    What sort of climb/cruise performance changes have you seen with the change from WW to a CATTO prop? Cheers Greg

    • @SkyRayden100
      @SkyRayden100 8 місяців тому

      The 78” is best matched for the S-21. I only had the 78” a few days, but Catto’s cruise pitch is comparable to the WW with a slightly better climb. If you pitch them both down for climb, the Catto makes it a rocket ship. The WW at a flatter pitch is inferior. I’m hoping to get more time on the 78” at some point for more data.

    I read your previous comment about how the TK-1 gear didnt work out well for your S-21 and that you should build a cub if you want to do back country flying. Can you expound on this? I was looking to build an S-21 in a year or so, but im worried its not the back country plane that i think it is...

    • @SkyRayden100
      @SkyRayden100 Рік тому

      A cub will land shorter and is more robust but slower. The S-21 with factory gear is capable to land on 500’ with a clear approach. I’ve landed on baseball sized gravel bars with a backcountry instructor so my opinion has shifted a bit. If you want shock gear (gunna make the S-21 slower) you need to consult RANS and be careful with the tailcone as it is thin aluminum structure. The S-21 is a good compromise for cross county flying with some off field capability.

    • @SEALwannabe100
      @SEALwannabe100 Рік тому

      thanks for the response, i was pretty dead set on the S-21 because of its back country capability, but ive heard from several other owners now that it is simply not the mission it was engineered for. Would you say the traditional tube and fabric planes are the ideal backcountry design?@@SkyRayden100

    • @SkyRayden100
      @SkyRayden100 Рік тому

      Tube and fabric will always land shorter and be a bit more robust, but any airplane abused too much will break. Don’t throw out the S-21 too fast, I like the speed of mine and can live with not landing in 100’. First define your mission and what you mean by backcountry. The S-21 is an awesome airplane and relatively easy build.

    • @SkyRayden100
      @SkyRayden100 Рік тому

      It was a little taller, but not much. I ended up going back to factory gear after damage to my airframe from a hard landing. Consult with RANS on a modification this major for engineering advice. I’ve concluded if you want to fly it like a Carbon Cub, buy a Carbon Cub instead. The S21 is a fantastic airplane stock and FAST with the factory gear legs.

    Hi Branden, just found your S-21 videos - nice job on them. I'm wondering why you feel you need a second header tank? If you wanted to increase the capacity, why not have an aluminum tank built that would straddle both sides and get rid of the fuel cap and hokey bulkhead fittings? My opinion, the header tank is one of the weak points on a very nice airplane.

    I have been thinking of installing the TCW Technologies IBBS-12V-6ah back up system ACS sells. It's available with a wiring harness and is designed to make the installation a simpler with less to figure out. Friends that have Lightspeed ignition system tell me they are famous for lack of help. • @SkyRayden100
      @SkyRayden100 2 роки тому

      I have the TCW back up system for portions of my G3X. I opted for RANS provided back-up system for the ignition. I got some help from RANS on their ignition back-up battery installs they use for their S-LSA S-21. My biggest hurdle was how important is using a shielded wire and shield from ground and where exactly do I need those wires. I also utilized the power select switch as a terminal block so to speak to double up wires for charging the back-up battery. RANS has multiple wires going to the battery instead.

      It is just a terminal block for my positive connections to avoid having too many ring terminals on the master/starter solenoid. Might not need it depending on your fuse or CB layout. eaabuilderslog.org/showmy.php?p=7Z6aiFvQO&z3=&i=40723826&l=66872&t=f&f=05831577-A547-48B4-A9E5-D2FF434070C3.jpeg My plan is the master solenoid gives power to the terminal block. The main fuse panel goes to the terminal block. The avionics relay is energized by the terminal block. And the alternator B lead goes to the terminal block. You may be able to simplify it by placing all those connections on the output of the master solenoid and input of the starter solenoid. I just chose to use the block with more threaded posts.

    A noob here... Question. If you don't deburr after drilling, what will cause the frame to crack?

    • @SkyRayden100
      @SkyRayden100 4 роки тому

      Stress cracks could develop. Less chance of large burs when using a backstop or the metal is sandwiched like the HS frame, but I did find a lot of small chips between there. Here is a Homebuilt Help Video on deburring: ua-cam.com/video/0W1YB8xY0IQ/v-deo.html

    • @pocket5s1
      @pocket5s1 4 роки тому

      The other reason to debur is the burrs can prevent two parts from mating together fully and this is particularly importing on the rivets. If the rivet has any interference that leaves room for pieces to move and over time come loose. When it comes loose the rivet hole will start to elongate causing more looseness.

    I forgot to mention it in the video, but there was a lot of chips and burrs between the two flanges of the spar and doubler. Probably best to match drill the skin before riveting the HS frame. Alternatively, there is a device called a "chip chaser" to pull out the chips and possibly also reduce some burrs if you have riveted the frame already.
