Mercruiser lower unit why it won’t go into or in wrong gear after doing water pump

Walking you thru the physics of the Mercruiser alpha drives shifting and how they work together. The lower unit can actually be in another gear than the control on the boat and that’s why it doesn’t work right if u don’t get it right. Hopefully this will save thousands of man hours!

    You need to take the points plate off and make sure your centrifugal advance weights are advancing at RPM range sometimes they rust to the plate and they don't advance your boat runs like crap 😊😊

    The only thing you skipped out on was is there a switch that connects to shifting lever that wont let engine start if not in nuetral so that boat dont scram into motion while attempting to start.also the wires coming into that red plug can you show what wires go to were on the block and what color it is.i got a used outboard with no control box and wires red plug cut at closest area to motor.no idea what starts what..it has the usaull purple,gray,black n yelllow,green,red,yellow and green i think.any tuturial will help just wanna hear it run.snooky pa.its a 90s johnson 40 off a pontoon boat!!

      apologies - i was focusing on the motor components. Well 2 strokes are interesting, unlike a 4 stroke where key OFF REMOVES 12v POS to ignition to kill motor, a 2 stroke key off ADDS GROUND to short everything out because the ignition is self produce simply by the engine running - you can start a 2 stroke and remove the entire harness plug and it will keep running!! That safety switch is a backup OFF switch which basically connects a ground to the "kill" wire at the back of the motor - only difference is it wraps around your wrist in case of an emergency/accident :)

      @@SocalMarineUSA yes you covered the motor components very well,i was just certain there was the nuetral safety switch on two strokes that will prevent ignition if in gear.yes i would assume its same as kill feature and grounds out system electronically. You know ur two strokes well obviously!!

    How would you test the coil pack on a 1994 Evinrude v4 88?

    • @SocalMarineUSA
      @SocalMarineUSA 24 дні тому

      check ohms and compare it to specs, cana lso swap it with a cylinder thats running well - if the coil works in a new location the problem is further upstream, the coil is the last component adter the stator and trigger.. so work your way up. a bad lead cana lso cause issues.. if u can run it at night look for sparks around the wires/coils.

    I have a 70's Evinrude V4 115hp which uses the same Powerpack 4 ignition module exactly as shown. I had spark at coils 1&3, but not 2&4, so I swapped the corresponding trigger wires and then had spark at 2&4, which eliminated the module as causal. I checked the resistance from the triggers to the terminals with no difference in ohms, so I concluded the flywheel magnet was somehow faulty. I removed the key from the camshaft and reinstalled the flywheel 180 degrees off. Viola, I successfully verified the bad flywheel. After close inspection, I found that there was a crack apparently affecting the magnetic polarity. Replaced and problem solved, no adapter necessary. Thanks for a great video. 😅

    Great video I have a 1986 6 cylinder 115. It has good spark on all cylinders it starts and idols good all cylinders are firing. When I start to accelerate it begins to misfire and lacks power. If I bring the throttle back to slow it runs fine. Just cleaned the carbs and has new plugs. I have checked the ohmic value on the red red/white and blue blue/white wires and the blue wire is out of speck 32k ohms. According to your video the blue works are for the low speed so I’m a bit confused. Perhaps you could shed some light on this fore me. Much appreciated

    • @SocalMarineUSA
      @SocalMarineUSA Місяць тому

      if the blue /red ohms are out of spec the stator is likely bad- a DVA adapter will show you any issues, they usually fail to produce enough juice at certain rpms and it will show a drop right before power loss. The parts are so cheap that I would do the statpr and trigger at the same time - because the trigger wires move every time the throttle moves they tend to wear out more.. the stator is a stationery unit with no moving parts. over time heat+vibration and very low batteries/too much amp draw can also take them out- the insulation can also break down and cause an internal arc killing power. hth-

    Can the high rpm leg be tested just from cranking the engine or does it have to be running in that rpm range?

    • @SocalMarineUSA
      @SocalMarineUSA Місяць тому

      sorry - i missed the high rpm leg part- it should be making power from idle as the fw is spinning across the magnets and windings- scroll thru the chart here to your motor year/model and see the specs, blue/red have the same readings- www.cdielectronics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/CDI-Electronics-DVA-Charts.pdf

    • @SocalMarineUSA
      @SocalMarineUSA Місяць тому

      cranking is fine - since alot of the time the motors are hardly running. You can take the spark plugs out to increase the cranking speed and just ground the plug wires out so the energy has somewhere to go.. that makes it spin alot higher and the battery doesnt struggle as much.

      could be colder weather, hotter weather, gas is not that stable these days and breaks down in a few months. cold starts on carbs is just something everyone needs to know - thanks for watching. wrong profile but its my vid. Applies to hotrods too, few pumps on the gas before starting- thats why u pump the throttle first to add some fuel for the first start/run in a while.

    As a test, Could you apply a 4 VDC pulse to the trigger wire input for a channel/circuit and see if you read zero ohms resistance (or very close) between the stator input and the output lug of the channel/circuit you are applying the 4VDC trigger to? Shouldn’t the SCR close for that Channel or circuit in order to output the stator input voltage to the coil thus firing the spark plug? I am performing this on a Tohatsu CDI and it changes from infinity to reading Megohms of resistance when I apply the trigger to the CDI. This leads me to believe the SCR is likely damaged in the CDI as I would have expected the SCR to read a short when the trigger is applied, and an open when the trigger is removed. Basically it just switches the input from the stator to the output to a coil, right?

  • @littletoze
    @littletoze Місяць тому

    Just one thing I wasn’t clear on, if I was to switch any of the trigger wires to the switch pack, that would prove the switch pack is good, or bad, and it would be the trigger that was bad? Do I have that right?

    • @SocalMarineUSA
      @SocalMarineUSA Місяць тому

      the pack is just a channel like an amp- so if you have GOOD consistent spark on cyl 1 and not on 3, if u swap pack wires AND coil wires and the problem moved the pack is ok and trigger bad. if the problem didnt move the pack is bad and trigger likely ok. the way to test a pack is to use a working cylinders trigger and coil wires to change between channels. AAlternatively you can use the "bad" cylinder to see if its bad on another pack "channel" - if it suddenly works then the "bad" one might actually be good but running through a bad pack channel.

    at 17:24 you say "If you see 0.3v of power coming through this pack" but how can ANY power come through the pack if you have already disconnected the black/yellow wire from the pack and connected it to your meter? Since you not actually showing the process, maybe this needs more clarification?

    • @SocalMarineUSA
      @SocalMarineUSA 2 місяці тому

      so you have to remove the black/yellow kill wire from the pack and attach the multimeter lead to the WIRE (not the pack), and see if positive voltage is coming down the kill wire when you turn the key to OFF - it should pass ground not positive when turned off (and if so .3v MAX positive - how thats possible im not sure perhaps some units have wiring that ties the ground to positive maybe though a coil or something) but usually you just dont want positive at all or more than 0.3v POSITIVE, thats what the test is for. Faulty wiring or switches cause this and its a pack killer.. esp on johnsons!

I have no idea how they claim that it's painable within 30 minutes when this stuff is still tacky to the touch after more than 2 days! And no I did not use a lot at all the bead that squeezed out is no more than a quarter of an inch thick.
