John Smeaton - The Father of Civil Engineering
After cycling and filming my adventure along the Forth and Clyde Canal in Scotland, engineered by John Smeaton. I decided I wanted to find out more about who this man was. Ironically in the approach to the 300th anniversary of his birth.
So with help from the Smeatonian Society and the Institution of Civil Engineers, a plan was hatched to travel the length and Brett of the UK from Plymouth to Perth from Leeds to London to discover why John Smeaton is considered The Father of Civil Engineering...

Many thanks for such a fascinating insight into a fascinating person. May I, however, make a minor moan about something that is not uncommon in many videos. That is:missing basic information - in your case, dates. We get he was born 300 years ago, but we have to wait almost seven minutes before an inscription invokes us to praise God on August 24 in 1759, presumably the date the lighthouse was completed. Before posting online it is a good idea to review the material and ask: "What very few words of explanation would improve the experience for the casual viewer - from across the world - who may stumble across this, be fascinated and benefit from a tiny bit more context." Best wishes.
Beautiful place but i have to ff through the bs. To much talk. Cant you just keep the personal info to yourself and shut up? Stop talking and just enjoy the beauty of nature.

I live in Alston - not far from Hexham... Alston is known as "England's most remote market town", and is also its highest town in altitude above sea level. In 1765, John Smeaton designed and built the High Mill here in Alston, which still exists today. A year ago, the High Mill was purchased by Jonathan Muir and work is already underway in restoring and preserving this historically important Smetonian construction. As mentioned in your film, Smeaton's work in hydro-engineering led to his award of the Royal Society's Copley Medal. Alston is extremely proud of our tiny piece of Smeaton's repertoire, and we are thankful to Jonathan Muir for his commitment to preserving it.
Thank you so much for posting such an interesting comment - you may also enjoy the film I made on my channel about the Union and Forth and Clyde film. Of course the letter was another great legacy of John Smeaton.
Great work putting this together, he was a great engineer and his work is admired to this day.

After being in Nepal last month, I can only say that it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. Unfortunately, bad weather left us stranded in Ramechhap for 4 days, so we had to re-plan our entire tour. But it was still just fantastic, it was particularly beautiful to see Changtse, Everest and Nuptse lit up in red and gold at sunset from the summit of Kala Patthar, even if it was very physically challenging. Especially the "last" day, because we couldn't fly out of Lukla due to the weather and had to walk and return to Kathmandu by jeep. 23 hours of pure suffering. ;-) I can also agree with your list of 10 tips, it is absolutely accurate. I would be delighted to hear news of your current project soon. Best wishes.
@@olligle6866 thanks so much for taking time to comment coming soon on my channel is also an adventure to Kilamanjaro. Hope you can watch that one too. Sounds like you had a hell of an adventure!!
Always good to see an English tourist doing the walk... as long as they fk off home.
Thanks Man!
At 3:24 the wrist straps are wrapped wrong way. Hand should go down and up, stap over the back of the hand and between the palm and the grip.
@@karipintakivi9153 I’m sorry. Is that the only valuable comment you can make?
@@KevinAugelloNewEarthFilms Well, having the straps correctly actually adds 100% more efficiency, no need to squeeze the grip at all, better flexibility and movement, possibility to use the flat grip top when reaching down (crossing streams etc) and adds safety, as simply letting go of the pole drops it hanging by the strap. Also easier to eat snacks, use camera/binoculars or just pick your nose. Annoys me a lot that most (non-skiers) do this simple strap detail totally wrong. I also added a valuable comment about the Phortse High Scenic Route People should use if hiking to EBC and back only. No reason to hike the same Tengboche trail twice when there is a better alternative available. Guides are lazy and ignore these trails wanting the clients think it is the only possible route. Namche - Phortse - Pangpoche trail was there 200 years before Tengboche was even built!
I have been there 5 times between 1985 - 2018. So my comments are from actual experience. Here we go: - As you will sleep in lodges those mattresses are totally useless only taking up lots of space and adding weight. - Many trekkers to Gokyo and EBC manage totally without sleeping bags, because lodges provide duvets to their guests. Maybe just a liner or a light 1.5 lbs summer bag for hygiene. - Same for pillows, lodges have those. Use spare T-shirt as a pillow case. - No need for 2 down jackets, one midweight one suffices. On my latest EBC - Gokyo trek (late November into December) I actually used an old TNF Nuptse jacket which was the lightest THF model 25 years ago. - I have not carried GoreTex pants since eighties, modern trekking pants repel water to some extent and dry really fast. Light GTX jacket will be used most likely against the wind, not rain if hiking during the high season not monsoon (and you would then sweat too much in a jacket anyway). - Replace the windstopper fleece with light softshell or wind jacket. Days are warm but often somewhat windy. - Add light grid or Alpha 90 fleece, most of my hiking up there is done with light merino long sleeve/thin fleece/light softshell or windshirt/jacket. - If the trek extends to late November - December take light padded pants or fleece pants for the evenings. - Footwear: you are right about the light boots, I have been using either trail runners or mid high Salomon XA Forces Mid GTX shoes since 2017. Nothing more heavy is needed, full long AC I have hiked 4 times with joggers or trail runners. - no mosquitoes up there (DEET). - Tourniquet? Dangerous in wrong hands. If going with a guided group they have first aid kits. - Add Diamox to speed up acclimatisation (not everybody needs it) and Tiniba (Giardiasis medication).
Lincoln hall was an idiot
It's like in America when we talk about the '50s and how innocent and some of the things we would love to experience again. The Mount Everest experience has been overdone. Very sad. Too much tourism.
