Home to over 4,400 homeless, Skid Row is notorious in LA for drug dealing, human trafficking, sexual assault and other violent crimes. You wouldn't want to go here in the day, let alone the night! In LA to compete in a professional squash tournament, I took the opportunity to explore this famously dangerous neighbourhood with a fellow player, to see for myself just how unsafe this place really is.
Competition and Culture in LA

A few months ago I travelled to LA to compete in my first professional squash tournament outside of Europe. A Challenger Tour event with £15,000 of prize money up for grabs, I was excited to take my career to the next level. Provided with five start accommodation and competing inside the hotel's sports arena made for a very new experience for me. After the event, I spent a couple of days explor...

Famously the most dangerous area in Karachi, the notorious no-go zone, Lyari, is said to in the past have been run by street gangs, been home to lawlessness, politically motivated violence and high levels of crime due to a limited presence of law enforcement agencies. Home to over 1 million people, I headed into the densely populated slum to see for myself just how dangerous it was.
Attending early morning prayer in Karachi, Pakistan
Переглядів 3,1 тис.Місяць тому
Every morning between the break of dawn and sunrise, the call to prayer takes place all over the Muslim world. As a non-Muslim, I was intrigued as to what it was like to attend Fajr, the first prayer of the day. In this video I show you my experience of attending such a prayer, in one of the hundreds of mosques spread across the city of Karachi, Pakistan.

Wandering the streets of Karachi at midnight is the first thing they tell you not to do when visiting Pakistan. So naturally, I felt compelled at the first available opportunity to give it a go and see for myself just how dangerous Pakistan really is.

welcome to pakistan bro
Shukriya 🙏
Keep at it Will, great videos!
Cheers mate will do! 💪🏻
Enjoyable to watch, but would be nice if you also showed us some of the squash or maybe a short recap of how the match went, what you did well and and on what you will work on for next tournament :)
You make a good point. However I’m trying to make this more of a travel channel than a squash channel. I have the goal of engaging people outside of the squash community. I can drip feed bits of squash in the videos but I don’t want it to feature too heavily. I would like people to understand that the reason for my travel is squash, which I hope adds an interesting angle to the vlogs. But exploring new places and engaging with the local community is the heart of this channel. Thanks for your comment though, I appreciate the feedback 👍🏼

All these appartment buildings and people living on the streets. Well done humanity. 🎉
Yeah something not quite right about that is there 😬
This is indeed a choice. No one lives there that's sober.
@@DH702..are they poor because they are addicted, or addicted because they are poor? Or is there more to it than that?
They just passed the law no More camping
Oh really? Surely they won’t be able to get rid of 4,400 people in skid row?
Will, I thought you were just a pro squash player but clearly you're a social investigator too!! Kudos.
Thanks man! Yeah the pro squash always comes first but I really enjoy exploring the places I visit and documenting what I see through these vlogs 👍🏼
Propaganda.
Class vid mate! What’s the name of that series?
Cheers mate I appreciate that! The series is called Frontier. It’s a drama not a documentary but still super interesting.
@@willsaltersquash thanks mate appreciate the reply - keep smashing it at squash!

Kulfi is the ice cream they eat 🙏 Did you notice that there are no females on the streets so that’s enough to know that it’s not safe there! And chai is never that expensive on the street only in a good restaurant maybe 🤔
Yeah maybe you’re right. As a male I was ok but maybe not so safe for females, I don’t know. Maybe the chai man ripped me off 😂
Give me your number I will show you my Karachi
Lovely video
Thank you 😀
Wow ❤
😃
Stay blessed Brother.
You too brother 👊🏼
Do you have ANC in your recording device? Keep up the work. 😻 Those bananas cost you less than 10 pence. (1 pence: 3.50 PKR almost)
I don’t have ANC but I’ve seen other UA-camrs do so maybe I should look into it. Thanks for clarifying about the bananas, still very cheap 😃 Thanks!
Coming pakistan is just killing your time! This is the most pathetic nation on this planet more even than Mozambique and Mali!!
Karachi being a coastal city, the fish market is one unusual place that you don't find in most other cities. June-July is the stormy monsoon season, and most of the fishing boats stay in, so the fish market is less busy at this time of year, but you can still get to see ocean catch up close: barracuda, kingfish, snappers, groupers, shrimp, lobsters, rays and the occasional shark, if that's what you'd like to see. Also, plenty of fresh fruit in Karachi, many kinds!
That’s amazing! I’ve actually left Karachi now but wish I had known about the fish market. If I go back to Karachi I will visit it 😃
It's the worst season of the year (May-June) for going out to the markets in Karachi. Sweltering hot and humid. Better get some ORS (Oral Rehydration Salt) from any pharmacy/medical store, dissolve it in a bottle of water to make 1 liter, and drink. Even a native Karachiite like me prefers to stay indoors these days because of the weather!
Yes it was very hot! I was also wearing trousers which I’m not used to doing in that heat. I didn’t see anyone wearing shorts so wanted to fit in. Would people find it strange if I wore shorts in Karachi?
@@willsaltersquash Yes, in those downtown areas it is best to wear trousers, or the local shalwar-kameez.
👍

Back in early 2000's this was a no go area, this areas has improved by the passage of time and after few forces operations. 10 20 Gun shot cases were daily were a routine kinda thing back then. Stay safe ! And lyari doesn't have its personal flag. Its a flag of a political party.
Yeah I heard it was really dangerous back then. I may have been killed if I went there 20 years ago. Thanks for commenting about the flags! 😃
@@willsaltersquash btw you should visit 1. port grand karachi. 2. Kolachi restaurant (a bit exp for us but worth the experience) Both are food spots. 3. Bahria town (adventure land , biggest mosque of asia i guess which is under construction and few more places which u might like)

Most schools are mixed be it govt or private only very few are separate at least in cities! but due to cultural reasons most places have separate places for sitting so each gender is comfortable
Ah right thanks for the comment it’s really interesting 👍🏼
Separate schools are better.
@@ssajid40 i dont think so i have studied from all boys for 10 years and i think it takes away a lot of confidence for most when interacting with opposite gender because eventually if you continue your studies, in university you will have to interact and further in corporate
