Mazda Torque Converter Clutch Operation
Переглядів 1,8 тис.2 місяці тому
This video describes more in depth some of the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) operation that you may experience when driving a Mazda equipped with a Skyactiv Drive 6 speed automatic. In the intro I realized I called the TCC backing plate the apply plate. The difference is the backing plate is for a clutch set to push up against whereas an apply plate is doing the pressure apply to the clutches. ...

This is a follow-up to some of the questions I have received based on my first AWD video. If you have any questions about the system that I don't go over please ask, I have a lot of data logs and analysis, the first cut of this was over an hour😂 and I'm not opposed to making more videos if there is interest. #mazda #skyactiv #awd

Mazda 3 Turbo, Factory Airbox with Corksport Turbo Inlet Pipe
Переглядів 3,3 тис.11 місяців тому
I put the factory airbox on the car and paired it with an AFE high flow panel filter and the Corksport Turbo Inlet Pipe. I did it originally to get rid a high pitch harmonica/recorder noise at heavy throttle. Very annoying sound, I did not have a leak and there are others who have the same noise and some that do not. A nice side effect was of course lower intake temps and higher MAF g/s. *Edit*...

2017 CX-5 broken transmission cause of failure!

Transmission was torn down and found lots of metal! The one-way clutch failed and filled the transmission with metal. This is a low mileage failure for sure and unfortunate. #skyactiv #mazda #cx5 #automatictransmission

Obd2 data on Mazda infotainment display.
Переглядів 1,4 тис.Рік тому
I've used obd2aa in the past to display torque data on the infotainment system. it broke awhile back. Someone has rewritten a version of it and It's in beta and he updates very regularly. The update speeds between Torque and display are great, a bunch of gauges and fonts to chose from. He's also enabled the use of custom pids as well as dial control to switch between gauge sets. This is the git...
2017 CX-5 broken transmission

Quirks and Jerks of the Skyactiv Drive

I put this together based on the most frequent questions I get about the Mazda Skyactiv transmissions of why does it "jerk" as often as it does. Mazda 3 Turbo Dyno Runs, DRtuned OEM+ validation runs

Just some validation runs for DRtuned OEM vs OEM tune. More power everywhere throughout the curve. Significant low and high rpm gains while some smaller peak gains. This is specifically for people wanting to clean up the OEM tune and pushing peak power is coming later. There is a bit left on the table🫢 We wanted to get some more runs in with some "93" Octane but ran out of time, I expect bigger...

Can you do this with a 2013 Mazda CX5 sport?
Getting ready to build/repair one of these. 1st one. Dealer diagnosed as bad VB (@ $3k) but to me feels like bad low drum after driving. Big delay in D but no issues anywhere else. Everything I'm seeing however says it's the molded piston and not serviceable. Trying to confirm this. Any idea?
The Low clutch drum piston is only serviceable as a new drum from Mazda or a good used one. Its welded together and there is currently not a solution for it. There is a chance the piston is fine, you'll want to split the VB and check all the valves and vacuum test them, everyone we have opened has had significant wear on some of the accumulators and some of the valves. We import slightly oversized ones from Europe and replace with those and have had really good luck doing that. Depending on mileage and if it had heavy city use you'll also likely see the Low Clutches themselves past discard measurement even though they look fine. Neutral Idle Control slips them at a stop and every one I've measured is below discard.
@21mazda3turbo3 it's definitely the drum. Already pulled VB and went through it. Only found 1 toasted accumulator. Air check through the case shows it applying but also dumping. The high on the other hand thumps solid. Are you referring to MakTrans? I've been curious about their slightly oversized valves and coincidentally they're really the only show in town with this unit. Even SONNAX doesn't have shit for this. However the Ukraine/Poland origin gives me pause. No problems ordering from those guys?
@@ScottPrice-y5v I order all sorts of things from them! Great stuff. We've had really good luck using them for Lineartronics, the Mazdas and ZF. I have a good relationship with some of the guys at Sonnax and have used some of the prototype parts for other units but they have no desire to do anything with the Skyactivs, too niche. The Maktrans tools fit with the Sonnax jig and work nicely. It can take a few weeks for the parts to arrive based on if its in Ukraine or Poland has been my experience.
@@21mazda3turbo3 thanks. Any idea what actually happens to the low drum? Customers complaint is 5-6 second delay into drive. I'd assume shrunk piston however they usually get better hot. Aside from leaking like crazy, I've got ok apply and judging with my finger, the clearance isn't terrible. Also once in, it doesn't slip although at lights you can feel it momentarily drop out
@ScottPrice-y5v do you have the drum out of the unit yet? You can test it on the bench mounting it to the pump, I had an old clip I just uploaded using shop air with that method. Mazda had updated the drum a few times over the years. It may also be a bad sealing ring on the input shaft. They chose a slow apply strategy for the Drive engagement, which I don't really like. You can watch the solenoids and see it bring the clutch to the kiss point when you put it in Drive and then slowly apply to full. Sometimes, the car will be moving before it's applied full pressure to that set. A new friction in that set measures 1.52mm and discard is 1.475mm. I would at least open the drum and measure them and check the steels, we've had some with some hot spots running the middle of the steel. ua-cam.com/video/rVlJXndup-U/v-deo.html
This seems like a gta cheat code.
Isn't this exactly what Toyota's new GR-Four system is? Looks and functions identically in principle to what the GR Yaris and GR Corolla has
@@Goodman-4525 very similar. The rear coupling is supplied by JTEKT to Mazda and Toyota. The GR system uses 12 clutches in the coupling and .7% gear ratio difference vs the Mazda using a 7 clutch and 1.1%. I actually have a 25 GR Corolla on order and will be making some similar videos when it arrives.
Does this work for a 2016 CX-5 as well? At around 3:15, the gear readout in the video changes from "M1" to just "M." In my 2016, it never changes from "M1," so I'm not sure it's truly relearning.
What about manual transmission?
This dude 😅
How do you disable cylinder deactivation? Can you make a video on this because no one knows how to disable it.
Will this fix work instantly or over time?
3:13 You say upshift, but we're already there. I'm guessing you mean downshift...?
Vielen Dank für alles,du bist der beste.
My converter unlocks when resuming from a turn and then relocks right away
Worked for me, my car was downshifting aggressively/jerkily into 2nd gear and doesn't anymore!
Excelente,se aplico la reparación y hace los cambios perfectamente. Muchas gracias. 😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
Would this work on a 2015 Mazda 2?
Doesn't make sense. First you start the car so it's running when you are doing all this. Then midway you say start the car? It's already running
Did you watch the video? The car is on when he starts the procedure then after moving the transmission to D and then N he turns the car off (he says the car will not like it). Watch it again...
Will this work on my 2017 Mazda 6 grand touring? It’s jerks from 30-20 downshifting automatic
Just wanted to say thank you for this! We had major jerky issues with our Mazda 3 and after this, it’s running perfectly.
Hi ! I'm a french new owner of a 2020 AT Mazda 3 (2L sky-X 180 no-turbo) ; just went through the exact whole process and it worked at first time, TY for your crystal clear explanations. No time now to test it on the road but I'll update my comment ASAP for feedback.
Trying it today. Thanks!
This is like a Nintendo cheat code. My CX-5 was like a bucking bronco at times. This fixed it immediately.
Will this work on my 2010 Mazda 6
Thanks for the video🙌🏼 It worked on 2014 Mazda6 Touring. Worked on the fourth attempt. Just hold the break down pretty hard ✅ After holding at M+ for 5 sec move back to M- and hold it until cluster turns to M then just move to normal M mode(not - not +) until it shuffles to M1✅✅
I got my new 2025 cx5 last month and after 1300 miles only i experienced jerkiness on deceleration just after a stop and when pressing gas a little abruptly. I tried it 3x and the 3rd time i really pressed the brakes very hard and it worked
Just did this on my 18 CX-5. Night and day. Thank you
I don't think I try it it's a little jerky when cold sometimes
Hi, is it possible in your opinion to change the sixth gear ratio of the transmission? I have a 2020 Mazda 3 Diesel that reached 140 km/h the engine revs are 3000 rpm, too much and the car downhill decelerates and does not sail. Is there a solution for you? Thanks in advance
Thank you!!! It worked on my 2021 mazda gtr! Jerkiness is gone!!
Just did it on my 2018 Mazda CX 5 ! Worked like a charm ! Thanks a bunch !
I have a 2024 cx-5, is it normal when cold that the rpm go back to idle when i let off the throttle ? like the torque converter dont lock up
Tried it a few times on 2020 cx 5 and it didn't work. If i am under warranty would they do it for me?
On my 2021 Mazda3 Turbo I have tried this procedure several times over the past days without success. It's more than 3 years old now and has over 36k miles. For the most part, the transmission shifts smoothly. Lately it seems to shift harshly after first setting off for a drive. Shifts smoothen out as the drive goes on. I play this video while in the driver seat after driving various distances/times to do the procedure. I have tried it after driving on the freeway for an hour. No success. The engine never revs up after moving the shifter from + to - and holding for 5 seconds at least. This indicates to me that the procedure is not working. I tried again another day after a 10 mile freeway drive. Perhaps it has something to do with the transmission fluid temperature range requirement. The transmission fluid may not be hot enough after 10 minutes driving, or too hot after a 1 hour drive. What distance/time should I drive before performing this procedure, to have the transmission fluid within the required temperature range? Again, I performed this process numerous times while watching the video, following along to the audio and video precisely. Maybe one day I will hit the sweet spot and have the transmission fluid at the required temperature. Coolant temperature gauge is at the usual "warmed up" position every time.
The transmission fluid needs to be above 120*, and that should happen no problem after 10 minutes of driving. The biggest reason it fails to relearn is not enough pressure on the brake. If you have any pending codes that aren't turning the CEL on it can also hinder it.
@@21mazda3turbo3 I'll try again, with break-the-pedal pressure on the brake pedal.
I got it to work. I held down the brake pedal firmly for the duration of the process. The revs went up at the point of holding the shifter forward in the downshift position. Key is to mash the brake pedal as if panic braking for dear life.
Can you do the exact same video but out of Manual mode ...
the gear switch at 57 XD
Any difference of you do it in sport mode?
Had a crazy jerking issue on my 2020 premium sedan and multiple mazda techs at dealerships had no idea how to fix it. Ended up trading it in for a 24 turbo hatch and i can feel the same jerkiness starting on this one at around 15k miles so i am here now, glad i found this, will try it out tonight
Unfortunately didn't fix the lurching and jerkiness I'm experiencing in my 2016 Mazda3. I tried it again 2 more times still nothing ☹
Tnx
Hey this was a fantastic video, I had a hard time finding info on the Mazda AWD system. I drive a CX-50. Do you happen to know if there is a way to disable the CDA?
I tried this, and wow, it works like a charm! I have a question though- is it fine to occasionally reset the transmission for a smoother ride? Thanks for the detailed video.
Was expericing some jerkiness in shifting at lower speeds and this made the car soo smooth. Very helpful! A big thank you.
This work on manual 2018 cx 5? Thanks
Great video, thanks for sharing! I have a 2017 Mazda3 (2.5L and automatic transmission) with about 135K miles on it. The car has been an absolute joy to own and work on (I do all the maintenance, tires and brakes). However, I’ve never replaced the trans fluid or the filter/pickup because I bought into the “lifetime fluid” claim. I’ve noticed harsher shifts into 3rd and 5th gears. They happen whether the car is hot or cold, although less noticeable when hot. Throttle input also seems to affect it- if I’m giving it say 50% or more throttle, it shifts smoothly. If I’m not really on the throttle, the shifts are harsh. Based on your video, I’m thinking the 3/5/R clutches are worn. What do you think?
Hello… I record my transmission data using forscan app. And i noticed when deceleration, after it shift down from 4th to 3rd gear ( around 26 kmh)torque preasure become zero… is it normal? Because it feel weird when you drive.. thank you.
*JUST DID THIS ON MY 2024 MAZDA CX-30 TURBO PREMIUM PLUS. WORKED ON MY FIRST TRY* 💪🏽 🔥🔥 Purchased it about a month ago with a little over 4K miles on it - seeing as it was used as one of Mazda in-house loaners prior to selling it made sense I would want to reset the driving analytics to my own personal driving habits. Thanks for the pro tip!
Oh cmon. Christ
Youve just saved another mazda owner 🎉❤
I just bought a 2014 cx-5 awd and im trying to solve a strange issue. whenever i start to drive the car after its been sitting the first shift from 1st to 2nd is very harsh, like a manual driver dumping the clutch. Only the first time, after that it shifts normally. i was thinking maybe its just low on fluid and so im going to do two drain and fills. it has 165,000 miles.
This process worked on my mazda 3 2018. Thanks! Just watch watch he does and copy it. The last step after hold manual + for 5 seconds you are supposed to then hold manual - for 5 seconds until the m1 turns into an M on the cluster. He mispoke in the video but did the correct action.
In my 2016 Mazda3 I notice that jolt coming to a stop from higher speeds, like normal traffic. It's not every time but sometimes as I come to a stop, there's a good amount of engine braking, then around 5-10mph it'll jolt pretty hard forwards, and I have to push down the brake further as it also gains some forward momentum when this happens
Makes you wonder what the hell is going on with these transmissions
