PSC or ECM Motor? HVAC Blower Motors explained
Had this issue on a job. Polarity was fine, board was not functioning properly and needed to be replaced. Thanks for the help!
Really helpful video! Thanks.
I find myself in need of a new furnace...my old Trane has a cracked heat exchanger. You have answered many of my questions in a manner that I could understand. I do have another question. If I go to a two stage gas furnace and lock it into second stage, how should the tech be evaluating the compatibility of my existing duct work? My house is about 1650 square feet and my old 120,000 btu 80 percent furnace did well. I really appreciate your help!!
First off, thank you for watching! Then let’s start with the old 80% vs the new 90%. The btu rating will be different. The new one smaller actually. When u go up in efficiency, u go down in btu rating. The heat being produced actually goes to the house rather than the flue pipe and out of the house as waste. That’s the easiest way I describe 90+ furnaces. I actually have more videos on 90s vs 80s out there but the new furnace will be smaller. Don’t worry. It will heat better and save u more! I promise with everything I am that you do not want a 120000 btu furnace on a 1650 sq ft house! My house is actually 1675. It has a 70,000 Btu furnace in it at 96% AFUE and is more than enough. They r designed differently and don’t waste the fuel. As far as the 2 stage deal, the furnace will be sized for high stage (full capacity). So an 80,000 Btu furnace is actually around 50 to 55,000 Btu in low, depending on the brand and how they do their %. Biggest thing to worry about is the right size. Make sure they do a load calculation on your home. Sq ft alone is not near enough info to size a furnace. They will take all of this into the calculation. If they do not do one (ask to see it), find a new contractor. No one, I don’t care who they are or what they’ve done can guarantee furnace sizing without one. Again, I have other vids out there about buying a new furnace and other things. There is actually a couple of chapters dedicated to this topic in my book on Amazon. Home Comfort Unlocked. a.co/d/9r9xIAe Be sure to check it out and share with your friends! A lot of people have the same questions! Good luck with the new furnace! Remember, the right contractor and install is everything! Have a great day @SusanShandy
Is there any way to hook up a kill switch or shut off rather than just turning the fuel off?
It is also a kill switch. It shuts down as soon as you turn the knob
What do use to clean the burners?
Wire brush and razor blade!
ANDY,GOOD INFO. THANKS
Got that problem on an air temp furnace
Everyone should run the numbers. For me, I would likely never recoup the cost of a 90%+ furnace. The cost savings isn’t there. The fact they have more parts that can fail is another issue on top of not getting the money back.
Iam owning a HVAC Company with 1 employee. I make 220.000 Euro a year. I do heatingpumps, oil heating systems and ACs in germany. I have permissions for 2 bigger cities for working on natural gas heating systems. Also i do jobs for both cities. Actually our hourly rate begins at 78,50 Euro exkl. salestax. People call me after they fired their hvac guy.
I dont know how this video came up i was watching how to fix a HDMI on a xbox but watched it anyways
What state are from? When temperature is at 0 F (outdoors) a chart says you cant go over 25% humidity inside? Is this accurate?
Humidity in the home is better lower when it's below 0 outside but when you get below 35 to 40% in the home there can be health issues. Dry nose throat things like that. As well as cracking hardwoods separating floor boards n things. I shoot for no lower than 40 35 in my home and in my recommendations n never had issues.
I have a issue of a gas furnace throwing a reversed polarity code, and my polarity is exactly like it needs to be occording to your video what could be my issue?
More than likely a control board failure would be my guess without being there to see it.
EXACTLY 😎🤟
Didn't fix my issue. Still flashing same codes. I have no multi meter.
About to go try this right now because that's the code mine is throwing.
Just had a Lennox installed through Costco in Orange County - we are very happy - customer service was great even after installation for return follow up work that needed to be addressed
My furnace the vents has been blowing out cold air last couple days, maintenance was here all day yesterday trying to fix it but they didnt vents are bloing out cold air as I type this and its 8 degrees outside. I have it set at 72 and its reading 67. Should I call a company that gives free quotes
If you are looking to buy a new one I would
Grandaire 1 stage $8k VS Goodman 2-stage $10k…….. thoughts in FL?
For the house what can you run on this?
dude thank you so much for this video. i just froze my ass off for the night
The reason it died on initial start up is that you forgot to turn off the choke, I believe.
Not a valve change, just the actuator.
That is correct. The downside is, majority of people that watch these videos do not know the difference. So I call it a zone valve and it simplifies that. If I titled the video how to change an actuator, 90% of the people that watch these videos would not know what that meant and wouldn't see that it's for its own valve. Thanks for watching. Be sure to subscribe and have a great day!
Great video!! Just a quick question would 2 stage be better for a house which has less optimal insulation? Parts of the house has cold spots and half of the second floor is above garage and is usually colder during winter and warm during summer. Any thoughts?
Insulation corrections and sealing would always be my go-to before anything. But personally, I know I don't feel that a two-stage furnace would fix that. If it has to run more due to a higher heat loss, it'll probably be in second stage most the time. Anyways. Equipment cannot always fix the situation. Sometimes the building or the space is the situation. And that's what needs to be corrected. If insulation and sealing is not an option due to access ductwork modifications would be my next step. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching! Check out the new book available on Amazon! And have a great day!
@ thanks for your response. If you have to pick between single stage vs two stage with current sup optimal insulation what would you recommend - single vs two stage? Also, can two stage be run as single stage till i fix the insulation and duct work? Thanks in advance. You are doing a great job.
I have a load Calc I can send you to see what exact amount of BTUs your house needs. Takes into account windows, which side of the house they're on, attic insulation and wall insulation, etc...
Get a drill that fits the holes and clean them up
Hi Andy, I have a problem with my furnace in that the main squirrel cage fan is moving in a very strange jerky fashion and it will not come up to speed. Could that kind of behavior come from reversed polarity? I tried to do your tests but mine was different. The leads were covered in plastic boxes. I was also wondering if I just tried to swap those 24v wires and it doesn't fix it, could that damage the circuit board further?
No. Reversed polarity will NOT cause this with the blower motor. The motor module is probably failed and can not find it's phase. If you have squirrels in there you have real problems. Need to have a qualified technician diagnose it. Hope this helps. Be sure to subscribe! Have a great day!
This is the stupidest video I’ve ever wasted my life watching. Are you trolling? Yeah no shit working 90 hours a week will get you more money. we want to know how to earn more money because we are slaving away making $18 an hour
Thank you so much. My family now has heat tonight. Thank you
Thanks for your video! I have a situation like this now: gas valve doesn't open when ignitor glows, there is voltage less then 1v send to gas valve. When I start to check the voltage on the transformer, it suddenly starts to work (gas starts to burn), but it will fail again after half a day. Has been like this in the past 2 days. The error code is 6 flash (Trane XL80): 115 VAC power reversed polarity or poor grounding. I replaced the control board a few years ago myself, can't remember for what reason.
Got a brand new Lennox stage 2 furnace installed. At high output (is that stage 1?) it makes this annoying high pitched noise through the ducts. I don't know what to call it; sound resonance? I'm so disappointed because it's louder then my old furnace at. Maybe it's blowing too hard through my ducts? Should/can I reduce the speed of a blower somewhat? Maybe by 15%. I live in Canada. Winters can be vicious so I'd still like to retain furnaces' ability to power up when needed. Any input would be appreciated.
If it's a 2 stage furnace, then when it starts up yes, it's probably in first stage or "low stage". Could be a blower setting. If it is new then I'd call the installing contractor to fix the issue. I wouldnt mess with it if it is still under warranty. Good luck! Have a great day! Be sure to subscribe!
I also have a Lennox 2 stage and I also experienced the whine noise you mentioned. For me I was using a high Merv filter. My tech told me that there was too much air resistance and the blower was compensating for that. Once I changed to a different filter the noise went away. Do a test and remove the filter when it’s running and you will hear the blower change tones. Tech said to stick with Merv 5 or lower.
@@jeffsworld2 All I had to do is to open up the space between the slits on return air sidewall grilles. I just pushed them a bit up so they're not facing down... That noise was considerably lesser. Later I did get my tech to reduce the blower speed by a bit. Even he said that it was high for my ducts. Yes I do have low mrv filter too. So anyway, all good now. Thanks for you input
It won't damage embroidery?
I haven't had any issue
Wrong, many models are exactly the same except longer warranties are priced higher…. Different model numbers with different prices and warranties. Bad deal…. Bad business practices…
Yes a lot of models are the same. Yes, the better the warranty the higher the price. How is that bad business practice? Pay more to get more? Your comment doesn't make sense. Of course it costs more to get more. What is the issue?
Boom! Fixed first try on the new control board. Thank you!!!
Now it makes Sense since you put it that way... Thank you Man 👍👍
Thank you! I hope it helps! I know I go on a lot but I do want to help. I enjoy all the haters commenting about me being a used car salesman! Lol. I don't sell cars or even HVAC equipment! I'm not in sales at all! Be sure to subscribe and check out the other vids! Thanks again!
Dumb question but realistically how did the voltage get reversed in an existing furnace? Reason I ask is I just replaced my motor ECM and it's reversed.
The video, I did it for the vid purposes. It's my furnace. In most cases, I think it comes from people replacing transformers n not checking when they do it. Or, something in the house has changed electrically. Some cases, I dunno. But I know it's out there and it happens. I believe there is always a reason. If we get to what actually changed... Sometimes, sometimes not. Thanks for watching have a great day!
Información muy útil. Gracias 👍🏼
Higher efficiency often means sacrificing longevity.
Good video.... i have one on getting into hvac on my channel as well
I have an idea to turn a psc motor into a psuedo variable speed motor. It would require 2 relays and a timer. When you get a Y call for cooling, the Low speed tap will be energized for 2 minutes. After 2 minutes, a relay will kill power to relay energizing the Low speed tap and switch it to the normal high speed tap for the remainder of the call for Y. I figure this set up will dehumidify better and also keep the evap coil from freezing by only allowing the Low speed for 2 minutes. Thoughts?
I would think it would work but it's not giving u the full variety speed benefit . The main factor is the true ecm is actual a DC motor which has less energy usage improving efficiency. The use of high and low would help with humidity but personally I would use a variety speed control such as a Fan Handler. They work off of sensors rather than time and can ramp that motor up and down depending on supply air temp both in heating and cooling. Just a thought! I do appreciate the gumption to change things though! I'm always trying to find ways to make things work differently with relays n things. Hope this helps! Be sure to subscribe!
Is this something an HVAC tech would be willing to do ? Seems like 90percent of HVAC companies want to only push new units. It’s disgusting what that industry has turned into. I’m in the Memphis area and it’s shameful. I did manage to install a new Control board after being quoted $1,000.00 by a local HVAC guy. Now there is a flashing code for reverse polarity and I’m nervous about attempting to remedy it myself.
RHEEM
What about Rheem ❓❓
Got quotes of 5 ton Day n Night 14.5 SEER HVAC system, all 3 were Elite Dealers, the $11,000 one has suspended license, 2nd one is licensed and is family business, cut from $16;000 to $12,500, same equipment, 3rd one is licensed and also family run, very honest guy, $9,500, he came with a team of 7 including himself, replaced the system with new condenser, evaporator, gas furnace, Wi-Fi thermostat, same model number and equipment as the other two, did all the details as stated on other 2 quotes in less than 3 hours, very efficient, very clean, the system is running perfectly., he registered the system for warranty right away, I got the warranty certificates via email the same night. This is in LA, you need to do lots of research and get many quotes.
I keep my water heater OFF except when i take a shower. saves $20-25/month.
I've been in my new place for a year. I spent a few months planning. I replaced the 20+ year old A/C+furnace with a cold climate heat pump. I replaced the original aluminum clad windows and sliding doors with new Andersen ones. That alone cut the heating used by 70%! I had the loose blown attic insulation removed and added 4 inches of closed cell spray foam changing the attic to conditioned space. I changed the old gas hot water tank with a instant electric hot water unit. The attic doesn't warmer than 90 even in Arizona summers. In the past winter, it was reaching 100 in February. I updated all the electrical to meet the 2017 NEC or later swapping out every switch and receptacle. And this before I install a solar+battery system.
and how much did you spend on all that to save 80 bucks a month lol.
A lot. But the savings are a lot more than $80 per month. My summer electric bill is 75% less than my neighbors. No more gas bills. And I didn't even mention getting rid of the old bathtub surround and replacing it with a shower stall. Changing the attic to conditioned was important since that's where the indoor air handler lives.
Just in time for thanksgiving
What about ground level crawl space 18 " height. Cooling not needed, heat only 4 months max per year.
Improvements can always be beneficial. Your case doesn't seem too major to me but like I said. It's always beneficial. Every house and every area is different.
Calibrate / Adjust your hygrometer with a saturated-salt test in a ziploc: kosher salt in a dish with a bit of water in it, put it in a ziploc, put your hygrometer in that bag, 24 hours later, it should read 75.0%, if not, adjust your hygrometer; of that hygrometer can not be adjusted to match 75%, discard it.
For nostril/sinus dryness/bleeds : put some olive oil on a Q-Tip .. and you know what to do next, I am sure.
Good video thanks!
What is a reasonable price for new duct work? 10 runs (10ft-30ft each). 2000 sq ft ranch, single story, AC in attic center of the home.
Every area is a different price and also depends on the contractor. Would depend on what type of duct they put in and if it's a union company or not. Unions always higher. There is no one to give an answer to that unless they came out to the house and quoted it
@@andyscornerhvac - non union, simple install, ballpark?
There has to be a per foot range, right? What about in your area? Ranch home, 8ft tall attic, no obstructions.
Im a truck driver at the moment but Am looking at Going into HVAC thanks for the video’
