It's been a while since I did a vlog, so I threw this one together to show you part of my day and share where I am with doing more of what makes me excited! I actually just finished a film score the other week and have been loving the extra free time. I also picked up a new hobby! “I started pursuing film composing late” & why it’s okay
Переглядів 42321 день тому
Many of you know that I didn't realize I wanted to do film composing until I was in my early 20s. While I did have piano lessons growing up and attended orchestra concerts, I always felt like composing was for geniuses and child prodigies. Being self-taught didn't help my confidence either. 3 years after getting my first film scoring job in 2021, I feel like I'm finally starting to embrace wher...
Journaling Helped Me Become a Film Composer

In this video, I share how journaling helped me continue to pursue film composing professionally and reflect along the way. I'm really grateful that I took the time to document this because I now get to look back and appreciate how far I've come since I started. I highly recommend every film composer to document their journey whether that be by creating UA-cam videos or journaling. At the end o...

    When I was 13 and just starting out on my musical path I really wanted to be a film composer. However, back then, the late 70s we did not have all the tech and access to all the resources and opportunities that exist today and coming from an impoverished background I did not even have anything to play music on so that I could listen and learn. Home recording and video making were non existent. My dream was somewhat shelved. But I did go to art school, then studied Jazz arranging and composing and got round to writing music for several plays. It is great to see that such a career is no longer beyond those with the desire to go into it these days. I have not given up my interest but my objectives are different. I write and arrange songs focussing on non digital based approaches so I score on paper and write only for instruments I have access to in the real world. At the moment that is my voice (and harmonies) and guitars. I keep my writing minimal, but it is always composed within the scope of being able to expand it when I have the motivation or chance to use it for something. So basically I write for myself. It is also my leisure activity of sorts, though I have a regime of sitting down everyday at the same time to work. 5:30am and dedicate a minimum of 15 minutes to the activity before moving on to other musical tasks, though I will do more if I am in a flow state. I have plans to produce video footage to which I can add my own soundtracks, just for experimental purposes. I noticed Max Richter did something similar with some of his recent works. I could not be a jobbing composer, though the plays I wrote for did give me a set of requirements; compose character music, programatic music, melodies for lyrics etc and also some sound canvases for ambient effects. Thanks for sharing your progress. I just found your channel so I will watch your other videos and look forward to seeing how you get on.

      Thank you for sharing your story! I've always wanted to hear from composers, like you, who are self-driven to write for themselves and make it work, but don't necessarily have the ideal starting point in time or life circumstances. It's honestly very inspiring that you've continued creating music for so long, because that's what I'd like to do with my life too. I also really like the idea of scoring on paper and limiting composing to the instruments I have, and experimenting more with art as well! Anyways, I hope that you find some value in the parts of my journey that I've documented. Thanks again for such a thoughtful comment! -Cheska

    🦋…wonderful and insightful as always! Sometimes I sit in the “I’m too late” pit BUT, there really is something to the whole life experience thing and its affect on perspective, risk-taking and what truly matters and is important to you! When I think of all that and everything that has lead to today, I know, 100%, I wasn’t meant to do this any earlier! I would have given up the second it became even slightly hard! Right now, is exactly when I am meant to pursue this, at the ripe old age of 35! And I feel lucky and grateful that I found it …I know not everyone does! ✨

    There's a really great quote from Hayao Miyazaki that I came across last night after editing this video that summarizes how I feel about feeling behind the kids who started their music journey young: "To children unable to start, those who have already started are a different breed, who seem to be in a video-game world. A world in which the main characters carry swords and go on an adventure where they make friends. Not only children, but adults as well, may see this as a game rather than a drama. After all, children are a true mirror of adults." Wish I had found this quote before making the video, but oh well, such is life 😂 P.S. if you noticed that I chose a picture of the piano Suzuki books instead of the violin ones for Joe Hisaishi, that was an accident but he's obviously known for his piano performances so it all works out I guess hahaha

    You know, I have always lived my life following some kind of inner, unconscious rule I wasn't really aware of, but which still keeps firing up every time I find myself having a hard time in my professional life, and this rule is simple: if you feel in your deepest that something's wrong with what you do, if you're not happy, if your activity brings you more stress, sadness, pain or even mere but prolonged boredom than joy, satisfaction and growth, it is a particular sign it is time to change. Follow your heart. Not what comes to you on a whim, but what lingers within you and patiently waits for you to make the right decision, even if it takes years. This is what happened to me a few months ago. I realized at 46 that what I was meant for is nothing else than to be a composer, and this is something I've had in me since I was a teenager. I tried every possible thing that I thought could possibly suit me professionally, and everything failed miserably. For when you're meant for one thing, it's no use trying anything else. I wish you joy and success and to love, love, love what you do. And I think I'd be happy to be one of your students. - Vincent

      Vincent! Thank you for such a lovely comment, I really resonate with your perspective. For most of my life I did feel like there was something off, and this passion for music and teaching definitely lingered in my heart for years. I'm so happy you found your way to this channel and that we're both moving towards a fulfilling life as a composer. Don't hesitate to reach out in the future, I think I'd be happy to have you as one of my students too!

    Okay so first of all the burnout part is SOOO relatable cuz you've been at it w the professional film composing, 1:1 sessions, curated courses etc so its quite natural to feel kinda 'stretched' in multiple directions and feeling burnt out (that's my assumption). Also while following your career path you might explore other avenues similar to/related to your primary field which may just end up interesting you more than what you initially thought you were interested in. Its all a part of self discovery and no shame in admitting it hehe. Proud of you for making this vid and as always, great video! :)))

    Thank you... Ive been wondering why I'm feeling so fatigued with all matters on current social media marketing as a musician. I also find the content from creating ai vids synced to your own compositions have become very generic -even though I do it myself- I also prefer seeing people take various selfies/vids in their environments, but hearing it from someone else is motivating me more to just stop cookie cutter copying what I see, and rather just do what I think I want to see.

    • @cheska_yo

      I'm glad I could help you embrace what you want to see with your social media! I feel the same way about certain formats, especially on Instagram reels. There is a game that we have to play in order to get people to watch to the end with editing and packaging the content, but I think the actual substance of whatever we put out there should be what we really want!

    CHESKA- proud of you for checking in and being honest with yourself about where you're at and where you want to go. I'm currently in a similar burnt-out-ish space... and it's funny, I'm so grateful to have made so many projects in this past year or so (including finally getting to work with you...), but I've missed making UA-cam videos. It's all I can think about sometimes, and I know the way to fix that is to just to do it. In other words, you're inspiring me to get back on here... you inspire me, periodt.

    Love these videos. Your thoughts echo mine especially lately, and I am thinking about a lot of the same sorts of things (burn out, original career goals and how they pivot over time, lifestyle, etc). Lots to digest - thanks for posting these. I can relate to so much of what you put out there. Gives me a ton to think about.

      I'm really really glad to hear this. There's absolutely no shame in changing directions and pivoting, I think it was just hard to admit that I was more interested in something that isn't directly about composing and the lifestyle I was headed towards wasn't what I wanted. I'm happy that we can all learn about this together!

    Hey Cheska, thanks for sharing this! I've also experienced moments of burnout while composing for film, and I think it's amazing that you're focusing on another music pursuit that brings you joy. I feel like it's good for our mental well-being to take a step back, rejuvenate ourselves, and find the spark again ✨

      Leah!! You are definitely right. I think I'm most excited about having the space to not do music and focus on myself, so that when I DO make music, I feel more happy and relaxed. P.S. Maybe you could make a video about how you've dealt with burnout in the past! I'd love to learn from you too 😇

  • @cheska_yo

    Edit: One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that I want to optimize for impact rather than continuing to grind it out as a film composer. There will always be the next short or feature film to work on, and it's very easy to overwork yourself in this industry. It was really uncomfortable to start saying "no" this year, but I'm starting to understand why. It might've been more obvious to you than it was to me, but I've been headed in this educator direction for quite a while now. Some of the most fulfilling moments I experienced this year had nothing to do with film scoring. The times I felt I had the most impact were when I was trying to help another composer whether they were a student in my course, a 1:1 coaching student, or one of my friends. At the end of the day, the best career is a sustainable one and sometimes that requires us to rethink our priorities and where we want to go. I hope that you found this video helpful and thank you guys for all your patience and support this year! -Cheska

    Hi Cheska, I'm a film composer too, following Marc Jovani's Momentum X training and I'm just about to look for my first gigs. Thanks a lot for your video; it's mostly inspiring! I have started a UA-cam channel to show my work (only a couple rescores for now but I'll add more along). You can check it out if you will. I'm just having trouble to have a good mix so that I can decently propose my music for sale to a filmmaker. Working on it. My question are: 1. Is it a good idea to do a bunch of rescores or is it preferable to go with putting music to indie short films like the ones you can find on The Cue Tube and make your portfolio with them? 2. Also, can you expect to make a living out of indie films, waiting for bigger contracts?

    • @cheska_yo
      @cheska_yo Місяць тому

      Hey, thanks for the comment- I really appreciate it! 1. I think after doing a couple of rescores for practice, you're better off just contacting filmmakers. It's not necessary to have a demo reel with films you've scored to start getting work. I still don't have one because I found that filmmakers like to imagine their film to your music. Just my experience, but between rescores or Cue Tube films, I'd go with Cue Tube! 2. I'm currently 4 years into scoring indie films and I think if I wanted to make a living doing just films, I could but not by doing bigger contracts. Zach Heyde is a great example of this. Quality of life and freedom is really important to me, and I don't think pursuing bigger contracts align with that. It seems like you're really interested in bigger projects, so I think if you want to go down the Hollywood and additional music route and are willing to spend the 10+ years it typically takes to become a lead composer for big contracts, check out Jonas Friedman's channel! Hope this helps!

    • @vincentdargere
      @vincentdargere Місяць тому

      @@cheska_yo 1. Ok, that's what I was thinking, too. Thanks. 2. I probably expressed myself badly. I'm not pursuing being a big, blockbluster, Hans-Zimmer-like, film-only composer at all. I mean, if my path eventually leads into becoming the next Thomas Newman or Harry Gregson-Williams, so be it, but it's not the first thing I have in mind. For now, I'm just looking for the best way of managing and seeking opportunities so as to make a decent living out of it (by "decent", I mean at least what I need to sustain my family). So it can be not only feature films, but also shorts, documentaries, ads, TV shows, video games... So, I guess you already answered my question by taking the example of Zach Heyde. Oh, and I know Jonas Friedman's channel. He gives wonderful advice about getting into the business. But you know how things are: at the beginning, you don't really know where to start! 😏

    • @cheska_yo
      @cheska_yo Місяць тому

      @@vincentdargere No problem! In that case, I think you'll find that my channel and Zach Heyde's channel are more aligned with what you're going for. It's a long journey, but you're in good company! There's many composers you've never heard of that make a living in creative ways and I'm working on highlighting more of their stories to show people what's possible.
