Light of Kailash Lecture 19 | Magic in Tibetan Buddhism
Light of Kailash Lecture 19 | Magic in Tibetan Buddhism
With Dr. Cameron Bailey
Like other commonly used categories in the study of Buddhism, such as “religion” and “tantra,” the term “magic” has a certain natural appeal that is easy to understand on an intuitive level when interpreting certain phenomenon and discourse within the tradition but is exceedingly difficult to precisely define. Unlike other analytical categories, however, “magic” is often singled out by critics as especially unhelpful, misleading, or even worse in the context of Buddhist studies specifically, a colonialist relic used to denigrate parts of the tradition(s) under study, or employed as an excuse to ignore certain aspects of these tradition(s). However, drawing on Western Renaissance and occult sources it is possible to construct an analytical category of magic with a more positive valance that more accurately captures the symbiotic, if at times strained, relationship between normative religious practice and more specialized magical practice in Buddhist traditions. The discourse of magic as an extra-ordinary form of action for producing super-normal effects suffuses Tibetan literature, from miracle tales of siddhas to practical handbooks of ritual sorcery. While there is no one term in Tibetan that is a precise analogue to the category of “magic” there are a variety of terms that are not readily translatable and understandable without recourse to it.
About the speaker
Dr. Cameron Bailey has an MA in Tibetan Buddhism from Florida State University and a DPhil in Tibetan and Himalayan Studies from the University of Oxford. He is a former assistant professor of Indian Philosophy at Dongguk University, Seoul. He is the author of several articles focusing on the cults and mythology of Tibetan Buddhist protector deities, a contributor on this topic to the Oxford Encyclopedia of Buddhism, and a co-editor and contributor to Tibetan Magic: Past and Present.

The mantras that are still given out to this day to soldiers to protect them from bullets did not work. I've read a couple of accounts of soldiers in shock being stopped in their tracks as people fell around them. Modern weapons are simply superior technology.

UNESCO Includes Dege Parkhang Printing Blocks in Memory of the World Programme. May 2024. It is important to note that DERGE was both ecumenical and had a very devoted and intellectually orientated patron, the royal house of Derge. Jamyang Khyentse Chokyi Lodro came from the stronghold of the Rime movement, Derge. The Derge Sutra Printing Temple (Parkhang in Tibetan) is one of the most important cultural, social, religious and historical institutions in Tibet; China has named it a National Protected Heritage Site. Founded in 1729 by Denba Tsering, the fortieth King of Derge (1678-1739) with the spiritual and literature assistance of the 8th Tai Situ Panchen Chokyi Jungne, the Derge Parkhang is an active center for publication of Tibetan Buddhist sutra, commentaries, and thangka as well as works of history, technology, biography, medicine and literature.

Far too serious discussion of Drukpa Kunley. The essence of Drukpa is in his playfulness, i thought? That's why I started listening. But I TOTALLY LOVE how she forgets her train of thought, makes it appear spontaneous/extempore

Stop hunting, recruiting, little boys to Tibetan monasteries; EVIL. World knows what goes on secrets spread children abused, molested. STILL, Tibetans do nothing. ALWAYS others wiser, smarter, more righteous. Ritual prayer, nirvana, for ADULTS not children. Parents' responsible for children. No child should live entrapped by "celibate" adults; Need to be 18 yrs. old. Cruel, depraved, Tibetan government allows boys taken from their families. Church same thing children assisting Priests. MILLIONS abused, molested, suffering, suicidal, dead. Lives destroyed no longer faithful. Truly righteous men, women, DO NOT recruit children!

Two dozen intelligent boys were sent by Songsten Gampo, ( the first emperor of Tibet to unite Tibetan plateau which include Qinghai) ro India to study Sanskrit literature and grammar. All except Thumi Sambhota died due to tropical diseases, banditry etc. Thumi Sambhota return and composed Tibetan alphabet and two grammar text which is still used to study Tibetan literature. Motive behind the creation of text was for adminstration of vast country spanning over 2.5 million square kilometer of land. Yes, but the point of His craziness is help one to realise THAT that is never harmed. We are not the body-mind and it’s imaginary and fictitious content. This must be seen if we are not to be offended by the likes of these ‘crazy’ people. The Spirit of God is inherently crazy. I know because I am such a one. Being ALREADY Happy is craziness because that STATE is no reliant upon you or anyone else to ‘make’ one happy. We crazy people are not needing approval, ticks and stars etc! Pls understand and surrender and thus be lived by God. 😎🌻

One Bönpo view is he was the son of a Bön siddha, Drenpa Namkha, placed upon a lotus to be found as a miraculous child, he saved many Bön teachings by converting them and incorporating them into Buddhist teachings. Thus preserving the ancient teachings of the first Buddha. Very interesting lecture. The Rubin museum lectures, on UA-cam, mention he has no historical substance in court records of the period he is said to have been in Tibet. It seems ironic that Chinese money was instrumental in building the new statue at Boudanath.
