    Spencer is woefully ignorant here. As a business owner, it's my right to refuse service for whatever reason I want, including not wanting to tattoo something made by a TERF. You're free to go somewhere else to get tattooed. If you don't understand how much a TERF like JK Rowling affects the trans community, you need to get your head out of your ass. Your privilege to pay for my services doesn't trump my right to refuse them to you.

    for me it totally depends on how much of the artist 's bullshit I pickup from their art, or how much I'm directly contributing money towards them, and a bunch of other contextual things. So like, nothing about Chili Peppers' goofy surreal lyrics remind me that Anthony Kleidis is a predator, but *everything* about R.Kelly's music does. Or like, I'm down to watch Harry Potter reruns because fantasy is cool, but I'm not about to watch any of Mel Gibson's like, religious or war-themed shit. I'll read HP Lovecraft all day but if he was around today I probably wouldn't like, go to his book signing for example. It really depends on a lot of context for me

    Was hoping to find a decent conversation about how hard it is to deal with the moral aspects of supporting bad people. Instead it was mostly whinning that other people have stronger convictions and greater clarity of the impacts of their actions. Wanting the tatoo is fine. Not understanding that other people are more impacted by this struggle and have stronger opinions than you is a disappointment. Edit: corrected typos. Also: not trying to accuse, I have things i like from problematic people too. It sucks when they tarnish their own creations.

    The golden snitch was an asinine element from the boy wizard books, nothing makes it as obviously as that thing that Rowling is just bad at worldbuilding. So, aside from her being a terrible human being, you still should not get that nonsense as tattoo.

    Why is rothfuss in your thumbnail between a disgusting individual and a horrible, no-good trash person? For not finishing fast enough? What is happening here.. Also, telling an artist to just do something that they have feelings about is ridiculously selfish take. If you know someone is horrible, like Gaiman, and your response is "I'll probably read his book at some point", that means you financially support Neil Gaimen. You get that, right? This comment was your free engagement, now I go *remove from watch history* so this punk doesn't fuck up my algorithm. GL to the other two, you should probably ditch this loser name spenser.

    Well, if you wanted to separate yourself from art done by people of let's say "questionable" (in some cases that would be understatement of the year) reputation, you would probably need to throw away half of the music, movies, literature, games etc you own. That having said boycotting some artists because of their crimes understandable, but it will always be selective, it is not possible to boycott all.

    • @FantasyFiles
      @FantasyFiles 6 днів тому

      Oh no way, I don't want to separate MYSELF from the art lol that's the exact opposite of what Separation of Art and Artist means. It means that even if the artist is a shitty person, you separate them from their art and just enjoy the art for what it is, rather than attaching all this baggage to it.

  • @kennethfeller3939

    Your story hit me differently. In New Zealand, tattoos (moko) have a cultural significance that's deeply tied to Māori identity, and the art of tattooing is a spiritual practise. It's common for tattoo artists to refuse customers if they believe the client wants a tattoo for the wrong reason, or the vibe isn't right. The artist might refer the customer to someone else if they believe they're a better match. Westerners tend to look at tattoos as a product. Sure, JKR wouldn't make money from your design, but as you said, you were looking for someone to put their personal flair into something you already had. You were after the tattooist's art. In my mind, creating art is a spiritual practise (like being queer is part of someone's spirit) and if you're asking the tattooist to create something they don't vibe with, they have every right to decline.

Like I choose not to support up and comer authors who are using AI to write/narrate/cover art because my money actually goes straight to them and allows them to keep doing that. But I would be extremely surprised if even $20 of my money has ever made it to someone like Rowling, let alone the fact that I could spend thousands and thousands of dollars on HP stuff and it would literally just be going to her great grandkids at this point cause she could never spend her entire wealth in her lifetime.

    Thank you for reading out my comments from your last video 🙂 Here's some thoughts I had after watching this video: I think Dumbledore rescued Umbridge because if the centaurs had killed her there may have been massive ramifications for the centaurs, especially as she was an employee of Fudge's. I really enjoy this book and I think Harry's angry outbursts are completely understandable. There's something cathartic about him shouting at the people who deserve it 😂 I'm glad when Hermione calls him out on his attitude towards her and Ron though. Harry is not only sharing emotions with Voldemort, he's also suffering from PTSD from Cedric dying in front of him and Voldemort trying to kill him. On top of that, he had to go back to the Dursley's for weeks with hardly any communication and then Dumbledore ignores him all year and people tell him he's a liar. So yeah, if he didn't act the way he does it wouldn't be very realistic. I can understand people having a hard time with this book though. It's definitely the most divisive in the series. I think JKR was brave to write the main character as unlikable but I think it works and I can't imagine this book without his attitude haha! When Harry receives Sirius's gift he tells himself he will never open it because he thinks it will get Sirius into trouble and he doesn't want to jeopardise Sirius's safety. He then puts it in his trunk and forgets about it because he was never going to use it. It is a shame Sirius never explains exactly what it is to Harry but I do like how the mirror comes back into play in book 7. There's also a moment to look out for in book 6 which explains how Aberforth ends up with Sirius's mirror. JKR writes the Cormoran Strike series under a pseudonym (Robert Galbraith). She wanted to write a new series without having the pressure or hype that came with Harry Potter and to be judged on the merit of her writing, not her identity. When the first book was published no one knew she wrote it and it received positive reviews and won a prize. Then three months later The Sunday Times received an anonymous tip that JKR had written the book so they hired someone to confirm this who figured it out in half an hour by using computer software. The paper then confronted her and she confessed. She was understandably upset about this but I think she now takes as long as she needs with writing the books although she is churning them out pretty quickly even without outside pressure. The first book came out in 2013 and she's now writing book 9, with book 8 being released later this year. Looking forward to future videos. Books 6 and 7 are my favourites in the series.

    I'm not sure Sam has really read what JKR has said regarding the trans community. She's actually very sympathetic towards them in general. Unfortunately a lot of people only read what social media/bad journalism is saying about her instead of actually reading her own words. The issue is very complicated and JKR is very practical and realistic in what she's saying. More and more people are realising now that she was right all along about gender ideology. It impacts women's rights and safety, LGB rights and child safeguarding. The funny thing is she is doing exactly what Harry does in this book. He speaks the truth and does the right thing no matter how many people tell him he's wrong. She's doing exactly that. Sorry to get so real when you made a fun Harry Potter video, but when JKR gets compared to Umbridge I feel I have to defend her. It's the Umbridge's of this world that she is fighting against.

    • @FantasyFiles
      @FantasyFiles 10 днів тому

      @katie870 22 години тому

      @@thekpopaddict6522 That's the problem with the JKR controversy, people hear things somewhere and take it as fact (not saying you do as you're asking a genuine question but so many people don't do their research). I did a quick Google search of charities she has supported and these were listed: Book Aid International Catie Hoch Foundation Children with AIDS Dyslexia Action Gingerbread Haven Foundation Heifer International Lumos Make A Child Smile Appeal Multiple Sclerosis Society PEN Raisa Gorbachev Foundation Women's Fund for Scotland XP Support Group It also depends on what you mean by anti LGBT because people might consider me anti LGBT because I don't agree with allowing violence sexual predators into women's prisons just because they suddenly decide they're women when they find themselves in a mens prison. @@FantasyFiles It seems that Kade enjoys putting small details in the books to set up for larger payoffs in the next book. There was a lot introduced about how human/elven magic works that seemed to be new info. Combined w/ the linking/control stuff, it might be setting up the mechanics for either Caydean's "true plan" or how to counter it. Kade did such a great job foreshadowing Rezkin's magic/purpose in book one even though we had to wait until book 5 to get a full reveal, that now I'm suspicious that any seemingly innocuous details/isolated plot might pop up as important later, but obviously you can only tell for sure that something is foreshadowing after the fact so it's only curious speculation on my part.

    I love your work, please start promoting yourself on the reddit sub, I've seen other people do so as well but I believe your work to be of much greater quality. So far I've only seen you promoting your channel there with your newest post but I think a concentrated effort in doing that should net you more views and subs from people who would find this channel as interesting as I do. (I do think that the debut of that interview with kel kade is a great opportunity to get more eyes on your content) About the review: I, too would love the book to be longer but feel like the author purposefully cut it there as those seemed like perfect ends to those little arcs. Any more chapters and she would have opened up a whole new can of worms that would have made the book even bigger than it is already... Finally, as fellow hopeless romantics, would you please bless me with some reccomendations of other fantasy books that have that wholesome romance element to them as I'm in the same camp as you where other romance novels are really hit or miss so I would love to binge through whatever you recommend.

      Oh thank you so much!! I try to post on the KDT reddit whenever we have a KDT video posted, unfortunately most of Reddit does not take kindly to self promotion but the KDT Subreddit has been great about allowing me to do so when it relates to KDT :) I definitely liked where the book ended, I think it was a perfect ending point, I just wish we had gotten more with Tam, Tyron and Frischa, and maybe Wesson, honestly. And I've been dying for more Raelin. There definitely could've been more to fill it out a bit. Oooooh great question! Well, one of my favorite romances of all time is in the book We Break Immortals by Thomas Howard Riley, it doesn't have an audiobook but if you don't mind physically reading something I legitimately think it's one of the best books I've ever read. He also has a novella called The Monsters We Feed set in the same world and it's amazing too. The Dresden Files has some amazing romances that span throughout the series that are very very good. Night Angel Trilogy has a great romance that pulls at my heart strings but idk if I'd call it wholesome haha (Great audiobooks, try to get the ones by Paul Boehmer if they're available, he's really similar to Nick Podehl). Also, Recursion by Blake Crouch, It's a sci-fi/thriller and not only is it one of the best stand alone books I've ever read but it has an INCREDIBLE romance, be prepared to cry... a lot. Stephen King's 11/22/63 has a really fantastic super wholesome romance. Time and Again by Jack Finney is also very similar to 11/22/63, and then Dragonseed by James Maxxey has a fantastic romance in it that tugs at my heart every time, but you'd have to read it physically cause the audiobook is terrible haha. If I can think of more I'll post them here but that should be a great start! Especially We Break Immortals, check that one out!

      @@selim6033 They're not. You're consuming the story either way. I'm getting just as much out of it by listening to it as you are from physically reading it. No one would know what you're talking about if you said "I listened to this" all the time, you'd have to explain at every turn. Not condusive long term for a UA-cam channel, it would get exhausting. Easiest to just say "I read this" because I did.

      @@FantasyFiles The issue is not the process of consuming a story. If u read you write better. If u read the book yourself you will process the dialog in a different way. Your experience is altered by the sound effects, the voice of the actor, the intonation of the actor will change your experience and so on. Stop having an emotional response to this matter. Im not putting one above the other, im just stating that they are different experience all together. This is a fact.

    @2:23:55 Agree on Alera. Book 2 it starts picking up and from book 3 and onwards it's just awesome and stays that way. From book 3 a clearly more mature Butcher as a writer is emerging. Likewise, with Cinderspires it's basically Skin Game / Peace Talks from the get go - highly recommended. Justin from Dresden Files Podcast said book 2, The Olympian affair was his current favourite book. He's not wrong.

    Liking the series is fair enough, but actually calling it good and putting it on par with greats like Tolkien or Lewis is blasphemy. The power fantasy that Rowling provides to feed our escapeism lets you easily overlook all the major issues. There is no moral depth to it, it lacks character development, the worldbuilding is outrageously lazy, almost everyone is a bully in their own way, and it‘s basically one giant „idiot plot“ where everyone is so stupid that it hurts.

    My personal ranking from the weakest to the best book with explanations: 7. Chamber of Secrets - in my opinion the weakest volume with a rather average plot - it didn't really draw me in. 6. Half-Blood Prince - too much naive love story in this book. I was already 18 then and all these teenage love stories irritated me. It has great storyline of memories about Voldemort and the brilliant ending - starting with the expedition to the cave it really becomes a masterpiece. However, neither the love story, nor the storyline of obtaining memories from Slughorn, nor the secret of the Prince's identity captivated me. The chapters in which Harry discovered Voldemort's past were wonderful, as were the beginning and end chapters, but the storylines from the middle part of the book, the ones which did not concern Voldemort, effectively spoiled the fun for me. In general, the world outside Hogwarts is falling apart, but I had the impression that there is a safe bubble in Hogwarts, inside which all the students suddenly went crazy with young love... 5. Philosopher's Stone - a book definitely for children, but it had the task of introducing the reader to the realities of the magical world - and it fulfilled this task brilliantly. It may not be as brilliant as the next parts of the series, but for the extremely difficult task of presenting so many magical things and threads that become important in the next volumes, I give Philosopher's Stone the 5th place. 4. Goblet of Fire - there is a lot of good in this book - the Quidditch World Cup, the Triwizard Tournament, the whole dark intrigue leading to Voldemort's return - all this elevates this book very high, but it did not draw me in as completely as the volumes I will discuss below. 3. Prisoner of Azkaban - I simply couldn't tear myself away from this book. Time travel, Lupin being the werewolf, the journey of the Knight Bus, blowing up Aunt Marge, the hippogriff, Sirius and the Marauders, Patronuses and Dementors - in this volume there are a lot of different threads that finally combine into one wonderful whole. After reading Prisoner of Azkaban for the first time, I felt that I absolutely had to reach for the sequel. 2. Deathly Hallows - the book is certainly not perfect, but it grabbed me from the beginning and didn't let go until the last page. While Half-Blood Prince was largely about young love, which didn't interest me much, Deathly Hallows is primarily about death - running away from it and finally accepting it. Half-Blood Prince seems to me to be one big prologue to The Deathly Hallows. The tale of the Three Brothers, I think, can be allegorically referred to the key characters of the saga - Dumbledore, Snape and Harry. In this volume, so many threads are skillfully intertwined and so many mysteries are explained that I am surprised that J.K. Rowling managed to do this. The volume is different from the others, because to a large extent it takes place outside Hogwarts - this is a big plus for me. The only thing that always bugs me a bit in The Deathly Hallows is that, several times, the Author pushes the plot forward using events and situations that could be described as Deus ex Machina. But generally, Deathly Hallows is a wonderful ending to the whole cycle. 1. The Order of the Phoenix - this is the first volume that I read in its entirety on my own in English. A wonderful, dark, magical and surprisingly mature story. I read non-stop, even neglecting to sleep at night - I couldn't tear myself away. Everything about this book enchanted me and took my breath away. For me - an absolute fantasy classic.

      Nice! Very different from my own ranking. I'm surprised to see Half Blood so low on the list. I felt like the romance part of it wasn't what I remember most from it, but also it's around that age where highschool kids start dating and stuff so it's to be expected. You must not like romance in Fantasy books haha

    • @Goury1
      @Goury1 Місяць тому

      @@FantasyFiles I do like romance in fantasy books. I just don't like the naive and angsty teenage drama version of it. I love romance when it's done gently and in a charming way, and that's not what I got in HBP..... it might be because of the fact that I had never fallen in love as a teenager - I sort of skipped the angsty, hormone-drive phase in my life... I read HBP only once, at the age of 18, so far. However, I've been recently experiencing the whole saga again - as audiobooks. I've never listened to Harry Potter audiobooks before - so it's a fresh new experience for me. I'm listening to Goblet of Fire right now and I think I like it more than the Prisoner of Azkaban... Once I listen to the HBP, it might swap places in my ranking too... We will see... What's your HP book ranking, I'm curious?

    Rothfuss does not get paid for the work that he has done. He gets paid in sales of books, which are commodities. If he does not want to ship another commodity that is ultimately up to him. It is not like he is on salary. The difference between you and him is that Rothfuss is incredibly, incredibly famous. No one cares about authors who are less successful, whether they will finish their works. Most writers never get as lucky as he is, and cannot make a living off their work. But it's not like he's sitting there getting paid by some third party, like people who have a normal job would imagine. He has no deadlines. He is a free agent.

    • @FantasyFiles
      @FantasyFiles Місяць тому

      Well, he's not exactly a free agent. He is beholden to the publishing house, he's surely gotten an advance many times over from them. Whether he's paid back that advance or not is up for debate. He is certainly on contract to release the third book through his publisher still, and owes them a completed work. He continues to resell "Special Editions" and repackaged short stories which I'm sure bring in revenue as well. I don't doubt at all he gets paid from his previous works that sell, but that fountain will dry up if it hasn't already. There's no way there is a constant flow of people buying his books any more, many many readers have decided not to buy his books until the third comes out. It's not to the levels that GoT is, where people will always buy those books since new people watch the show and start the series all the time. I'm not saying Rothfuss isn't wealthy, but at some point it will become a trickle of what it used to be.

    During the graveyard scene when those that Voldemort killed with his wand are coming out of it, we only see the most recent ones because Harry breaks the spell by running to the cup after his Dad comes out. If he'd waited longer then more people Voldemort had killed would have come out of the wand. Once Voldemort's body was destroyed and he became a spirit, he lost the ability to use his wand so he's only been killing again recently once Wormtail brought him back into a rudimentary body. Barty Crouch's wife died soon after they did the switch at Azkaban so she wouldn't have needed that much potion. Also, as Barty Crouch is so high up in the Ministry, it would have been easy to smuggle in polyjuice potion. As the dementors couldn't see, she wouldn't have needed to take the potion the whole time. She just needed it when she knew she was close to dying and then she was viewed by the prisoners when she was buried. Regarding how Voldemort went from spirit to having the body of a baby, JKR has said previously that when she explained to her editor how Wormtail brought Voldemort back into a rudimentary body, her editor looked like she was going to vomit. It's been theorised in the fandom that either Bertha was pregnant when they kidnapped her or Wormtail impregnated her and then Voldemort possessed the baby's body. Really dark stuff. Also, I think the fact that her name is Bertha (Birth) is significant. Myrtle is creepy but cause she's a ghost she is permanently a 15 year old girl so not a child predator in that sense. Ghosts don't grow up, they stay in the mental state they died in forever. Ghosts lead a sad existence in Harry Potter. I think the main part of the SPEW plot is to show how activism can be done wrong. Hermione doesn't ask the house elves what they want and assumes for them, putting a human perspective on their lives. Also, I think house elves are based on Brownies, which are household spirits or hobgoblins from Scottish folklore that are said to come out at night while the owner's of the house are asleep and perform various chores and farming tasks. The human owners of the house must leave a bowl of milk or cream or some other offering for the brownie, usually by the hearth. Brownies are described as easily offended, are always either naked or dressed in rags, and If a person attempts to present a brownie with clothing it will leave forever. So I think it's obvious JKR drew inspiration from Brownies when creating house elves. I think House elves have a symbiotic relationship with wizards and they enjoy cooking and cleaning. I think most are treated well, but we get bad examples from how the Malfoys and Barty Crouch treat them. I think Hermione is right that they need more protections from people like that but she doesn't understand that freeing them is actually cruel. As Sam mentioned she likes cults, she might enjoy JKR's latest book in her Cormoran Strike series. I would recommend reading the whole series cause they're amazing, but the latest one is about one of the main characters going undercover in a cult. Definitely the best one so far. It's incredible. Looking forward to your review of Order of the Phoenix. The books just get better and better from here.

    I think the 150 points the snitch is worth makes a lot more sense in professional Quidditch as is demonstrated at the Quidditch World Cup. But also, Harry is such an amazing seeker that the game can finish quickly with him playing and they're the games we always see. I think with an average seeker they would take longer to find the snitch and by that time the chasers may have already scored close to 150 points, which is only 15 goals when there are three hoops. It explains in the book that only the potential champions come to Hogwarts from the foreign schools, not the entire year because we see each of them enter their name's into the Goblet of Fire. We see them going back to their ship or carriage where it can be assumed they are getting their schooling because what else would they be doing all year. The reason blast ended screwts aren't in Hogwarts Legacy is because Hagrid illegally bred them in 1994 when this book is set so they didn't exist back then. People talk about the possibility that Neville could have been the chosen one, but he couldn't have been because his mother wouldn't have been given a choice to step aside. The only reason Harry was given protection from his mother's death is because Voldemort gave her the choice to save herself (due to Snape asking him), which she didn't. I have a lot more to say from your conversation so I'll write a separate comment so this isn't too long 🙂

      @ it’s a shame because they are beautiful books. My best guess to why they didn’t get their contract renewed is because of the new HP TV series. They created all the original graphic props (marauders map, howler, weasley wizard wheezes products just to name a few) for the movies and probably have been hired to do the same for the series. If they have been hired (again just a guess) that’s the next 10 years they would be tied up on a project and unable to do the illustrated books the justice they deserve.

    I just stumbled upon your video here.. Always great to see someone new join this AMAZING world! Dumbledore along with Harry of course were my fav characters as well! Amazing and complex character Dumbledore. And Harry the bravest man ever! I'm not sure if you're even gonna read this LOONG comment it's been a year LOL But I wanted to answer your questions! I'm not sure you got them answered or figured out or not but oh well here I am.. 19:40 Well Rowling already clarified all of that.. actually in my opinion after my LOOOONG years till now of obsession over this world I'm pretty sure I know my stuff PRETTY WELL LOL SO! About George.. I'm sure the only things she said was: Well how do you think a person lives without his other half? Fred was George's soulmate in the not romantic sense yk like his whole life so it was pretty awful he never fully recovers she literally said.. about his life; he supposedly married a fellow classmate don't know if you remember her; Angelina Johnson and had kids the eldest is "Fred" 😢 while continuing to run their joke shop with Ron joining later on! 19:45 Teddy Lupin had a wonderful upbringing -well as it could get as an orphan.. - living between first, his maternal grandparents Mr Tedd Tonks and his wife Andromeda the better sister of the 3 Black sisters "Andromeda, Narcissa and Bellatrix Black" And then later in his life as you read he visited then started to stay a lot with his godfather Harry and his family. AND MUCH later on in life supposedly got together with Bill Weasley and Fleur's eldest daughter Victoire! It was hinted in the 19 years later part that he was dating her. 20:00 Well the most important were: The Weasley family kept expanding on and on so what do you expect it was warmer than ever in the old couple's house with all the grandkids! only that was said. Harry and Ron never finished their last year they had still after the battle of Hogwarts and instantly became qualified Aurors for a while, then Ron shifted to run the joke shop with George and Harry then became head of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic. Hermione finished her last year! Typical Hermione! Then worked for the Ministry first in Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures department fighting still for creatures like house elves, then deputy head of the department of Magical Law Enforcement working directly with the Minister for Magic at the time, Kingsley Shacklebolt if you remember him "was in the order and was the black tall guy in the movies" to get rid of old laws that favored pure-blood wizards and witches. THEN she became Minister of Magic herself! Ginny went pro palying quidditch for the all-female Quidditch team Holyhead Harpies then she retired while celebrated and became senior Quidditch correspondent for the Daily Prophet. Neville became a herbology professor as you read in the epilogue and married fellow classmate the Hufflepuff Hannah Apott. Luna very much became just like Newt Scamander if you're familiar with fantastic beasts; just travelling about discovering creatures and adventures basically a naturalist and AS WELL married Newt's grandson Rolf Scamander. And I believe these were the important "new generation" of the order of the phoenix and the Dumbledore's army old members! Malfoy was discussed in the epilogue and there's no much interesting on him just keeping to himself just that his wife and only son's mother died very young. I also don't think that he has that potential to have the enemy to friend/hero ark he was just raised FAR away from ever finding that path truly but he just really did nothing bad after the battle of Hogwarts. I don't believe I forgot anyone important! Oh and 25:04 LOL Well DUH yeah! But it has a bit of a story.. See Arther was fascinated with muggles as yk so the car wasn't a first! He basically had A LOT of muggle normal stuff that he collects here and there from his job escapades and THEN he brings them home and starts experimenting with them using tricks and enchantments and the car was just an experimenting gone FAIRLY very right! that Molly didn't hate very much! She used to fight with him A LOT because of the random things he brings home and modify LOL.

I'm not sure if you've seen, but we have a "Podcast within a podcast" called Potter Watch (We have a playlist for it on our channel) where we're going book by book and movie by movie, and our co-host Sam is a first time reader! She's really enjoying it! When we get to the end of deathly hallows I'll read this whole comment on the show to tie a nice bow on things! I love all these little details. The one thing that hasn't quite sat well with me is Harry joining the ministry, even if it's changed. I think a much better career path for him would've been the DatDA teacher. And Malfoy... man I dunno I just wish he had gotten a true redemption arc, he could've been such a cool and complex character, and we need a good Slytherin! (I'm Slytherin haha). I haven't seen the Fantastic Beasts movies yet but I do know of Newt, that's so cool to hear that Luna and her husband took up his mantle!!! Also so great to hear about Ron joining the joke shop that warms my heart so much, I need a side story about it!!! She really needs to do sequel books (or prequels with the Marauders haha) But really, thank you so much for all these details, this is perfect. If you'd ever like to hop on the show and chat Harry Potter with us; reach out on Twitter or email! Fantasyfilespodcast@gmail.com, I'll pin this comment so I can find it later haha thanks!!
