Making a Didjeridoo From Agvae
Phils Baja Surgery.wmv
Переглядів 77613 років тому
In Nov. 2008, Phil was surfing in Baja during some hard offshore winds. The surf was good but the wind got the better of Phils head. With no medical facility for miles, our camp was quickly transformed into a surgery center. Lucky for Phil, Glen Horn was there to save the day!
Heard about something photographers call 'focus'? Thought not!
Desert frog Didgeridoo 👍😊👍
Not even how they are traditionally made.. not a real didgeridoo
Hi Glen!- HELP!! I just finished my first AGAVE didge and I think I failed epically by a costly mistake using over powered grinding tool, not paying attention to my depth. In short -I removed too much of the inner pulp all the way up to the mouth piece, so there is NO 1 -1/4 bore tube to the 32 inch mark..I literally took out all the pulp from the bell up to the mouth down to the hard wood roughly leaving a consistent and even 1/4 inch thick edge from the mouth end to 1/2 inch thick a the mouth of the bell which is almost 9 inches wide.. My inner diameter at the mouth (without mouth piece)is 2 inches and gradually expands out to 9 inches at the bell end. So the whole inside is way wider from the mouth to the bell. I made a 3 inch long, 2 inch inner diameter, 1-1/2 diameter hole mouthpiece made of Mesquite wood. It looks fantastic..but... When all sealed , glued and finished, I tried to play it for the first time. (not a beginner player)..It literally sucked the air out of my mouth and I cannot sustain a drone. This is a remarkable Agave 87 Inches long and a perfect bell..I am devastated that I may have ruined such a fantastic plant. Question- Can the zero back pressure issue be fixed somehow? Would a much longer mouthpiece with a smaller- consistent clean bore hole of 1-1/4 inches solve some of the problem with the back pressure? or an even Longer mouthpiece? Thank you for any advice you can offer. -Roy
Love this video! Watched several but this one is perfect and I have everything I need including a machete I got from Africa & an agave I cut down in Sedona. Thanks so much!
You can also tie a joshua tree needle to a stick and it makes a sharp Icee spoon shaped scoop like a woodpecker beak, and you keep poking inside til you get a hole all the way through, then you widen it, so you dont have to cut and use glue or ties...
Super cool : video.
love the final sound. Do you need my address to send it to me?LMAO
Amazing! Thank you a lot! Your work inspired me! I am gonna take some Agvae pretty soon, and gonna make my first Didjeridoo with less tools, but no problems. Thank you for sharing! Greetings from Brasil!
Great instructions! Looks like the orange tooling gel i use for casting. I like the color. Great idea glassing the bell too! Im still searching for a proper agave. Also love your workshop! Thanks for posting.
A didgeridoo is made from one piece of wood, not two.
Thats not a didgeridoo. . .
hola excelente explicacion saludos desde México me podría decir por favor que material le ponen en la parte de adentro gracias.
I have made over 30 now, kick ass didges. I mostly learned from you, but have modified it. I have also successfully made a 13 ft Didge! Thank you!
Outstanding, looks like a great locale and some happiness where you are posted up and setup shop at...Epic...Could you reference that cutting bit. I have found some similar but just curious great video and stepping into my 1st didj...Thank You both...
WOW...Awesome love the whole setup and beautiful work...Of course from a Surfer...
Do you sell these and if so for how muck including shipping to Florida usa.
I have three agave stalks, one fully grown and two about 5 to 6 feet grown. If I cut the stalks down, how and for how long do I dry them out?
Any input for what type/brand of Epoxy and/or Fiberglass?

Sounds Great!
Then thats a resin didgeridoo
aloha, I enjoyed your video . Thank u
Beautiful and interesting work. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Thanks for this DIY Glen Horn. I have made a few but did not use the right product for the inside or outside for that matter. It sure helps when someone like yourself shares this knowledge.
What is the resin you are using and where can it be purchased ? Thanks, really enjoyed the video and learned a great deal.
It's an AGAVE spike not an Agvae. Having said that he's made a great looking didge.
Just made my 1st one last week, thanks for this video!
Hello, thank you so much for posting all of this. i have been collecting stalks from the sonoran desret and i plan on constructing them using your methods. i love how you dont have any fancy tools, just the average stuff. i espically love the section where you show how to do the mouthpiece, great idea to clamp the sander into the workmate. i will be watching this 50 more times as i go through the various stages.please tell me more about the 32 inch chamber, does it increase the backpressure? what does it do to the pitch as opposed to opening up the entire bore all the way up and down?
Thanks super nice video and I love your workshop great view
Great Video Clips... Thank You for sharing your Technique, Hints and Tips! Best Regards from Houston!!
I'm so sad someone stole my very first and only didge I made from agave and where I live in Salem Oregon it's not easy to come by if someone knows where I could buy another spike to make a new one that'd be awesome only been playing a few months and I just got circular breathing down last week then poof my didge is gone
Hope to obtain a Yucca didge some ay. Would rather make one, though no Yuccas found in this part of Idaho/Oregon.
Was enjoyable to watch both sections. Not sure about the red interior, but each didge maker has to leave their mark/style. :)
omg wasted my time the most importing thing is how 2 make the thing do a voice what U PUT INSIDE IT?????
Thanks for taking the time to video tape this... Very interesting. I have 2 daughters who are taking this instrument up...
wow
to make the splitting easier you could use a chalk box instead of fussing around with tape. i dont think it would stain, but if it did they have some color choices available.
Hi, I started using a machete and a sledge hammer which makes it split perfect, with no seam at all. But thanks for the input.
Hi Glen and Roberta! I loved your vids! I've been making agave didges for years, but the surfboard techniques are awesome! I will start doing this. Thanks for your generosity in sharing your knowledge. Your honesty and integrity in living the life you love is very inspiring. <3
Thank you! Been in Mexico and just got back - that is why I haven't responded earlier.
No worries. Welcome back! Hope you had a great time! ;-)
Excelente tutorial. Muchas gracias!!
de nada.
I've been told it is possible to collect agave from places in New Mexico, like the Gila National Forest, but you need to get permits to collect the stalks.
I don't know the regulations there. Sorry. Good luck.
where is that place im from tijauna mexico
Starting from El Rosario down they are all over the place. Have fun.
+Fusion “JAMM Fusion de Vientos” de vientos sorry been in mexico. just go beyond el rosario and they are everywhere just take your pick good luck and have fun
tns very much mate!!!
Great vids Glen. I do almost the same thing as you. I use a fiberglass epoxy that sets up too quickly to pour and roll. The idea of using hole saws to clean out the inside is something Im going to use. Thanks for the vids.
Hi, make sure you drag the hole saw otherwise it will bite and you will lose control. It will take a chunk out of your didj. Good luck.
Wire wheel brushes with hex is where its @
Is it really a didg or is it a Alphorn?
No its a didj.
go to the florist ;-)
How to make a didgeridoo with surfboard shaping tools!
Thanks! It's a blast!
i live in the netherlands ..... where can i find this kind of wood ??? i would love to build one like this ;)

If you come to Baja Mexico and start from El Rosario down they are all over the place. Have fun and good luck and I know it is a long ways away from where you are.
Sweet video Glen!:-)
Amazing. Thank you from the heart!!!
