Saltless Shakedowns
United States
Приєднався 5 бер 2012
The Saltless are pitiful creatures. Saltless sailors yearn for salty seas.
You may be "Saltless" if you sail the Great lakes or any inland waterway and find yourself in a perpetual shakedown, continually traveling beyond your homeport to other ports testing your vessel for worthiness.
A preparation for a dream.
A dream of the day the lines are cast off
A dream to sail beyond that distant horizon.
This day we would find the joy we seek, not being incombered. This day would break the shackles of a pitifully short sailing season. The dream of no longer being impeded by land and experiencing the taste, the smell and the vastness of the salty sea.
If this is your dream, you may be a wayfaring Saltless.
I share my odyssey, my experiences, and my persistent preparations. These are my Saltless stories, pictures, and videos.

@@saltlessshakedowns4999 not sure yet Need to see what their plan is
Are you still in Ludington Michigan
Naw we were on a schedule so had to leave the next morning. Are you heading North or South?
@saltlessshakedowns4999 north. we are still waiting on our motor to be fixed
@@svjaydenmarie4450 When it is fixed are you heading South? I would like to meet up.
@@saltlessshakedowns4999 we are headed towards the Erie canal

“Peace ooot” 🤣
We will be here Motor is at the mechanics
We will be in Ludington on Friday. Are you at anchor?
@saltlessshakedowns4999 yes we are anchored ⚓️ bye the splash pad
@@saltlessshakedowns4999 Right past the yacht club Entrance.
@saltlessshakedowns4999 how's it going did yall make it to Ludington
@@svjaydenmarie4450 Yeah we made it late on Saturday after a pretty rough ride. Got some food at bed early for a 7am departure. Sorry we missed ya.
We are in Ludington Michigan maybe yall can swing in and say hi
Well my boat is currently @ Manitou Island. Probably will not get to Ludington until Friday
@@svjaydenmarie4450 just. Tied up on sea wall at municipal marina. Pretty randy out there today. Going to get something to eat

@@krokodilegrundee5101 It’s almost like it’s not his daughter. They look nothing alike lmaoo.
Nice little anchorage on the north side of the island. Hard to believe that was a busy harbor in the old days
Looks like a great trip! We had a leak in a through hull and had to have our boat pulled out 😢. Replacing all (4- they were plastic). Hoping it’s back in before our trip to SoHa next week.
Maybe pack more of a wad. Kinda sounds like a “queef”🤣
Lol

Lol
Looking good my man
Looks nice. Wonder how it would have looked if you changed the stripe direction on the end panel? I might have done it that way. Did you have a piping foot on your sewing machine? Premade piping or diy?
Yes I did have a piping foot. The reason I did it the way I did (at least my thought process) Was I did not want a solid color on the face of the rear cushion.
Hello
Howdy howdy! Been sailing Are you in Michigan
@@saltlessshakedowns4999 we're on lake Huron heading to Bay City we are in Saginaw Bay at the moment we're working our way up around the top after we leave Bay City New Holland Michigan to complete our America's Great loop
11.7 knots is pretty good. How much gain would there be if you had the jib up?
He miss spoke. It was 7 knots
I’m a little late but, I think a year or two ago I saw this boat beat up at Frankfort after it had been ashore during a bad storm. We were anchored at Frankfort.
Yeah. That was me :( I learned a lot from that experience, especially anchoring in Frankfort. I added 300' to my existing 140' of rode and chain. Now, when in doubt, I let waaaay more out. I am thinking of adding a rode weight as well to hold down the line so it pulls straight during heavy winds. Any thoughts on this? Here is some additional information about that night you may not be aware of: My marina neighbor was solo sailing outside the Frankfort harbor in that storm. He had some issue and ended up on the sandbar. He secured the boat and swam to shore. Next day his boat sank as soon as they freed it from the bar... I guess I was lucky :)
@@saltlessshakedowns4999 how much chain do you have?
@@saltlessshakedowns4999 we have 150’ of chain however, if we had less we would use rode weight.
@@controllerwarrior4455 only 20' because I do not have a windlass.
@@controllerwarrior4455 And that is what I am thinking. How heavy is your boat and how heavy of a weight would you use? I am thinking 15lbs max would be needed.
you guys got instagram to follow?
Not yet
still got catalina 30? no new videos
Yes. I am steeped in home remodeling projects. I should start posting again as I get near the end. Stay tuned
what chair are you sitting on? have a link?
It is one of those West Marine Captain chairs. Kinda pricey there should be a cheaper alternative out there. I do like the chair when sitting n it but it is a pain and always in the way when I am not. I replaced the chairs with cockpoit cushions and it is a better solution IMHO. www.westmarine.com/west-marine-go-anywhere-high-back-seat-2-20689444.html
Do you have the dimensions that you used? I just bought a Catalina 30 and I need to make some cockpit cushions and greatly appreciate any tips and dimensions used. Great video, thanks for posting it.
I used the old cushions which had vinyl covers. Sail right is the place to go. They will show you how to measure. Cutting the foam is the difficult part. You want it clean and straight. I failed on the one I had to cut so figure that out. Watch the videos get a good sewing machine and take your time. Also, use the piping. Actually makes it easier. Mine look good but there are so many mistakes. I want to do it again because I know I can do better. Make the back cushions too. My crew and I love these! Best thing I ever have done.
@@saltlessshakedowns4999 Thank you so much for the information!! I really appreciate it. Thanks for the great video!!
looking at the wind pushing down the pontoon arm, you needed to reverse out, one thing i learnt really early , was never fight the wind, use it to your advantage, your bow was always going to get pushed round by the wind....
You are so right!!
What was your final conclusion? I have same problem with my C27 (port prop walk and wind exacerbating the problem. Short burts reverse then neutral and backing up into then out of the empty slip across might help. spring line also to pivot around. Backing all the way out the fairway would be the finalk solution.
I think I had a couple problems. A viewer pointed out how my fender may have influenced the action and I also noticed it is hard to find the real neutral on this transmission. When I bought the boat I notice a ribbon on the axle so I think the previous owner had the same problem. I am getting better at hitting neutral and the boat seems to back better now. Still awful but now manageable.
What is the orientation of your propellor? If it’s left oriented, you will be pushed to starboard and hard to go to port.
How the hell! What a rough start to the trip
You don't even know the half of it. I was in like 8 footers yesterday with the rando 10 to 12 footer. I listed over 50 degrees a few times. And I had to go forward to secure the Genoa during this! Thank you Anastasia for the harness!!
Your problem was a stuck fender not prop walk.
I saw the fender but I do not think it grabbed hard enough but maybe so.
Heres your problem... ....PRIDE... I lived aboard a C 30 in Little Narragansett Bay year round for 3 years The Cat 30 is Notorious for propwalk- cantakerous helm in reverse. I ALWAYS backed my boat into my slip... again..."Live Aboard" Ya gotta be able to step off your floating home like steping out your front door. My dock was actually at the end of the Paw atuck River so i ALWAYS had to deall with river AND tidal currents. Lots of noses of 40-50ft boats poking out into the channel out... The magic words...? Spring/ kedge... USE YOUR DOCK LINES !!! CREATIVELY ... Youll look like a Pro !!! Try backing in... Youll love having close access to the dock. Backing out....throw a stern line over a pilling... feed it out untill stoping will pivot the nose out PERFECT... GO, ! (mind the line dont get fouled !!) Backing in..( what all us cool kids do) Come nose in... lasso a pilling.....hard over nose out ...walk the line to the transom...haul in ...jump on the dock.. Walk her back. In my situation id need a bow line too ...to keep the nose out of trouble. I belive familiarity and good execution of these spinging and kedging tricks are fundamental, and executed well are a sign of good seamanship as any thing i can think of. If you have an extra hand it helps but everyone needs to SEE what is going to happen and why BEFORE HAND ! 😂😂😂 Hope that helps. Relax...have fun...plan ahead. "The wind and tide...are always on the side....of the Wise Mariner "
Yes. I like what you have to say and I will practice when I have the opportunity. Almost 100% anchoring and mooring now so it will be far and few opportunities. I have tried stern in a couple of times and it was just not predictable enough, so I always abandoned it. Your technique seems like the way for sure! Thank you for your advice and especially your understanding!
Dam that's interesting How often to you keep it up on the davits
I usually travel with the dinghy lifted. I go so much faster. I have been in some 6 ~ 8 footers with it up with the surfer coming up to the bottom of the dink.
Wow that's epic
I can't imagine if you were in or close to an actual ocean and not in a lake. I am a somewhat an amateur with my sailing expertise in the past and it looked like crap. If you couldn't even get out of the dock how did you set the sails and spinnaker? Show that!
You should do some research on the Great Lakes. How long have you been sailing?
I have a query. When you were in the pen , you had a finger jetty on your port sis, but in your animation you were moored with jetty on the starboard side and what looks like a different pen. Where were you??‽ or are you making excuse?? Catalinas do have a horrible prop walk issue, people who say they don't, hasn't sailed on one. But the size of that boat you should have been able to get out easily.
I actually was able to get out easily but it admittedly would have been easier if I was not stubborn in my plan. Not making any excuses just making video.
Aloha Mate ... been catching some of your videos, good to see ya...

Looks like flat water, the hope the sailing goes well!
Honestly you sir! Just put a smile on my face today❤ thank you
Well that put a smile on my face!
Cool
Nice shades hoss
My favorite shades until I get the real Ray Bans :)
Looks like a rear day fishin! Trying to splash ours and get out there today.
That sounds awesome. I may be up your way in a week. Not sure, depends on which way the wind blows :)
I look like a dork
You would have looked wayyy cooler with a Coho on :)
What is the length of your dinghy? I'm debating between a foredeck dinghy or having one hanging on davits astern.
It is at least 10.5 feet and frankly way to large for the boat. I would recommend something smaller with less over hang.
Get down here my man
Now my Schedule is full up. Heading on a two week cruise in July and probably all of August. How late in the season do you sail?
@@saltlessshakedowns4999 sail till we haul in October
Looks kinda cold!
Hell yeah! Looks cold 😮
i disconected my hot water kinda want it back
Dude it is very nice. And I smell perty after my morning Showa.
Perfect
I’ve sometimes had the same problem with my Catalina 30 backing out of my slip at Torresens. Wind from the north against my starboard side made it extra hard to get the boat to back into that breeze. So I just said oh well let the boat have its way and backed down the short fairway. That is good practice also.😊
I have a story about backing out of Torresen's and my son leaving one of the lines attached. Never trust anyone :)
