After hitting 3,000ft I went up past 19th Ave at Stern Grove, although I couldn't see it obviously. There was a very strong headwind coming back. Flight time was only 28 mins. I didn't trust the clouds, so I wasn't planning on staying high for long anyway. Flying a Litespeed RX. New gliders for sale at www.californiahg.com #gopro #fortfunston #hanggliding
Hang glider emergency landing in the middle of a lake

Yesterday's out landing near Funston. With a lot of altitude I flew a couple miles into SF and couldn't make it back to the coast in the headwind. I'm at full speed on a Litespeed RX Ultimate. I was planning on a short flight anyway because the clouds felt like they were going to close under me and bury the whole coastline, which they did a while after I landed. Rare XC Flight! Funston to Half Moon Bay

It was 4 years since I was last able to make the trip past Devil's Slide, and I was thinking I wasn't mentally capable of trying it anymore. Not a long ways by XC standards, but at such low altitude and dangerous around the middle portion with sometimes converging winds that it's exciting. Did you spot all the planes around the airport? Didn't look windy at all to me. The tree branches weren't moving at all. I, personally have landed going slightly backwards twice, wind at 30+ MPH. Also, once I witnessed a lightweight kid flying a glider way too big for him launch in a 30 MPH wind at Dog Mountain, WA. He climbed out going backwards, kept going and disappeared from sight. Never heard how that worked out for him.
Clickbait bollocks!
wonderful video
Amazing flight! Hard to believe you could do that on a hang glider foot launched from Funston. How the heck did you get so high? Would it have been possible to get back to the coastline and fly the bluffs down to Funston? The approach and landing on the golf course was very cool, though. Was that a one-in-a-thousand (million?) kind of day out there?
If I could make it back to the coast on this one then I would have landed at Funston. Too much headwind. Occasionally people get up above the clouds like this. It's just the way the wind layers set up. The really big ones like this are rare. Generally everyone else misses out because they're misinterpreting the conditions, or a few experienced pilots see what's up but don't want to mess with it.

How fast can you go on a hang glider?
Not as fast as a sailplane. Fast enough to penetrate through most wind.
Good times
So you guys got what looks to be a perfect training site, as well as a launch/LZ that looks just right for lots of tandems... Yet I rarely see videos of new pilots or any tandem going on... How come?! Make it grow again :)
Regulations dissuade most everyone from doing tandems or training. But there is some training sometimes.
@@bustedkeel regulations killing the sport then. Is that a law or ushpa problem?
@@delta_yeah I guess it's USHPA + site and government regs.
That was a sphincter tightening way to learn about rotor. Maybe the best way.
The wind ended up being very light at the surface.
Fore! ⛳️ nice drive
Wasn't the Moyes company the first to introduce topless gliders? I've owned two moy's gliders in the past and I really liked them better than the Wills Wing products, but that's just me😅
I don't know who made toplesses first. The older gliders were pretty terrible compared to what we have now.
First time ever doing a pre-flight on an older Falcon 1 everything checked out, but the instructor sent me back to do it again (She already knew what was wrong) ...and I found a dent in the left leading edge mid-way between the nose and crossbar. You really could feel it if you pressed in firmly as you ran your hand along the tube. Maybe the newer Falcons have more layers of mylar, etc.???
I believe the Falcon 1 only had mylar sewn into a couple spots. Newer gliders have full span inserts. If I'm going to check something, I want to know I'm getting a reliable finding. The sail really needs to come off to fully inspect a LE tube. Often I won't fly someone's glider unless I took the sail off it recently to fully check it.
Good to know the right people to do a proper sail repair. I know a guy that works making custom sails for racing boats. His company won't touch glider sails though. They don't want the liability...
I'll take the liability! Haha. I test fly after repairs, so that question gets sorted pretty quick.
How much
You could fly to white castle!
How much do those go for?
A lot. Contact me and we can go over details.

Wow beautiful view! I think I had never seen a video so high at Funston before. Could you possibly consider crossing to the right, over the bay entrance? Those hills look yummy. Was that LZ planned? Or at least did you know you had that option if you couldn't make it back to the beach?
The wind was too strong for me to penetrate north. I wasn't planning on the golf course at all.
At 3000' in that area wouldn't you be in the approach path of Rwy 10L and 10R of SFO or the departure path of Rwy of 28L or 28R?
@@JohnLitherland I wasn’t in the bravo
Got a little too far back on that nice convergent air. Hope the golf course is good with emergency put down. Cool scenery.
They were cool with it, rolled up to mostly ask if everything was ok. That probably never happened before there. PGs never go that way.
Whoa, how'd you get so high? That seems way higher than regular ridge lift... Did you find a thermal in all that wind?
yep must have been a thermal
Misleading title - just click bait
I feel let down. The title says "...emergency landing in the middle of a lake." All the suspense and nobody even gets their feet wet! This is more like HG pilot makes really nice improvised landing on a golf course.
Thanks for that. I started watching, saw your comment, and stopped. Cheers!
Anyone who has flown the shear is more amazed by this than someone who does a crash and splash.
you're my hero Dude!!!
Very beautiful, but at the end my a*s got tense 😬😆
hahahaha
Phew!!
very nice Landing
Must be tee time.
Nice one
I was hoping you were showing a solution. :)
I think the solution is to replace them with nutserts and machine screws.
Ok. Maybe it's time for me to finally get one of those kits.
You ever get scared of the wind will take you right out to sea? Miles and miles and miles??
The wind is generally coming from the sea. Even if not, we're faster than the wind, like how fish can swim upstream.
Swinging about like a rabid koala
Nice😊
Here's an idea, when you're flying a bladewing like the Atos (for the first time) make a high approach to get a feel for how the glider is going to preform when out of the lift band and into whatever windspeed you have. Then you can better judge how to make your landing approach. It looks like the pilot thought a bit of low maneuvering might salvage the landing. Man, low turns in an unfamiliar glider in windy conditions is a recipe for an accident. It's better to incrementally learn how to manage an approach than trying to force the landing by doing low maneuvering...
Cool 👍
What is the serial number?

Don't turn downwind at the base of the TCA
Sweet! That was not a big landing field.
On a topless you have to come in just right or it doesn't work.
Rattling good fit on that one 👍
The new kingpost will be here before too long!
What rope did you use for the VG?
Robline brand
@@bustedkeel Thank you for the reply. However, please let me know the exact size or model number. I have been trying to change the VG rope on my U2 and bought 3 different spectra lines so far, none of them fit well with the pulleys in the downtube or the base bar cleat.
@@nice2care Robline Orion 500 3mm
I'm so old I remember when mylar inserts first came out. And of course Will's Wing at first refused to incorporate into their gliders, just like their first refused to have streamlined down tubes, and refuse to have a VG system talk about some arrogant pricks lol
I guess they got with the program
Great great video man!
Glad you liked it!
Be certain to fully open the center zipper and stick your head inside and inspect all visible spars for denting, damage and corrosion. Also check that the VG pulleys are clear and the VG rope is not snagged. Also check the rope that holds the crossbar hinge from rising up to high and damaging the center battens and batten pockets. Also, the backup loop quick link needs to be inspected to be certain that the nut has not opened up. Additionally, the backup loop needs to be on top of the VG rope in the event the keel breaks in flight. Good job on opening the elastic on the king post so that the nut is inspected. Those jam nuts must never be used more than one time. They cost about a quarter each in bulk and should be thrown away every time they are removed. Myself and several others I know have had our hang straps come off on one side in flight when the nut backed off. Keep up the good work!
All good ideas!
@@bustedkeel We're all in this together, thanks.
Thank you so much for posting this. If you’re ever taking requests could you do a “how to put your glider back in the bag” for the sport 3? There’s nothing solid out there on UA-cam.
Maybe. I could also show you sometime when you're breaking down. Main thing is to protect the sail everywhere.
dont have a S3 but I'm usually checking also the bolt/nut holding downtubes up by the keel
Right, I actually thought about mentioning it but skipped it because I rarely look at it because it isn't possible for that nut to come off with the way you have to disconnect the downtube and turn the whole fitting to turn the nut. It's a neat safety design. It will be pretty noticeable if that somehow wasn't done. On some gliders like the Falcon 1 and others where the nut isn't wedged into the fitting it's more important to check it.
Didn't know. Thanks for info.
Well that was a pretty good preflight, one thing I would have checked was the VG system up in the sail and if the glider is so equipped the swinging crossbar. I failed the check that on a pre-flight in the swinging cross bar was not swinging. Meaning I had a major turn right after lunch and it put me back in the hill hard, so hard it broke the base tube on a huge rock. Thank God my parachute cushion the blow to my chest. Also cracked my helmet on another rock. You might want to mention that you should do an annual inspection and seriously look at every connection.
So if I understand, the floating crossbar wasn't moving side to side? What caused that?
@@bustedkeel this was an older Moyes glider with a mechanical swinging (floating) crossbar that was attached to the keel. One small part of the assembly was slightly bent and there are some grit / sand in the assembly. The turn after takeoff was so bad I did a 540° circle before I hit the hill. My buddies thought I was showing off right up to impact 😆
