I was shocked to hear that someone that trailered their bike 183 miles to get here, won an award for the furthest travelled, rather than someone that actually rode 180 miles to get here. That's just not in the true sprit of things at all 😁

My father had a 1948 Ariel 350, HNN481 to which he eventually added a single seat Watsonian sidecar for my mother. That bike had a solid rear and girder forks' The first brand new bike I bought was a 1955 350cc Ariel Red Hunter XRA632 which cost 185 British pounds. I was a member of the ILKANDIS Motocycle club in Derbyshire and had some difficulty keeping up with their mostly 500cc twins of various makes so I later on swapped the 350cc for a 1955 650cc Ariel Huntmaster (I have forgotten its license plate number now - sorry) which was the best bike I ever owned. The 1955 bikes all had the same frame and running gear and it was the last year before the headlight 'hood' was introduced in 1956. I moved to NZ in 1962 and was unable, due to financial and space restrictions, unable to bring my bike with me. I was able to do all the maintenance myself, my father was . among other skills, a mechanic and he taught me to completely dimantle and reassemble the engines and gearboxes of all my different bikes. The only thing that beat me was building spoked wheels. The last bike I had in NZ was a Honda CL175, an 'adventure' style semi offroader which would go literally anywhere.

The hood over the headlight was introduced in 1956. I had a new 1955 350cc Red Hunter (XRA632) which cost GBP 186. At the time, my father had a 1948 350cc Ariel Hunter with girder forks (HNN481). I later traded my bike for a 1955 650cc Huntmaster which had the same frame and running gear as the 350cc. Sorry, I can't remember its plate number .All the bikes were very easy to maintain and service and were very reliable. I emigrated to NZ in 1962 and had to leave my bike behind as we were limited for space for our belongings. In those days we had a six weeks voyage via Cape Town, the Indian Ocean and the Australian coast., instead of one or two days by air.

Always liked the old British iron, had a Norton ES2 in my late teens. It's the way they look at the obstacle and go "two bangs should do that one, you just relax I've got this".

I had the pleasure of observing section numbers 7 and 24 of this trial. These two sections were quite different to those you have shown so clearly the trial used a good variety of section types. Thanks for posting, it's nice to see sections other than those I observed on.

I had. BSA c15 as first bike it was cr** in fact all the British bikes apart from my brothers Vellocette venom ( which I wrecked in 1965 were cr** then onto Ducati and Moto Morini but my fav was a little Honda Benly I still think of that bike even after all those years

Is it just me or do the smaller 2 stroke bikes seem to be a bit better for this sort of course? Don't get me wrong I love all of these older machines but am leaning towards the 2 strokes and am on the verge of buying suchlike, I have my eye on a Sprite but then I keep seeing the four stokes from the tiger cubs up, which would be the better for a novice?

Nice to see a Matchless amomg the bikes. They say that of the 90 odd Ariels made something like 250 still exist 😆
