Portland's Volcanoes
Переглядів 1,4 тис.3 роки тому
Just a little quarantine project, to document Portland's unusual geology. Inspired by Tom Scott, Jay Foreman, and Huell Howser! This took so much work. Maybe it's a pilot episode. We'll see how it goes! Corrections: - Apparently “decorational” isn’t really a word. I always thought it was. Oh well. - Portland doesn’t store all of its drinking water at Powell Butte. It’s just one part of the city...

If We Were Vampires - Jason Isbell cover by Vincent Colavin

This is one of the most powerful and affecting songs I know, and the guitar part is also the most challenging I've ever learned. It's a real pleasure to play. I hope you enjoy it! Between this and Elvis Presley Blues, I feel much more confident in my fingerpicking (aka Travis picking) than I used to. If anyone is interested in a how-to video about Travis picking, please let me know! I'm not an ...
Dancing in the Dark - Bruce Springsteen cover by Vincent Colavin

Playing an acoustic cover from old Bruce. Thought it was fitting because of my last song. I tried out a new recording technique where I used only one microphone positioned a couple feet away from me. I kind of like the sound, but it was very challenging to mix. I thought it would be better because of how loud the performance is. I don't know if I'll do it again. Overall I am pretty happy with t...

Pacific Northwest Carpenter's Council - original song by Vincent Colavin

New original song! This one was a real pain in the ass to record. Took like 35 takes over two days, and I still didn't quite nail it. My intention was to write a song in the style of the Mountain Goats, especially the All Hail West Texas era. Guitar is capo'd on 3rd fret but you can play wherever suits your range. Verse: Bm Em Am Em Chorus: D Dmaj7 G Bm And here are the lyrics. [verse 1] midtow...

Hey folks! I'll be uploading videos much more regularly. I'm currently aiming for once a week, on Saturday mornings. I recorded this while I waited for my lentil soup to finish cooking. I was a bit hunched, and the performance is (as usual) not perfect. I wanted it to have a sort of "homey" vibe, so I didn't mind the imperfections, or the noise from the stove. I also tried to have a little more...
Ce Soir - original song

I originally wrote this song around 2015, when I was processing some complicated feelings around death, and my relationship to my body. I hope it mostly speaks for itself. This is the most difficult song I've ever written, both in terms of the lyrics and the guitar work. Getting a good take was draining. It could always be better. I struggled with whether to translate the French lyrics. I initi...
Drinking Song (original song)

I'm getting into the swing of re-recording the songs I've already put on my channel. Here's my first original tune with the new recording setup. It's good but not perfect, and I think that's alright. My buddy Gerard gave me some tips on recording and mixing that I've tried to apply here.

damn dude, knocked it outta the park!
fuck yeah, love this
So good Vinnie!!!
Nice!!!
Welcome back!
haha thanks, this is a bit of a one off but i'm happy to share it!
Wow, what a talent! It's so mesmerizing and beautiful how they bring poems to life with their guitar. You've got some serious skills! 🎸
thanks!
Not pedandic, but hair-splitting or nitpicking.... And that, is pendantic. :)
Thanks for your efforts on this. Very helpful and informative video 🙂
Listening to this while having an emotional breakdown and crisis is really the vibe *chef kiss*
What about Mount Scott?????
I noted this in the corrections in the video description. I were to re-shoot this I would add Mount Scott. Because the summit is quite a ways outside of Portland city limits I decided not to include it, but at least one unnamed side-vent (in the Willamette National Cemetery) _is_ in city limits, so that was just a mistake on my part.
@@vincentcolavin no sweat at all, I’m just a big Mount Scoot lover (we call it “Scoot” cause we don’t like Harvey Scott
Excellent work Vince. This is great, thanks for putting some good into the world 🌎
Springtime baby!
Yeah babey
ONE THING I Don't Miss About ""PORTLAND" IS The "seemingly endless "RAIN""
Nice performance friend, well done!!
This was so interesting. Thanks so much!
Oh man, that chorus is so good.
Don't move to Portland. We got volcanoes. Ya hear that?!? VOLCANOES! And snow... Sometimes. And ice storms too. And cones. Lots and lots of cones.
Wow I had no idea they were volcanoes! And I didn't know we were a hot spot for volcanoes compared to other ring of fire west coast cities. I hope they revisit that geothermal hot spring idea, I love it.
Awesome work, impatient of moving back to the US! Much love!
This was great Vincent!
Good stuff! Would love more of these about the region.
Mt. Tabor and Powell Butte are national treasures!
You are wonderful! Thank you.
Can you do one about the best and worst ways to cross the Willamette, on bike and on foot?
This would be fun. Another idea is best and worst ways to pronounce Willamette.
just leaving a comment here, no one else is hanging out in the comments section, it's just me baby. check out this nice song: ua-cam.com/video/q_kFsrtkCnI/v-deo.html
This isn't a surprise but I'm a big sucker for sweet soft acoustic guitar licks with plenty of hammer-ons and slides and stuff. My heart just sings when I hear it. Like an early 2000s alt romcom or sitcom, I'm not sure what I'm getting at here, but it's something in the autumn, before third wave coffee was widespread and baristas would consistently burn the milk and steam it into really stiff foam, and I'm projecting here, but, like a Chris Pureka song in a Gilmore Girls episode, before our collective loss of innocence, before we became quite so well acquainted with the void. I'm chasing that feeling.
There weren't any Chris Pureka songs in the Gilmore Girls soundtrack. But it's a very believable vibe.
Good cover, i do covers in spanish, i would like to know if you want suscribe and share my channel
I absolutely love this song, great cover. <3
Thank you very much :)

Fuck yeah. such a great take on DITD.
Thanks so much Duke! It's a lot of fun to play.
I enjoy this

Thanks Alicia!

I feel like you just shook this video like a hurricane
You are talented singer 👨🎤
Love it 😍
I love your channel.! Your videos look amazing 😉
Beautiful Cover

I love the melody <3
Merci :)
it's bitter sweet and makes me feel like the one crab in the barrel with enough hope to get out
Oh cool, cool, I'm glad. My interpretation is that it's less about escaping the barrel and more about making a life and finding peace in the barrel. But the song is kinda vague, and whatever you get from it can be true.
