    The problem with Joker Folie A Deux and Megalopolis have much more to do with their failed execution from the script, not necessarily for the crisis. I still believe cinema hasn't healed at all, it's a long recovery that needs to be given time. And yet, cinema has given signs of not surrendering. It's still a little soon to given cinema for dead.

    I agree, I wish that they would show films at the theater for longer. I watched The Substance 3 days ago and I loved it so much, and it's so much better on the big screen but I can't even see it in theaters again because it's on streaming next week already!! (on some overpriced new streaming service i never even heard of before, too!!!!!!)

    These were big budget films trying to appear arthouse/indy. Joker writers got caught sniffing their own farts and thusly decided to attack their fans with a script they knew they would hate. They owned the chuds and destroyed their own product. Well done... Megalopolis seemed like there was zero quality control. Like everyone walked around too scared to provide feedback to the director. The script was fine but as you said, without loving history, you'd be lost in that film.

    I dont disagree with your argument but indie movies like whiplash are still being released in a small number of theatres and go bigger as they become succesful like the substance for example, and megalopilis and the joker are wide releases from the get go

    9:50 So just…delete TikTok? I never started using it to begin with and doesn’t sound like I’ve missed much. Seems there is only being addicted to it and not using it at all and no middle ground in between those two states. I deleted Twitter and my other social media accounts in 2021 and have been a much happier person since then. Now I’m just on discord on YT. The most immediate solution to a lot of TikTok problems is just not to use it, and if you can’t bring yourself to delete it, they already got their hooks in you.

    I think with the state of the world right now and how expensive many theatres are people can’t justify going in theatres anymore. Risking a ton of money on tickets and snacks for a movie they know will arrive on some streaming service in a few months. So many factors play into this decline such as how most high budget films that come out now are sequels, prequels, remakes or adaptations. People are just tired and with the Marvel craze years ago and the streaming service boom people don’t really appreciate a good film anymore. That goes for the viewers and even the studios/producers. Movies have been reduced to content really. Just something you put on in the background really. The only way I see things turning around is if one of the major studios actually pushes for a new direction and starts taking more risks. Right now cinema is stagnating and people aren’t really seeking it out because they know what they’ll get in return, it’s not as fun anymore. We just gotta keep our fingers crossed that the creatives behind this new era get their shot and make people want to go out to theatres again. Not saying everything released needs to be a groundbreaking Kubrick level masterpiece, but Hollywood needs to take a chance on creative minds that are outside their little nepo bubble if they want longevity. I think Megalopolis and Joker didn’t work for a variety of reasons. People see Joker not as a risk but as a gimmicky cash grab trying to capitalize off the first (kinda what it is) that didn’t really need a sequel, hell the movie itself really serves no purpose to the original film which should’ve been standalone. Gaga was the only thing I was excited for in it and she was hardly there. On the other hand a film like Megalopolis in any film era wouldn’t have been successful box office wise. I can respect it for what it is but it’s a 40 year old passion project by a washed up director. It’s not a bad movie but it’s not meant to be enjoyable or accessible to the average movie watcher. Great vid definitely don’t be afraid of going more in depth with a longer video essay this is such a convoluted topic.

    I also had this movie!! i’m an early 2000s baby so I was also surprised by the year it came out. i’m pretty sure my mom bought it from five below or walmart tho, which would explain the date gap.

    Good video. Subscribed. No doubt 10 years ago megalopolis would have done better. Especially with a longer release period. More coppola fans would have been alive, and it’s going to be one of *those* movies that gets talked about forever…. ad nauseum. Also, coppola probably would have made a better movie 10 years ago. I wish he would’ve cast Nicolas Cage instead of Adam Driver for Caesar as well.

    We are currently living in an era in which content has surpassed art. There are just a few good films that come out, and they are done on a shoestring budget and are sadly not recognised or well disseminated. For the same reason that cinema is fading, it is a business to produce material regardless of whether it is good or not, which is why we only get sequels, prequels, and remakes. At the very least, there are still foreign language films that are concerned with the fundamental elements that contributed to the creation of the art form.

    • @HardCR0W
      @HardCR0W 6 днів тому

      It is not a problem of just recent times. Content always surprassed art. 20th century was filled with boring and reused movies made for masses, the industry was stagnating. That's why avangarde became a thing, young directors came in and tried something else. Same goes with books before that. It's just a cycle that's repeating over and over again.

    • @r.a.mpictures
      @r.a.mpictures 10 годин тому

      @HardCR0W I've never denied that art has always been on top... certainly, content has always existed since it's easier to create something terrible than great! However, in today's age of social media and streaming, the shift has soared material to astronomical heights because it is easier to make less artistic films as like I said before, the (content) can be watched on any device, as its accessible everywhere which film companies pounce on to make 💰.

  • @livliv2884
    @livliv2884 12 днів тому

    I think it is the people. We are so ruined with the entertainment we consume now. The short form content and just simple digestible content. People want big easy plots. I think whiplash would flop in this time. I have not seen megalopolis, but the joker was a masterpiece with a lot of symbolism, people saw the singing as a musical but if you see they sing in the fantasy, they are not just singing! That’s also why he begs her to stop singing when he gives up being the joker. People need to engage their brain more and wanting to learn more and not just be entertained

    • @markanderson7236

      @jasonfenton8250 11 днів тому

      I thought that Joker 2 was a bit... flat in some ways, didn't love it. But I really didn't mind it being a musical to a degree, the singing had a clear narrative function like you said. People just have an irrational hatred of musicals, and the critics of Joker 2 really don't seem to say anything about it besides "it's had because it's a musical" which is just very shallow.

    When you started talking about how we can’t do anything without some type of background noise, I kinda had to pause my watercolor because oh yeah okay just call me out like that /silly. It is disheartening to see how repetitive people are, and how little they’re willing to give anything their full attention. I’m guilty of this too, unfortunately, but we have the power to be better. Writing down lists of what need to be done, putting limits on apps you scroll through too often, picking up a hobby to busy yourself with, these are all ways we can try to stop consuming so much media all at once. Streaming services are some of the worst things Cinema has to face because of how convenient it is. Being able to wait for a movie rather than going out to watch it because of how expensive theaters are and how much easier it is to click on an app is both something that should be cool in retrospect, but definitely detrimental right now. If anything, convenience is the root of a lot of these problems. It’s more convenient to scroll through tiktok than to wait through a commercial break. It’s more convenient to go along with everyone else than to try and say something original. It’s more convenient to fork over money to a streaming service than to go out and experience the movie in a theater. It’s something that we can be proud of, having a way to make things easier, but not at the expense of making someone’s passions and work obsolete compared to what’s easiest to us.

    There was one semester where the housing situation was essentially apartments, with shared living room/kitchen/balcony(!!!), and three bedrooms which each had their own attached bathroom. The thing is, two of the bedrooms were doubles, and the last one was a triple. Even though I was friends with the people I shared the triple with, and I enjoyed spending time with them, it never actually felt like the room was mine. It really felt more like a place that I went to sleep, shower, and get dressed. Obviously that was never their fault, and there were even times when they would let me have the room to myself for an hour or two if I just needed to decompress alone, but even then I felt bad cause I felt like I was preventing them access to THEIR room! It was somewhat frustrating to feel like I didn't have any space that was just mine, even though I had so many places where I was more than welcome (other friends in other apartments who were happy to let me hang in their places or sleep on their couch). I think it's really easy to forget how important it can be to have a space, no matter how small or simple, that is Truly Just For You.

    I never, ever comment on YT videos. And for the first time in years... I've come here to say that finally, FINALLY someone is talking about this. I've asked so many people if they remember this. NO ONE EVER DOES!!! I think about it a few times a month 🥸 I also remember gingko leaves being part of the show. It was something to the effect of 'let's find/spot x number of [insert item here] in the episode and each time a leaf will appear in the top right corner of the screen when we do.' This deeply affected my psyche. To this day, I love gingko leaves so much because they symbolize nostalgia for me. I remember when I saw gingko leaves randomly in HS. I guess the memory of the gingkos being in the show first resurfaced then. I couldn't place it at first though... I knew I just felt this weird, yet calming, sense of nostalgia looking at a gingko leaf lol
