my brother, Ben, who does the video capture and editing work ... I just come up with the script if that makes sense?) Your comment is basically why I started this channel. There is more online than ever needs be said about how quickly you can go from 0-100 or hustle around a racetrack. I'll leave hardcore performance testing to channels with big budgets. However, I've always felt like the i30N was underserved in terms of genuine 'owner perspective' content in the sense of what is the car like to live with as a daily driver, is it a purchase you'll regret or be happy with, and so on. So that's where I've focused. I actually have a video in the works about fuel economy, as well as on topics like missing features Hyundai should have included, "real world" performance, fun factor and all sorts of other things. As long as people are interested I'll keep making them!

It's important to have a decent vehicle in my line of work but appearing boy racer-ish is not a good look. The Fastback is a very mature shape I think. Everybody I've shown it to loves the looks.
