Wallaby hunting, Waimate, New Zealand
Переглядів 4,2 тис.5 місяців тому
My nephew Daniel and I went hunting Wallabies near Waimate in the South Island of New Zealand. These animals are in pest proportions and destroy lots of vegetation. Being predominantly nocturnal they are very hard to hunt in the daytime, preferring to hide in the bush. If you get lucky you might see a Wallaby warming up in the sun after a frosty night. This made for some quite long shots in the...
Routeburn track
Переглядів 180Рік тому
March 2023 six of us walked the Routeburn track starting on the Queenstown side and finishing at the divide on the Milford road. Our plane going down to Queenstown had to turn around because of bad weather so we were a day late starting and had to combine two days into one. That meant that we had to carry on past our intended first nights stay at the Routeburn falls hut and continue on to the M...

Quest for the first point of the year
Переглядів 1642 роки тому
Every Jan the first I go out early with my dogs to try for the first point of the year. My rules say that it has to be a game bird preferably Pheasant or Quail. We did find a duck this year and two pheasants that I totally missed because we were almost back home and I had given up by then. The dogs were working something just prior and you know what they say? "Always trust your dog"

New Zealand Grebe or Dabchick
Переглядів 1653 роки тому
This pair of NZ Dabchick are resident on a pond near my place. They have successfully hatched only one of probably two or three eggs. This video shows the shared parenting where one of the parents dives for food while the other parent carries the chick on its back under its wings. Roles are reversed periodically where the chick is shaken from the host parent who then dives so the chick has no o...

Hunting in Rotoehu forest New Zealand
One of the best points on a Pheasant that I have ever seen.
Переглядів 1,1 тис.4 роки тому
My Irish Setter "Tama" with a find and point on a Cock Pheasant. He found this bird close to150 meters from me and he held it for what seemed like an eternity until I arrived and managed to shoot the bird as it flushed. It came down in the steep gully across a fence and lots of gorse. The retrieve was done by my other dog, "Red". We were hunting in a very tough place near the New Zealand north ...

So do you train them to do that or they’re just naturally hunters?

Great Video David, my relationship with Stewart Island goes back to the 80's it could be the 70s, my Aunt was the district nurse on the island and a very keen tramper, the 1st trip it was planned for us to fly into the masons, but the plane crashed on masons beach before we had left invercargill, the second trip we walked from freds camp to masons and spent a couple of days in a tent while a low went over the island which was an major storm! a fantastic place!

Beautiful! We've got a few Irish Doodle puppies that show multiple signs of being excellent hunting dogs. How would you recommend I connect them with the best people to provide them the opportunity to live life to their fullest potential and be in a hunting home with training.

who did you set up the flights with David??

    • @davidsheely2125
      @davidsheely2125 3 роки тому

Hi Andrew, I didn't organise the flights. My mate Stu Millar did. I think he contacted Stewart Island air and organised it from there. First you have to talk to DOC for hut bookings then the airline as it is tide dependant. We were lucky that low tide was at 7.30 am and the weather was good for the whole trip.

Looks like you had a ball dave. I found the deer signs always seem to be on the coast there . Think they must get minerals from the seaweed that washes up or the salt off the plants from the sea spray .
