RTHB Day 17 | New Latte Mug & Manual Tamper Practice (POV)
Welcome back to EduArt Coffee, and thanks for joining me on Day 17 of my Road to Home Barista journey! ☕
Today, I’m testing out my new double-walled latte mug, switching back to my manual tamper, and continuing with the Costa Rican beans. Here’s how it went:
What’s in this video?
- Brewing 16g in, ~45g out (1:2.5 ratio).
- Using a manual tamper again and working on puck prep consistency.
- Milk steaming progress: a little foamy, but still managed a solid heart for latte art.
- A cappuccino-like result with a fun, “cloudy” vibe to the art.

      Thanks so much for the comment ! Yeah, espresso is better with great coffee beans. I used to not drink espresso at all, cuz i was used with bitter and overall not good espresso. I even said it in a few videos i i am not a big fan of it. BUT, since i strated this adventure of discovering all things coffee, i am starting to enjoy the taste of a straight espresso, when the beans are good quality, espresso is the way you can get all the notes and flavours in the coffee

    My favourite drink and like only almost is espresso. I love milk, however, when I get a coffee with milk it feels funny in the stomach, so I just have them separately. I am all manual, car, grinder, also tamping. A tip to get it even is to set your thumb and pointing finger around the edge of the tamper, this would allow you to see if it’s even easier, and to ensure the sides are that way too at the end twist it and see if there is still an unevenness.

      Thanks for the comment ! Sometimes being simple is the right way, more so if your stomach tells you so ! Appreciate the advice, i want to master the manual tamping cuz there is a bigger satisfaction when i tamp with it, it feels like i worked harder for my coffee :). Again thanks for the comment and the advice :)

    Nice job on the new coffee. Currently I own a timemore c3 esp and if I were to upgrade it, i’d get a Eureka Baby. I prefer manual grinders. Easier to carry, to clean, less likely to break, puts more personality in my coffees and most of all, cheaper. Can’t see myself spending hundreds of dollars for a grinder.

    • @eduartCoffee
      @eduartCoffee День тому

      Thanks ! Those are nice griders. But, isn't it complicated with consistency? I heard that manual grinders do not help with having the same exact coffee every single time, and sometimes you could get a bad one because of that. Just asking :)

    • @makerl1fe388
      @makerl1fe388 12 годин тому

      I know what you mean. The one I have and the more high quality ones should have this issue if you keep it straight while grinding. If you’d incline it, then there will be more fines, which have that inconsistency issue. Right now it’s great and just can’t see myself giving up on manual grinding. An electric one would take away from the joy.

    I am a newbie and my no means can give anyone advice. But i do find that getting a rounded, wider cup helps a lot with the pour. And maybe don't let that milk sit for too long. I find that the window of opportunity is really short.

      Hello there ! Thanks for your feedback. I have leart that it does help to use a rounded wide cup, i've got some, but when i am moving around in the house, a more narrow and "tall" cup is more comfy. But i do use a different cup each time, to get the latte art on all of them :) It is indeed a problem for me, i take too long to pour the milk into the espresso, i am trying to be faster there. Thank again ! <3

    Last thing, I’m stuck with a “14-18g” IMS basket at present, but with a puck screen, 15g is pretty much the most I can use. I’m still waiting on my Bookoo scale to arrive, so I’m eyeballing my shots. They’re coming out well at present, but it’s probably luck! I do see quite a bit of channeling on this shot. I would suggest at the end of your WDT process, to lightly swirl around the whole surface of the portafilter (at surface to about 1/2 depth), to end up with the surface as smooth and even as possible.

    Glad I found your videos! I’m pretty much in exactly your position. I very recently bought my first espresso machine, a Lelit Anna 2. I bought all the little things (WDT, spring tamper, tiny spray bottle/bean weighing container, etc), and have gotten my espresso decently repeatable. I’m likewise learning/struggling with milk steaming and latte art! I prefer straight espresso, but I’m learning for my wife’s sake. It seems the Gaggia might have a little more steam power. Anyway, I don’t have any advice for you, since steaming is difficult and I think you’re probably a little farther along. I wish I drank lattes, because I have no idea when I’m done whether it’s good or not! The ratio of milk to coffee seems pretty important. I would suggest getting a cooking thermometer to help you tell when your milk is hot enough. Anyway, I appreciate your struggles. Keep it up! It encourages me to do the same.

    Hold your milk spout closer to the surface, your milk texture looks decent. You could also try to submerge the steam wand head more at the start and then pull up to the surface of the milk to aerate.

Though I feel it’s a bit much and would like a 15 grams basket but not in the mood to order one as I’d just waste the one I have. I see the after market tray and pipe. But have you modded the springs? I would def recommend it. Also after heating the machine, purge some water first to release harsh steam that may have built up, then add the group head. turn on steam for 10s, turn off steam, then pull the shot. Much more consistent this way.

    Hi, fun to watch as you improve as i'm doing the same at home but not filming it as you do! 🙈😁 I have a couple of suggestions to your workflow.... When you tamp and get coffee stuck on the edges, just knock the tamper lighty on the outside of the portafilter and the coffee will fall in towards the middle of the puck, then just do a light tamp again and your set! 👍 Next thing, about getting out the puckfilter. What works for me is that i lay the portafilter on its side and with a small towel in my left hand i tap the porta in the knockbox catching the filterscreen with the towel as it kinda just falls out and then just turn the porta and knock out the puck..! 👍 Hope that made sense...!? 😂🙏👍 About the milksteaming... I'm like 50/50 successful with the texture, often dont have a clue what i did different... 🤷 But i hope it gets better with more practise... 🙏 Keep it up fellow Gaggia user! 👊 Greetings from Sweden! 🇸🇪👋👍 /Henke

    Welcome back. The fun part about new coffee is the dial in process, hard not to waste. The way i do it is just be coarser and this way i can at least drink it and not waste much. Plus i get to taste different notes. I don’t like blends either, i just feel it’s an easy way for the roaster to pop in some worse beans and they’ll be drinkable, for that i’d just rather have the beans go in supermarket for people that don’t care as much and I stick to single origins from south america, my favourite being Peru, also liked Guatemala.

Don't get me wrong, they are drinkable, and better than the coffee i drank before having the setup. But there are some wat better coffees out there. So far i have not tried that many origins of coffee, so far my favourites have been Columbia and Costa Rica. But still got a lot of origins to discover :)

    Hi i have pretty much the same issue with grounds sticking on the wall of the basket walls. I ended up by considering that my tamp doesn't perfectly fit with my basket, maybe that's something that is solved with better quality tamp and basket ? As I don't have money to improve and test, I accepted it: I thing I have other things to improve before that. And for exemple, I have questions about your Gaggia : 1/ It looks like that you have a PID kit installed. I was considering buying one, but I had a question: Can you tell me how long it takes for the gagia to harm and be ready to produce approximately 94°C ? Without a PID, I use to wait 15 min before it gets warm enough (and before I play with button to try to have consitency right before extraction). Is it the same with a PID, do you need to wait 15 min ? 2/ As your are using a Puck screen with 15g in, does that mean that your actual basket is a 15g basket, a 16g basket, a 17g basket ? Thanks for your video, it' a pleasure to follow your progress

    • @Volgin.
      @Volgin. 3 дні тому

      The issue with grounds in the walls of the basket is exactly what you said: the tamper not being very accurate to the basket's size. I believe the basket is 58.35mm and the tamper is probably 58mm, that .35 difference causes the grounds to raise and stick to the wall of the basket

    • @eduartCoffee
      @eduartCoffee 3 дні тому

      Hello ! Thanks for the comment :) Yeah i figured size was the problem, i wandered if there was a way to clean the walls of the basket before the extraction. About your questions: 1/ It usually takes 10 minutes to warm up, (my PID is set to 101 C because there is an offset between the temperature in the boiler and the actual temperature water comes out the group head, usually 6-7 C. So in reality i am aiming for 94-95 C). I tend to let it warm for a longer period of time (15 minutes) just to be sure everything is nice and warmed up. 2/ My basket is a 15g BEP basket from 3bomber, i learnt that the actual volume the grounded coffee takes in a basket depends on the roasting level, here with light / medium roasted coffee, 15gr + puck screen in a 15gr basket is ok, and i feel like there is even some space left Hope my answers help you in any way, shape or form :)

    Isn't a 17 sec shot very short? Idk if it works different in this machine or your particular recipe

      @eduartCoffee 6 днів тому

      Yes, it is kind of short! I am still learning so my shot's are not yet perfect 😊

    Start steaming your milk a bit before the actual indicator light of the steamwand turns red. This way you’re able to maintain steam pressure for longer. What also helps is to fill you pitcher with milk right when you start your workflow and let it sit in the fridge until you start steaming the milk. This to be able to aerate better and steam longer

      Thanks for the comment and the tips! About the steaming indicator. My gaggia classic pro has a pid installed. It get's rid of the steaming pressure problem. So i don't need to start the steaming before the light turns on because the pid controls the steaming temperature and it ensures it stays low enought to not lose pressure :)

    What is the purpose of wetting the coffee beans?

      Stops static and makes for a better grind.

      Hey, thanks for the comment ! It's a technique called RDT, i don't know all the science behind it, but it helps reducing static during the grind and decreases coffee retention inside the grinder

    • @sirdaevyl

      @@eduartCoffee nothing with the video, just personally the progress for making an espresso like this would be too long.

    • @eduartCoffee
      @eduartCoffee 9 днів тому

      Oh okay got it! It may be a little longer than pushing a button, but coffee tastes waaaay better, it doesn't even feel like the same drink, and the feeling of drinking the espresso you made with your own hands is amazing. Would recommend trying at least once !

    Since youre using a puck screen, theres absolutely no reason to rub the shower screen after you flush. Key thing to keep it clean is flushing for about 3-5s after each extraction. Also, avoid using the same cloth for everything... Have a separate towel for the steam wand/milk, as it tends to get dirty and smelly way sooner. Another thing is that your shower dispersion looks like a bit of clogging because of lime/calcification. I suggest getting an espresso detergent, doing some backflushes, and leaving the shower screen and group plate submerged in the solution for a couple of hours to see if it gets better. Maybe a full decalcification?

      Hi there! Thanks for your feedback really appreciate it! About the shower head, i noticed it, tried backflushing the machine, and tried cleaning it by submerging it in the solution. But i only left it in there for 10 minutes. I plan on doing a proper cleaning when i get back, i'll see if it helps. If not yeah i gotta do the decalcification, it needs it, last owner said last decalcification was a while ago

      @eduartCoffee specially in places with heavier water, it is important to keep track of your machine's flow rate. Not sure if it's gonna be helpful now, but once you do the decalcification, measure how long it takes to fill 50-100g of water. Then, you can repeat that and compare the durations. If it starts dropping, then it's time to do decalcification again!

      Okay i'll keep that in mind. Note that i don't use tap water. I use store bought water, to avoit all the minerals in tap water, specially here in Romania i don't really know what's in there
