    only a compete idiot, would have drilled the holes in the car, then put on the bracket then drill the holes from underneath. you drill you holes in the panel, set it on the car then spot weld it, nobody except a no nothing would drill a hole all the way through to spot weld.

      Yeah on the passenger side I did. The area between the door and wheel well, I had to cut and shrink the area to fit it right. It's still not 100% but filler and paint, will make it what it ain't

      Odd.. The two things that would not make the quarter go back is wheel well placement and the door striker support thing. Is the quarter up against the door support? Also I had to hammer flat where the wheel well meets the quarter. It was a top open of an angle to allow the quarter to move around also

    Where did you purchase the cowls. I got R/s from Muscle car central (AMD)and needed to split and pull apart upper inside corner and patch and weld. D/s i got from American performance (Ebay) aka Taiwan absolute junk., Is there anything made in America anymore?

    • @thedrunkenturbo

      Morning John! I got them from NPD. For the most part, they fit pretty decently. Other than some screwing around at the top. Just to make the outer cowl fit better. Yeah seriously. Most of these aftermarket parts are made in Taiwan. Just wr pay more for whomever gets the top pick of the batch. Even most of of the AMD panels I put on the car needed some fussing with. Don't get me started on my hood and RS nose stuff. 😕

    I have a question for you and need some information on how you did this so I’m test fitting my quarter panel turning a 78 Camaro into a 70-73 with the 70-73 window and I’m having issues with the quarter panel not fully touching the outer wheelhouse and even when I get the lower part of the quarter panel lined up with the rocket panel just like the factory did it I can’t seem to get the rest of the quarter panel to line up with the wheelhouse better but everything fits good by the trunk drop off until I get to the area by the door jam and the rocker panel and that’s where it doesn’t fit good and I heard other people having the same issue and I wanted to see what did you do.

    • @thedrunkenturbo
      @thedrunkenturbo 9 місяців тому

      Hey! Sorry took me a few to get back to ya. Got sidetracked yesterday with work stuff Is it a stock wheel house or did you replace it? I did have a bit of massaging in that area, ended up slitting the flange where in a few spots to fit the curve. Along with a bunch of clamps to pull it in.

      @@thedrunkenturbo Hey no problem at all thanks for getting back with me and yes I did replace the wheelhouse I bought all amd sheet metal and i was thinking the same thing, I’m gonna get some 9 inch locking welding clamps with some paint sticks and try that and if that doesn’t work I’ll try your method so did you cut the wheelhouse flange or the quarter panel flange?

    • @thedrunkenturbo
      @thedrunkenturbo 9 місяців тому

      Quarter panel flange. Made it fit the outer wheel house. Also, if the wheel house isn't all the way installed yet. The flange that goes to the inner structure,.I had to hammer/dolly that flatter and bring it in some. That helped a lot also

    • @shawnchaney4656
      @shawnchaney4656 9 місяців тому

      @@thedrunkenturbo Ok but yes I already welded in the outer wheelhouse to the inner structure and the rocker panel and so I’ll try what you said because I can feel where the quarter panel is super tight almost like it’s rubbing the outer wheelhouse.

    • @thedrunkenturbo
      @thedrunkenturbo 9 місяців тому

      And now that I've had more caffeine in me. Also remembered that I hammer dollyed the flange where the quarter meets the wheel house up a good bit. Since the angle wasn't really 90⁰ on the wheel house. That helped a lot there also.

So I had one big order and shipping costs were factored in. Shipping from say , classic industries was pretty high just for the parts I got (something like 500 dollars vs 350 for a pallet of parts from AMD So yeah. Shipping costs were the major factor going with AMD

    I’m always glad to see guys replacing the entire panel rather than cut it along the body line and that’s twice the work for what? Saving a couple feet of original metal? There’s very few people who can do it successfully without major warping and using a lot of filler to correct it. I do a lot of side work and there’s a lot of shops trying to hire metal guys like myself because “ we’re a dying breed “. With every panel you do you get so much better at finding ways to make them fit and get faster. A guy can make 2-6k extra a month from his garage by doing quarters and floor panel replacement. We need to keep these cars on the road! Love your work keep it up buddy you have my support

  • @ChrisJohnson-jw5mn

    On most of your aftermarket parts on the floor pans mostly did you line up the seams because I have brand new floor brand new truck brand new rockers renew enter rockers brand new outside we’ll housing even have the roof cut off of course I braced it real well And the original ones had a little difference where they lined up So I was gonna whine whine up almost perfect together the bottom lip where the outer rocker and floor meat together

      @@thedrunkenturbo It is the flange or lip that is on the floor and on the rocker panel where they meet and you welded together I didn’t know if they were flush my original had an 1/8th to a quarter difference they weren’t exactly lined up where you weld them together

    • @thedrunkenturbo
      @thedrunkenturbo Рік тому

      Ahhhhhh gotcha. End of the rockers lined up for the most part. As for the floor pan lining up there. Dunno. I knew that area of the floor was going to be cut for the DSE frame rail mods. Also it was pretty rusted there when I cut the car a part. So I didn't have much visual reference to go by.

      @thedrunkenturbo Рік тому

      Hey That's pretty much what I did. Then used some ratchet straps from inside the trunk, out the tail light hole, latched onto the frame rail. Which held the tail panel in place. Took a few tries to trim that edge down to get it to sit right. Also, I did use the sharp flat edge of a body hammer to make the AMD quarter more towards a 90* angle than what they stamped

  • @hansp47d
    @hansp47d Рік тому

    I have a question please: when removing quarter panels my resto book suggests that in order to preserve the normal frame stress loading it is imperative that the car sits on four wheels. If one wouldn’t do that, remove and fit panels, get the car on wheels again, distortion and panel buckling will occur. Since I have been watching your demos I’m now confident in removing the trunk pan also. Your thoughts please and thanks very much again!👍

    • @thedrunkenturbo
      @thedrunkenturbo Рік тому

      That book is one way to do it, actual frame table is another, check out Paradise Bay Customs. youtube.com/@ParadiseBayCustoms He does a full on frame jig and rotisseries for his car. Or Vynil Village Garage. youtube.com/@VinylVillageGarage He did something similar to what I did with just a rear frame rail jig. Yeah sure the book works for body shop guys. But apparently there is more than one way to do things. 4 jack stands, some ratchet straps and taking good reference measurements, before cutting the car up, goes a long way. Thanks for enjoying my journey on the car!

      By the way did you remove the frame as well? I’m inclined to remove that also to make sure all rust is removed but I’m hesitant as it seems like serious surgery. I know, there’s a first time for everything and one has to muster a bit of courage ofcourse too. However the more I watch various ‘how to’ sessions the better I feel bout stuff. Btw I’m an aircraft maintenance engineer and welder by trade also, so plenty handskills n tools at hand. Just keen to pick other’s brains n tips. You’re helping great. A minor comment is that the camera moves around too quick at times lol😄

      Yep both frame rails were completely cut out. Ha. If ya watch some of my videos closely. You'll see out of all the car shit on the walls, you'll see one aircraft poster . I used to help build that aircraft (and other configurations of said aircraft). Before I made the jump.over to the NDI world of RT/UT. Cutting the car apart, wasn't much different than that. Jig, fixturing, good measurements etc goes along way Haha yeah I've been told.a few times I move to fast, camera shakes, etc. Damn ADHD.

    Hi there mate, your clips are great and very motivating, so thanks for that. I’m in the process of replacing both quarters on my 72 Camaro and the more I cut out the more comes to light. My first question is how did you remove the outer wheel house? Are they spot welded in? When I look at mine it looks like an arched continuous weld. Can you please explain? Thank you

    • @thedrunkenturbo
      @thedrunkenturbo Рік тому

      Hey! Sounds like we're in the same boat. More I dug into the car more was rusted/wrong. Anyways video 24 about 16 min explains what you are asking. ua-cam.com/video/sjKjBC6pCqs/v-deo.html It's not really a "continuous" weld, persay, but a bunch of small 0.125" spot welds. I cut most of the wheel well out, then went back with the edge of a cut off disk, and ground down the middle of the weld area. Came back and chisled off the rest. Hope that helps ya!
