Is he an unlikeable character? Definitely, cuz he's got nothing much to go for him as you said and he's also gross. Is he sexist? Hmmm I think most likely just misguided by his father who may or may not be sexist depending on whether he's aware of how he's treating his wife or both him and his wife believe that these are the roles they have to take based on the way they were raised.
