Stories from the Street with Dr Julian Somers
I went to the streets of Victoria with some friends from the See Spring Mental Wellness Coalition who are on the front lines of our mental health and addiction crisis.
Here are some stories from the street, where our government policies, which lack community based and recovery-oriented supports, crash into the sobering everyday reality of what our most vulnerable citizens face as they seek to find some hope.

Was "Safe Supply" promoted by BC leaders who own pharmaceutical companies?

Was "Safe Supply" promoted by BC leaders who own pharmaceutical companies? What's referred to as "Safe Supply" has powerful roots in B.C. and in particular among a group of researchers and health leaders and other advocates who worked together very closely in the HIV AIDS crisis. Their work brought them into contact with drug users, and that really opened the door for some of them to turn atten...

What puts people at risk for severe addiction?
Переглядів 30 тис.2 місяці тому
What puts people at risk for severe addiction? We get some powerful clues about who is most at risk for addictions by looking at Canada's poisoning statistics. The vast majority of people who experience an "overdose" consumed multiple different types of drugs. They're also likely to be unemployed. In fact, over two-thirds were unemployed in the year of their passing, and many were unemployed in...

What does science say about introducing “safe supply” into a group of people using illicit drugs?
Переглядів 43 тис.3 місяці тому
What does science say about introducing “safe supply” into a group of people already using illicit drugs? Several authoritative sources, including the Stanford Lancet commission, specifically urged governments against introducing a pharmaceutical supply of drugs in the hopes of displacing illicit drugs. The main reason is it does not work. What tends to happen is people who receive those drugs ...
How do we immediately fix our mental health and addictions crisis?

Immediately addressing the crisis of street homelessness, crime, addiction and other forms of mental illness is doable and has been shown to be doable in B.C. and in other places. But unfortunately, the programs that successfully achieve those changes are starved for resources in favor of other things. The effective resources that we have include the drug treatment courts, community courts and ...

I found work a huge boost to my overall mental health by doing my best for my God and for my employer. Dedication to a specific goal or cause can be a key moral factor in being successful in overcoming addiction. Dr.Somers sounds like he has a great deal of experience and knowledge of how to best treat people who struggle with addictions and mental health.

Good luck finding anything in "life" that gives a comparable kick that's greater than the hit you get from a $3 pump on a pipe. Compound that with complex personal capacity issues like, being injured, having severe traumatic experiences, being of low IQ and EQ. There's no simple single solution. Perhaps we could spend more time and energy repairing, supporting, fostering stronger values and principles in our families, communities, and country that equip are children with better experience, confidence and tools to face the challenges with courage and grit. Safe supply was a great way to try, and we have learned, and now we can pivot and align with new attempts to try and learn again.

This is factually incorrect. Safe supply has been shown to reduce deaths from fentanyl spiking of drugs. The only thing he is saying that is right is that safe supply should be used in concert with other initiatives that remove the reasons for people to use drugs, but the tile is still misleading click-bait.

I feel you so much a Jimmy, I myself become so lost within a perplexing mix between the abuse that I've endured; stoking the addiction that I was burdened with. The struggle that I continue to preserve and fight against daily; through the begrudgingly optimistic lens of hope, challenged by my mental health, yet powered by my heart. Whether stigmatized by some, or helped by my peers, I do realize how broken the system is, but understand that there is another day to tomorrow. Here I'm wishing day after day that everyone can see that glimmer of light, because that glint of hope, holds me through. Love and hope from the Comox Valley.

Coming to just over 2 years sober now and I never would have thought that I would get sober again because I was so lost and tired of living with my life the ways it was like homelessness and jails institutions that I figured I was trapped in a cycle that I didn't know how to get out of much less deal with it emotionally mentally and yet here I sit and type this comment. Isn't it amazing how God can work in someone's life if we just come to him but for his saving grace abounds to everyone who is broken and wants to be healed by his love ❤️ ❤amen. Thanks for your compassion and truthfulness when looking at the topic of addiction and mental health

Oh you allowed comments I guess you aren’t lying on this one! I’m a psychologist & behaviour analyst with three advanced degrees (Psy.D) who spent a decade at a research firm studying human behaviour patterns to a granularity you can’t imagine- yes for CSEC. Then I spent 14 years as an outreach worker and still do and work in safe supply. ALLOW COMMENTS ON YOUR POLITICAL OPINIONS!!!!! This is not a soapbox for your emotionally stunted hatred for yourself your project on the vulnerable. I will protect these people viciously- permit comments or 1) that ADMITS YOU ARE LYING AND CANT STAND UP TO FACTUAL STATEMENTS (and I will spam EVERYONE on EVERY short, vid anything until you allow both sides. Your trumpian lies and also the factual evidence based truth backed up by but not BASED ON anecdotes. This is the only way to comment to you. Between a decade as a research analyst and another as an outreach worker specifically often in safe supply I know the truth. I KNOW it saves lives- I do the math instead of assuming. I KNOW it’s a hub for the vulnerable to access medical care, housing, detox, system navigation (counselling and system navigation are my titles at the safe supply I work at) I KNOW it changes lives and gives opportunities to 1) survive and 2) flourish and become a contributing member of society. Diversion? Assisting the vulnerable is bad? Whatever nonsense you spout I can disprove if you didn’t BLOCK ALL COMMENTS. START ALLOWING BOTH SIDES OR I WILL GET ALL MY FRIENDS TO CONVINCE YOU UNTIL YOU DO. These are people I love and care about and if you think I’m going to do nothing while you spread hate and lies you have no idea who you are dealing with. Safe supply saves lives. The sites allow for life saving wound care, system navigation to access housing, medical care, food, education and training, detox, counselling, helping them find their way back to a healthy life and a pro social lifestyle THATS what you are fighting. Sitting there reading articles on hate.com and alt right hate sites you have NO IDEA of the boots on the ground reality and shouldn’t be speaking on it. It is inappropriate and wouldn’t be permitted in academia. I work there every day and with my degrees in neuropsych, Psycholinguistics and D.Psy in behavioural psychology PLUS a decade of real life experiences. I’ve brought 1,000 or more people back to life how about you? I wash peoples stumps and treat them with moisturizer, I lance wounds but more often I do CPR and O2- ON THE STREET when doing outreach. Never one death or serious overdose in a safe supply clinic- NOT ONE. I also work at a safe consumption site where the overdoses are >1ce a day. And in the inner city where dead bodies of those WHO HID DUE EXACTLY TO THE SHAME PEOPLE LIKE YOU THOUGHTLESSLY CAST ON THEM are found daily. Get it yet? It’s YOUR OPINION THAT KILLS THE MOST PEOPLE. Delete this and I’ll just come at you harder. I won’t say I’m a hacker or part of a large group and would do anything to your systems (work and home and phone) since just because I program 9 languages fluently and worked for CSEC doesn’t mean I’d have that ability… (Of course I can. We are 8 generations past “finfisher” and I designed exploits ffs- please just allow comments) I don’t want any negativity but will protect the vulnerable like a wolverines protecting her cubs Anyways. All I ask is DO THE RIGHT THING AND ALWAYS ALLOW COMMENTS AKA THE FACTUAL TRUTH BE GIVEN ALONG WITH YOUR LIFE TRAUMA BASED HATE MONGERING. Sorry for whatever happened to you but other peoples parents, children best friends and beloved SHOULDNT die because you have issues Do the right thing -3302

Look I have been close to being on the streets, friends on the street, people I know claw back from there. Never has there been one that said “Give me a safe supply and I will crawl back”. Biggest false truth, lie, mystery, fake news, narrative twist, or fake news you ever did see. From dealers in detox to dealers looking out for your health. I MUST say the problem is not your health but the problem is who makes money off it. #FSafeSupply

Press Progress, Feb. 22, 2023: "According to a letter to SFU’s Faculty of Health Sciences signed by over a dozen PhD and MSc students newly obtained by PressProgress, grad students allege a class taught by professor Julian Somers got off to the wrong start last month when he brought up his National Post story during the first class and started arguing with students. The National Post story, which claimed Somers had been “silenced” by BC’s government for criticizing safe supply policies, was retweeted by right-wing figures, including Pierre Poilievre and Jordan Peterson. The letter alleges Somers, who is an outspoken critic of safe supply and has ties to the recovery industry, “neglected his responsibility to facilitate a free exchange of ideas” and even engaged in “bullying” by “targeting a single student.” “We write this non-exhaustive letter after five weeks of class and coursework, through which Dr. Somers has displayed a pattern of behaviours and conduct which have created a space in which we feel unwelcome, unsafe, anxious and unable to learn,” the letter states. “From our perspective, his pedagogical approach has been unprofessional, unprepared and disorganized.”"

We definitely need to do better. We judge to easily those who are homeless, have addictions to drugs and alcohol. Maybe if you could see the life they have lived We would be more willing to help them be the person they were meant to be. Just because YOU THINK YOU HAVE A GREAT LIFE don't forget it can change in a moment.

Buddy they are people too. Not all of them are full on idiots, they just don’t have another place to go. Remember, your government allows them to be down there with no solution at hand except keep them in one spot. There are a lot of people who want help but can’t get it like Jamaal. I used to hang out with him 17 years ago at the same strip when all this stuff that’s aloud now, wasn’t even close to aloud and it was better back then because it wasn’t so out in the open and we actually got arrested and saved sometimes from ourselves, and he and I were at our worst of the worst, but I got my act together and moved on with my life only because I went to jail and got help through there. It’s help on the streets where people don’t get it. So don’t judge by the idiots you know won’t ever be clean. Because they will always be there no matter what. There’s always 5-6 people down there trying to get out of the bullshit and some end up dying while they wait because of the fentanyl. Remember they are brothers and sisters of a family, mothers and fathers sons and daughters of someone. We need to do better as human beings and be a little more compassionate to some peoples situations and try to help them instead of throwing them away like what happens so often and not judge by what you see once or twice and condemn them downtown people. It helps no one or nothing. Just sayin.

I've been an addict my whole life. Ive tried and tried to rejoin the world. What you are saying is not true. I mean yeah in a perfect world. Unfortunately it's not and what you are saying is ridiculous. I've lost all my friends. All dead from drugs. The last friend they gave drugs to. I wished they did that a long time ago because that was the only time he was at all together. I'm white knuckling it but I'm just so tired. You may be an addictions doctor but what you are saying is going to kill a lot of people. I can honestly say I hate doctors like you.

the whole system in BC is flawed. if you work and are injured have health concerns that involve pain they put you on Codeine from that point on every Dr will treat you like a drug addict a interm Dr talk to you 2-3 minutes and start telling you they are changing it all. they make you feel like a criminal yet if your on the street doing it you are a victim what needs our support. how about supporting the people who are buggered up building a better canada for a change

I agree. During the crisis everyone in BC who was on any form of opioid had their medication cancelled, reduced, or changed. Unfortunately we were not the problem, but we took the hit, none the less... The government approach was to take away my meds and give them to a junkie...while I had a hard time getting prescribed anything stronger than aspirin the junkies were getting up to 1600 mg of morphine, four times a day... Taking away our meds because some people are addicts would be like canceling forks and spoons because some people are overweight... The conflict of interest between the law makers and the business owned or invested in by these same people, creates a HUGE conflict of interest, as they are acting in their own best interest and not that of the province...this should be a crime

So one group received proper Housing First (ie. consumer choice) and the other didn't (ie. assigned to a building) and they had differential outcomes. How is possible to then come to your conclusion if one had fidelity and one did not? Surely to make a proper assessment on scattered site versus congregate the residents would have to have chosen congregate or chosen scattered site?

independent subsidized market housing worked for me but im not addicted or mentally ill i worked with the at home/chez soi caseworkers to make things work what that program did was working for alot of people shame their funding ran out and the government did not use the research to properly triage people into tailored supports that would make a difference in peoples lives instead of warehousing them all in pooly run SRO housing that is resulting in making things worse as most homeless do not feel safe in SROs i really hope that this can be changed with the work you are doing Julian thank you for doing this important work ! 🙂
