Vintage Japanese Yamaha CA-2010 Stereo Amplifier meters in action playing happy lo-fi music
There was a discussion at Audio Science Review about amplifiers that have good looking VU meters and I think the ones on my Yamaha CA-2010 Stereo Amplifier are really beautiful so I filmed this close-up video of the meters in action playing some chill music.
Let me know if you liked this video of music and closeups of equipment - I might make more of these!
Equipment (while I love Technics, I also love vintage Yamaha as well):
Amplifier: Yamaha CA-2010
Speakers: Magnepan MMG
DAC: Topping E50 (Macbook via USB) to Yamaha via AUX
The audio track is Staycation by Corbyn Kites.

Does the $950 Okki Nokki One clean records better than the $250 Squeaky Clean Mk3?
Переглядів 28 тис.2 роки тому
I *really* hate snaps/crackles/pops (the sounds, not the cereal), when I’m listening to my records. I’m on a mission to find the best way to clean my records, and along the way, I want to share the different tools that I’m using. I recently picked up the new Okki Nokki One vacuum record cleaning system, and I wanted to compare to another vacuum record cleaner that I have, the Squeaky Clean Mk3....

I used to have the Technics SL-10 Linear Tracking turntable similar to the one on your shelf. Bought it new when I was 17. Beautiful piece of equipment but my SL1200MKII at that time was better. Really enjoyed both turntables though and I put a Moving Coil cartridge on the SL-!0. Sounded great but the 1200MKII did sound better.

I bought these new when I was 14 (1981) and they were one of the first really good mini speakers which was still a novelty at the time. Excellent build quality, 60 Watts power handling, and they sounded great for their size. They also have a resettable tweeter protection button on the back. Regularly fed them 55 Watts with my Technics SU-V4A integrated amplifier which had the fluorescent power meters. I remember how excited I was when I got these as they were my first decent set of speakers.

I would rather say that the Edifier is not the problem. You got the wrong speakers from the start. You have needs that this speaker was not made to meet. Here again you put it in your living room when it is a studio monitor. And then you will say that this speaker is not good. In short, pretty stupid as a video.

This is not what you would call a deep analysis, it is a stupid analysis. She is looking for an experience that the MR4 is not made for in the first place. It is as if a researcher were trying to answer a problem on wall sound insulation by focusing on the floor.

Even though you were comparing slightly different types of speakers for different use cases, I just frickin absolutely LOVE the way you are honest to yourself. You searched on Google Scholar on why people like or dislike stuff. And then concluded that your loyalty and affinity to vintage Japanese audio might be an influence on your decisions. A good skill to have tbh. I learned a few things. Anyway, I have a pair of Technics SB-F1s lying around, which I found from a 40-year-old case in the attic. Contemplating whether to invest in an amplifier or buying some Edifier bookshelf speakers. Bestest Regards!

Inused a pair of MR4s for 8 months and I was very impressed with how detailed they were. To say they lack character is exactly what they are supposed to do, they are monitors! For the money, if you are after monitors, ai think they would be very hard to beat.

You forgot that you are comparing studio monitors with classical speakers. Speakers have a colored sound, hence the ''story''. You probably prefer a sound with character rather than a flat reference sound.

I just watched your year old video. I still have these speakers in my bedroom powered by a small 20+ years old Marantz amp + Sony CD/Mini disc player. I purchased them in 1979 with money from my fist summer job (I was 16). I also purchased a Technics tape deck and receiver that lasted a couple of decades before being worn out (switches, capacitors and a very worn read/write head on the tape deck). One thing you didn't mention is the weight of these little speakers, something that does add to the sound quality as the cases just don't vibrate. The cases of these speakers are made out of die cast aluminium and they weight in at approx 2.2Kg each. (approx as was not going to disconnect them, the scales actually read 2.35Kg). For those still living in the dark ages; that 2.2Kg is 4.85lb or if you prefer 77.6oz.

You don't feel special because you're used to animated speakers that enhance music artificially, like Bose, JBL 🤦🏻‍♂️ If you wanted that why did you purchase reference monitor style speakers, because the whole point of reference monitor style speaker is to represent sound as balanced as possible only concentrating on sound separation and soundstage. And $130 these sound like nothing else on the market, the sound like they are at least $500 worth. YOU SHOULD JUST BUY COLOURFUL SPEAKERS LIKE JBL KEEP THESE SPEAKERS FOR BROKE AUDIOPHILES.

I've got the Edifier MR4 and the R1280DB (using it as TV speakers). Both are similarly specc'd . The MR4 has trs out connectors but no bluetooth. The R1280DB has bluetooth but no trs out connectors. My take? The R1280DB is louder and has better all round sound for listening to music, listening while you're watching UA-cam videos, podcasts. If you're after a budget set of desktop speakers that's what you should get, not the MR4. You'll be disappointed. The MR4 sounds noticeably quiet and more neutral sounding even if you play around with the bass and treble. And I use them for audio recording/mixing and for casual listening. If I I need the audio to be much louder then I switch to my Alto Busker 200W portable PA speaker. I'm in an apartment so those are loud, too loud for my home office/studio in fact. If you're after a very budget set of reference monitors, these will do the job. I'm just a casual/weekend muso so for studio recording/mixing purposes, the MR4 suit my needs. If you're a bit more serious then casual with audio recording/mixing I recommend you spend more to get something better than the MR4.

London Jazz Collector recipe is fantastic... To clean I use the sure-line edging tools ( paint edging tool) and they have thousands of tiny soft mohair filaments that really get into the grooves so much so I use no pressure and the sureline tracks around the record itself. I vacuum that off using one vac utensil I made then do a rinse with distilled water using another sure-line edging tool for that and then a final vacuum and it works great.. And as others have noted I lay the cleaned side down on a different microfibre to that which the uncleaned side sat on.

Due to mr4's woofer size And its power If you keep Mr4's left & right speakers among max 1/2 meters You can enjoy rich sound, If you set left & right speakers wilder than 1 meters, the sound will become wick.

Lovely gear Jamie. I love the old Technics linear trackers…..especially the SL7! I had one not too long ago, it was in beautiful almost mint condition but I sold it to purchase a Rega P3 50th Anniversary turntable. I still kinda miss the SL7 and it’s flawless automation. I wish I had the space to have 2 turntables. Love your channel. Cheers from Scotland 😊

The MR4 is a monitor speaker for recording studios. It was not tuned to perform as a typical home speaker which is rich in bass and lower mids. That is why it sounds "not special". A studio monitor is praised for it's flatness. You basically bought the wrong speaker for your needs. Look up "what makes a good studio monitor". They will probably describe what you are experiencing at home.

    • @OmniZen8118
      @OmniZen8118 3 місяці тому

Actually the speaker with the knob is the Right channel, so she has placed it correctly. "L Speaker Out" on the back of this speaker really means to connect the port indicated here to the other Left speaker using the supplied cable, it does not mean that this itself is the Left speaker. You can easily confirm this by searching for left-right channel stereo test in UA-cam to test the channels on the speakers.
