I'm Ellen, a crafter and costumemaker based in the south of Sweden. Post apocalypse and wasteland dystopia is my main thing but I also stray into all sorts goth, horror and fetish too.
I'm always excited about trying out new methods and materials and I love sharing it with the crafting Community so this is one way of doing just that :)

Patina tutorial Rust and verdigris activator
- tutorial on how to make this fast acting corrosion activator that creates authentic patina on metal objects.
This is a recipe and tutorial for a fast acting rust activator using chemicals, bit more expensive than the standard DIY vinegar one but still cheap if you make it yourself. It works really fast and it’s definitely the rust activator I use for most of my rusty needs.
Chemicals used can be found on eBay or amazon and the likes and probably in the hardware store depending on where you live in the world.
SAFETY DISCLAIMER: Always make sure you are taking the right precautions handling chemicals and make sure to check the danger pictograms on the products and gear up accordingly.
You’ll need:
- kitchen scale
- container to mix the solution in
- measuring cup (optional)
- heavy duty polyethylene plastic bottle for the finished product
Mixing relations:
Optimized for rust/iron:
Water: 94 parts
Ammonium chloride: 1 part
Copper sulfate: 5 parts
Ingredients for 1 liter:
Water: ca 9,4 dl (940 g)
Ammonium chloride 10 g
Copper sulfate: 50 g
Instructions:
measure up copper sulphate and ammonium chloride
add water up to the 1 litre mark
stir until dissolved
stir again until dissolved
let the solution rest until there are no lumps left and more clear than cloudy
pour into the bottle for storage or go right ahead and use it. Happy rusting!
For rust patina: apply on untreated or sanded down iron/steel or iron powder with a brush or spray bottle, let cure for 30 mins to a few hours and repeat the process until you’re happy with the result. You can of course also soak parts in it like with the vinegar rust activator.
You can also find this tutorial and the specific Verdigris one in my blog over at

Fallout metal paint effect - (less than) 5 minute tutorials
Переглядів 89 тис.3 роки тому
Quick video tutorial on creating a paint effect of paint discolored by rust over time, fitting for post apocalyptic style costume, armor and props, Fallout cosplay and stuff like that. This effect can be made even more realistic with applied rust along the painted edges as well but I will make a longer, more in depth video about this technique as well and that one will cover it properly :) Buuu...
Bitumen oil dirt effect for post apocalyptic costume making - (less than) 5 minute tutorials
Переглядів 2 тис.3 роки тому
Quick tutorial on how to use bitumen for a dark greasylooking dirt effect when weathering your post apocalyptic costume. There is expensive bitumen paint out there, this is a cheaper alternative covered in this tutorial. I use a petroleumbased asphalt glue (asfaltskitt in swedish) bought at the hardware store. Disclaimer: Keep in mind that this is hazardous and flammable products involved - rea...
Post apocalyptic costume making - tire armor tutorial
Переглядів 9 тис.5 років тому
Basic tutorial for making tire armor for your post apocalyptic costume! With this method I'm using EVA-foam for a base and adding cross bike tires, creating lightweight tire armor with a heavy look. Materials used: - bike tires of your choice - new or used - minimum 7 mm eva-foam, use black or grey so you don't have to prime/plasti dip it if you don't want to - contact cement glue - acetone/deg...
Hot dog
Nice, but not 5 minutes....
I usually frown on faux finishes, opting to go the extra long way around to obtain the real thing instead. But in some circumstances that can be just about impossible. The results for this example are very believable, I'm impressed.
Question- did you prime the base black? What kind of paint would you use to prime under this technique?
Awesome!! Thank you for posting this!
I used my leather bracer
Madmax brought me here lol. 🤘
Son of a b***h your a genius
this is low-key bad. sorry.
Nice job!!!.. Thanks for sharing!
Yo this can be used as real armor tho
Seriously?? Damn, that's cool! I don't do cosplay or anything like that, but this is the kind of look I love for things in my yard...old and weathered, without having to wait for it to get old and weathered. Thanks for the great tutorial.❤ I'll be tucking this video away in one of my UA-cam playlists.
Just the effect I’ve been looking for on my old Jeep. Best and easiest looking patina job I’ve seen so far
Hi I need some help.... Can I contact you?
I agree with the others... about the best effect I've seen online. Good background music too. Not annoying or distracting, like so many other's videos (what were they thinking?)
Thats an absolutely magnificent effect
Nice i will dso this to my gas tank 😂
It looks so right 👍
This is AMAZING! I have an old marquee sign that I’m painting. I tried this and it worked perfectly, thank you!
I am going to try this! Looks dope
I painted sets in Hollyw for many years so honestly I know what I'm talking about. Your final product is one of the best I've seen online. Your procedure was pretty simple and looks better than people who performed a bunch of time consuming tricks. We used wallpaper paste rather than mustard but same effect keep up the good work
can the wall paper paste be as easily rubbed away?
It’s from the vinegar
Can anyone tell me how dry the paint should be before cleaning off the excess? Are we talking 5 minutes, 1 hour or 1 day?
Very clear and useful, thank you! Going to replicate the real rust my bike fork has.
Hello, A little hello from France where I tried your recipe on different parts of my rat rod; superb result; a big thank you for your post and moreover your voice and your eyes are charming. Lots of lovely things to you. All the best.
Thanks for sharing!! Awesome ❤. I have a question. The brown acrylic color must be water based?
These are fab! Thanks!
I’ve just come across your video and love it! I wonder if this technique could be done on wood. I’d like to try painting my son’s desk in some cool finish and wonder if this would work.
Hi! I'm glad you loved it! This technique can be used on basically anything as long as it's not too porous and can handle being rinsed off with water. So as long as it's treated, primed or painted to start with there should be no issues with wood. Hope that helps! 😊
Hey, that's cool.😊
Thank you! 😊
Работа просто Секси!👍
Outstanding! You nailed the effect. Heard of hairspray being used as a resist but not mustard. Mustard effect is way better.
Just the trick I was looking for! Thanks!
Why use mustard and not something like petroleum jelly or mayo or something?
Cheaper than mayo (at least here in Sweden), easier to rinse off with water than heavier oil based alternatives 🤷🏻♀️ It's just a personal preference really. But to quote the description above: YES, almost any medium with same texture and properties will work as masking fx mayo, toothpaste and so on
@@bloodshotbelle makes perfect sense. Thank you.
Very Nice
What a great idea!
I think IT s the easy way to make a patina and it's the real look of rust! Bravo for tout vidéos.Canada
hello I love the technique you use but I have a Volkswagen beetle do you understand that it can be done in an area as big as a car or maybe it loses a bit of reality..... you can do it in something bigger help me thanks
I love the design of the armor it looks really like something you would seen in the fallout universe. Absolutely beautiful
Thank you! I absolutely love Fallout and find lots of inspiration from it <3
Very nice! Love the effect.
Thank you, really appreciate it! ^__^
❤
Wow👍
Straight to the point and no messing around. Thank you.
Appreciate it, that's how I like things 😁
Nice tutorial!
Thank you! 💖 About time I made it haha 😅
Yes! This is so darn good!
Thank yoooou 💖💖💖
Awesome!
Great job and thank you for sharing 🤙
beautiful , thanks for getting right to the point
Wow, great idea! That's inspiring, thank you! :)
Can I use mayo, I dont really like mustard?
I guess that depends on whether you are planning to gently lick it off instead of cleaning up the mustard with water and a rag as recommended. To be honest I don't think mayo covered in paint tastes that much better than mustard but that is just a qualified guess as I have not tried either myself. I also cannot recommend stripping away any type of masking by licking it as it is a inferior method both in regards of the time efficiency and causing physical strain on the body.
Thank you for no nonsense chatter. Perfectly done.
Thank you, that's how I like tutorials so really appreciate it ❤️
Это самый лучший самый легкий и самый эфективный супер работа по устареванию поверхности! Спасибо автор я так попробую!
