How do the VAT work on these car auctions? Is the VAT 20% of the final hammer price?

I'm going to defend WBAC here. My car had an unfixable electrical fault that was intermittent. The MOT had run out and wouldn't pass another without a fair bit of work done. In short. I had to off load the car while the electrics still worked. WBAC was the solution. I off loaded the car within hours. Yes. I did get abject Peanuts for it. However. WBAC now have an unsaleable lemon. The joke's on them!

the mark up on what you pay and sell for is insane but literally EVERY business does this - why can't everyone just sell stuff for a reasonable price?

I went with Motorway and got a couple of thousand more for my 3yr old Volvo V40 (had to sell it because the manufacturers warranty ran out then. Lovely car but expensive repair bills. I don't see any on the road now). We Rip You Off Buying Your Car are a con with extra charges too.

They would not buy my car, said it was worthless and even laughed. Sold it privately for £650 pounds.

We took my son's car to We Buy Any Car after being quoted £1800 online. Went to the office and was immediately offered £900...the guy hadn't even got up to look at the car before undercutting the online price by 50%! Shocking.

Great video of rip off company. I've often wondered where do wbac offload their stock to? Do they own retail sites under different names for these vehicles?

Those fees are extortionate

Complete rip off. I took Volvo XC60 in after getting a decent valuation online. Car was only 3 years old, I was only owner and it was in in great condition. Like others I was offered thousands less in person. I asked why? Was told it didn’t have a sunroof and some other extras. My reply of course was, well this was known when the online valuation was done. Guy just shrugged. I’ve warned everyone about them since.

Some of their staff don’t last long if they get their appraisals wrong. I worked for them for two days before I walked for a proper job. You need to detail every little mark otherwise the price they offer is too close to their internet offer. That’s where they make losses and staff have to go.

I’m a guy of retirement age but I wanted to continue working. I had 20 years in franchise dealer sales so I replied to WBAC advertising for a buyer. I was taken on and went to just outside Bristol for “training”. Basically they have trainers who don’t have motor trade experience outside of WBAC. So they start in the company, rise through promotion and then train others. The training is very basic as it has to be when you look at the applicants. You have a pad of forms that you tick boxes depending on what you see. After training you go to a site near where you live. Customers turn up having been given an estimate on the internet. The value you offer after an appraisal is embarrassing for anyone who knows about cars. This is where they score. Their staff , mostly not much more than kids, offer a value to elderly people who are giving up driving, young females with high incomes, people needing to raise some cash, and with no quibbling it’s a deal. Mostly it’s ripping people off and underpaying for what the car is worth. Some people immediately see this and drive away. I worked for them for two days and walked away.

I took my Ford Kuga Vignale to WBAC. It was three years old, in mint condition and they offered me £500 less than online. I told them to stick it and did a part exchange. Online Part exchange offered me £2000 more than I paid for it 18 months ago (during the chip shortage). I exchanged the car at Leeds service station on the A1M. Both parties did an inspection and the deal was done. The buying garage contacted me two days later to let me know the car was even better than the photographs I'd sent, so much for WBAC. The guy who inspects the vehicle earns his commission by knocking down the price offered online! Wouldn't touch them with a barge-pole!!!

Had my car valued at a garage and they offered £15650 as it was as perfect as could be expected for the year. As WBAC had quoted £15850 I booked with them. The rep looked at the car trying to fault it and was struggling. He put into his computer "very small stone chips" and the quote came back at £14200. No chance, absolute rip off merchants

Once went online and got a price, went and saw a monkey in a shed on a supermarket car park and he offered a lower price and a grand less than what a dealer offered !

I had a land which had been repaired following Hailstone damage in France at dealership. It was mint. Valeted not a mark on it. On line quote against when I turned up following inspection, 5k down on line quote. It was 4.5 years old. When challenged could not give me a reason why. Sold it for 6k more on another platform

Sale's people are told to knock off at least 25/30%,, scammers at the end of the day

They are rip.off merchanys. Dropped my octavia quote by over 1k because of a couple of door edge chips

webuyanycar tried mugging me off for my clio i was selling a little while back. little did they know (cos they did not check) the head gasket was about to go [oil in coolant]. they paid me 135 more than what i would have got for scrap. the mugs.

Y experience of Webuyanycar. Last October my 3 yr old VW TROC went up in flames in a fire at Luton Airport. It may relevant the fire on national news. Not knowing much about the motor trade I got advice from a friend who had owned a dealership. He said your first move is to get the lowest and highest price. The firs I went to webuyanycar and got a quote of £15,000. I asked a VW dealership how much an equivalent car would cost on their forecourt. They said £19500. Obviously the car was about to be written off I couldn’t take the car in. I ended up getting £19,000 settlement which I was pleased with. It’s suggested that having cash is an advantage when buying a new car. I don’t, the dealers we interested in having a good car traded in to sell! Every week I received an email offering less than before - it got to £13,700 before I unsubscribed!

I took my 11 year old range rover to "we buy any car" after they estimated the pice on line at £5.700 and when I took it to a small booth at a railway station they reduced the price which they graded at 2 to £4.300, the car had full service history, 5 new tyres, and was in perfect working order with 70+k miles. I refused their offer and sold it the same day to a car trader for £6.100. "We buy any car" is a subsidiary of BCA who are all a bunch of thieving spivs. I was contacted by wbac for feedback on why I didn't use their services and outlined in very fruity superlatives why I wasn't prepared to be grifted / conned by their underhanded methods of trading. You also have to be mindful that they charge a fee from you at £80 for putting your vehicle through their car auction plus another surcharge if you want payment within 14 days. I'm surprised so many very dumb lazy people use them as the best method for selling a car is to Google for reliable / honest car traders and sell your car to them, and they pay you immediately.

As an ex employee of WBAC what you need to remember it's not really WBAC, BCA pull the strings at WBAC as they own it. The system they use is in a sense is fair, as YOU do get the oppotunity to put your damage in on the website when your after a valuation . No dealer will give you what they say on theyre website as they have no idea of the cars condition. WBAC employees are target driven and paid on how good the accuracy of the inspection they was. they have 15mins to buy your car, yet BCA give the car 1hr inspection once they collect it. So the WBAC guys will put more damage on so they ensure they get they're commission..works like this.... Customer Valuation: £500. WBCA inspection value £250. BCA sell for i.e £600. You can see why BCA are worth Millions....

Their very name is a lie. I had a Saab 9-5 with around 200,000 miles on it. Knew it wasn't worth very much, but for a laugh, thought I'd put its registration into their website. I expected a lowball offer of maybe £100. Instead they said they wouldn't buy it due to its age. So they should be done for false advertising, and made to change their name, to put "nearly" before "any". The Saab in question then lasted another 30,000 miles before it failed the MOT and became uneconomic to repair.

They do the same thing here in Australia… they offer you good money online then when u get there they find any reason possible to lower the price down by at least 30% .. plus they keep you waiting for an hour or 2 to try and wear you down.. they say they are trying to find a wholesaler which is all a load of sh!t
