This Mk4 Supra Purchase Was A Complete Suprise! #2jz #supra Build #Jdm #mechanic In this video, I set out on a mission to find a Toyota Supra within a tight budget of $30K. The search leads me to a car that initially seems too good to be true, priced at $37K (down from $47K). My interest is piqued, but when I go to see it, things start to take a turn for the worse. A series of unexpected events...

Great job. Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks for watching!
I've had my '93 since '97. This is really inspirational and makes me want to fully restore mine after 260k km and 27 years of ownership!
Glad to hear it 🙂
Great video guys! I love the banter and introduction of Jimmy and Dave; it felt like I was there hanging out. There were also some really good explanations and handy hints in this clip. Thanks! Eager for the next one!
Thanks for the feedback Ash.
Awesome video keep up the great work guys
Thanks Brycee, will do 😀
Came from SupraForums, love the content man. Definitely giving me some motivation to pull my own car apart further and do extra work to make sure everything is done right.
Thanks man! It's a good box to tick. Even though these cars are pretty bulletproof, you never know what's been done to the car before you owned it.
Atleast that was my way of thinking about it, with an added bonus of looking good.
@@James_Wood_01 That is very true, I have been finding a number of weird things as I have pulled the car apart.
It's funny you mention the Supra forums. I was just there checking my knowledge of diff ratio's.
@@James_Wood_01 Great source of knowledge and information. I have a build thread in there under "TheShortGuy".
AMAZING CONTENT MAN! KEEP IT UP!
Appreciate it!
@@James_Wood_01 are you living in adelaide. Would love to do a walk around video of your projects one day
I'm located in Melbourne, you're Welcome to come down one day.
Awesome video! Really useful content for someone wanting to do this sort of work on their own car too. Nicely shot and well explained.
Thanks David, I tried to find a good balance between explaining how things work while trying to make it easy to watch for people who know already.
Long videos and step by step process are the best videos
Thanks for the feedback. I think you're right.
Nice bench ❤
Thanks 😁
This is the kind of content you need to put out😊
Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it! It's getting easier as a do it more and is becoming more natural. 🙂
😀Déjà vu
Haha yeah! I was editing the video in UA-cam studio very early in the morning and instead of cropping the last 10 seconds I accidentally deleted everything but the last 10 seconds 🤣. It a little bit of a bummer too because my Avg view duration was really high.
@@James_Wood_01 Good 'ol YT Studio 🙄 It's clunky AF. Rambling... I'm not into Supras at all, tbh I think most JDM is massively overrated and not interesting unless one grew up on Playstation , but I totally understand the attraction. I follow 500 odd content creators and subscribed to Tart because you make enjoyable content (camera framing and edit skills is where many fail) and you do some crazy great work. Wishing you the best with this channel 👍
Wow, thanks. The editing is something I have fun have fun with. Hopefully, in the future, when I move on to the next car, it is something more to your taste. Thanks again, @CathodeRayNipplez
Green one is still for sale, seller playing silly buggers me thinks! I know your pain, looked at so many cars I’m about to give up 🙄
Yeah I noticed that! I'm glad now that I didn't buy it. It was rubbish compared to the white one I bought.
@@James_Wood_01 looks like a good pickup for sure. Not adverse to a project myself. Great production quality with your Vids 🤙🏼 the time and effort you put into definitely comes through.
Thanks mate, I'm glad it shows. You're right it's a lot of work. What have you got on the go at the moment?
Hey I wouldn't mind buying some parts from you
If I end up stripping the car I'll let you know.
If you can make it technical video on every little step would be super awesome
My brother made this suggestion to do some how to video's in short form.
If you want to sell the fury ecu I would love to buy it for my project supra
If I end up pulling it out I'll let you know. 🙂
Good stuff mate! I'm currently restoring my mk4 as a side project/hobby and this will inspire me a lot more. Looking forward to your future videos! cheers (=
Thanks mate! I'm glad to hear that, its not an easy task to take on. Good luck with your project.
wow
This'll be great 😃
Thank you!
@@James_Wood_01 If you need some parts DM me on IG and I can try help, I have quite abit
Glad to see the hoarding of more Supras rather than stripping down for parts!!! :D Love the Aristo as well, such an awesome luxobarge. We did get the Lexus SC's here as well :) also Supra is from Latin not Japanese! But still good points. We also had TEMS in the A70s for the suspension etc. And yes I'm sitting here on the internet nitpicking tiny points instead of working on my own supras ahaha. Honestly if you can get the factory 4/2 brakes they're plenty good enough for even some of the quickest supras. Yeah they're heavyish but the weight is also nice for heat management, can get them new from NZ for super cheap compared to second hand ones as well, talk North Shore Toyota for parts not aussie dealers as we get overcharge massively. Also check out Figs in the US for arms etc if you want down the line. All the stock arms and frames looked great painted/blasted though! Great video again! Keen to see how you go with the electroplating.
Thanks for the comment. It gives me something else to consider. I definitely don't mind being critiqued, I'd rather know when I'm wrong. Even if it is from some guy who should be fixing his own Supra haha joking. Yeah, I'm a sucker for trying to save a car. Can't wait to give the electroplating a go!
Love the Supra long length in depth content Pls keep posting
Thank you! Definitely will keep posting it. Thanks for the feedback. It helps a lot.
Dude with the gearbox, go a t56 Mangnum. keep it 6 speed. Best decision i made for my supra. I use a A01B diff with a cusco 1.5way center. Put some superpro bushes in the diff and you are good to go.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm definitely doing a 1.5 way, the 2 way is over the top with what I do.
I'm struggling to get through the video due to how loud the music and audio clips are. I don't know how nobody else has seemed to point this out, but it's pretty bad. I cannot hear your narration, and it's especially chaotic when you have music and clips playing on top of it. It becomes a jumbled mess of indistinguishable noise. The video itself is great, but please work on your audio in the future. The music and sfx should be significantly less dB than your narration.
Thanks for the feedback, I know after posting the video it was a problem. There are quite a few comments relating too that problem, but you have to go through a lot of comments to find it. The sound is better on some devices compared to others. Sorry 😞
@@James_Wood_01 All good! None of us do everything perfectly every time. It's a great video, so I was a bit frustrated not being able to hear it and wanted to make sure it was brought to your attention. I really appreciate the response. That shows me that you really care about your videos and your viewers. You've earned my sub. You might be able to replace the audio in this without taking it down, but I'm not sure. Worth looking into, because I'd imagine you'd retain more viewers that way.
Thanks 😊. I did look into it, because of the complexity with the audio in the back end, the limited editing in youtube studio doesn't allow for the edit 🥲. Thanks for the help.
Make a detailed video on it
Thanks for commenting, what detail do you think I should show?
If this was meant to be the donor car, now the other one is
Haha 😄, it feels a bit like that. But I'm on a mission to finish all the projects I started as when it comes to starting something and not finishing, I'm a serial offender. The Supra is only the beginning! Lol
@@James_Wood_01 I've had my NA for 6 months, still runs like a pig and looks like a dogs dinner, you'll do better than me I'm sure
Keep it going.
I'm leaning towards that. I might need a 3rd😅
Subbed for more supra content. I wish I got a deal when I bought mine haha
Haha, yeah they are crazy expensive now.
Enjoying the vid. There is some sus people down that way trying to sell some lemon's. not a bad car you got be on the look out as some hard top stuff will not for on the aero.
Thanks mate! Yeah, I dealt with some sus people that's for sure! Most were good people though.
Why the hell anyone would want an old Supra or why they command such stupid money in Au baffles me no end but the algorithm got me here and I watched to the end. Good luck with the chanel dude. It was fun. 👍
Thanks! Honestly sometimes it babbles me too.
I like how your video style is so informative in terms of the editing the has a good pace to it unlike most videos that are super fast paced and do not go over in great detail like yours
I appreciate that!
please start on your aerotop project
I'll be working on it in the next episode, but are still undecided about what to do straight up 😅
love the supra content mate. pls keep them coming
Thanks mate, will do!
You found an absolute gem and I'm jealous! Got my 88' Supra in 21' for $8K, but just doing this kind of stuff to it (It's stock NA Auto and the motor is still completely stock) I'm at $24K now and it STILL needs paint lol. So after paint is done, I'll be at your price point with a fairly slow car. Always a 2J option, but those costs will be massive.
Thanks man, it was definitely worth the search, and being able to drive a Supra again makes me feel alive! I feel you on that! You're not alone with the spending more than the value of the car on the car, haha 😄
@@James_Wood_01 BTW, was surprised at the quality of the vid and effort you put into this for such a small channel, you got a sub. (Oh I'm already subbed...)
Thanks, really appreciate it 🙏. Making the videos is a hobby I enjoy and I always aim to male something enjoyable to watch, atleast to the best of my ability.
Who are you and why am I subscribed, anyway I'll watch.
Thanks 😊
unfortunate clickbait title
I'm sorry you feel that way. It was definitely a shock to me!
Nice series.. looking forward to watch. I also have a rare spec targa rhd.
Oh nice! Thanks!
Subbed, might need to pick your brain with my build as well. Just started a video series, all these videos help with motivating me to start lol
Thanks 😊. I would be happy to help where I can.
I feel the same way about my MK IV but mine is a mechanically sound NA manual that runs. Body is very rough and a lot of things could do with replacing but I want it perfect. I feel you 100%
Thanks Josh 👊
Supras are now expensive it used to be reasonable to buy a pretty good one pick up second hand or discounted parts. Now it’s rediculous but if you take your time and buy as you can it’ll come together. The 8 speed is a great choice however I love the novelty of a manual I have a v161 but t56 is better considering cost replacement parts etc. if you can find a front clip from a importer could save you a lot of cash
I'm definitely torn on what type of transmission to run. I have looked at buying a front clip from overseas, but I am scared of potentially being scammed 😅.
@@James_Wood_01 if you want a great daily that does it all, super fast perfectly auto 8 speed, if you love the novelty of a manual that you could still daily or have weekend car to be different. I converted from auto to v161. Most of us have a daily and manual experience is dwindling so I’m manual for my cars. My daily vehicles are auto suv. I want to be invoked in the process at your price point my take go manual swap t56 due to price and parts availability.
It's a hard one. I don't think I'll daily this car but I say this and then who knows when I'm done. I like the Idea of an 8spd as it is a challenge because I have never personally done this before. The T56 you mention is cheap and plentiful on parts and reliable. I honestly think Ill do one thing get it completed and change it again, I'm terrible like that.
Love it! They're addictive so definitely agree it's easier to get an extra one haha, we're up to four now as it's much easier to cannibalize parts to get going and replace when available :P Fitmint out of Adelaide is now doing new floor mats (was gonna get those but ended up getting HKS), boot carpet and spare wheel covers etc. I think he's also going to do a run of new interior carpet at some stage so worth checking out!
Nice! I'll check them out. Yeah, haha, it's a good addiction! 4 supra's, what have you done with them so far?
@@James_Wood_01 yeah even just their car covers are great, got the wife one for her 34. Three A80s, my original is a 3S powered time attack/sports sedan build. One is a weekender SZ-R we got cheap just before covid. The third is the wife's that she wants to restore the veilside kit on and make it a gloriously disgusting 90s showcar haha. Then she also has an A70 resto on the go. :)
That is mad! I'm not gonna lie, I'm pretty envious of that. Well done 👌.
a twin turbo would be really really unique compare to a single set up
I agree, I thought about doing a modern take of the original sequential turbo setup or even a compound turbo setup.
@@James_Wood_01 especially here in Australia, let alone victoria
Great video! I'm in a very similar dilemma, with my r33 gtr, nearly 8 years in the making, but as usual, family and other things take priority so it just collects dust
Thank you! R33 GTR wow 👌. I bet it's hard to see it collecting dust. The sacrifice also shows you're a pretty good bloke. I hope you get your time soon.
Can confirm 600hp on one wheel is not ideal
Sketchy as Right! Still running on a single, or did you change your setup?
@@James_Wood_01 Still running open as finding a lsd is quite hard, thought about getting a OS Giken from from Japan but $$. I'm based in NZ and occasionally a torsen from a soarer pops up which is also another good option
@@James_Wood_01 Also I would advise against the cd009, the TR6060 is a much better alternative and can hold alot more power/torque
Yeah, it's all many. I don't know how accurate this is, but a friend of mine wreckens the lsd in a BRZ/86 fits nearly directly in. Not sure how much power they are good for though.
You will get there bro and all the hard work ,stressful days and doubts will all disappear god willing !
Thanks bro! I believe that to 🙏
Excited to see this project come to fruition! Between Covid tax and the American market opening up for old school imports, the prices of these and so many cars have gone through the roof!
Thanks Ash. Those things you mentioned definitely made my dream a bit harder. 😅
So I can't see half of the message ... What does it say? The username and "subscribe" button are obscuring it. Edit: Subbing doesn't help
I noticed that after posting the short 😅 some devices are fine, others not so much. The seller replied to me explaining a guy from the US had just put a deposit on the Supra I was going to look at. 🥲
@@James_Wood_01 ah, of course ... Sucks, man ><
Whether you’re a JDM fan or not, the MK4 Supra is still a car that’ll put a smirk on your face when you see it in person
So true!
Half the price of us supras
I bet! That's probably why you guys buy our ones. 🥲🙂
that 1986 one looks much better than the mk 4 imo cheaper too
I do love the mk3 but I'm looking for a donor car for my mk4, so I can get her on the road again. 🙂
Subbed! Excited to watch this series.
Thanks 😊 I can't wait to show you what's next!
I'm only on yt for all the supra builds. aaaaanother. lfg!!!
That's definitely a good reason to get on youtube! Thanks 😊
i am almost at the finish line...just need recaro seats, bbk and someone to weld turbo pipes...i've own it for 5yrs!
I am so jealous, haha 😄 . That is cool. Being so close must be exciting. Well done.
