2012 Volvo XC60 D5 - An Old Fleet Member Returns!
Quick video from the day after collecting a former fleet member to return to the fleet. I owned this 2012 XC60 back in 2020, having quite a few headaches with it (including a defective torque converter at the point of purchase). With all the various projects flying around I decided I needed a reliable daily to add back to the fleet. Here it is before I started doing any of the improvements (note this is PRE HubNut's test drive).

In this video...I'm still burying my head in the sand ahead of the MOT and instead deciding to make the XC90 a little more shiny. Because obviously that will make the other problems go away...right?

In this video I continue to put my head in the sand about the XC90's pretty much inevitable upcoming MOT failure and instead go about significantly de-doggifying the interior. Suffice to say it was rather grim!

In this video, I'm cracking on with MOT prep for the XC90. The original plan was to jack everything up, pick out the bits that I think it needed for an MOT pass and order them. As things develop though it's obvious that through a lack of ordered thinking, and perhaps more than one part being worn I'm rapidly loosing the ability to make sensible conclusions as to exactly what might need to be ch...

It is great car. More content for this xc60
I miss mine got written off in march 😢😢
I'm sorry to hear that Craig 😢
@@craigpalmer347 My XC60 has been written off twice and still going strong. If it wasn't massively damaged yours might be back on the road.
Well I don't mind watching XC60 videos as I've bought, repaired and sold a fair few and there are 2 in our household but it's your channel! The only thing I hate about them is the fuel economy. I saw your aux belt short, I'm booking both in to get pulleys checked and belts replaced as a precaution. Shame you farmed out the rear brake job, it's surprisingly easy once you've put the calipers in service mode.
Thanks! I think once the XC90 project is rolling I'll be a little more willing to do extra bits to the XC60 myself. For now it's one 'one reliable daily' a bit like Matt Furious' Merc Estate or Sion's Kia. I have a very reasonable and friendly local mechanic who does the majority of the bits for me. Just as a measure of how much DIY people get ripped off btw - it was cheaper for him to supply and fit exactly the same rear brake parts as was fitted - than it was for me as DIYer just to buy the parts! 🤯
@@indecisiveauto Wow that's crazy, a couple of years ago I was buying XC60 discs & pads from eBay for about £55. Ours have been very reliable considering the abuse they get on the access road to my cottage, the only breakdown we've had was when one of the rear ABS sensors failed and locked one of the wheels on thinking it was spinning out of control. Same happened to my partner's car 6 weeks later (funnily enough her XC is 6 weeks newer than mine!) If it happens to you, go into MY CAR and turn off DSTC, the wheels won't lock up anymore and you can drive it to the garage in "Sport Mode". Don't believe the forums that you need bearings, axles, etc. I got ripped off with mine, I shoved a sensor in the other one and it's been perfect ever since.
Thanks I'll bare that in mind if I come across that sort of issue. Yeah the discs and pads from ECP came to £250 if I bought them myself (even with the usual discount code nonsense), I could of gotten them cheaper off Autodoc for something of similar or better quality but not in the timescale I wanted - my local guy fitted exactly the same discs and pads for £200 all in, so I'd of been daft not to really. They were pagid ones which I've read mixed experiences not had any problems with when I've fitted them before.
Dear Reader, This car gives me, as a viewer, the impression it also has darker rear windows. If this is also done with plastic, it would be interesting to see if Mr. Indecisive auto can get rid of it. Not intended to stare at someone's hard labour, but still interesting to watch. With Kind Regards, Michèl F. van den Brun Still not an owner of a Citroen BX or CX
Sadly they are factory rear-tints - I'd love to remove them as it does make it unbelievably dark back there but I'm stuck with them unfortunately. Jim off AlsoDriven hates being in the back 🤣🙈
Looks 100% better. Lovely stuff. More value has been cleaned into it over the last couple of videos 👍 Top work Dave 😊
I've already said this before, but the TNG lettering is magnificent. One day you'll get the budget to beam into a video... 😅
The lights are led on XC90 instrument cluster? Not sure why they didn't stick with bulbs as in the rest of P2 line up? The clusters are plug and play units anyway, the peeps you bought it from might have had one with similar mileage on the shelf, just me being cynical? This might seem obvious but did you check the instrument dimer switch wasn't just low, it did look like it as the DIM was illuminated OK but not the speedo etc... which are controlled by dimer switch?
The dimmer switch is set to the max brightness position. I suspect it's too high resistance because it's intended for normal bulbs - plan to swap it for a dimmer switch from a later model to match the updated panel.
@@indecisiveauto Did the replacement binnacle come from a P2 car, V70 etc., instead of an XC? Should be LEDs?
I bought a 54 xc90 couple of weeks a go for same money, I went for early XC90 because they don't have a dpf and swirl flaps. Biggest issues are undoing previous owners bodges! He allegedly used a local garage for all work, but after finding that the head light bulbs were in upside down and a few spanners left in the engine bay plus absolutely mullered lock nuts, either he should find another garage or leave the jobs to a garage? Currently rebuilding the parking brakes with 850 adjuster mod, new engine mounts, cambelt etc.. and a stage zero service, I have replaced all the discs and pads. Sold my V70 T5 to fundthe XC90 and give me some working capital, basically the same amount again. I did have some money left over to buy a 2010 Mondeo estate, transport whilst I sort the Volvo. Plan being the XC is sorted and good to go a few more years for under £1200. My reasoning is that for £1200 I could buy something newer with a longer MOT but still needing similar work at some point? I also get disabled tax relief which saves a few pennies. I was quite surprised how big the XC is when I parked it next to my L322 Range Rover, always thought of them as mid sized SUVs but it is on a par with LR though I don't think I would use the XC for serious off roading?
The diameter of the wheel magnifies any slight play in the bearing. Hence why the movement is apparently non existent when the wheel is removed.
Introduce us to other cars in your fleet....
Great video and work. I have found that if you are able to remove interior parts, then brush in carpet cleaner, then pressure wash to rinse, finally use the brissell to remove excess water. It has saved me doing multiple passes in the past
That looks wonderful 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Looking smart already god I miss mine 😔
When you interlope 😅😂😂😂 cracking vid bud.. 😊❤
I’ll be in my 854 T-5R next time promise.. 👌🏼
the two expolice cars (one being mine). the extra mirrors are not put back on, it's how they come or you have holes in the door
I see your xc60 has polestar mod, do you think it’s worth doing? Also are there any heritage events like this in the northwest?
I think the polestar mod is worthwhile, it's very responsive off the line and I believe the mapping on the gearbox is altered as well for better performance. I'm not aware of any other heritage events in the Northwest at present unfortunately.
I sold my V70 with both the 600 number boards...part of that cars history
Absolutely! ❤
That Rebel Blue v60 Polestar is a bit special isn't it! I'd be half tempted myself 😂
I have toyed with the idea more than once...I'm just not sure I could live with the ride! 🤣
Did you know the center consel can be removed? There is a leaver at the bottom rear.
@@markrichardson5966 yes I did, though I've not yet ventured to see what horrors lurk under there 🤣❤️
Great Video, fantastic job as always really enjoying the XC90 content.
Thanks, bit more to come and then there will be a little bit of a pause...for reasons that will soon become obvious 😅
Just so i could try it, I dry then wet cleaned what i thought were reasonably clean car carpets with my then new r2d2 Vax. The colour of the water shocked me, i can only barely just imagine what your XC90 will produce 😱🤢 . 🤞
My (as yet unboxed) Bissel truly has no idea of the horrors that await it! 🤣
My nose was itching and my eyes watering just looking at all those dog hairs🥴
I'm used to having everything I own covered in cat hairs but this was absolutely next level! 😬
Wow, mega job! I am curious how the Bissel will be doing 👍🏼😃
It's still blissfully sat in it's box unopened with no idea of the horrors awaiting it! 🤣
That bit plastic u put on for the obd port is up side down 😂
I did wonder after I fitted it 😂
I have cleaned some grotty cars but WOW!! never seen anything like that 😧 Watching now to see how it turns out..
Spoiler alert... things soon go a bit um... sideways 🤣
@indecisiveauto 🤣🤣
Soooooo much better 😊
Let there be light, vast improvement. That vid is bordering on AMSR so expect a few more hits from those who don't normally frequent these parts😁
I might of just strategically remixed a section into a short for that 😂
@@indecisiveauto With heavy breathing and lip smacking I hope😄
Great job
1:30 thats my Cavalier, you parked opposite me.. How was this over 3 years ago!!
That looks a whole lot better without that horrible tint.
Looking better David thanks 😊
That looks a lot better 💪🏼😀
Quite literally Night and Day difference.. You made short work of the glue, last one I did was a Freelander hardtop and I used what I had to hand, brake cleaner softened it but evaporated too quickly, Thinners did it in the end but slowly and I was high as a kite 🤣🤣
#notoncommission #washday 😂
Great job David 😎
I recently had a wheel bearing that was definitely past it's best when driving, but didn't show any play when static unless completely unloaded (inc. thrust load from the driveshaft). When fully unloaded, it was definitely totalled! Alternatively try your prybar on the disc, assuming it's shown up!
I had a Corsa C for 9 years, practically re-built the car! My solution to the oil change, was to purchase a pump powered off the battery - makes life much easier sucking out the oil and a lot less mess. I had it until around 120,000 miles on it, tried various solutions to try to fix the oil consumption (blocked breather hose another problem). I really don't think thicker oil works that well for reducing the noise or oil usage. I never replaced the chain (I have no idea if it was done before I got it maybe). Really think these engines like more frequent oil changes, I was surprised to see Haynes manual saying 6 months, but now I agree with that (regardless of miles done). BTW had some issues with Astra 1.4 too, oil usage and rocker cover leaks (new gasket doesn't seem to last long!) Despite the hassles I liked the car simple to drive and cheap enough parts. Multiple engine flushes seems to help with tappet noise, gunk seems to build up on these engines.
The track rod end did seem to be moving a bit. But in one of the shots so did the inner part of the trackrod where the gaiter is. That could be worn steering rack bushes, which would affect both sides, but I think the OS more in theory. And then it looks like the wheel bearing was wobbling a bit on the other side as you said. Probably it's all a bit worn :)
I use a wire brush 😊
Keep up your good work 😊
The 4 Tyres cost them more than they sold the car for!! Great save, got to love an old Volvo..
