Echo Shadow II Euro Nymphing Fly Rod Review
i run my animas with a sage foundation and its the perfect combo
How is it in saltwater. I'm looking for something to pair with my blitz. Im usually 50/50 with fresh and salt fishing
Enthusiastic thumbnail go crazy
thanks for the review mate..more power 2 ya from DownUnder
Hi mate, Orvis Hydros VS Redington Rise, which one would be your pick? Im in a dilemma... Wanna grab a reel for 6wt. Drag is needed to fight mahseer in jungle rivers
Great review, thanks! I plan to purchase this rod very soon as a step up from my newbie outfit. Will follow your advice on a lightweight reel and plan to purchase Rio Gold fly line. Oh and in 5wt.
folks complaining about the Hydros being made in China check the labels on your clothes and stop shopping at Wal Mart lol people are nuts
Base model doesn't cost 200$
Thanks for the review. I was considering purchasing a Ross reel. Why would you purchase an evolution LTX over the animas? Seems like this has all the features and a Little more drag strength.
I haven’t yet gotten my hands on the evolution yet. Hoping to soon.
Thanks for the vid
GARBAGE REEL FROM BEGGINING TO END
I have an Echo 2/3 that I have on a 3WT rod. I use it for everything freshwater from trout to bass and everything in between. I just used it to catch several large bluegill and a couple of small bass in a small creek near my house. I love the reel. I have dropped in the water a few times. When I took it apart to clean it is totally sealed, in my opinion an excellent feature so far. 🤠
would the hydros II be a good dry fly reel?
Absolutely!
You didn’t give any details or information at all….and where the hell are you looking 👀….lol
Ive had this rod for 5 yes. Casts great! Use half size heavy line. Highly recommended. Yellowstone Anglers liked it a lot. Underated IMO.
Been a while since you posted. Don't give up! I appreciate your reviews. You do a good job of it. Having had a blog for 8 years I know that content is hard to keep coming after a while.
Thanks. I appreciate the encouragement
I’m in tge market for a 4 piece fly rod. Am considering an Echo Lift 8 wt, 9 ft , 4 piece. This yr I’m going on my 4th consecutive fishing trip & trying to get all travel rods. This yr I’m going to Key Largo! (I’m in the Cleveland OH area). Anyway, I’m a so so fisherman. Would you recommend this rod moving fwd. Am probably going to pair it with a Reddington Crosswater 8wt reel which is still in the box. (Wish I would have gotten the behemoth instead). If you don’t recommend the Echo Lift, what rod would you recommend I look into? Thanks for the help.
Maybe you could tell us which model you unboxed? Is that the 4/5?
Yes it’s the 4/5
@@rhythmflyfishing Thanks friend
My Redington rise iii stopped clicking, any idea why?
Thank you
Great review! New subscriber here. Just getting into fly fishing love those click pawl reels
Just a question, for SWINGING HEAVY STREAMER FLIES WITH AN 8 WEIGHT ROD, CAN I USE THE HYDROS V?, MSG Leum
The Hydros V is meant for 9-11 wt rods. Might be a bit oversized for an 8 weight rod. I would suggest using the Hydros IV instead
Not in salt. Both mine are seized.
I had the reel. Nice and light. Problem is the design makes it easy enough for slack line to loop and snag behind the reel, that it happened too often to me and it will to you. Google 'problems with Echo Shadow reel' and you will find this consistant complaint. The reel should have never been marketed and Rhythm Fly Fishing does a diservice to fishermen by not using the reel for some time before reviewing it.
I'm interesting by this fly rod in 9' 8wt, but I don't like fast action rods, All rods of this series had a medium action but 7wt and more are fast action, It's really fast?
Yes that’s the exact model I have in this video. It’s medium fast. I think it would probably work well for you
@@rhythmflyfishing OK thanks for your answer
Not as fast as the Redington Vice, but that's not necessarily a bad thing😉
I have one. No complaints. It’s a great rod for the money.
Good quick review! Spot on from my experiences too! Fish on!
Thanks Nick. Suggestion...look at your camera not your monitor. If you are trying for the classic interview shot, move your camera farther to your right...maybe another 20 degrees or so.
I agree
is there a part two? where you say how they stack up?
Check out the full review at rhythmflyfishing.com
I had cast an earlier version of the Carbon XL paired with Rio Perception and I was stunned at how well it cast. My primary rod is a Douglas Sky G, assorted Hardy, and a Lamson Purist, so I have a good feel for what high-end trout rods are like. For the money, this is a difficult rod to beat. IMHO, I would say you'd need to spend double to get a rod that would be noticeably better.
Ya I would agree. With how lightweight it is, it’s hard to beat for the price
I appreciate the first-hand insight -- I've been wondering about the Run vs Rise.
Glad you found it helpful. You aren’t the first person who has been asking
The Run and the Bravo LT might be two additional comparable reels to add to the mix (all four being great reels for the $). Thanks.
Thanks! I appreciate your thoughts. I’ve had a few other people ask about the run. That might be another good comparison to do with the rise since they’re so similar. Also, I’ve got a bravo. Review will be coming soon. I’ve order the bravo LT so they won’t be far behind
I think both reels are great for the money, but I will buy the rise, looks better IMO.
The Rise is a great feel. My son and I were fortunate enough to float ~16 miles of the Madison outside of Ennis, MT two weeks ago, and we were using borrowed rods (identical Echo XL Carbons). My son's rod had a Rise and my rod had a Sage Spectrum C. Both were great. We preferred the Rise by a sliver, although largely subjective. Really can't go wrong with any of these reels mentioned.
Very interesting review
I have the 6'9 - 3 weight. I've been using it for the last 3 years, for trout, grayling etc, mainly on small streams. For short to medium range presentations with small/medium size flies it's a delight to use and great fun play a fish on. The description of medium action means medium for a glass rod. I have an Epic Fastglass which is noticeably quicker than the Echo, but still relatively slow compared to my graphite rods. I love the flex and feel you get using glass and would also suggest (just my opion) that they're good for someone new to fly fishing to learn on as the geater flexibility gives a better sense of the blank loading.
Thanks! I appreciate your insight!
Just got mine today 😊
Can you use the bad ass for Florida surf fishing? Newbie to fly fishing asking.
I have not yet gotten my hands on the Bad Ass Glass rod to review yet but according to the Echo website it is saltwater ready.
Yes you can. Dudes are using 10wts for dorado and 8wts for bonefishing. I have a 7wt and that thing definitely has the guts to pack a heavy punch. Use a line that has a heavy grain weight and an aggressive taper
No. This reel is actually made of aluminum. Check the weight of it.
From Echo’s website: “A durable, impact-resistant composite frame equipped with a bomb-proof drag system and stainless inner components”
🙌 'PromoSM'
Question please ? Does this reel free drag lightly enough for 7-8x Tippet? Thanks!!
I tested with 5x and 6x. The drag is pretty light. I think you would be ok.
Hi. Is this reel clicking?
It’s not a click-pawl reel if that’s what you’re asking, however it does make a click sound when pulling out line
@@rhythmflyfishing Don't you think people would like to hear what it sounds like?? Maybe??
Great video 🤙
Thanks!
So how is it ?
I watched the review and I have tried all of the models. Two important things to add. The cork handle is too short, like many rods are getting to be. A normal length 7” cork would put the grip further forward which reduces swing weight and you could balance it with a lighter reel. For this reason, the 9 footers are dogs, stick with the shorter lengths you will be much happier. My favorites are is the 8 1/2’ 3 and 4 weights. Other problem is that the snake guides are too small near the tip, causes some fouling under certain conditions and slows line speed. Otherwise I agree the slower forgiving action is nice.
Thanks Barry I appreciate your input
the older model was lighter.
The 3wt Moonshine Epiphany is literal hot garbage. Reset and sensitivity is not there and that is such a huge factor for ESN. I've heard the 2wt Epiphany has significantly better sensitivity and reset but for the money, there are tried and true brands such as Syndicate and Vision that make excellent rods.
I agree that there are a lot of good brands out there. Which epiphany have you tried? The first one is night and day different than the second
@@rhythmflyfishing I tried the Epiphany 3wt and my friend owns a 2 wt. I tried the Vesper in a 2wt also which is significantly better but not worth the price as you can purchase a mid range Sage Sense for the same if not similar price. I personally don't think Moonshine utilizes very good blanks at all.
@@hyunki0510 Thanks for the insight. The Sage Sense is definitely on my list of rods to review
I love my 3wt moonshine vesper
