The Bittersweet Tragedy of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners | An Adaptation Done Right
Most video game adaptations get a bad rep for just not being very good. However, once in a blue moon an adaptation is put into the hands of people that actually give a damn about the source material, such as the recently released anime by Studio Trigger, "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners".

The Complex Simplicity of Haibane Renmei | When Less Is More

Various shows tend to make you overthink and jumble your thoughts on the overarching message, and hence become too linear. Yet few so in between permitting the viewer to make their own assumptions on what the work is actually about. Such as in the case of Haibane Renmei, a simple yet difficult show about angels, thoughts, and our own personal problems. The interview mentioned in the video: ua-c...

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence - The Incredible Sequel That Deserved Better

After the release of the 1995 film, Ghost in the Shell, Mamoru Oshii took a break from the franchise for almost a decade before returning in 2004 to make a sequel bigger and bolder than its predecessor. Sadly albeit the sequel's deep science-fiction themes and blend of 2D and 3D animation, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence was overlooked by filmmakers for simply being animated. Links to where you...

For clarification of what was claimed it was my latest video on the "Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song" anime. The claim did not give any reason to being claimed (eg. whether it was visual or audible) nor the actual copyrighted material or a timestamp. So yeah, sadly you might have to say goodbye to one of my most favorite videos I made. You truly have no shame UA-cam (and Sony Music Japan).

Ghost in the Shell - The Failure of Live-Action
I felt the pacing in the second half was way too awkward, but this movie stands nearly as high up as the first. I love the jazzy noir tone in the first half and the absolute mind melting 2nd half. Absolute banger of a movie
First seeing this 2d anime and cgi mix perfect for the first time was amazing to first see
I feel like you should watch "The Wire" You'd Like It Alot
Great video. Personally, gits is one of my favorite franchises. Saw it as a kid without knowing what it was. I was hooked. As far as science fiction writing, this is the best stuff I’ve ever come across. It would be nice to see western scifi productions achieve levels of sophistication as deep as gits, sadly however they are more into cheap explosions, sparks and pyrotechnics, and very 1 dimensional plots..
Why is gosling here? 😂 12:29
it was in theater for a short while a couple months ago. changed my life
😭
14:28 - These are also the words written upon the face of the Hebrew Golem- the biblical automaton- and in order to make the golem inanimate, you had to remove the first two letters of the sigil- from Truth, to Death- in order to silence it.
Peeps never even got what the "innocence" part was all about.

soul eater gurrou loggan undeadunluck kiaju 8 dead leaves um just check them out and im on number 4 on this i hear it gets better ill let you know
I'm sorry but I refuse to consider the garbage 1st year philosophy student garbage talk that spews out as being anywhere near the 1st movie, it just is half baked and you have to insert your own shit to make it comprehendible
When I first saw GITS 2 at the age of 13, I felt that way too. I had to go through university and deal with a few things in life before GITS 2 made a lot more sense, and subsequently became a much better film.
The original Locus Solus ideas feels eerily similar to people reliving their dead relatives pictures with AI nowadays
haven't watched the video yet but saying a movie that got nominated for the palme d'or deserved better seems a bit too bold isnt it?😅
Hi! You're not wrong there at all. And I don't know if you've seen the video by now but I do bring that accomplishment up in the final section. I tried to intentionally hyperbolize that point as to demonstrate how even an award is not enough to have people's eyes finally gaze upon it in a more multifaceted manner. I did so by showing how the few open minded critics did see something special in it rather than just some Japanese cartoon as well as made a joke of it being the only other animated D'or nominee next to Shrek 2. Because at least from personal experience the sequel is still much more overlooked and rarely discussed as everyone always just goes to talking about the original or SAC instead. Hope this cleared my choice of words up.
🍻 It is show I have watched twice and need to watch again Great video 💯
Just saw it in theaters... they played a mini doc, oshii states that dogs are technically created by man, bred and modified for the needs of man, you can see the paralells between dogs and robotics, ai etc. Batou imo has a basset hound because it reminds him of the major; something technically created by man kind, molded to the needs of man, but unlike the major, the sweet cute dog cannot be disposed of once its purpose its fufilled, unlike the major, who would be significantly altered if not decomissioned after the government is done with her, compounded by the fact that her body is government property The dog must be fed, and cared for regardless of its usefulness, regardless if it outlives the purpose of its breed, wheter its being a dog for utilitarian purposes or a dog for companionship, young or old, you cant just dispose of the dog on a whim and get a new model... the truest mark of counter culture in a world of cybernetics, ai, and robotics. This is just one small thing to look into with this film... its dense
I'm about to go to a showing of the remastered version of Innocence tonight. I'm really excited to see it again. I saw it in the theater on its release and I found it to be woefully slow-paced and I didn't like that it had the characters of Batou and Togusa having lengthly conversations with one another about philosophy - I felt like it was telling, where the original movie had been so good at showing. Also, while the original movie does move at a deliberate pace, I remember feeling like Innocence got lost in its navel-gazing for long periods. I was much younger then (obviously) and I'm looking forward to coming back to it with fresh eyes and a more mature viewpoint!
I just saw the remaster in theater yesterday! Hope you enjoy as much as I did!
The film theater part is a direct reference to infinite jest which is literally about a film that is so enthralling terrorists are trying to weaponize it
Agreed. Whole heartedly.
GITS and GITS2 are equally significant in my opinion.
when i saw this move in theaters. like everyone else, got bored and move around in my chair a lot. but this film stuck in teh back of my mind for a long while and coming back to it years after, it is one of my favorite films ever.
Ayeee, idk where youve been but im your 500th subscriber, lol. Congrats 🎉😅
To me the fact that the anime adaptation was so bad for Tokyo ghoul was what got me into reading manga in the first so in a way I'm kind of grateful for the fact that I experienced the anime even though it was a bad adaptation I got to read series that will probably never get animated and I really grown to appreciate how varied and unique different manga art styles can be
While not a top tier SoL for me its a decent underrated sohw I only found through a previous internet forum I used to frequent
Ergo proxy has best example of identity crisis, one only matched by Homunculus.
Ive had this on my watchlist for a long time, and I love Ghost in the Shell, so I will definitely be bumping it up a few slots!
Everything you said about this in this video is so correct. Here's the thing, I grew up with both the prequels and the originals as a kid and Star Wars wouldn't have its interesting story telling without either one of them. A lot of people don't give the prequels enough credit because even though they had their moments, it still managed to introduce new comer fans into Star Wars and built a bigger phenomenon. "Revenge of the Sith" is the best one out of the series because it shows the tragedy of the heroic character's fall from grace and his transformation into the iconic villain. It should be given a lot more credit than it deserves. It's right up there with "Empire Strikes Back".
They literally show someone infected 30seconds in to this movie. But a quiet place does it that ruins the movie in some way. Stop it. If that is your complaint of that movie, it's pretty weak.
The thing about Asuka is that she was a very divisive character; you either love her or can't stand her. But she still is one of the most interesting out of the list of brilliantly written characters in Evangelion. She can be unbearable because of how mean and cruel she can get towards Shinji and Rei or other characters. But at the same time, she's a truly motivated person because she is obsessed with wanting to be the best pilot there is and surpass everyone. But this unhealthy way of thinking is what led to her downfall. But at the same time, she (like all the other characters) had redemption involving having to connect with people. The thing that makes Evangelion truly scary is that its characters are relatable. When we see ourselves reflected in the characters, we understand Anno. This is a great analysis!
Innocence, for me, was one of the most incredibly beautiful sequels to Ghost in the Shell ever created. The animation was so ahead of its time and it deserves more recognition.
That voice of hers in english dub did stuff to me, let's not forget about that little detail ;)
Praying to heavens above every night so we can get a 3rd Gits movie from Oshi
It certainly was better than Season 1, even when it comes to music
Prob one of the best retrospective/analysis of EP on YT - no filler, no parroting of the same points every other cookie-cutter analysis keep regurgitating, plus some well-deserved attention for Iggy. Hats-off to you, sir. Now I'm gonna have to check out your GiTS videos (haven't seen Cowboy Bebop yet, another shameful oversight on my part)
I need that book.. I love GITS 2 Innocence. I like it more than 1995 movie. But it's hard because of how much I love the 1995 movie, it's just that GITS 2 tickle the philosophy parts of my brain and the visuals of the shoot out in the small store or the loop-trap is so stunning. I think in terms of a movie, GITS 1995 is the better movie, I love that version of Motoko, she's relatable unlike the amazonian she becomes in later incarnations. But GITS 2 Innocence is an experience. I guess.
GITS live action is great and I will die on this hill
Thank you for this. I'm going to see this movie again. I was looking forward to seeing it for the first time, but when I did I came away with the impression that the philosophical success of the first movie had gone to the creators head and he had doubled down on the philosophy with too many quotations. Seemed to slow and complicate the story more than it needed to be. I see what my second viewing will do for me.
Are you going to do Tokyo Ghoul Re:? It’s way worse than Root A because not only did the animation took a massive downgrade, but they skipped a lot of moments from the manga, especially the 24th Ward Raid arc and the ending as well. In the manga, the reason why he turned into the Dragon Centipede was because after he was crippled by Juuzo, he soon realized that he’ll never get to be their when Touka gives birth to their child. The anime decided to have Kaneki’s other personas tell him to get up without any substance to what caused him to go berserk. Also, Furata, the final boss of Tokyo Ghoul was the one who led the raid at the 24th ward, not Matsuki acting out on his/her own just so he/she can kill a pregnant Touka.
thanks for spread the ergo proxy word
All I wanted was a simple study on cold characters. I got this. Tzeentch did me dirty today.
This video is great and as underrated as the Innocence itself.
I'm late to this channel, but have you learned since writing this that the "riev" part of autorievs is french for "dream" (rêve pronounced like "rave") so they are "self-dream" units, in other words A.I. units, whose "infection" is their awakening: "cogito ergo sum" versus "cogito ergo proxy" - I think therefore I am someone else.
I really respect this channel
Respect man. It's always dope to me when people share honest inspiring content like this. And I felt this way about Uncle Iroh from Avatar.
Its a psychic parasite like a organic computer virus to call them zombies is wrong its a psyop that intended to target language wich creates chaos
Awesome video! Usually these movies which extremely philosophical and much less pratical aren't my cup of tea, but in the particular case of Innocence I found myself so interested in the movie and the questions Oshii was asking/trying to answer that I found myself pausing, repeating scenes and searching out the various philosophers and architectures mentioned and shown in the various scenes out of pure fascination. Truly a masterpiece.
I watched the first season of sac 2045, I had to force myself to finish the show. One thing I don't understand, when I saw ghost in the shell arise, there were tons of people walking around in the streets. In sac 2045, most of the roads were just empty of life. Literally. It did not feel like ghost in the shell at all. I was disappointed to say the least.
Thank you so much for this video. I love that you mentioned the style of Ergo Proxy. The anime does have flaws but its atmosphere is one of a kind.
Great work on this video, very well informed and interesting points to look at in this anime. I love psychological anime (Steins;Gate being my number one anime of all time) and finally got to watch this masterpiece and it lived up to the hype! I would also like to note some things mentioned in the video. You stated about the cogito virus making the auto-reivs pray to god. While this statement is true, there is another depiction to this, which is they only appear to pray once either proxies are nearby or in a serious event involving proxies, i.e. final episode when the dome is collapsing. Also you suggested that we give our own depictions of the opening song, kiri. In the chorus, a line states "Believe in me and drink the wine and take my hand and fill me up" which would be referring to the final supper of Jesus. Jesus gave his disciples "wine" and bread, with wine being referred to as his blood, and bread as his body for them to consume to have himself within their bodies to be part of him. This could be for ergo proxy as those who believe that religion will save them, quoting the verses of their biblical teaching, as some religious followers do the same either in prayer or in imminent death to be saved in the after-life. Hope that gave some insight. Keep up the great work and have a wonderful day!
