Algernon Sidney: Martyr for Liberty
Algernon Sidney: the great hero and martyr for liberty in the seventeenth century. Sidney is little known today - with not even a fraction of the fame of his contemporary John Locke - but he was deeply admired and influential among English patriots and the Founding Fathers during the American Revolution for laying everything down for the cause of free government and the right of the people to resist tyranny.

You mentioned that Sidney held the French nobility in high esteem which surprised me as at the time a significant portion of nobility was the product of venality. In my opinion venality introduced a level of corruption that widened the gap between the governing and the governed and maybe the French would have agreed with me. Although I agree with much of Sidney’s views, that just stuck out to me as possibly inconsistent with his values of equality under god and meritocracy. Always great videos Professor Barth, I wouldn’t have heard of Sidney if it weren’t for videos like this so thank you and Merry Christmas!

Small nitpick. 7:50 The Habsburgs did not conquer the Netherlands. The Netherlands were the property of Mary of Burgundy, unique heir of Charles the Bold then wife of Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I of Austria. when she died in 1482, heir possessions fell into the Habsburg empire.

Another great talk! Interesting that Sidney didn’t exactly go out of his way to proclaim his innocence. Interesting that he regarded Charles II as a tyrant. So much for the Merry Monarch. Interesting that he was an aristocrat republican. You don’t normally associate aristocrats with radical ideas. But it would appear things were different in the 17th Century. Interesting what he had to say about weapons. British gun control is relatively recent only really getting going after the Second World War.

What a pleasure it was to listen to this highly engaging lecture - I was only peripherally aware of Algernon Sidney so I'm gratified to have learnt so much about this estimable figure; a true martyr for liberty indeed. Although unfamiliar with the details of his life, I encountered the details of his death when studying the Rye House Plot as part of Constitutional Law at university many years ago - I still remember my lecturer's disdain at an unpublished manuscript being used as a witness, and the baleful Justice Jeffreys's justification that "scribere agere est" (to write is to act). How gratifying, 30 years later, to learn about this hero's earlier life. Bravo, Prof. Barth, another fine video. Incidentally, forgive the pedantry but 'Leicester' is pronounced 'Lester' (another of these unpredictable English names like 'Worcester' (Wuss-ter) and 'Gloucester' (Gloster)) :)

Hello, glad you enjoyed the lecture. Thanks for sharing your prior knowledge of Sidney. Pretty neat that your constitutional law professor all those years ago mentioned the trial; it's unlikely that students today are learning this in constitutional law classrooms, but I could be wrong. Lol thanks for correcting me on the Leicester pronunciation 😂 I thought I might have gotten it wrong haha

I'm assuming this is a AI Channel and won't get any real response, but can't hurt to try....... Do you know anything about this manumission account? Here's the thing, since knowing God is very real and we live on a stationary flat non-rotating plain,my spirit will not let another man have ownership over me.the Hebrew meaning for Job is persecution and human in blacks law or balentines I forget, but definition for human means: monster one who cannot own land.and now we have 5 million different corp banking forms. I'm absolutely sick of the witchcraft in this commercial language we call english.this is nothing more than a corporation country owned by Britain.so much for the home of the free land of the brave, and their is more souls sitting in a concrete box than any other place on the most highs flat plain.and we have abyssal plains because I know something about crazy will come up,I stand on my truth and will own it.but we have paid liars that say they own you n I. Entomology is very important as well, and why have I heard nothing about the UCC 1 financing statement before like 5 years ago.bec you we never expected to be able to free yourself from legal tyranny.and let's not forget legalese is not law,it's commercial law not Gods law
