Watching the nice French film "Le Piano Oublie" (2007) by Henri Helman
This French TV movie (2007) is a wonderful film to experience especially for an aspiring piano learner like myself. It features music of Schumann, Bach and Schubert among others. It is also a strong film depicting WW2 aftermath. The film was directed by Henri Helman.

Smart Roses & Stupid Roses

Quintessential Haruki Murakami Story In "Tony Takitani"(2004)

"Tony Takitani"(2004) was directed by Jun Ichikawa based on the short story by Haruki Murakami. Quirky but profound story revolves around the woman who buys her clothes compulsively. Also, there was a jazz record collection to deal with after Tony's father (Jazz Musician) passed away. I surmise this movie was well made using the talent of actors (Rie Miyazawa & Issei Ogata) and Ryuichi Sakamoto...

Japanese Baseball Culture & Me Growing Up There

The Baseball culture in Japan is big. When I was growing up there in 50's, the popularity of baseball was a peak. I had very interesting experience of it as a boy who tried but failed. The Boy And The Kestrel In "Kes" By Ken Loach (1969)

"Kes" is the early film by Ken Loach in 1969. He depicted the typical small coal mining town in England where people's life was tough physically and emotionally. It is almost like a Charles Dickens story in 1800. But this story took place probably in 1950 or 1960. Although it was abusing environments for kids, they didn't have any other choices but adopt the life then. However, one boy establis...

Anjin's Humanity Against Samurai Codes In "Shogun" (2024)
Your review of Keigo Higashino is interesting. I listened to the audiobook versions of Under The Midnight Sun, Silent Parade, and The Miracles of the Namiya General Store. I agree with you that Under The Midnight Sun was uncomfortable in certain places. I noticed that you also have a review of A Man by Keiichiro Hirano. I wish I could read Japanese, because I noticed that he has written a number of other books which have not been translated to English. A few questions - what do you think of Kaoru Takamura, or Kikuko Tsumura or Yoko Ogawa? Also, what are your thoughts on living in Texas? Lastly, what is it like to practice engineering in Japan? It would be nice to have an extended conversation - is there a way I can contact you? Thanks!
Thanks for your general interest in my videos. I only read two yoko ogawa's books which I already reviewed here. Since I read mostly English translations, I don't know much about current authors who are popular in Japan. I don't know the works by Kaoru Takamura, or Kikuko Tsumura. I would like to read more Japanese authors, young or old. Yes, it would be enjoyable if we can talk. Do you do Skype? Or are you interested in e-mail? Please let me know your address of either. Thanks.
One of my goals for 2025 is to learn Japanese! Happy new year!
Happy New Year! Here where I live, it turned out to be a very cold, cloudy and dark new year's day of 2025.
I just finished reading this story and I loved it! Didn't know there is a movie about it, now I want to watch it. I'm looking forward to watching your video on The City and Its Uncertain Wall after I read the book!
I am so happy that you are a Murakami fan.
Thank you for the positive message. Happy New Year to you too. Congratulations on your progress in 2024 and good luck with your resolutions.
Thank you for tuning in. I hope the new year will bring a joy as well. Today, I tried my crossword puzzle again with a little progress. I started to enjoy it a little too. I was talking to my sister who lives in Japan and she is doing "Sudoku". That's my next item to try. Always.
Hello from Mexico! Have been watching your videos for a while now. Love hearing your opinions on art and the plants you show. Just wanted to wish you happy holidays 🥳
Thanks! I am so interested in Mexican wild flowers, trees, and the birds. It is so close to visit but so far in a way that I have never visited. Still hoping someday I will do that. Also, I love to sing my favorite Boleros in Spanish but get frustrated due to my inability speaking and understanding. Yea this is my list as well.
お髭の形を漱石さんと同じになさったら,漱石先生にそっくり⁉️ダンディーでいらっしゃいます。✨ 英訳の日本文学。吾輩は猫である。って、I am a catですか?
👏
It is a great film. I saw it on UK television with English subtitles around about 1988 say. I am trying to find a copy I can watch again on UA-cam or something.
My memory of seeing the newspaper art section introducing Gérard Depardieu, especially in this film and "Danton" still remains strong. In this film, the first time of his wife seeing Martin coming home was unforgettable. Also as a audience, I did not know he was true or not. So the whole movie was full suspense. Let's watch it again.
loved your analysys of the book!!
So good. Though i cant go anywhere right now, this reminded me of my once dream of adventure. I hope someday i can gather courage.
I love your UA-cam videos. I always take time out of my day to try to watch them.😊

Thank you for sharing.
Thank you. I appreciate your input. I finished Kokomo and loved it so much. I will read more ❤
Yeah, conformity can unpleasant. If you feel uncomfortable somewhere, rather than stay put and try to force yourself to cope, it may make more sense to leave. It's a tactic I have used sometimes with pretty good results so far 💪💪
Thank You.
I understand there is a lot of pressure on Peolpe in Japan, from what I've heard. When I was in Jr High school my best friend & his friend gave me a booklet, 'How to be a Non-Conformist'. Laughable. I bet they're molded more by society than I've been since then & don't even realize. I've always been appalled at what I term; 'sheeple'. Scarey.
I really think if you are in it, you don't know you are pressured to conform. It took me 50 years to finally understood that I was suffering due to that. Japan has a difficult task to deal with. Rules and regulations are good in one aspect, but if people started to suffer to the point of no return, they have to reform from inside. Thank you for listening to me, mumbling.
@expatkaz742 I heard about it because my friend's son was residing there, married a Japanese woman & had a job teaching, maybe English? Being from the US, he definitely noticed the difference. That was 20yrs ago. No, most people do not realize how society influences & shapes even their thoughts, though they feel they're thinking for themselves. The rarest artist is the 'artist of life'.
This was beautiful. I get panic attacks from being around a large group of people so I finally quit going to big functions. I too am happier. Thank you for letting people in. If we listen to other's we can learn so much. God bless you.
Thank you for letting me know I am not the only one. Now I understand one of the reasons that people prefer solitude to gathering. People maintain integrity of self that way.
Hi Kaz, I really enjoyed this discussion! I personally enjoyed this film - I like that it challenges the audience to question why society values what it does and why we consider some things taboo. It's an interesting idea to have a protagonist who is completly unaware of the many social restrictions we impose on ourselves and others and have her try to eek out some logic from them (even when there seems to be no real reason why we uphold some of these norms other than 'we've always done it this way'). I wonder if you had difficulty with this film bc the protagonist is less a person but more a tool for the filmmaker to discuss societies values? Because you wanted a more personal story? Anyway, I'm quite relieved to hear that people older than myself also worry about becoming too set in their ways. I worry too that as I get older that perhaps Im becoming less curious and turn more often to old familiar books and films. Great to hear you're still challenging yourself with art, I hope I continue to do so too! I recently saw a film called 'My Favourite Cake' that I think you would really enjoy. It's very different from this one hahaha
Thank you for your comments. I saw this film right after Hayao Miyazaki's "The boy and the heron" and noticed how different the movies can be. Choosing new books to read is also a challenge for me. Even the best seller books, I wished I had not read for some. I want to find out 'My Favourite Cake'. I will let you know.
thanks for the perspective. interesting to hear the conformity issue in japan dating further back
Love your work!
Thank you for sharing your perspective. I finished watching the series a few days ago and it's interesting to hear your point of view. I agree that the character of Lord Toranaga is very restrained in showing his emotions so he may appear to lack humanity. On the other hand, while many of those around him want war, he successfully plots to avoid war and many deaths. He does not give in to impulses. In the end though, he wants power for himself and he uses others for his own benefit, in particular Mariko-sama. While I understand that he can be repulsive, I thought that he is a much more interesting character than the anjin who is rather predictable.
Benji, thank you for watching "Shogun" for 15 hours through. I was hoping the shorter series due to, I think, my age. I was exhausted at the end. Toranaga to me was an enigma that I was not sure if I liked him or not. I really liked the scene that He was coughing while riding his horse. His vulnerability and strength were in that single scene. As a movie though, I wish it had less Harakiri (too explicit) depictions but more suggestive pannings. I had not prepared for it when I innocently started to watch. Or I was assuming that would be like the Japanese samurai films of 60's, like "Harakiri" and "47 ronins" which were definitely suggestive. I really enjoyed their fresh perspectives of Toranaga and other intense characters depicted. I did not like Asano Tadanobu's character much though. He did not fit in to the entire entourages' intensity.
😄😄
ovie sucked. A hot mess of incoherent narrative.
Hi Kaz! I really liked your analysis. I also enjoyed that Galileo and the boy developed a friendship, I think it humanized Galileo a bit. Do you think after the story ends that Narumi went to visit her real father before he died?
Yes, Narumi is such a nice girl and I would like her to have a warm moment with her father. I'd like to see the Japanese film based on this.
Perhaps something new for you: If you watch it again pay attention to how many times the sound of bells is heard or the wind blows. They are metaphors which reoccur throughout the film. [EDIT] Another film you might like is _The Red Violin_ . If you watch it 100 times you will find something new each time. Beautiful movie!!!
Yes, certainly I will pay attentions to the bell next time. I have not watched The Red Violin yet though the name is familiar. I will look for it. Thanks.
Great review. Interestingly enough, I listened to the audiobook of this book and thought it was great. I can see how reading it could be more difficult/draining. Kaga does seem to be a great detective though. And keigo higashino is a brilliant author, from what I have read so far
It maybe oxymoron to look for more peaceful contents in a suspenseful crime story. But somehow I look for those moments in reading. For example, "Sommer Equation" has that quality. Anyway, Higashino's stories vary from one to the other and so are the tastes from the readers, I guess. I hope he writes more.
I know Im kinda late since this was posted 3 months ago but thanks for the video sir❤ I ve started reading it this summer but dropped it; However watching your video made me realize the amazing book I am missing on! keep it up🫶

Hello, I am from the city of Glasgow on the west coast of Scotland. Loch Lomond is not far from here and very beautiful. I found your rendition of Loch Lomond very poignant; thank you. Please, as a Scot, may I ask you to please, when you sing it, use the word 'tak' it's proper Scots to tak the high road and tak the low road. Also we have the British Isles compromising of Scotland, England and Wales... When we include Northern Ireland it is referred to as the United Kingdom. Southern Ireland however is not part of Britain at all but stands as a country in its own right. I would encourage you to listen to The Corrie's rendition of The wild mountain thyme. They also sing of another beautiful part of Scotland; Glencoe. A very sad part of our history. An Irish song "The Mountains of Mourne" is also worth listening to. I enjoyed your video. There are many lovely Irish Scots and Welsh songs and many of Robert Burn's poems which have been put to music e.g "Auld lang Syne" which as you know is sung worldwide at Hogmanay (New Year) Happy hunting and thank you.
Thank you for your response. GB, United Kingdom, England, etc., are all very confusing to me. Especially some folk songs are attributed to both as Irish and Scottish folk song like "Go Lassie Go". "Auld lang Syne" is used as a send-off song for graduating class from junior high or high school students in Japan. We all learned the song in Japanese therefore we thought it is a Japanese song. As a folk song fan, your English, Scottish, Irish and whales songs are fascinating and beautiful. I will be continuously discovering the folk songs from your land.
It's confusing for us too. So much combined history, still going on too. Keep enjoying your folk songs and thank you for replying. All the best.
I found your channel after reading A Month In The County (I wanted to hear reviews from other readers). Your videos offer honest and fearless personal opinions that are quite refreshing. We need more Kaz on UA-cam. 😊
unrelated to the video but i'm really excited to hear your thoughts on Murakami's new novel since that you can read Japanese and it's not yet out in English
I decided to read it in English since my local library will have it in November. Otherwise I have to purchase the book in Japanese which I could do, I suppose. I tried to get the japanese copy from the library loan which I am sure they have it. But my local library is not willing to do so. Yea, I tried very hard to get a Japanese copy but failed.
❤🎉❤👍
Great analysis. I have to say my favorite character in the series is Tadanobu Asano’s Kashigi Yabushige.
Tadanobu Asano has been one of my favorite Japanese actors for sometime. He got pudgy and older a little in this one. Although just finishing 3rd episodes, my eyes go to him whenever he is in the scene. He seems to be somewhat mysterious that I can't figure his Yabushige character out yet.
@@expatkaz742 He’s a fantastic actor. He steals every scene he’s in. I first saw him in Ishi The Killer and I’ve really enjoyed watching his work ever since.
@@karmasauce6288 Because of his good looks and natural acting, he was memorable in every movie he was in. Even his supporting role, like in "The Face Of Jizo", was so effective that I could not forget.

I love Sukiyaki song so much! It made me smile and sad in same time. I sing it often...in my bad quality Japanese 😊
Amazing thing was that people in America liked it without understanding the meaning of the song. I think the melody and the voice quality of Kyu Sakamoto conveyed enough to express this melancholy feeling of a young boy.
@@expatkaz742i am not American, i am Polish/Norwegian. But i love Japan and this song is absolutely lovely to me. It shows the heart of Japanese people. It brings tears to my eyes. And a smile. It is my favourite song.
@@smillabutryn7517 Wow, the song was a big hit in Japan. I thought the charming Kyu Sakamoto's melancholy voice helped but really its lyrics could affected Japanese people's mind. So, outside of Japan, I still wonder what attracted to this song. That's why I think the music is a international language.

I stop for native plant seeds from flowers I see growing along my country road. I figure, I am one of the creatures aiding in their dispersal. I thought I had poison ivy cleared from my land. Now tiny plants emerged this year again. I may have the birds to thank for the poison ivy reappearing.
Yes nature is strong and thriving without your doing anything. I am doing cutting propagation now. It is amazing they are so adaptable and grow from a twig cutting.

Very hard to understand what you are saying. While you are walking the mic is rubbing against your shirt and drowning out your voice.
sorry, I should consider getting a better microphone. This is the Gopro 7 and depending the wind and my face direction to the camera, the audio is not good. I also thinking of getting better camera as well. Meantime, I will be careful. Thanks for your input.
