Update on my pressurized cessna 337 skymaster and plans for the upcoming year. Spoiler: fly more, a few minor upgrades, and take more videos!
Smoooooth landing at Rocky Mountain House ... butter. The landing at Sprng Bank SaWeeeet as well. 👍🇨🇦👍
@@brianberezowski5352 haha yeah, I wish they were all like that but they’re definitely not
Great video, WOW she can really move. That will get you places in a hurry. 👍🇨🇦👍CYQT.
LOVING your Channel and love the plane. The C337 Sky Master is one of my dream planes. Will be finishing my PPL training this spring. Once PPL complete I will get transition training to fly my Avid Magnum. It is similar to a kitfox just a little bigger and heavier and in a tricycle configuration. : ) THANK YOU for sharing your passion for GA flying and all the adventures in the Sky Master. Keep the videos coming. Two thumbs up from CYQT. : )
That landing 😮💨
I wish I could do that more often
@ Man, that was beautiful
@@WhiskeyKiloKiloPLUS IN A SKYMASTER. That’s an awesome aircraft.
Love the videos. What kind of cruise performance do you find get with the airplane, and at what fuel burn?
I usually cruise around 205 mph true airspeed. On this flight it was 10,500', moderate cruise settings at 30" manifold and 2400 rpm. 27 GPH. The skymaster isn't the most efficient airplane but the pressurized cabin enables more efficient flight at the higher altitudes. For longer flights I would go up to higher teens elevation. As long as I don't calculate the fuel cost per trip I'm happy with it
@@WhiskeyKiloKilo If I don't know the cost it can't be that bad, eh!!
Nice vid. Are you happy with your GI275s? Curious about your decision to go with those versus G3X given the relatively modest price differences? Also did you consider G5s?
Yes I’m happy with the gi275’s. They have a nicer screen than the g5 and maybe a bit more functionality. If the garmin autopilot ever becomes available for the cessna 337 then the 275 will be beneficial I think. I don’t know if the g3x is available for skymaster. The g500 was a consideration but the current autopilot ifcs panel was kinda in the way. A large single panel would be nice.
@@WhiskeyKiloKilo I love your Skymaster videos. You've got a beautiful aircraft. I hope it stays flys for many years to come. I am sure it takes a lot of precious time to edit the vids but thank you! I am on the fence between installing (6) 275's on an old panel or just adding two more Aspens in a 77 P337G. Huge $$ difference but those 275's just really look crisp and easy to navigate. Can only wait and pray for a digital AP solution from Garmin or Genesys. Either will do.
very well done son, and thanks for leaving the 80"s cringe rock outta your vid...:-)
whats your cruise speed ?
If I’m up in the mid teens altitude I usually plan for 205 mph. If lower, a bit slower. Maybe 190-ish
No way there's a dedicated 337 channel! That's super cool. Safe flying and keep up the videos, cheers from a fellow pilot.
OK, so you say you are a novice pilot, then... How many hours do you have in total flying time and how many in the Skymaster??? I insist, you are a pretty good pilot.👍 Greetings from Abbotsford, BC. 🇨🇦
Thanks! I’m definitely novice though. I think I’m a bit over 200 hrs, most of it skymaster. I have fond memories of Abbotsford airshow through the late 80’s and 90’s. I hope to fly into there sometime
Thanks for sharing another flight. You're right, Castlegar is featured in the sim and it's one of the few places in the Canada update that was worth keeping installed. There's another POV landing video somewhere on UA-cam in a Dash 8, same runway, it's what got me interested in the airport.
Great cockpit audio
Saved the best approach over the lake for last!
Yeah that is a fun one
Thank you for writing the actual names of the airports and not just the ICAO codes like other aviation UA-camrs, so helpful for immediately understanding the context of where you are!
Subbed! Nice flight and thx for having ATC/radio audio. Dad flew Air Ambulance in Regina Saskatchewan and had close to 17000 hours. I have 1605 hours ................MSFS though. I can talk to controllers etc. via Vatsim and fly IFR with charts. I am going to recreate this flight. Thanks
Nice! I haven’t tried vatsim yet but I’d like to try someday
@WhiskeyKiloKilo It's a bit hit or miss, as controllers can sign out at anytime. Then it's VFR again. NOT Ideal, but fun when it works well. I just bought Beyondatc which is close to real controllers, because you talk to an AI bot. Voices are pretty good as well, but there are some glitches. Cheers
I like grass airports with the 337
I haven’t landed on grass yet but I hope to do so in the not to distant future
Enjoyed this! Thank you
This is so awesome!
Hey, thank you for the ride along..i watched take off, climb, some cruise and your decent.. tell me please , what are we in? Lol
@@ronniemackinnon3237 thanks, I guess I should’ve noted that! It’s a Cessna 337 Skymaster
Love it! MSFS/FSX junkie with over 2500hrs. That is my favourite area to fly! Watched a PWA737-200 come in expecting them to come in from the North… Nope… He came in flying IN the valley from the East/Nelson, hard bank to the left and landed right on the numbers at the SAME TIME he went wings level! AWESOME!
I just ticked over 660 hrs in MSFS. This stop is a regular for me as well. Great vid! Subscribed!
Thanks! Very nice ride and nice aircraft too, but I couldn't identify it. I am a flight simmer and recently landed at Grand Forks. I was doing a cross western Canada tour and Castlegar was close by but didn't stop in. Will have to do that soon. I was flying a caravan in the sim at the time.
Very nice, this view made me feel as if I were sitting in the co-pilot's seat.
A wind from the north east would really complicate that approach.
I like your layout of the GTN-750 further down on the radio stack. Lets you rest your arm on the prop controls in turbulence, My mistake was to put it higher up. What JPI unit is that on top, must not be primary since you still have your original engine instruments. P337H N4FZ. Thanks
@@md83driver5 thanks. It’s the JPI EDM 790. I like the panel but hope to add a modern autopilot one day
@@WhiskeyKiloKilo My plane has about 1400 TT with a 400A. I am very pleased with it. If I had my perfect autopilot it would be a 400B with the control head. My friend had a 400B in his 340 and removed it for a 55X. The 55X did not work as well as th 400b. He regretted making that change. Thanks for reply!
I just discovered your channel. Cool! The first thing I thought was, "Bird Dog" from Bat*21 (1988). 😀
@@incub8 yeah there’s some cool O2/skymaster scenes in that movie
What was the date of this flight? I was up in Kamloops in July and I seem to remember the fire near KROFT.
@@friendlyhonda3187 yeah, mid july 😎
Look at the chemtrails. Just as bad as here in White Rock
I had a mixmaster back in the 70's GWGK. Loved it
I didn't know what a skymaster was before watching this video. That's an awesome plane! I don't understand why they aren't more popular.
Just like all planes, there is good and bad with every design. It depends what the mission is. For me, it is a good plane. They are definitely capable and under-rated. Pressurization is great.
A box cabin and 1970s car windows that open in a pressurized design. Interesting relaxed approach to pressurization. If you ever get tired of the expensive annuals, try a speedy LSA with parachute. I would pit their safety over post WW2 twins any day. The running costs are a breeze by comparison. Can be 30$ an hour instead of 300. And some like Risen 915 can do 400km/h but they are sadly rare and overpriced. I was offered a brand new Vampire 600 for 83k$, minimal analog gauges though but otherwise a sleek good looking bird.
Yes you can make a solid argument for a modern plane with BRS. Especially over flat land. However, over steep cold mountains or open water, I like the idea of two engines. Annuals are painful, no doubt.
thank you so much, i worked on skymasters for many years , and 210s , brings back many fond memories
Many thanks for posting this. I learned to fly in Grand Forks in the 70’s and seeing the area again set my heart soaring.
@@peterritchie2990 That would be an interesting place to learn to fly! Coming from Alberta, mountains all around the airport is something I’m not used to.
@@WhiskeyKiloKilo When student pilots have learned to land by repeated landings at the tricky strip in Castlegar I daresay they could land at most places in Alberta without their eyes bugging out.
@@peterritchie2990 yeah that makes sense. I’ve been to Castlegar once. Such an interesting approach. I’m looking forward to going back.
Great video!!
How long is the flight and what's you cruise speed?
It’s about 1 hr 15-20 min depending on the wind. Cruise is usually 200-205 mph tas
I looked at this one when it was in Nelson. Good to see it in loving hands getting taken care of. I own a 337G (non pressurized) based out of Castlegar. Agree with the comments about the 337 being the most under rated GA twin out there!
Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it very much. I grew up in the area but don’t live there now. I have had my PPL and flew over the area many years ago. Lots of great memories.
Serious question as a newly licensed PPL: You fly a straight-in for runway 25, but per the CFS, CZGF isn't a MF airport? It's only an ATF airport. Transport Canada TP 11541 says there are only 2 ways you're allowed to join the pattern at an airport like CZGF, and straight in isn't one of them. Do pilots just do whatever "in the real world", or is there a subtlety to the rules that I missed? I know it's a bit pedantic to ask, but I watched your video in part to observe how you did it.
I don’t think tp 11541 specifies straight in approaches are not permitted at atf airports. In fact it states that ifr traffic may be coming in straight. Obviously, it is essential to be listening and looking for traffic. Joining the circuit at midfield is often the best way, but other options can be safe in certain circumstances. I’m not a cfi and I have plenty to learn. Just my humble opinion.
Thanks. Yeah. Most of the airports we used during my training were Class C airspace. I can count on one hand the number of times I have landed at an ATF airport. We were taught to cross midfield 500 feet above pattern altitude to examine the runway and wind sock from there, and then descend to pattern altitude on the upwind side the way it says in the TP. But how do you know which side is the upwind side before you get there? What if you arrived over midfield from what turns out to be the upwind side? Nobody ever gave me a good answer for that. The answer I got was "you may need to overfly midfield as many as 3 times" (i.e. twice at 500' above and one final time at pattern altitude to join downwind). Does anyone ever do that? I guess in your case at CZGF there's an AUTO on 122.55. Maybe that's the important subtlety?
@@PakledHostage yeah there’s been times where I’ve flown over airports multiple times before descending for the circuit. I think that can be a reasonable practice at some times/airports. In alberta there’s often plenty of space to do that. My limited experience in BC is a bit different with some airports with big mountains nearby. In my opinion, the bottom line is you need to maintain situational awareness of traffic and terrain. Again, I’m not an expert or cfi.
It is a lot more straightforward when one runway is left-hand pattern and the other is right-hand. Then, the upwind side is on the one side and both downwinds are on the other. One of the ATF airports that I have flown into is like that... but this is clearly an area that seems to have a lot of grey. Jason Miller did two videos about pattern entries on his "The Finer Points" UA-cam channel (albeit for the FAA rules), and even those seem to have led to plenty of questions from his viewers. I have yet to see a good video about pattern entries in Canada , but this discussion has been helpful. Thank you.
You can do a straight in whenever you want although it's not recommended at uncontrolled airports.
Sick!
You had to slow down for the Cirrus. Too funny.
Haha yep
Those are some amazing graphics, smooth frame rates, and awesome third-party add-ons, what sim are you flying in? LOL, just kidding, I was watching flight sim videos and this came up. Thanks for the great video, it was very nice.
Nice flight into CZGF. I remember seeing the plane. Do come back and I hope you had a chance to use the courtesy car we provide. PA 28 140 C-GDGS
It’s a great airport and reasonably priced fuel too. I look forward to coming back!
This is cool. Been toying with the idea of getting PPL as of late. Question because i know nothing, there was no acknowledgement or landing clearance from grand forks, is it unmanned, or how does that work?
PPL is a great endeavor. Grand Forks BC is uncontrolled. No tower, nobody working there. Communication is with other traffic in the area and there was nobody else around at this particular time.
@WhiskeyKiloKilo thank you for responding. How long was the total trip? I live near YQF and have day dreams of flying from Red Deer to say kamloops, kelowna or even abbotsford in something like a pressurized piston twin.
@@ckxtreme4338 it’s about 1 hr 15 minutes to czgf from calgary. Kelowna would be similar I think. I’d love to fly into abbotsford for the airshow at some point. Out to the coast and islands would be cool too.
Incredible!
I've watch the other videos and you seem to be a pretty cool pilot. What is your training background... Military???👈🤔
Thanks. No, I’m just a novice pilot. Very far from a professional but trying to get better.
@@WhiskeyKiloKilo - It caught my eye to see how relaxed you are flying the bird, you don't look novice at all. In that case... Congrats, that means that you are a "natural" aviator. I just subscribed to your channel, looking forward to see more of your videos.😉👍
If you can afford it, a full "glass panel" is a must for such a nice aircraft.😎👍 🇨🇦
Incredible how different the terrain looks from the air, v/s from the ground. Nice video. If you keep it simple, is usually better.😎👍 🇨🇦
Great video, the Rockies never disappoint. Your camera is spot-on for a good POV experience. And thanks for making the flight - not the music - the star of the show. Nice avionics set-up by the way.
A Skymaster over the Rockies. Beautiful. :)
bes tdamn airplane i have ever owned. i have also owned duke(piece of crap) a 340 and a 421 both are way more expensive to operate than the 337p and i lost a engine in the 421 scared the crap out of me and it was on take off. glad i had the pope on my shoulder lol i have also owned a 310 nice plane but also junk when a engine goes out the problems i have with other twins are yaw. ther eis no yaw with this plane. engine goes out like a 210. im getting ready to take the 337p to maint again then to a friend ranch o wyoming. i trust it with my life and my dogs life. i will tell you any single engine or light or heavy twin with out a/c is no fun,
well hell i just had a new a/c installed by kelly aerospace in mine and installed cameras so i can see the rear engine. i also installed the new reversable rear prop. also had my radar updated. but i have owned my 73 for 30 years. new paint 2 years ago, new leather interior 4 years ago. last year i also had a new glass panel.well garmin installed a new autopilot for me. maybe since i had this done last year is why you probably never heard from them. but mine is also known ice equipted/ also had the rear gear doors removed 6 years ago and as far as waxing it? well takes a long time.takes me 2-3 days to buff it out. big airplane lol i love mine but i fly it all the time. 5 years ago i had the 300hp engine installed. cruises at 250 mph all takes time and lots of money to update it. but you will never get your money out of it trust me. my panel cost almost as much as the plane is worth, i do not even want to know how much i have invested in it vgs etc etc. but it is the safest airplane for a twin out there. no yaw.if you lose a engine. also i had the bigger rear scoop installed for better cooling on the rear engine made a big difference,, i had flown my plane a bunch of times cross country this week i am having it ceramic coated. i also am a conserative weather pilot. i live in washington state new the canada border. so we get lots of snow and ice. i rarely fly it in the wintertime. heater is on all the time in the hanger.i love that plane i do not care what others think of it.and it is loud lol scares the deer on the runways..now i nave a major expense new tires and brakes this week, lol
