DIY Brass Hammer | How-To
In this video, I show how to make a brass chisel hammer from scratch. The head of the hammer is 1.25" Dia x 2.5" long. The handle is 3" long and is made from figured maple. The resin is Smooth-On Smooth Cast 326 that I tinted with Sapphire Blue mica powder.
This hammer is based on David Barron's design. Check out his video here:

Simple Circle Cutting Jig For The Band saw
Переглядів 4,1 тис.5 років тому
Today on Plan Build Use, I make a simple jig for cutting circles on the band saw. I built this jig because I needed a way to cut large circles for an upcoming project. This jig can cut circles ranging from 4 inches to 5 feet. The idea for this jig came from an episode of the New Yankee Workshop that I saw many years ago. The downside of this type of jig is it uses a dowel pin as the pivot point...
Shelf Builds Itself!! | A Stop Motion Project
Переглядів 2775 років тому
In this video I use stop motion photography to animate a self building shelf. I built this shelf to organize all my loose hardware. I bought the jars at Walmart, but they can be purchased as a set at almost any grocery store. Stop motion photography is a lot of fun, but man does it take a long time. There's a bunch of great stop motion tutorials on UA-cam. However, if you want me to make a tuto...

Making File Handles

Making a Wheel Marking Gauge
Переглядів 7 тис.5 років тому
Making a Wheel Marking Gauge, by Plan Build Use. As a woodworker, there's nothing more satisfying then seeing two pieces of wood come together in a tight fitting, accurate dovetail or mortise and tenon joint. Whether you're using hand tools, or power tools, it's import to plan the cuts and clearly mark the cut locations on the work piece. A marking gauge is fantastic tool for this task. In this...

Thanks for sharing this. I have a bunch of files that need handles. Questions. Do I make different size handles for different sized files? Why don’t you use a heat press fit of the brass? Heat before mounting and as it cools down it shrinks around the wood. I’m sure you know of this. Just wondering why you chose glue? Thanks, Paul

Beautiful handles and great video. I just need to touch on safety. Never should a person wear gloves when using a rotating spindle. There's a potential for bad things to happen should it get caught up.

I don't think many people own a woodworking lathe, it would be cool to see this really simple part be made without really expensive equipment.

It keeps the wood from splitting. However, I included brass ferrules mostly for aesthetics.

Before today I had been making file handles by casting lead/tin into a length of capped copper tubing and sticking the tang of the file into the molten metal before it solidified. It's heavy (obviously) the cost adds up fast and I don't like it as well as a turned wooden handle/w brass or copper ferrule.

It is end grain. All the strips were cut across the grain then turned end grain up. Cheers.

Thanks! I'm telling you, the metal lathe is one of the best purchases I've made. I'm by no means a "machinist". But I love the flexibility it adds to the shop. If I need a bushing, spacer, or random odd part, I just make it. No searching the internet; no waiting for delivery. Once you can weld and machine a part, the possibilities are endless.

@@planbuilduse5994 , I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on a plasma / router cnc machine for my shop. I've always wanted to combine metal and wood working in my projects and designs. Every time I think I have found a deal on a metal lathe I'm either strapped or it sells before I can make the deal. Lol If you decide you ever want to make and sell one of those, I'd be interested.
