That's great with the tray type bottom plates, try it with the cross drilled type. They have to be assembled before being placed on the head and I have found that type of tool useless for disassembly. The half moon compressor was money well spent.

RICK... If you drain the oil out the crankcase of a 1951 ajs 18sc How long does it take for the oil to get back to the oil tank ???? I have a lot of puddling

Ridenut... Love your videos...I have a 1951 AJS 18S That puddles oil when it sits for a couple of months. I drained the oil out of the crankcase replaced the oil lines . and started up the engine .. watching the return line in the oil tank of which there is NO oil returning.. I let it run for a minute and nothing returning...question --- does a certain amount of oil have to be in the engine case for it to return before it goes back into the oil tank?? Leo

Ciao DC, great videos, what are the engineering options available if the oil pump wear is in the housing. I have looked at a coupe of AJS 18, with poor oil scavenging and believe this is a common problem due to pump housing wear, any advice would be truly appreciated, Lisa

The information in this video is quite wrong. The A.M.C. factory Workshop Instruction Manual gives the following information: "To decide if the bearing tube or the bushes are worn, the spindle diameter is .9995"/.9990, the bush diameter in situ is 1.001". At the factory a pilot reamer 1" diameter is used for these two bushes, for correct alignment." and "The two flanged bushes are housed in steel sleeves which are not supplied separately." Some side street manufacturers made replica tubes (or spindles) with diameter 1.000" and these spindles are of course useless. Preben, Denmark.

I had a ZB34 back in the sixties, I was an apprentice fitter & turner, it was pretty rough so I stripped it down and rebuilt it. Scouring junk yards for parts was the Saturday job. It turned out ok a good performer as long as you were not in traffic, that Amal TT RN carb had no idle, you were not popular at a traffic light.

I think, anno 2023 , the way to go is using a digital caliper.......set the caliper at 2 inches or so, have the piston push up the measring rod of the caliper, set it to zero, then push out to 7/16 inch for 39 degrees.....turn the crankshaft and wait till the piston touches the measuring rod again at 7/16 in compression stroke....
