Massive Roof Leak- Every Roofing Company Ghosted Me!
I walked into my garage last week and encountered a huge pool of water on the floor. I was in shock, I had this fixed 5 years ago by a roofing company. I had visions of the newly drywalled ceilings and walls in the garage being destroyed. I was in immediate panic mode to get another company in here fast, and sort it out before the next rain. But not a single one would. This is my story.

Turn a Boring Wall Into a Feature Wall in 7 Minutes [Timelapse]

I had a large empty wall just begging for improvement at the top of my stairs. I had recently completed a small bathroom niche ( ua-cam.com/video/rg51RT0EkxQ/v-deo.html ) and ended up loving it. So, the obvious answer was to create a newer, bigger, better niche in this empty wall! (obviously!) To be very clear, I have a single previous experience building a wall niche (link in previous paragrap...
Tiling a Small Bathroom - Laminate Floor Water Damage Repair
Переглядів 6194 місяці тому
Installing laminate in a bathroom seemed risky at the time, and we paid the price. So as part of the repair process we waterproofed the floor and installed hexagon porcelain tile. It turned out great! To avoid a repeat of this, I ripped out the section of most trafficked floorspace from the bathroom, installed plenty of blocking to minimize flex/deflection in the floor, replaced that section wi...

Basement Floor Leveling - Don't Do It This Way

5 years after purchasing this 1986 home, I finally got around to revisiting the basement flooring. I had thrown down some loose-lay vinyl after we moved in, but wanted something nicer, and warmer. After some work with my laser, to my horror... the floor was a mess of rolling hills. I couldn't raise the entire space with self leveler, as I would submerge the basement bathroom (and it would cost ...

Installing Laminate Throughout - Removing Popcorn Ceilings - On The Cheap

Bringing this 1977 house into the present on a budget. I removed all previous flooring, gutted the main floor bathroom, and stripped the popcorn off the ceiling. $4000 Tub to Shower Conversion

I was asked to tear out a tub and replace it with a shower at my parent's home. I haven't done this before, but of course I have my UA-cam assistant, so what could possibly go wrong?? Total cost for the shower pan, tile, glass doors, and a ton of little things was around $4000 CAD. The drain plumbing was as expected 1 1/2" as a tub was there. Installed My Own Livingroom Window - Saved $2400

Fixing My Yard Drainage - The Neighbor Is Flooding Me
Переглядів 3,3 тис.2 роки тому
My neighbor is uphill from me, thus I get ALL his water. Water would come from his property and pool right against my foundation. Then I re-plumbed the discharge from the floor drain (no longer code here) and sent it downhill...
Paver Walkway Installation - Tiled Porch and Black Slate

Wow, before watching this video this was a bit intimidating. Thank you for making it simple for us diyers. So neat and cleanly done.
Oh it was intimidating haha, but wasn't nearly as scary as I thought it would be. Went slow and took my time :)
I have discovered my dream adventure! Amazing!
production value alone for a DIY video alone deserves a thunbs up. killer intro👍
@@Harry-Har I try my best 😆
What an awesome tutorial thanks for sharing your hard work 👍
Beautiful job! That square outlet, I can see how this is the most stressfull part of the work. You pretty much have to trust that the amount of tape and turn count is exactly right. And on top of that when you`re at your last turn you need to properly evaluate if it can do a full rotation or will it get stuck and you need to go back to the last straight position. And that tape doesnt like turn backs too much. Surprisingly the tiling is the easiest part of this job :)
That's exactly what went through my head causing stress for days leading up to doing it 😂😂
Great job. Given how much the average contractor is charging for something like this in Canada and still screwing it up royally, I am glad that some are doing this themselves. Keep up the good work eh! :-)
Very much appreciated!!
We have a basement floor with similar issues. We were thinking of grinding down the really high points and self-leveling it, but like you we have some extreme low spots which will be too costly. We may have to use your method. It's nice to know someone else has gone before us and had good results.
It's a mixed bag. It was a lot of work, and ultimately not a perfect outcome. Definitely a better-than-before outcome though. The floor was just so out of level this was the best I could come up with without raising the entire basement floor at extraordinary expense. So after having used that room for half a year now, there are a couple spots with a little bounce. Not terrible, but noticeable. So I resorted to drilling small holes and injecting Big Stretch caulking to support a couple of the worst areas. This helped. If I had to do it again... I'm not certain. I would probably live with the small deficiencies that resulted from the way I did it rather than sink thousands into raising the entire floor and having to redo the bathroom floor which would have been submerged. Hope this info helps 😉
Absolutely gorgeous! I’m having mine done…..just getting quotes! Come do mine…..you’re amazing!!! Turned out perfect!!

Can use 2 screwdrivers through drain grate, form and x and just twist. Comes right out. Being said.. no vapor barrier, did not seal backer board or the joints. Simply laid tile on board. Yea saves some material cost but.. not how its done.
So I probably should have elaborated on this more in the video. The backer board is called DensShield. They specifically tell you not to put a vapor barrier, because the board is waterproof, and becomes the vapor barrier. Also, all the joints were sealed with polyurethane caulking following the installation instructions of the DensShield exactly. I know it looks like a different installation than typical backer board, but I followed the instructions to the letter. 🙂
Curious why the first orange T went over the corrugated pipe instead of inside it? I feel like the water would just leak out of the sides of it and go straight down to the foundation? 🤔
Oh yeah it's definitely not a 100% watertight system. Some leeching into the soil is fine. It's basically just to account for very heavy rain days. Couple years later I still haven't seen any water in the basement. It's working super well 😁
@@tokyosteve1223 Awesome man I'm glad to hear that it's working well, I'm probably going to try something similar to this. But you know what they say... Owning a house is a constant battle with water...and you're probably not going to win 😅😂 But at least we can slow it down a little bit lol
Man I just did a tub to shower conversion for 19k and it was not done all that great either. Total nightmare. You did a super job.
Much appreciated!
Glass door vs. shower curtain - which best!
Thank you so much for your time to make the vid. You inspire me to do same. My washroom is exactly same as yours. Just wondering, which brand of shower pan did you used? Is 32x60? thanks
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. The pan was a Sterling (and made of vikrell). And I do believe it was 32x60.
I’m a professional contractor. I could have saved you the effort and done that repair for $2000 plus materials! 🤦♂️
Oh @PattyOhLantern you silly man. Clearly you're not a roofer if you're offering to do the repair 😂😋
Well done. Great job. Time to advertise your skills and make big money.
Hahaha maybe not quite yet. Customer's might not appreciate the "Hmm.. wonder what I do next? " Comments mid job 😄
So how much was in materials. Screws,ABS pipe, glue, shower kit, tile, bullnose, grout, mud, tape, etc?????????
It was $4000 CAD ($3000 USD) for the materials. For everything. There was no labor cost other than my time. And I suppose costs are relevant to location, and this was in south eastern Ontario, Canada.
Doing this exact job currently, turning into a nightmare. Unfortunately, my rough opening turns out to be non standard in size for any size pre-hung. Best I could find is a door that is 30x80 (matches original) with a right hand inswing. But the modern prehungs need a RO opening of at least 82.5 tall and 32.5 wide, anything smaller is way off and impossible to shim, plus the door would be absurdly narrow. I'm debating to if I should plain the jamb or the RO? Really sort of blows. Not to mention the door was a special order and I have to wait weeks for it to arrive, not even knowing if it will fit. I really think the original jamb was a custom jamb to fit this opening.
Like many a job, something seemingly simple escalates to complicated and potentially lots more work than expected. Been there! You could pull some drywall off and see if there's anything in the way of reframing the RO to the size you want, then fix the drywall up. See how one job becomes two.. or three jobs 😂🤦 Good luck
The bar not going all the way across the top of the shower door really bugs me, but other than that, nice work!
I just wander where did you buy the glass door for the opening.Nice job

Take yrs to learn how to tile
In the age of UA-cam, that can be drastically shortened 😁
What a moisture magnet. Always cover the cement board with an elastomeric sealer before tiling. 😢
It's not cement board, it's DensShield. One side is waterproof. 👍
Ok other wise great job.
Much appreciated!
I hate to tell you this. You should have hired a plumber. All shower drains have to be 2”. You left the undersized 1-1/2” drain in. That’s plumbing code 101.
Yep, I knew it. The house was built with 1 1/2, and it stayed 1 1/2. Never had a problem, never will be a problem with a single showerhead. 😉
Which mortar for the wall tiles?
I used Mapei "Large Tile & Stone Mortar" from Lowe's. But since then I've used Mapei Ultraflex LFT and much much prefer it. I used it on my own shower and will use it again.
@tokyosteve1223 it holds 12x24 tiles good?
@@GoodBoy-qf5ui it had great grip. Very minimal slippage on the wall.
@@tokyosteve1223 so the ultraflex left is better
What is the name of the company you purchased the shower doors and hardware from?
www.bathdepot.com
Shouldn't you have vapor barrier between the rock wool and the sheeting?
Actually, the backer board becomes the vapor barrier (according to Georgia Pacific - makers of the DensShield board). They specifically said to not use a vapor barrier. 🤷
great video- what is the Hight of the lintel?
Thanks much appreciated. I don't recall exactly but I seem to recall my reasoning worked something like... Next full mortar line in the brick above the top of where the door would be. I wanted it as close to the door as I could get it because it was going to need to be trimmed from the lintel down to the top of the door and I didn't want a 6" piece of wood to fill the gap above the door. Hope that made sense.
What a great video! Your honesty and apprehension but outstanding final product are enough to convince me that I can do this as well. A sincere thank you.
Very glad you enjoyed it 😊
How did you start dlng renos? I wish i had thr skillset to do my own reno work. I would save a ton of cash
I was motivated by the ridiculous prices and low quality of renovations being offered by local contractors. I started knowing absolutely nothing. I watched a ton of UA-cam and sweated the details. I get great enjoyment from solving problems, this was just something else that needed solving 🙂
Well it took you longer than the guy who.does this regularly. But you trued up the floor , saved cash and finished. Job well done id say.
There were actual moments I doubted it would get done successfully 😅
People truly do not understand the work that goes into this mostly because of the hack videos that do not show the majority of the work or do terrible work unlike this video that gives a great representation of what is needed. People also do not understand this is not an EXACT science because many things can change depending on many different factors as you can tell from the video. You have to be able to work it and think on your toes which only comes with experience.
Much appreciated and yes, it was a lot of work 😂
Wow good job we are thinking to remove our bathtub but we are afraid of doing it we have zero experience and we doing how to plumbing. Is it okay to hire someone who can do plumbing after we removed the bathtub or this is not allowed in terms of safety?
I'm really not sure if anyone is actually required to hire a plumber for just simple connections like attaching a shower base, I didn't even look into it (whoops 😬). I didn't/don't know anything about plumbing either, but a P-trap attached to a shower base attached to the existing waste pipe appeared (as you could see in the video) to be not complicated whatsoever. My vote is go for it (carefully) 🙂
Very Good job.
Much appreciated!

Man, you did a great job 👏
so about $5000 in labor to pay someone else it seems
$4000 CAD in materials for a DIY job.
I would not recommend hammering away on tiles without safety goggles.
What a fantastic job. Late to comment, but glad to see you also added silicone to the screwed holes. Self doubt is really annoying, it's amazing what you achieved.
Where did your fan vent to?
Out the side of the attic roof. It was too cramped and dicey up there to film any of it.
lungs of steel
Instead of looking at the laser you could have ran a string line across your room. The subfloor does not have to be level for flooring but flat. If it has a slope that is ok as long as it is flat.
You're gonna need another house... for those diamond-incrusted platinum nuts, you got for one attempting that and two posting unconventional solutions on the internet...
Yep, no idea what that means 😂
Ha! I get what the guys saying. Love it
Where is the waterproofing between the board and the tiles? I am no expert.
The backer board is called DensShield. One side has a waterproof coating. You caulk between the boards. Waterproofed. I followed the instructions to the letter. 😉
Great job! I’m about to try leveling myself. I’m so scared but the space is less than half yours. And mines on plywood. Wish me luck 🎉
Oh man. I do wish you luck! I hope the floor you're beginning with is more level than the rolling hills of my basement 😂
We he make out with the wood floor? I had to level a floor in.an old century home that was out 4 inches. All I had to do was remove the wood floor, sister in new beams and put down new plywood floor. Sure that's easier than concrete.
That’s $4000 usd? I am confused what was so expensive about this
$4000 CAD (I'm in Canada). The price wasn't meant to indicate it was cheap or expensive, just what it cost me in materials.
@@tokyosteve1223 understood. I meant I was confused that it could be so expensive. Must be the glass door? The tile and fixtures I recently purchased came out to only $1400 usd. No glass yet though.
@@newbtuber333 Well, a few things at play here. $4000 CAD is only $2900 USD. The door itself was $1000 + tax.. but just in general we pay far higher prices in Canada for basically everything. It is what it is 🤷. We're kind of numb to it haha
Very very impressive work! Looks great!
All that and no shot of it working 😢

When they refer to left and right hand in and out swing doors, do they go by the inside of the house or from inside of the garage?
