    I'm just starting out. So, I have no experience with street photography and the range of reactions it can generate or how to respond accordingly. Do I no longer have to worry? Will the reflection removal tool completely change the game of street photography by being able to use store windows to cerepitously take photos of people? Will street photographers start hanging out around display windows seemingly taking product or mannequin pictures? Frankly, I hope this feature finds its way into GIMP or darktable soon. I am now very eager to go out and start shooting.

      @@CharlesCooper-o7ithe ability to remove reflections in such an easy and quick way makes it a very powerful tool in postproduction. BUT Photographers have been using polarizing filters forever to battle reflections at the shooting stage. So if you forgot your filter and have to fix it in the edit then this new tool is great - as long as you work in jpg. For the time being at least.

      In some of my street photography I purposely want the reflection in the window for the effect. So as long as I have that option I guess I'm okay with it. I'm more of a realist and try to keep my photos as much the same as I see it with my eyes.

      @@CameraShake a couple of things. At 76, the change is a rather steep learning curve. I miss Bridge but think I can adapt to the Affinity "batch process" theme. I am also picking up Affinity Designer as I will use it in 'pixel" mode to create flyer, small posters and Amazon KDP photo books. As we are a not for profit, it looks like Canva will offer us nearly unlimited licenses for fee. This means I can have free lance and volunteer staff use them . A lot of people have better design skills than I have. So far, this is looking pretty good to a nold socialist working in community development in an urban environment.

    I've nothing against PhotoShop. In the case of AI, it's also fine. I don't think it's much different from changing settings in camera for the most part. I also think PhotoShop offers the photographer a lot of additional creativity outside of what can be done in camera. If you can get the results you want, these tools are fine to use. I will state that I did start out with film. And moving to digital has been a godsend over film. Film does train you to make better decisions behind the camera. But digital offers you a lot of post processing that is a lot simpler than what you'd have to in a darkroom. In most cases, I think the processing in LightRoom is sufficient for what I do, but PhotoShop has it's benefits.

    • @CameraShake
      @CameraShake 4 дні тому

      @@nerdynautilus5373 on the flipside, modern mirrorless cameras are now so good, precise and accurate and produce raw files that are so clean that we as photographers have the ability to imprint our own vision and character onto them. Look at it as a unique opportunity to make your photos your own and give them your own unique touch of personality. That way, you won’t be enslaved to what camera manufacturers want your images to look like but you can create something that’s uniquely yourself.

      Sony gear is gear, not sure what you mean by 'character'. If your Sony gear gives you images you love, who cares what 'people say'. If you are talking about the body design aesthetics, that's purely a personal preference sort of thing. I don't use Sony and think their bodies are pretty bland design wise (a lot of the models look like black cigar boxes with grips glued on) -- but that is just my personal opinion, and shouldn't make you feel insecure. I shoot OM System cameras and think they look great, but I also think Fuji makes some really good looking cameras. I hope this didn't make you feel more insecure. 🙂

    Main point that Gavin raises is that many/most of us are doing this just for fun. Me anyway. Which continues to make we wonder over the last five years: if so many of us are doing this mainly for fun, and almost everyone carries around a phone with a camera on it these days, how does anyone make a decent living taking pictures anymore? Maybe just a very few lucky ones. I assume most of Gavin's income derives, not from providing pictures to clients, but from teaching, making UA-cam tutorials for Adorama, and workshops. Like playing the guitar: Lots of fun for many people who just enjoy singing and playing, but Eric Claptons are as rare as comets.

    • @TheOlandex

      I agree and have had the same thoughts. I actually do work as a photographer on a part-time basis, which happened not because I wanted to turn it into a business (as sooo many people want to do these days it seems), but because I've been involved with photography for many years and the opportunities just came along. But the notion that I could give up my day job to do photography full-time and make a decent living at it is highly unlikely at best. A grad shoot here, a family there, an event once in a while - they all pay and cover off my costs like Photoshop subscription and some of the equipment acquisition, but to do it at a level that really pays is reserved for the select few. As you say, many photographers these days make their money teaching on various platforms like UA-cam.

    On this occasion I would respectfully have to disagree with Frank. If you meter from the back of the subjects head and say get f8, what it your subject moves more towards the camera, with this method you would then have to increase the power of your lights - and yet the camera is in the same position and thus receiving even more light into the lens when the distance from camera to background hasn't changed! Meter for correct exposure then add 2/10th of a stop, or just use blinkies until the background just exceeds correct exposure. Measuring form background to subject is a recipe for disaster.

    • @David0Perez0
      @David0Perez0 5 днів тому

      I would say it depends. I just finished a work in which I had to expose 2 steps under the background to neck meter because the client was not happy with how the hair came out (over exposed on the edge)

    • @FrankDoorhof
      @FrankDoorhof 5 днів тому

      Hi, Let me explain the techinique slightly differently I use a reflective meter on a white background and meter around the edges of the head. The reflective meter will always give you a value of 18% gray, and as long as you know when your camera is clipping (in most cases with modern cameras this is opening 3 stops from 18% gray) you can just open for example those 3 stops and the background will be perfect white. There are also methods that use several readings with an incident meter, this can work with a proper white background, the problem is that an incident meter doesn't take into account the background. So if the background is 100% white it works, if it's dirty you are out of luck so to say. With the reflective meter you always get the same result on polar white, greek white and all other kinds of white backgrounds. And the trick also works on for example light gray backdrops, it works fast and accurate. The reason I advise to meter close to the head is because modern cameras have more dynamic range in the top end this also increases the reflection of your backdrop which will give more chance of flair and losing fine detail in the hairs. By metering close to the head it's super easy in Lr to select subject, inverse and bump the whites to create the perfect white backdrop. What a lot of people miss with the explanation is the difference between reflective (always 18% gray) and incident (light hitting the meter, not the background). Hope this explains it better. BTW When moving the subject closer or further away from the backdrop does not change the brightness of the backdrop, only the mainlight on your subject.

    Interesting thoughts, I’d add that higher end (paid) photographers are paid for their original thought, their unique interpretation of a brief or an assignment. Right now AI has no original thought. This could lead to absolutely no business in the middle/lower market because people just use a phone app. Problem is that higher end clients are now reducing their budgets by A LOT. I suspect the only ‘bread and butter’ for photographers trying to earn a living will be live events… weddings/concerts etc…AI can’t touch that. Still life, food, interiors and lower end fashion/e-commerce will all be done with AI… THIS YEAR… sorry but it will, creative budgets are controlled by accountants these days and if they can ‘save money’ they will. AI is ‘good enough’ for them. The law needs to wake up quickly because I don’t want be sold something based on an AI image that is, or could be, misleading. The law should state that you see a real product within advertising, not an AI generated toothbrush/box of cereal/car/pair of shoes etc… Just my thoughts

    Such a wonderful conversation with so many inspiring moments and messages. It's clear from this video that Paul's success as a photographer and the greatness of his work is rooted in his own sensitivity and humanity. Most importantly, in contrast to most of the photography videos on UA-cam that linger at the level of technical things like cameras, lenses, brands and film versus digital, this one left me feeling inspired to make some great work of my own.

    It took me a couple days to watch the whole video but it was well worth coming back to. Great conversation between the two of you.

    Umm... Were there actually any tips, tricks and storytelling here? There was a bit about which lenses you use and don't use and a little mention about lighting, but I don't feel that I learnt anything from this. Maybe it's just me.

    My most recent ambition is to get my worried little face captured by Ivan Weiss. Seen him in a few vids now and I really like hearing how he thinks on things RE the best portrait of YOU. Not the face you know is your best pic. YOU. Helped me in my portrait adventures already! Great vid, subscribed!

    Good conversation and great points. Even hobbyist photographers (like me) are "more than", right? The tech makes it easy but you're 100% correct in that we must evolve along with that very same tech. As an example, it's commonplace (I believe) now that most of us are also experts in the Adobe Ecosystem and the things we're doing today would have required a pro-level skill set 20 years ago. Yet at the same time, I love working with LrC, Ps, Pr, Au etc and totaly see it as a necessity. Again, good conversation -- Cheers.

      Thank you so much, @RustyBrownPhotography! You’re absolutely right-whether hobbyist or professional, photographers today are “more than” just image creators. The tech we have at our fingertips opens up so many possibilities, but it also demands that we keep evolving alongside it. Your point about the Adobe ecosystem is spot on. Tools like LrC, Ps, Pr, and Au have become second nature to many of us, and the skills we’ve gained through them are light-years ahead of where things were 20 years ago. It’s incredible to think about how accessible these tools are now, but also how much they’ve raised the bar for what’s considered a polished result. Thanks for adding such a thoughtful perspective to the conversation. Cheers to continually learning, adapting, and loving the process!
