I know this video is old but I may have to try that method my controller Port 1 works just fine its the controller Port 2 that's giving me problems u plug a controller in and it's shorts in and out. The analog button lights up then cuts right back off. I've opened it up cleaned both ports out and lightly cleaned the ribbon off. My game gave me the impression that it was working properly I tried it out before I screwed everything back in so I got very excited. Then once I screwed everything in and plugged it back up boom same problem again. So I don't know what else it can be. Maybe I will do it all over again and go to the motherboard like you guys did. Eh I might have to replace both ports and ribbon.
Thank you for saving this ps2. Who would have thought a 13 year old video would save a ps2 from the landfill? This has been one of the best tutorial videos I have ever seen. You even said how the first time it didn't work for you and so you used tape. It was like you were here with me telling me what to do. I so much appreciate it guys.
12 years later and I have a question, since my controller port 1 does not work however controller port 2 does, I wanted to check if it was the controllers and tried 3 new controllers but it wasn’t the case all of them were not working, however they would work for a certain amount of time (preferably 2 minutes) and then shut down but whilst the analog flashlight is on. It also says please insert controller into controller port 1 for all three controllers, to conclude if I get a new ribbon cable can this issue be removed??
Jan 2022…..Was playing on my ps2 and suddenly in game the X button and few other buttons started not inputting on screen, when reset I have nothing apart from up and down on the d pad and the analogue on and off works! this is on both ports with two controllers it’s doing it with what do you think it is the ribbon cable???
Ingenious well done 👍 that controller block has a horrible compression fitting that loves to break apart, you can insert thin plastic sheet .1 or .15mm to get the tight contact back
Is yours fixed? I’m about to try it on mine... hopefully it works.. I want to play games on my ps2. My port 1 doesn’t work but my Port 2 does and In order for me to play games the controller port 1 has to work smhhh
@@leviackermann9669 hya , i fixed it 100% ok using a thin sliver of plastic which I inserted into the top gap, this forced the ribbon down onto the contacts, rubbish connector (!) Best way is to leave this alone until u dissemble motherboard, then you can easily disconnect the mobo connector. Also the ODD best way is to dissemble this to laser deck, then easily connect bottom ribbon connector thru laser deck, way easier. Lovely system bar these 2 fiddly connectors 😜

May 2, 2020... bro this really help but I was trying to fix the game all day an my little bro came in start help am broke the nob that is suppose to click down on the ribbon, so i now have a bigger problem...
Thanks guys - nice vid. I looked at the flat controller lead in your vid & it had rust on it (someone spilt something!). Cleaned the contact points & it worked fine again. Thought it worth saying in case the actual strip is not broken, like yours was. Thanks for posting. :)
Please guys help me! All of my controllers suddenly stopped to work! Levers work but no touches (X or triangle or something). And sometimes I succeed if I push so strongly. Can u suggest me what could be the problem and how can I fix it? Both ports don’t work. Thanks a lor
November 2018 and this helped me! This is also how all tutorial videos should be! No 30-second intro, no annoying music to drown out the actual instructions...
@@treezy7567 Yup, the video explained the most important things: the problem (black flex cable loose) and the solution (disassembly and repair). So I popped open the PS2, found that cable, put it back in the connector, pushed down on the connector head clasp thing to lock (you will definitely feel it), reassembled, and I was good to go. I didn't need to tape the cable down or clean it or anything. How I originally broke mine was, I accidentally pulled the flex cable out trying to fit the PS2 in a Ikea Kallax shelf with a "Better Homes and Gardens Cube Storage Shelf, H" from Walmart. Turns out the PS2 is like 3 millimeters too wide for that, but I thought I could force it in anyway. Well, because I kept the PS2 unscrewed for easier maintenance, the bottom separated, and the top shell pushed the memory cards down, and _that_ pulled the flex cable out.
In no way, shape or form does the cover come off like this video describes. I have the exact same PS2... it requires 8 screws to be removed, not 6, and there is still something holding it on in the front. I still have yet to remove the cover.
OK, what these two meatheads don't tell you is that there are two screws on the underside (or top side really if the PS2 is in it's natural position) that need to come out too. You need to take the cover off the other side as well to get to these additional two screws. Once I removed them, the cover came right off.
Thanks guys this helped me avoid damaging the PS2 while i opened it. My problem was the same. One controller worked erratically. Bought new controller. The new one didn't work at all! At that point I knew it was the PS2. Popped it open, and simply detached the ribbon cable from the Port board (on both sides), blew on it a couple of times and then reseated it properly. THAT WORKED! Perhaps heat/cold over time slightly loosened it. So happy. Thanks!!!!!
i have strange issue, my dual shock dont vibre i heck it under pc and it is working no dameged cables, i thing ps2 slim do t give that much power to dual shock. Any advice?
my ps2 isn't really grabbing the controller tab. it slides in and out. the ports work, but it's only sliding in the controller 1 port. controller 2 port is grabbing and holding the controller tab. in other words, my ps2 female part is a little worn out and loose.
Please help me !!! I have very special problem. X button and CIRCLE button doesn't work in Browser or System Configuration, only in-game. When I unplug and plug back in Port 2 Controller, the PS2 reacts like I pressed CIRCLE button. Day before was working fine.
TABS BENT I just bought one, a minimally used console, looks almost new, nice and clean, controller is not working. I looked inside the slot of the port connector on the front of the console, the left side metal tabs on both 1 & 2 controller ports are bent in, you can see it without taking the console apart, shine a flashlight in there, there should be 4 tabs, one of the 4 is bent in, like the controller socket pushed one of the tabs in for some reason. Why the tab bent I am not sure, a bad factory bend angle? So I am going to try to figure out the best way to bend it back out to where it should be, a small pick, or something.
I am faced with very weird issues. My PS2 controller doesn't get recognized by all games. For example Kengo works fine, Ace Combat 4 and Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction don't recognize it. Has anyone ever faced such a problem? Also, the PS2 reads Kengo without problem, sometimes it cannot read Mercenaries, and it almost always fails to read Ace Combat 4 despite all CD's being in a similar good condition.
+nyarlatothep666 I have the same issue as you, the model I have is the slim one, the controller port 1 work only playing nes emulator on ulaunch elf and some games, it work perfect on system config menu. I opened up the console and cleaned the fuses on-board near the controllers port and the slot solder with rubbing alcohol, i used 100% isopropyl and now works perfectly, because the dust and oxidation can cause bad contact
I tried this on my ps2 and did exactly what they did on the video, but when I tested it neither controller ports were working and neither was the memory card slot ;-; Is there something I might have done wrong? And is there a way to fix it? :'(
Had the exact same issue , duck tape WON'T work cuz it must make constant pressurized contact with the motherboard port. I used the point of a very small flathead screwdriver. You MUST be very gentle when forcing the end of the cable DOWN in the port till it doesn't need to be clipped in, but clip it in anyway. Free mcboot psx-scene(dot com) is the way to go from here, but you might have a lil trouble getting it fully installed, but perseverence pays .
My controler port isn't sending the info of vibration to the controllers (only port 1), and I couldn't fix it 'cause mine is slim, and the port is attached to the mother board :(

Try and unplug and replug first so you don’t have to cut anything. I just did that and my player 1 port started working again
Hope that may be what I need to do, just got my PS2’s laser and AV out fixed, and hot a mod chip installed!
