Fowl Roosting in Trees (27 October, 2024)
My yard fowl, some of which include my straight bred fowl I rotate in various pens, will often take to the trees during the summer. Some adult fowl prefer the trees, but will rotate like wild turkey. The ones who remain anyhow.
I have noticed a cycle in recent years, where winter gets so severe in January, they abandon the trees.
Typically young fowl, fully feathered chicks will start the cycle or perhaps one OG hen will show them the way an evening. By July they’re into the trees again.
It recently took me all weekend to catch this grey stag off my Ma’s yard. I made this video at dusk, well into roosting time but early yet. Caught the stag after dark.

Yard Walk (25 October, 2024)
Переглядів 94928 днів тому
Just sharing some of my observations walking the yard with the bull dog. Mornings I’ve carpentry work to attend to are earlier and faster, mornings I stay home and work my farm all day, are slower and include more observation. Taking a seat, and watching the place, writing, considering projects and the steps ahead, is paramount.

These are my Ma’s fowl in Pennsylvania. She maintains a flock of Brown Red from fowl that I bred and brought down from Maine during my years of breeding them. She raises chicks every year and they mature free range, I manage/help by catching, removing from the flock, bringing some pullets, or by replacing the brood cock. They’re more wild acting than my fowl, natural selection being a strong me...

Dawn and Dusk Yard Fowl Feeding
Переглядів 68Місяць тому
Dawn feeding of the yard fowl, and then later toward sunset. Many folks over feed their fowl. Yard fowl are active; they forage all daylight hours, while finding water and evading predatory teeth, talon and claw. This is when I observe my fowl and the yard. I consider all the dynamics within and across the farm and forest environment.
American Roundhead Gamefowl (September 11 - 23, 2024)

After being away two weeks in Europe, I documented a bit of my interactions with this particular stag and his mother. The hen (stag’s dam) is a Roundhead from Delaware, I couldn’t find much else out about her, but saw her while on the road in Pennsylvania and couldn’t let her go. The sire to this stag is an East Coast, American Asil stag, of mostly Reynolds (Atkinson / Desi) blood I obtained fr...
Whitehackle Muff stag (July 2024)

One of my brood pens is a trio of two (Hoy/Sears/Bean) muff hens I bred, full sisters, with a spangle Low (Hoy/Sears) Muff bull stag. They’ve produced some nice chicks. I am hopeful this guy and his brothers and sisters mature.
Hoy Muff stag (20 June, 2024)

The best ‘Hoy’ muff stag out of my main muff brood pen. They’re Whitehackle Muff, but from what I can tell no matter what was bred into them over the years, each source I’ve obtained fowl from when it came to this blood, sticks to the term “Hoy”, “Sears”, or “Whitehackle” muff, when describing them. Seems the foundation have been the fowl made well known by Lawman, Hoy, Murphy, Morgan, Gleezen,...

This is not an ideal husbandry situation, but so far it’s working out. The stag will eventually (most likely) not be trusted around his chicks, and that’s how it goes. For now they all seem to be fine in this fly pen. Just sharing my fowl.

I have been trying to establish a quality family of the old ‘New England Muff’ fowl for the last three years. These guys are becoming ever more rare, and I’ve acquired the best I could find and afford. They are promising fowl, this pen includes two of my favorite muff hens I’ve bred from a ‘Texas Hoy Cock’ and a ‘Sears (Hoy) Muff’ hen from Connecticut, bred to a spangled stag from Georgia. The ...
Barred Owl and Game Fowl (28 March 2024)
Переглядів 1557 місяців тому
Recently dubbed stag of mine, been wanting to handle him more and calm him down a bit. Anyhow a couple evenings ago, he told me an aerial predator was flying by, I joke it’s their “death from above” call. Sure enough a barred owl slowly went on by on the edge of my yard into the tree line. I have a lot of barred owls at my place, and they do prey on my fowl, but I still love them. So I take the...
Asil chicks
Переглядів 5229 місяців тому
One of my yard hens hatched some of my red Asil chicks. Winter hatching is not normal for my hens but the past two winters, my Asil chose to lay and go broody. Since Asil lay so few eggs, I collected from the nest boxes and placed them under one of my favorite yard hens.

@@downtheridge oh Maine Pa here ya id keep him too I would have been interested in that rooster Thanks
@@thomasjcorson7502 He has to mature, still a young stag. I been handling him often and he’s calming down some
Do you think its better to have a very diverse freerange flock or have all the same breed of gamefowl in a flock? I personally like all the same breed because you know what your gonna for offspring and they all took better when they are all the same breed but i didnt know if it was better for sustainability to have a very diverse flock
@@kkhelton4462 it depends what your goals are. I set my Ma up with only Brown Reds for that reason. I have families of fowl I breed straight, and brood fowl/chicks end up on the yard and some fowl remain. I mark brood fowl chicks, and band the ones who stand out closer to maturity. I use the yard as a way to let them mature and observe the fowl. I wouldn’t necessarily take a mongrel into a brood pen. After years of this, eventually the yard fowl would become homogenized no matter how you started.
At 6:45 what breed is that?
Brown Red. Straight comb, Alabama BR and Wingate BR blood.
@downtheridge ah okay thanks where did you get him?
@@kkhelton4462 I gave my Ma some of my Brown Red fowl that I bred, and I catch stags off her yard every year.
they are hard to tame, any tips
@@genghis1417 Brown Red can be high-strung. I handle the hens, and if they’re calm as mothers with a clutch, I let those hens set and hatch others’ eggs more so than wild hens. Wild hens teach chicks to be wild.

Where do you live?
Maine
@downtheridge I live in indiana and my straight comb birds get some frost bite on their combs when I gets down in the negatives do you have this problem?
@@kkhelton4462 I usually dub my stags over winter. Some guys let the comb become frost bit and I’ve seen cocks with altered full wattles and comb and they’re fine in a pen. Free range fowl in New England ought to be dubbed in my opinion.
@downtheridge I've never dubbed any of mine before if I do it will they stay dubbed or will I have to do it agian?
@@kkhelton4462 Once. I can explain over the phone some time if need be. 570-856-8707

Hello can i purchase a pair of youre muffs?
Beautiful ❤
Do the turkey Tom’s mess with your stags?
You got any other page I'm interested buying some of those red Quills u have?$
Do you require a livestock guardian dog?
No, but I’m sure one would help for evenings; they’re 24/7 on guard, outside.
Your birds survived the winter completely free range?! That is incredible. I’m in upstate NY and looking into doing the same thing. Didn’t realize they were capeable of surviving the winter if they need to.
They’re the best sustainable chicken, and yes they can survive with feed and a bit of care
Nice lil buddy i need one of those lol
That's a great looking white hackle muff
How do you keep them alive through the winter with them roosting in the trees?
I feed them, and make sure they have fresh water. They don’t have to roost in the trees, but many of them do until January. They rotate, and roost in out buildings, the barn, take shelter when they want.
Do you have any recommendations on making a little money on the farm to fund backyard projects like this?
@@fishguygobies3932 one can sell vegetables, and also livestock.
