Hi, I'm Gareth, and welcome to my channel. Here I share my outdoor adventures, city strolls, drives, and everyday life. I explore town, the countryside, cook, garden, and have fun with my dogs. I aim to post weekly videos on a Friday, more often when I have plenty of material. Join me as I try and rediscover the joy of slow living in our fast world.
Exploring Temple Newsam Park | A Calming Friday Walk Among the Trees
Join me for a reflective Friday afternoon walk through the beautiful Temple Newsam Park near Leeds. I have for some time been putting commentary on my videos, which has sparked some discussion from commenters about my outlook. I have been called negative among other things, they seem to be missing the point. The truth is, when I start these walks, I might not always feel my best, but the process of being out in nature, breathing fresh air, and moving my body is an incredibly positive thing for both mental and physical well being.
In today’s walk, I return to my original style - just me, you, and the woods, I'll keep my opinions to myself. I had intended to visit the national collection of Chrysanthemums which is on display in the glasshouses at the park. Unfortunatley the doors were locked when I got there. Instead I head off for a walk in the woods. Time to shake off the rather strange week that I have had.
I wander off the beaten path into a small ravine I’ve always wanted to explore, and though I don’t quite make it to the bridge I was aiming for, the journey itself was a rewarding workout. The day ends on a surreal note as I stumble upon a Christmas lights display before its opening time - a peculiar conclusion to a quite peculiar week.
Let’s enjoy the simple beauty of nature together.

Really Intresting! Great to see inner city areas getting Positive coverage from someone who actually knows. Keep doing the good work.
Really enjoying! this channel. Great! to see the 'real areas' of Leeds that never get shown. Please keep up the good work 😊
Thanks that's good to hear, I'll try. 😀👍
The full name of Timothy White's chemist was Timothy White and Taylor. They had a main depot and offices on Burley Road, west of Argie Road.
Thanks for the information I didn't know this. It's a place I remember as we would call in regularly as our bus stop coming into and out of town wasn't far away.
Assume a 4x4 or SUV
No just an average car, a little Toyota city car. Makes bad weather a bit more exciting. 👍
My 6:30 work journey from Holmewood area to Pudsey was interesting. No gritting from Leeds or Bradford councils and very slippery in places. Overshot 2 red lights at about 5mph! Doubt if I'll get a ticket for either though, given the number of people around here that ignore them.
Yeah it was a bit grim and so slippery, I don't think they'd gritted till later. 👍
Looking at that weather now I can't believe that 40 years ago I would just carry on motorcycling as usual. The only nod to the weather would be one of those trawler fishermans style thick woolly jumper under the leather jacket. Longer journeys would involve stopping occasionally to warm the gloves up on the engine.
Same, I had the fisherman's socks in my wellies. 😂👍
Great video, don't fancy all that salt under the car
Thanks, yep it was a bit grimey, I'll have to give the car a good wash next week. 👍
The salt doesn't just wash off' because of all the other stuff that's in it:@@garewalks
I live on the hill and take that view for granted but looks great on film
Thanks it is a cracking view. 👍
That brings back a lot of memories for me, I take it you meant to do a circular route to get home and show your viewers Bradford. 🚘🚘
That's correct, I think I meant to drive into the centre then up Leeds Road or out to the M606 but it had been so long since I'd driven there I lost my bearings. 😂👍
Really enjoying your ramblings physically and figuratively 😊 We find them relaxing easy to watch, making us chuckle at times.Even though I'm a leeds girl I have seen some areas ,history I wasnt aware of. Just what we need in this crazy world we live in at the moment Hope the plans for travelling meridian to meridian work looking forward to see what develops and carly🐶 totally adorable. My hubby is loving the railway history ,just another thought lots of military history ie adwalton moor near oakwell hall would be interesting Much love❤
Thanks, I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. I do try and keep it lighthearted despite my occasional grumpy morning. 😂 I'll check out the battle site. I'm hoping to start the first part of the meridean trip soon. Been a bit cold this week to go to Withernsea!
Do you remember the West Yorkshire Bus Station on Vicar Lane. A more personal question, which part of Leeds were you born and what year would that be.
I remember the red bus station well, I used it a few times each week when I was younger. I cover it in a little more depth in some of my other videos. I wonder why you ask where I was born and when?
Just out of interest, but no worries, I'll still enjoy your videos without that information.
Just out of interest, but no worries, I'll still enjoy your videos without that information.
Thanks for watching, glad you're enjoying the videos. 👍
When you said that part was called the embankment, I think it used to be called sovereign street .
It didn't seem right somehow, Sovereign Street sounds better. 👍
That part of Leeds is unrecognisable these days. I left Leeds in 2003 and came back 20 years later, and I was shocked at all the changes.
It really has changed a lot and quite quickly. 👍
I worked in the homeless shelter at the calls in the 90s.
I think I remember that place it was in a part of town where one is probably needed now.
I remember Howard's timber from the 80s. I used to walk in that street to building college, and there was a chip shop and a few old buildings.
😀👍
The catholic church destroyed many churches in a frenzy of godlessness since the second Vatican council of 1962_65 and replaced them with ugly ,unspiritual mockeries ..those responsible are still in the higher hierarchy but happily facing their reward and judgement. Just remember what they've done when you are asked to mourn their passing...at 78 I don't need lessons in charity and foregiveness from the self declared catholics mob
A beautiful building, a shame this has happened. 👍
The Duchess of York, is now the BOSS designer clothing store, completely gutted with a new frontage, which is why you missed it just after 4mins in.
Thanks, I haven't been on Vicar Lane in a while, that explains it. I thought I was losing the plot a bit when I couldn't find it. I'll pay a bit more attention next time I'm there.👍
Wonderful video, Leeds a city where I was born in 1946, and a city I know longer recognise. My first interview for a job when I was fifteen was at Wallace Arnold Tours The Calls, I got the job and started at WA on Hunslet Road in March of 1961. Keep up the good work and I sympathise with the disappointment in your commentary.
Thank you for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Wallace Arnold, a name I've not heard in a long while. My parents choice for holidays and many wonderful day trips around the north. Happy memories. 👍
Just been watching some of your vids, and as this walk is local to me I was particularly interested. Now my memory may be playing tricks, but I believe there's something special about the bridge you cross over at about minute 27. I can't remember the details but its something along the lines (no pun intended) of being the oldest single span steel built railway bridge in the world? (Railway being horse-drawn rather than mechanical). Apologies if I'm getting confused here, but I'm sure I read something like that some years ago. Also, as you cross the bridge and drop into the field, there's a structure on the right I've always been curious about. Maybe it's a remnant of the Barnbow works, I'm not sure. Anyway, thanks for posting the video, very interesting even though I walk here frequently.
Thanks for watching and commenting. I didn't know that bridge was so historic. It's clad in that sheet metal but under it looking at photos it's quite a grand bridge. It's a listed structure and on Historic England website is this - "as a cast iron overbridge built between 1830 and 1834 on the pioneering, first phase Leeds & Selby Railway, believed to be the earliest cast iron bridge in the world still in-situ over an operational railway, and used as the main access bridge to Barnbow Munitions Factory during the First World War." All the workers at the munitions factory, mostly women were shipped in by train everyday, I think the buildings in this area might be to do with the station.
Many thanks for a great video. Do you know if the city boundaries would have been marked in any way? As far as I know Leeds didn't have walls like York for example. So what was there to stop people and cattle avoiding the gates and just wandering into the town? Really enjoyed the video, I'll do the same walk soon.
Thanks, I didn't find anything to suggest any kind of defences. I guess field and garden fences and buildings formed the boundaries although I'm not sure. It did say eventually the gates gave way to just the bar stones so I guess then anyone could come and go. 👍
Nice to see the old estate, was born on Hawskhead crecent, back in the 60's,so many changes now, thank you for bringing back memmories from the past,by the way the wykebeck was also known as the monkey beck by us crofters.
Thanks for watching. I was surprised how much it had changed. Didn't know that about the Wykebeck. 👍
I think where your grandmother saw the jazz singer was there or thereabouts the starlight club(?lounge) a locally famous dance place ..my mother saw the other Jolson film, the singing fool there
Was there not a pub also there called the golden cock ?
The entrance to the "verts" was crowned by an illuminated sign ..a right turn from the passageway and downstairs led to the Piccadilly bar,a circular one ,now become the swan cafe bar
I wasn't sure if it was the one I filmed or the building where superdrug is just a little further down. He always told me she'd gone to see the first talking picture. I don't remember the starlight club, thanks I'll look it up. 👍
I've found a photo of the cinema on the Leodis database, I was in the right place. The building is almost unchanged apart from the shop front. It was the Theatre de Luxe, 16-17, Kirkgate. Opened 1910, closed 1934.
I had forgotten that but again I looked it up on Leodis, I remember now a pub called the Precinct (there's a photo of it) that was where the Superdrug is on the video. Wondering if this was the Golden Cock. 👍
Great video, I remember doing a day trip to leeds, mainly looking at the old pubs, I did find whitelocks, and went in it, I don't remember the gate at that time, probably about 10 years ago, it was certainly very interesting inside
Thanks 👍 it's a great pub, I've had some fab nights in there. The gate is a modern thing. You did used to be able to walk right through.
Thank you for speaking up for the homeless people. I think the “The great and the good” should be applied to the working classes, those trying to survive on benefits and even those sleeping rough rather than those with money and titles as it is now.
In my experience those with the least are the most generous and they are the ones doing their best to be ‘green’ - recycle, and reuse (trying ever so hard to leave a better world for the following generations). However sometimes for those with the least recycling and reuse is though necessity.
Thanks I try not to do politics on here but sometimes it is hard. Walking around the city sometimes it is terrible to see people living and sleeping in conditions I wouldn't have me dog in, so occasionally feel I should say something if only for painting a true picture those of what Leeds is like in 2024.
I enjoyed your political commentary on this one 😀. I am not sure I would like it but you were very political very video though.
Thanks 👍

nice content keep up the great work 👍👍.... live about 8 miles from here drive it quite regulary drives me crazy the amount of traffic and the jams should of been made duel carridgeway from day one really imo 🙈
Thanks for watching and commenting, much appreciated. Frustrating road 😂
Thanks for sharing your wanderings - I'm really enjoying hearing a different point of view on the developments and history of Leeds.
Thanks, glad you're enjoying the videos, it's something I do for fun and to stay active. Good to hear that people like them. 👍
I used to drive on this road to work every day for 10 years rather than go through the City centre. The direction you were driving when I finished work, the other way in the morning as it was less congested. It's about 18 miles long if you do all of it, which I had to because of where I live. Doesn't look much more congested really, although I realise you weren't driving at peak times.
Everyday blimey! I used to be OK with traffic, I think it's since I got older that I can't really do with it. 👍
I really appreciate your presentation and delivery ..low key, downbeat, personalised and informative
Thanks, kind of you to say. 👍
another journey i use to take very often from derby to york but i always called in for a bite to eat and coffee at a mobile van years ago but obviously you have the costas etc now on these out of town shopping villages.at that time there was rowntrees yorkie bar lorries going to different parts of country going past the clifton moor shopping outlet then. thanks for another great video
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video. You're right there's no shortage of places now on the outskirts York to stop for a coffee. I remember Yorkies coming out while I was still at school, still partial to an occasional one, I think they've shrunk though. 👍
My brother and friend were a witness with the body found in the building site by the river
Blimey that must have been quite a thing for them I remember it happening but didn't know anything about it. There always seemed to be something happening in Leeds in those days!
Lloyds arms under the railway, Smiths arms down from the ice house. The tenaments were still up in the 70s as i remember they film Rag dolly annie with Pat Coombes starred. A childrens programme in the 70s.
That's great thanks I couldn't remember which way round the pubs were. Brilliant about Rag Dolly Annie, didn't know about it, just watched a couple of episodes on UA-cam 😂👍
I look forward to your rain falling in to a pool video. Years ago I liked take photos of rain splashing in puddles. I got lots of lovely crown type splashes that looked great when cropped.
Thanks they sound lovely photos, I might try something like that on the video. 👍
Is there a scenic (and/or steam) railway you could film? Say in the station and then maybe when the train is running on the tracks? I’m not asking you to travel on the train. Just some nice filming of a steam train similar to the shots of modern trains in this video.
There are a couple around here, something like that is on my list of things to do, just finding the time to do everything. 😂
How many statues of women do you have of women in Yorkshire (compared to statues of men and/or mythological figures)?
Not enough I don't think, I'll look out for them when I'm on my travels. They are trying to do more blue plaques now of women.
Is the River Foss in anyway connecting to The Fosse Way?
Looking at The Fosse Way Wikipedia - this looks like a silly question. The Fosse Way looks quite far south
No I didn't know about the Fosse Way I've looked it up, interesting. 👍 there is a footpath the full length of the River Foss, a kind of Foss Way.
Also there are new low rise flat near Glasgow near what looks like a scenic riverbank-I once swapped bus there and the smell was not pleasant.
True, I forget sometimes what ends up in our rivers!
Before you get too jealous of the big riverside house - I wonder how badly they get flooded?
That is true, nice place though when it's not flooding!
Great video, love the driving ones
Thanks, glad you're enjoying them. It's good to hear, I do enjoy making them. I enjoy watching those kind of videos myself, I find it quite relaxing. I think that's where I got the idea. 😀👍
great vid again, i was born in york and and brought up in fulford, although i now live in leeds i still enjoy fishing on the ouse, looking forward to part 2, please keep the vids coming me and the mrs love what you do 😊
Thanks a lot. I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. Good to hear. The next one should be out soon. It just seemed a bit long to put out as one video. I didn't want to cut too much out as I was enjoying the day. 😀👍
At 17:18 - Bridge TJC3/250 at Hunslet is still considered to be on the same railway line from London to Colne , Lancashire. My local bridge is TJC3 / 117 in Colne is considered to still be on the Masborough to Colne line despite the railway line from Skipton to Colne having been removed in 1970. All milages start from London - so Masborough was 161 miles , YOUR location at Hunslet was 193 miles , and my bridge in Colne was at 232 miles. British Rail actually still exists in the form of owning old railway infrastucture , and they still have to maintain these old road bridges and farmers thoroughfares to this day. That's why that number is coded on that bridge. You can google the bridge number and it will tell you the same info on "TJC3 milages". - Mike.
That's fascinating, thank you, in future I will pay more attention to the old painted signs on railway bridges and check them out on Google ĺater. 👍

I've been to Barnsley, but it was years ago, I always think of the film kes, it was filmed in the Barnsley area, late 60s, memories of how schools were then
A good movie, 👌 I have to be honest and say I've never yet been to Barnsley, only the outskirts. Maybe one day, I could make a video.👍
Went to uni in Salford but lived in Barnsley, was a lovely drive apart from the queues at Tintwistle and into Manchester!
@jonjohnson2844 thanks for watching, it was an enjoyable drive. A nice alternative to the M62. 👍
hi following on from part one video good job your not in an electric car your journey would be an extra 2 hours
Very true!
hi thanks for video brings back a few years when i use to travel from hyde down to derby i used the a57 then turned off for glossop and buxton through bakewell and on the a6 to derby nice journey in the spring and summer but terrible in the winter again thanks for your video have a great journey
Thanks for watching and commenting, glad you enjoyed the video. Sounds an interesting trip to Derby, as you say I imagine not pleasant in winter. 👍
great video, best part of the world on a gorgeous day like that
Thanks, it is a fantastic part of the country, had a great day out. 👍
Why is it called "Middleton" Railway when it's in Hunslet ?
I think because the colliery was at Middleton a few miles away and the railway brought the coal into the city. I will probably know more when I get the Middleton park walk completed. 😀👍
