Nikon Coolscan 9000 - don't damage this connector!
This is one of the most common failures which occurs during DIY servicing the Coolscan 9000.
Result can be a damaged connector and a worthless scanner. In german, das ist der Super GAU ...
Repairing is difficult and maybe impossible.
(does not apply to Coolscan 8000, here another cable connection is used)
For showing the point of interest my camera position was a bit uncomfortable for acting, explains my clumsy screw driver handling.
After watching be aware, don't pull the locking strip completely out of the connector, it must stay in place, otherwise it will break.

Here is my wet scan holder, a short overview about concept and handling. In the past Image Mechanics offered such a tray but it's no longer available. Finally you scan all formats incl. 70 mm strips.This holder has same flexible functionalities as my universal holder. It's also possible tp dry mount on AN glass side. I changed holders coding mechanism for a faster handling. By adding two recessed grips right beside the glassless masks it's much easier now to grab the strip and find the correct frame position. Printing time is extremely long and not every print ends successfully. Here is a quick and dirty video of my latest improvements. Meanwhile I changed the clamping concept, now the Focal Point glasses are fixed laterally, so the complete glass area (6x20cm) can be used for scanning. Here is my first multiformat holder for 6x6cm and 24x36mm scans, so you need only one holder for two formats. Each format(s) is/are possible, only limited by hardware of scanner.

I get orange bleeds around the edge of my scans when not masking, is this normal? Where can I buy this holder/mask setup from?
This is normal if you don't crop large transparent borders around your frame. Your CCD line scanning based coolscan can't handle this very well (real drum scanners can). Send me a mail coolscan@gmx.de ;-)
can it scan for larger format negs like 6 x 9 or even 6x17 ?
6x9 is standard, have a look at scanners specification sheet. For scanning panoramic frames you have to scan multiple times with a bit overlapping in position, later stitching together in photoshop.
So each individual frame needs to be cropped one at a time when scanned?
In post production, yes of course.

Don't buy another NIKON OEM carrier Best money I have spent OVER 4 YEARS AGO for the task of scanning film. . The newest allows scanning glassless, with Newton Glass and WET scanning ALL IN A SINGLE CARRIER.. is NOW on its way from Germany. WOO HOO!!

I can understand your wish but unfortunately there isn't enough lifetime right now to do it, please apologize.
The auto-generated German subtitles when translated to English, are actually surprisingly accurate, and should allow you to follow the video.

Bitte beim 9000 keine Komplettdemontage wie gezeigt, Spiegelreinigung nur über das Scan-Fenster. Die Gefahr der Zerstörung einer Flachbandkabelverriegelung ist zu groß. Ich habe die Beschreibung ergänzt.

Es gibt von Apple Thunderbold2fw Adapter, habe aber keine Erfahrung damit. Ein USB2fw Adapter wird den Scanner zerstören.

Just wonder - do you know anyone who is able to REPAIR the scanner for electrical problems - I have both a broken LS8000 and LS9000; somehow the computer does not recognise the scanner any more.

Wont the clear glass on the bottom cause anti-newton rings?
You are right, this depends on material brand and condition. With clear glass below you can't avoid 100% Newton rings. but sometimes it's the only solution to hold an extreme curly strip flat. That's because I prefer a glassless mask below and AN glass mask on top, in most cases the strip is bowed to the upper side.
@@coolscan Yeah i've been messing around with glassless mask and anti-newton on top, flattens very good. But for very curled film you need to clamp it tight. I've got a iece that fits tightly in my super coolscan film strip holder if I take the top clamp off. A custom-design film strip holder with a masked bottom for 35mm, with horizontal frame mask and an anti-newton glass top would be marvellous. As long as you can clamp it tight. I've got a lot of film from the 30's to 50's that has heavy curling due to storage. Any idea on how this may be designed? What is your experience on anti-newton glass pits showing up in slide film, does the depend on the brand? Regards
@@Dutchsteammachine I did a lot of 120 transparency scans (Ektachrome) and never haven't seen a difference between glassless and AN on top. Also ANglass is a bit out of focus of +0.15mm

Sorry for late response, yes, you can also insert clear+AN glasses into this holder. That's why I call it universal.

It works by itself and substitutes this .... original holder. Meanwhile an update and improved design.
