Dorset's most northerly town, Gillingham hosts an annual illuminated carnival each October. Here are a few scenes of the superb efforts put into the floats by the boys and girls of the area's carnival clubs. These floats can be enjoyed again when Bridgwater, in Somerset, presents Europe's largest illuminated procession on November 5th, from 7pm. This video was shot on a Samsung Tocco-lite phone...

A jaunty waltz accompanies a rather uninspired opening credit sequence to the 1967 hit film "Rocket To The Moon" (released in the USA under the ridiculous title "Those Magnificent Flying Fools") Starring Burl Ives, Dennis Price, Terry-Thomas, Lionel Jeffries, Hermoine Gingold and many fine character actors in supporting roles, you know by the fun overture that this film is not going to take its...

A Wednesday weekly steam excursion is running from London Victoria to Weymouth during the Summer of 2010. The returning train was videoed as it left Weymouth with Sir Lamiel heading and Bitterne tailing. Nice 'cherio' toot from Bitterne as she flies out of view. Captured with a Samsung Tocco 'Lite' mobile phone, hence the mediocre quality.

Much to my disappointment 34067 'Tangmere' replaced the advertised 70013 Oliver Cromwell on this 'Sunny South Special'. However, the sun was shining in Weymouth to welcome the ol' Spam Can into Britain's first seaside resort. Recorded using the video mode of a Fuji FinePix F31fd digital camera.

The 3-masted sailing ship Earl Pembroke takes a party of passengers for a trip off the Dorset coast, around the glorious Weymouth Bay. Light winds gave very gentle sailing conditions so nobody needed to worry about seasickness! We were shadowed by HMS Tyne (P281) a River Class offshore patrol vessel, built by Vosper Thorneycroft in 2003 for the Royal Navy. The island of Portland can be seen and...

Before the days of 24-hour TV most of the English regional broadcasting stations commenced their daily schedules at around 4pm. An 'overture' piece was usually shown along with transmitter information for TV engineers. Westward Television, the ITV franchise which covered the southwest of England from 1961 - 1981, started up each day with what was probably the very best of them. Paul Lewis wrote...

    Of course Westward bordered onto what was then Southern and HTV West-or HTV Wales? Also Channel too of what were then the ITV companies of old at the time. I know when we used to go away at times then I would wonder which ITV companies you would pick up in the area. The TV Times then gave the details of the regional variations there were too.

    +Tubemeister77, Westward weren't made "sacrificial lambs because one of them had to go" - that was Southern TV, who lost theirs in unexplained circumstances to TVS in the same franchise reshuffle. Westward had severe managerial issues from the mid 70s onwards relating to the management at their HQ in Plymouth and the management at their London offices becoming suspicious of each others activities and intentions. Things escalated from there, in 1980 the CEO and founder of Westward, Peter Cadbury, was chucked out by a slim majority of his own boardroom, then the boardroom split over this issue. This news boiled over into the national press, and to the IBA's (Independent Broadcasting Authority's) ears, who were taking applications for the next period of the South West franchise. So, on December 28th 1980, the IBA had announced their decision. (Ironically the ITN newsflash reporting this took place in the middle of a TV Movie that Westward made and were transmitting to the ITV network, a drama starring John Thaw as Sir Francis Drake, IIRC). TSW was to take over the franchise, taking effect from January 1st 1982. But this still didn't stop Westward's problems getting worse. By July 1981, Westward's issues got so bad that the management were unable to continue running the station in the IBA's opinion. So they (the IBA) allowed the TSW management team to take over running the station from August 1st 1981, but on the condition that they use Westward's branding until the official start of the new franchise on New Year's Day 1982. So as the only real difference between Westward and TSW, apart from the branding, was the management team (all the technical staff and presenters stayed), this was effectively Westward ending its franchise early and TSW taking over using Westward branding.

      +Aidan Lunn If I recall, didn't Westward's London office count against them too? Southern also had an application that was very safe and didn't reflect any real ambition to improve services - supposedly they were given an opportunity to re-submit but didn't bother.

    • @aidanlunn7441
      @aidanlunn7441 9 років тому

      Rob Mortimer Westward had *an office* in London, mainly so they could make deals with ITV networks for programming and also sell their programming the world over. Their *headquarters* were in Plymouth. They were wholly independently-owned. With Southern, their ownership was mainly with London-based companies (mainly the publishers DC Thomson) and they might even have had their HQ in London, as another ITV franchise loser, TWW, did. The difference is where their ownership was based or where their HQ were.

    @Tubemeister77 Unfortunately, just when the licences were coming up for renewal, the London based Board of Westward fell out with the managers and programme makers in Plymouth. There being no confidence within the company that the Board and the managers could overcome their difference the then IBA had no choice but to remove Westward's licence to broadcast.

    Great memories of waking up and watching this early in the morning as a kid. Not sure we had a colour telly at first. Fantastic music. This was when TV meant something. They said that digital would mean huge choice, instead we have lost the investment in a few high quality channels and replaced it with hundreds of stations putting out rubbish.

    Further to the stated dates, this particular sequence is no earlier than 1974. The map on the side of the Westward studio gives the game away - it features the late, unlamented county of Avon, which was formed in that year.

    well old enough to remember Westward, I once chatted to Stuart huchinson about the good old days, (in my capacity as media student). but what we need is Hastings Manns 'Westward HO'. That came before the overture you posted up, good as it is. maybe TSW archives have it somewhere. I have a lot of written material on WTV, as well as old video tape. This includes the original clip of Peter Cadbury with the galleon. Also plan a museum display based on early regional broadcasting in Devon.

    very nostalgic, the great days of Westward TV. always makes me feel at home here in the westcountry when I hear or see anything to do with Westward, but there is another piece of music called Westward Ho, written by Hastings Mann. If anyones got please post it up. PS. I once had tea with Stuart Huchison, my heroe, a great man, now departed.
