I am a railroad fan with a bent toward passenger trains and more specifically the California Zephyr which makes a scheduled stop in Fort Morgan, CO. I also have been known to chase Union Pacific steam locomotives here in northern Colorado.
Fort Morgan is on the Brush Sub. of the Powder River Division of the BNSF so many unit coal trains pass thru here as well.

A Calif. Zephyr in Ft. Morgan on 06JAN2025
This California Zephyr #5 arrived in Fort Morgan at 1123 MST (5 hrs.+ late due to late departure from Chicago, and broken rails in central Nebraska). A crew change also took place here. That held departure by 12 minutes or so as the PTC computer had to be reset for the relief crew. Meanwhile, there were 2 detraining passengers from car 7 and then 3 new fares boarded for a trip to the western slope of Colorado.
Once the reset for the relief crew was done, the high ball was given, and the Zephyr continued its delayed run with the next stop being Union Station in Denver.
My thanks to both crews for the chat this morning. And to the numerous passengers in the sightseer/lounge car for the waves.
Everyone please stay safe!
Temp: 26 F. Feels like 36 F.
Expected high: 30 F.

Hi Mike, hope all is well with you.Always seems like a let down after Christmas.Anyway I know it's none of my business but things have seemed somewhat off having not heard Ric, miss that voice. Was she late because of weather.Read where the SWCwas canceled. Have a blesses day.Hope you see this comment; if not, dont know what to do.This has become such a part of my life.Thank you Mike, you'e the best. 👍👋😉💥😎
Good Afternoon, Mike. Days are getting longer, aren't they. Broken rails & broken pipes will really hang a weight on the schedule. You're expecting more snow. Right now we're at 64° and overcast. Going down to below 22° and the nights will be that way for the rest of the week. Take care of yourself with that weather. Stay safe & stay warm. Gidspeed.
hi Mike it was great to hear the conversation today. thanks for the catch of #5 . i hope you have a great day.
PTC login is a major source of delays, I assume because of flaky communications. A second channel as backup might be nice, or move the train a couple of inches to get the antenna out of a null.
I thought the crew only came from Ottamwa - was that 12 hours?
Hi Mike some nasty weather out there-especially freezing rain/sleet Thanks for viewing #5 especially in the elements-view all good with the delay-have a good safe day, Jeb ☃️
Good afternoon, Jeb; I thank you for stopping by along with the comments. It was kinda balmy here. We are supposed to get more snow tonight and into tomorrow. Bring it on! Shouldn't be more than an inch or so. It is about time we start catching up to the mountains. I really hope that we don't, but more coverage will be nice. Anyway, have a great afternoon and evening. Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
Good afternoon Mike jensen My Name is Damien I heard the train is taking to long and if you see mandy Tell Mandy Damien Says Hi
Good afternoon, Damien; I thank you for dialing in and the comments. Yep. Once they cleared the McCook Sub, they were able to get back to road speed. I don't think they will lose more time getting across the west to Emeryville. I will pass your greeting on to Mandy if I see her. Please take care and stay safe!
It looks a bit chilly there. The snow looks wonderful. Itsbeen chilly here. Today was beautiful. Tomorrow back to Danny freezing. Love and hugs
Good afternoon, Sarah; Thank you for dropping by and the comments. It has been chilly here but what sun we have really felt good this morning. More snow tonight. Speaking of that, Are you ready for the drastic drop in the temps down there? Ouch! Time to find the extra hoodies. Hope that you have a great afternoon and evening. Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
Have a nice day 😊
Good afternoon, John; Thank you for looking in and the comment. I appreciate it. Please take care and stay safe!
Happy New Year,Mike. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you, Sarah. I hope that your New Year is a great one.
Good day Mike. Delay leads to delay. At least you got to chat with a few of the crew. Temperature here the same as you, and similar snow cover, just a smattering. Thanks and stay warm and well.
Good afternoon, Dan; I thank you for dialing in along with the comments. The chat is always a good thing. WE are supposed to get more powder snow tonight and into tomorrow. Bring it on! We will take all we can get. Anyway, have a great afternoon and evening back there. Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
Good afternoon Mike from 28 very light snowy mid Tenn. 30 will be our high today and tomorrow it seems. Wow, lots of platform drama with cold, snow, broken rail, change crew, etc. Mike did you just roll over this AM and grab more covers or just get up early anyway?
Good afternoon, Ben; I thank you for dialing in and the comments. We just hit 29 F. with more sunshine. Snow to happen tonight again. Bring it on. O was awake at my usual tome of 0330 and checking where the train was. It wasn't moving and waiting for the BNSF crew to repair the rail(s). Then came coffee time. Maybe a siesta coming up. I had given thought of yanking the covers back up but once I am awake, that's it. Time to get moving. Some people. LOL!! Anyway, have a great afternoon and evening back there. Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
Howdy Mike from 🇦🇺 stay warm, dry mate & get ourself another coffee ☕️
Good day, Robo; Thank you for stopping by and the comments from Australia. I appreciate it. I am coffeed out for today. May have to have a siesta to take the edge off. Have a great one there. Please take care, stay cool, and safe!
Hi Mike! I would have loved to capture the train this morning but this morning wasn’t going to work for me because my Apple iPad that I use to capture Amtrak trains won’t like the cold at all so I decided to safe then sorry on my iPad and just skip it because this morning was too cold for me to do it because in the single digits, teens, and twenties for temperatures my iPad won’t like it because the cell phones and iPad won’t like cold because the cold effects the Lithum-Batteries that are in them and my iPad has lithium batteries and also a screen that could not be good for it either. You my other videos I have been updating everyone on my cardboard train that I’m making and last year I was updating well I have decided to take pictures of it and go ahead and show it to the public when I get a slideshow video done on it just for people to see for the time being until the locomotive get power in it and also until like springtime to do the Official Trailer and the Official Video of the train after the final tests on the train so you and the UA-cam community can see pictures of the train for the time being so I don’t know for sure how soon will I get that done. Thank you for the video today and take care in Fort Morgan!
Good afternoon and thanks for stopping by as well as the comments. I do understand about the bitter cold. My Sony cams didn't like the really cold either. The viewfinders would start acting up or freeze up. This Canon doesn't seem to have that issue yet. I'll be interested to see your progress with the cardboard train. Sounds unique. Anyway, take care, stay warm, and safe!
I will Mike! For a high today it is 17 degrees here. This morning it was like 0 degrees which why I decided to skip Amtrak today.
Good Afternoon Mike. Makes railroading interesting.Have a good day. I petty much under the weather .
Good afternoon, Gerald; Thank you for tuning in and the comments. It's always something on the platform. I hope that you get to feeling better soon. Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
Good afternoon Mike! Good heavens! They really are running way behind! Sunny and 14 degrees here in the Heartland currently this Monday afternoon! We completely missed all snow and winter weather in my city! So more snow coming for you out there. Have a great Monday out your way Sir! I am enjoying the sunshine here! Mark in Iowa.
Good afternoon, Mark; Thank you for stopping by and the comments. Yep. Frozen rolling stock, piping et al. Broken rails. The chill has messed it all up. With the sun shining here, it is really nice outside right now. The weather guessers ate spouting more snow tonight. Bring it on! This powdery stuff is going away fast. The sublimation has taken its toll on the coating. Hope that you have a great afternoon and evening back there. Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
Good afternoon Mike. One of those days! Looks a little Foggy out your way. Definitely a little warmer for you with the late arrival. Have a great day and stay safe out.
Good afternoon, David; Thank you for stopping by and the comments. There was a lot of haze but little fog. some from the thaw of the snow on the streets. It was nice to stand in the warmth of the sun. Sounds like more snow here tonight. I'll take it! Should be another inch or so. Hope that you have a great afternoon and evening over there. Please take care and stay safe!
Good afternoon! That was an interesting start to your week. I hope you have a good one.
Good evening, Paul; Thank you for dialing in and the comments. It indeed was different. That long stretch west from Hastings and Holdrege was a lot slower than usual. Tey finally made an area where the slow orders were negated and hit it a lick to get here before they ran up against the clock. Have a great evening over there. Please take care and stay safe!
3:36 that was me waving, we got delayed leaving Chicago because a plumbing pipe burst in one of the superliner cars flooding it so they had to rebuild the consist setting us back 2hrs.
Good afternoon, NC_YT_123: I did see your wave! Thanks! I figured it was a viewer but didn't put a name with the wave. Oh well. AMTRAK didn't get explicit with the delay at Chicago, but I thought there may have been issues with the rolling stock. The rail break west of Holdrege was unusual but with the frigid temps back that direction not unheard of. Hope that the rest of your trip is uneventful. Please take care and stay safe! Enjoy the ride!
Hi Mike, finally some of that white stuff-thanks for bearing the elements &the footage of #5, Jeb☃️
Yeah I like that phase 7 livery.
Yeah Mike I'm looking forward to watching more and more videos on your new channel
Male happy Saturday Mike I see the trains are just doing just fine out there.
Yeah Mike I see all that snow out there yesterday. Now we're kind of getting it now here. But looks pretty cold out there.
Beautiful scenes and voices.
Good morning and thank you for looking in. I appreciate it. Please take care and stay safe!
That was very cool!
Good morning and thank you for stopping by. I appreciate it Please take care and stay safe!
Cool video well done!
Good morning and thanks for dialing in along with the comment. I appreciate it. Please take care and stay safe!
Hi Mike! We took the Zephyr over to Denver this weekend from the Western Slope to attend the Broncos/Chiefs game. We'll be catching the #5 at DUS tomorrow morning to return home. The google map shows them a couple of hours late at this point.
Good morning and I thank you for dropping by along with the comments. That ride on #6 beat driving I-70. Hope that you enjoyed the Bronco/Chiefs game. I have not stepped into that stadium. Maybe next year. #5 was right at 2 hours late out of Chicago yesterday. I am watching their run into McCook on the tracker maps now. That should provide some excellent viewing on your return trip. Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
Thanks Mike-hearty soul that you are. Somewhat surprised that platform hadn’t been cleared. It’ll be in interesting to see how 3 & 4 do across Kansas & Missouri-area really getting clobbered.
Good evening, PCBill0622; I thank you for dialing in and the comments. I worked in this type of weather for too many years. It really doesn't bother me as long as I am dressed for it. I have found that my fingers react more and more to the cold but the heat packs in the mittens help. The local company with the contract to clear the platform and the parking area was working to clear as they could. That clear area along the edge of the platform was from an east bound manifest the blew thru here at road speed. I am sure the platform has been cleared for the #6 tonight and the #5 in the morning. They use a blade on an ATV to clear the platform but can't do it while there is rail traffic coming thru. Anyway, have a great evening and a super Monday. Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
Hi Mike checking in late today having a lot of calls for welfare checkups as we have that virus going around here. thanks for the catch of #5 today out in the cold and snow. hope the rest of your day was great.
Good evening, Ken; I thank you for stopping by and the comments. I would think the safety and welfare checks are many back there. Hate to hear about the bug going around. It has been a so-so day. I tweaked my hip somehow here at home and now have a big goose egg right over the hip joint. It's not sore until I turn just so. I'll get by. Please take care, stay warm, and safe back there!
Hey Hey Mr. Mike, Glad to be back with ya for the Amtrak #5 coverage. Thanks for all your hard work. Nice double-spot stop. I got new earphones for Xmas, so your ambient noise catch is great. Nice to be with y'al for your first of the season Ft. Morgan (FMG) snow. I ain't gonna lie, it's always nicer to see it than live in it 😅 I'm originally from Southern California, but lived in Reno NV for 15+ years. Yes it snows in Reno, especially in the Northeast area out in the country where we were ☃️ Here in Houston (HOS) tonight they're calling for the first night of low tenps less than 32F. Not severe "pipe bursting" as they called it. But enough to bring the pets inside (ours are anyway), people dress and stay warm and piipes - Protect outside pipes and drain lawn sprinkler systems and bring outside plants inside as needed. They're also eliding to "snow" ❄️ later in the week. It's more likely more up north in Dallas than here - We'll see. Health is remaining steady and I hope yours as well. We're currently 59F and mostly cloudy @ 1701 Hrs CST. See ya on the next one - Be safe my friend 👍 Okay Papa Geoff, let's Highball On Signal Indication - Here we go on a clear - Copy clear, thanks, OUT 🚦🚦
Good evening, Papa Geoff; Thanks for tuning in and the comments. I am glad you are able to pick out some stuff with the headset. Nice! I have to get into the Best But sound shop to fins a directional mic and mount for this camera body. I hear the horn music as they approach but it seems the camera mics don't hear it. Same with the outbound horn toots. Oh well. We did get a smattering of snow in early November that melted without accumulating anywhere. This was the first to amount to anything, yet the moisture content is very low. Typical of the snow here this time of year and on into March. We may get mot tomorrow evening and into Tuesday. Sadly, way too many have forgotten how to drive in snow or have never had to navigate thru the snow before. I hope the pipes don't pop with the low temps down there. If they are deep enough, they should not get hurt. Good idea to being the pets inside though. It is 1838 MST, and the temp has risen to 17 F. may get a thaw of this stuff yet. LOL! Glad to read you are on an even keel with the health. I tweaked my right hip muscles somehow this morning here at the house. A big old goose egg right over the hip joint. Not sore now but that could change tomorrow. Anyway, I hope that you and yours take care, stay warm and safe down there.!
Hi Mike from Adelaide, Sth Australia, u should be home keeping warm @ that early hour, but thanks for giving us #5 again
Good day, Robo; I thank you for tuning in and the comments from Australia. It didn't take too long before I was home and warming the fingertips. I have spent too many early mornings working in weather like this. If one dresses for it, the weather is tolerable. Kinda. LOL! Habe a great day! Please take care, stay cool and safe in Adelaide!
Sad to say you cannot blame that snow on me as I have frigid and sunny so someone else sent you snow my friend. Stay safe my friend enjoy your snow LOL Take care Mike
Good evening, James; Thanks for dropping by and the comments. I don't put the snow on you. We really needed this coverage. Would like to get more! Now for the frigid temperatures... I think we all have gotten a shot of those. Have a great Evening and a super Monday. Please take care, stay WARM, and safe!
Mike, today would have been the day I looked out the window and said I'm taking this one off.
Good evening, greatnorthern930; Thanks for dialing in along with the comments. Nah. I have not played in snow for well over a year. Tomorrow may be a different story though. LOL! Have a great evening and a super Monday. Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
Thanks for the sight of #5 in the snow Mike. Looks good. We would love to see some of that here in desperately dry Southern California. Though, privileged as always, we would ask that it be in liquid form. Stay warm and don’t slip!
Good evening, Thomas; Thanks for dropping by along with the comments. There is so little moisture in this snow. But any moisture out here is looked upon with a smile. We may see more of this power snow tomorrow evening and into Tuesday. Bring it on! I do hope that you get moisture out there in that liquid form. These weather patterns are strange. Anyway, have a great evening and a super Monday. Please take care and stay safe!
Good afternoon Mike, 2:42pm and pretty good snow coming down. Taffy has taken up position in front of the register. Stay warm and safe, thanks for the Zephyr.
Good afternoon, Ginny; Thank you for stopping by and the comments. Our snow quit several hours back. The temperature is doing a wonderful impression of a yo-yo from 14 F to 17 F and back. The predicted high for tomorrow is 15 F. I seem to have pulled muscles across my right hip. Over did something this morning here at the house. I think I may have to follow Raffy's led and fold up on the couch for the rest of the day. Anyway, I hope that you have a great afternoon and evening back there. Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
Good Mornint Mike! Officially in Grand Junction now and start with BNSF tomorrow! I’ll see this one in Junction! Just saw 6 a bit ago. Have a good day! Stay safe!
Good afternoon, Brandon; Thanks for dropping by and the comments. That is really awesome starting a new career with BNSF! I am envious. Good luck with the training. You'll do well. Please take care and stay safe!
Good late Sunday morning Mike! Just before noon here in the chilly Heartland! Currently 14 degrees here and we have missed the snow so far! It’s all south of us yet! The majority of the winter weather is along and south of US 34 as it runs across Iowa. Kansas and Missouri really got hammered with the ice and snow!! Nice to see number 5 made its stop in Ft. M.! Stay warm today! I’ll be glad to share some of this cold 😂! Have a great Sunday regardless Sir! Mark in Iowa.
Good afternoon, Mark; I thank you for dropping by and the comments. You are still warmer than the 12 F. here. We are to go below zero F. overnight. The snow stopped about 1.5 hours ago and the sky cleared. I had to use my welding hood to see in the snow out there. LOL! Thought it was rather telling that the KC Chiefs airplane was stuck at KC due to icing on the runways. The question is why did they delay departing KC for Denver?? HMMMMMM.... Oh well. I am not a fan of either team and really don't care. I have not heard or seen any data on I-70 across eastern Colo and Kansas. I am sure it is closed somewhere back there. Anyway, have a great afternoon and evening. Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
Good afternoon Mike. If I could give you a nice hot coffee through the phone I would lol. Stay safe out there!
Good afternoon, Ken; I thank you for dialing in and the comments. I'd have accepted that coffee! As it was, the drive-thru coffee house I frequent had my coffee waiting for me. Have a great afternoon and evening back there. Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
First time in a long time I've seen snow there. They had the plow in the parking lot, is that the city or the railroad that does that. Who gets the snow off the platform? Stay safe and drive carefully, I've seen new reports of crashes on the highways.
Good afternoon, Jay; I thank you for tuning in and the comments. AMTRAK now owns the depot and the surrounding area. They have a contract with a cleaning company and a grounds care team the clear the parking and will clear the platform. They have an ATV with a blade and a rotary broom attachment. Have not had occasions to use them for more than a year. Same with my snow-thrower. It was fun to crank it up and clear the sidewalks. The city has nothing to do with the station here. BNSF did won it but ownership was transferred to AMTRAK about 2 years ago. Anyway, they do get it cleared. Have a great afternoon and evening. Please take care and stay safe!
I looked up 3 &4 -both canceled at original today
You got the hand warmers working?
Yep. They don't have any more at Murdock's. They do work quite well in the mittens.
Happy Sunday, Mike. Hope you're enjoying the initial snow of 2025. Quite cold, which is really worse than the snow. QUESTION: who was/is responsible for clearing the platform for a walkway.? Did a good job, very straight. Hope your temps go up a bit. Stay safe, be careful and get home & warm up those hands.
Good afternoon, Jim; I thank you for dialing in along with the comments. The grounds keeper was plowing the parking and had nor touched the platform. That was cleared by an east bound manifest at road speed thru here. Thought I was gonna have to dig out the pickup after he cleared the area. I am sure the platform will be cleared as will the ramps into the building. We will see in the morning. Anyway, please take care, stay warm, and safe back there.
Good morning Mike. Cold and snowy there, supposed to get a few inches and cooler here as well. I like the two car stops, especially during inclement weather. Thanks as usual for getting out in the cold and snow, enjoy your Sunday, perhaps catch a good game on the screen.
Good afternoon, Dan; I thank you for stopping by and the comments. We have about 5 inches in the lawn at the house. This is that very dry powdery snow with very little moisture content. maybe 0.01 inch of real moisture if that much. I won't complain though. It is moisture. That was a very smart move on the conductors' part for the 2-stop passenger work. I'd prefer that type anytime out here. With a killer heater in the pickup cab, I wasn't exposed that long. the heater packs in the mittens helped a bunch today. So did the piping hot coffee afterwards. Have a great afternoon and evening back there. Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
Good to see that the Zeph made it thru the snow, and on time too !! Take care ike and thanks for getting out in this temperature!
Good afternoon, Norman; Thanks for tuning in and the comments. The Zephyr has made it thru worse weather events and at least the heat stayed working in the cars of the train. If the wind had been howling and whipping everything into a blizzard, the cab of the pickup would have been as far as I would have ventured. Less than 3 mph this morning. I can deal with that. Anyway, have a great afternoon and evening. Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
Good morning Mike. What a snow morning. Thanks for getting out in this weather bringing us train #5. Looks like maybe an inch of snow. You have a nice warm day stay safe. I’m still under the weather. They have give some more pills to take.😊😊😊😊😊
Good morning, Gerald; Thanks for dialing in along with the comments. There was about 5 inches on my lawn this morning. Snow just ended about an hour ago. I was happy to have brought the snow removal gear home from the summer shed. The snow-thrower moved it very rapidly and the wide blade push scoop got the areas the thrower won't get to. It is a Troy-built I purchased several years ago, and this was the first use on more than a year. That clear area along the platform was created by an east bound manifest "Q"-train that blew thru at road speed. The snow removal team was on site as I videoed. I hope that you get to feeling better pretty soon. Enough antibiotics will help as will a lot of good old chicken noodle soup (I hate that stuff, but it works for me). Please take care, stay warm, and safe down there!
Hi Mike. I have bright sunshine and 40 degrees outside. No snow in sight.
Good morning, Mike! I'm sitting over here where it's sunny although quite cold. Your video in the snow and cold had me sipping my hot coffee as some kind of auto response to that weather. Thanks for the video. Take care!
Good morning, suz; I thank you for dropping by and the comments. I envied you but the sun is shining here, and the coffee is very warming after moving the snow from the sidewalks at al. It is to go even chillier tonight. One would think this is Colorado! LOL! I am excited to have a recordable snow event finally out here. Very little moisture in the snow but any is better than none. Hope that you have a great afternoon and evening. Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
Good morning Mike, It’s great to hear from these wonderful conductors and great weather of course. Stay safe, warm, and take care.
God morning, Chris; I thank you for looking in and the comments. The had some time to kill this morning but they almost all are friendly. The snow has stopped, and the sky has cleared making for lower temperatures. There is not much moisture in this snow. I'll take another 5 to 6 inches of it to make .05 inch in the gauge. Right now, any moisture is good. Have a great afternoon and evening. Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
Good Morning Mike. Getting alot of snow here in Worden Illinois today also. Have a great day stay warm.
Good afternoon, Kenny; I thank you for tuning in and the comments. We were on the back side of the arctic mass. Maybe more snow tomorrow. I say: "bring it on!". LOL! Have a great Sunday afternoon and evening. Please take care, stay warm, and safe back there!
Good morning Mike from 41 rainy mid Tenn. Nashville north ice & snow but just rain and later thunderstorms here. Feeling better with bronchitis receding than I have been. Now with meds and hot coffee all will be better. What's that white stuff on the ground I see?
Good afternoon, Ben; I thank you for stopping by and the comments. Nice to read you are feeling better. That stuff isn't fun or easy to sluff off. It is 15 F at 1205 MST. and it is headed down to subzero overnight. Should be really chilly in the morning. Anyway, hope that the meds and the hot coffee continue to help. Maybe a bowl of Chicken noodle soup as well. (I can't stand that stuff!) LOL! Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
Good morning Mike. Well the weather guesser did better for you than me. We got nothing on the ground. A little moisture in the air but that was it. Have a great Sunday and keep warm.
Good morning, David; OI thank you for dropping by and the comments. I got to use the snow-thrower today! Whee!!! I have waited well over a year to crank that toy up and move some snow. My fingers even stayed almost warm. LOL! Maybe another shot tomorrow. Radar kept showing the snow band from Greeley southeast thru Wiggins. The cam at Wiggins showed snow there and nothing here until after 1900 last night. I was surprised to see the 5 inches or so on the lawn here. Anyway, have a great afternoon and evening over there. Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
