Something that I think was lost in the later games was how surprisingly in-depth some of the psychos are in the first game. Adam, Cliff, and Steven are all amazing and I feel like the only psycopath who arguably lives up to their characterization later on is the mail man from 2, and Chuck from OTR but I think that's cheating.

Kent always reminds me of Scout from Team Fortress 2 for some reason

I finished dead rising just yesterday for the first time, and I must say how the psychopaths were my favourite part of the game. Not even the fights, just the satisfaction of defeating them only to watch more cutscenes with them, and understand them more. Carlito for a main antagonist was not as nearly as interesting as other side psychopaths like Cliff and Steven, I was absolutely fascinated by their unreal creepy nature. The writing and acting simply make this game the only thing worth the playing.

Like the book says, these monsters are "Manifestation of Delusions". The only exception from this is Cybil.

I mean I assumed in SH1 the monsters were manifestations of Alessa/Cheryl’s trauma and fears. Harry was just an unfortunate innocent bystander in this one. Same goes for 3 with Heather being a reincarnation of the good part of Alessa. Which I would assume is Cheryl. She didn’t do anything wrong, but had no choice but to go there because of her unfortunate connection to it. In all the other games, it usually calls someone who either did something seriously wrong. Or had severe past trauma. Travis from Origins seemed like just a guy with bad trauma. But if you get the bad ending. It insinuated that he’s a serial killer. I think that’s only in the reality you get the bad ending though. If you get the good ending he’s not I guess? But yeah, there’s a lot of other more complex characters that I could go through. But that’s for a longer conversation.

ngl the first like 3/4ths of this game were boring as hell to me, just lots of running around mostly empty spaces. the sequel was a vast improvement. and im eager to play its remake

As much as I absolutely love SH2R I really wish they did things in order and remade SH1 first.

Here's what I would diagnose each psychopath with: Adam trauma-induced psychosis Cletus alcohol-induced paranoia Convicts antisocial personality disorder Kent narcissistic personality disorder Cliff PTSD (flashback-episode) Jo malignant narcissism (combined traits: sadistic, antisocial, narcissistic) Sean narcissistic personality disorder Paul social anxiety disorder with paranoid features Hall Family antisocial personality disorder (Roger and Jack), some symptoms of mental abuse (Thomas) Larry psychosis, possible onset before the outbreak Brock psychopathy Carlito and Isabela are complex and I’m not sure about them, if I’m honest - they might not end up diagnosed with any kind of condition if evaluated.

The convicts are good examples of sociopaths: violent, impulsive, chaotic and very poor integration into society Brock is a good example of a psychopath: emotionally cold, calm, organized and well-integrated into society

Roger and Jack and aptly named after two characters in "The Lord of the Flies" as they attempt to coerce and manipulate others into complying with their evil, brutal ways. In the deluxe remaster, Thomas reveals that his relatives have been looking forward to hunting humans for ages.

Paul is not a bad person indeed, although arguably, his pyromania does hint at some kind of mental issues that cannot be entirely explained by his paranoia and insecurity, unless of course you interpret it as his way of trying to regain control and be powerful.

I am not entirely convinced that Sean is "delusional" or just a manipulative bastard (which cult leaders tend to be in real life).

Larry so truly sees Frank as a genuine customer that he will not fight him unless Frank attack first. However, I've read somewhere that supposedly the deluxe remaster hints at the fact that Larry has been selling human meat to his customers even before the outbreak began - that would imply that Larry was mentally ill even before the outbreak. I believe there is some merit to that theory, as he seems very non-chalant about zombies in general, unlike others suffering from psychosis such as Adam who is shown to be terrified of them.

Fun fact about Kent: They removed the sexy-picture challenge from the deluxe remaster, probably to avoid sexism-allegations. Ironically though, it only robs Kent of a trait of his: his sleaziness.

The dynamic between Frank and Kent is oddly reminiscent of the one between Peter Parker and Eddie Brock from "Spider-Man", right down to their profession. Also, while Frank becomes less of a jerk throughout the story, Kent (while a big one from the get go) goes off the deep end. Kent also proves to be beyond saving in his dying moments, where he massively overestimates the value of a picture of his dying self, showing how self-important he is (and how unrealistic that self-assessment truly is).

Can we be 100% sure the convicts did break out of prison? If so, where are all the other inmates? There are no prisoner-zombies around, does that imply all the others decided to leave the area? I like to think they were being on route to being transferred to a different prison, and then somehow broke free from their vehicle.

Was Steven's mentioning of "customers" before his death meant to show he's regained his senses like Cliff? I'm not so sure, if his last line "Clean up! Register Six!" is meant to be more than just a joke by the devs department.

It's not entirely clear how much of Cletus' paranoia is due to the outbreak and how much of is due to his alcoholism, both of which are likely to cloud his judgment. While many point out his distrust of people is not unjustified, I believe his ironic death is meant to show that Cletus has been unreasonably suspicious of people as he fails to pick up on Frank's peaceful intentions until the very end.

there is a slightly less sympathetic angle to Adam's story: he is so afraid of the zombies that he would rather kill a human being than facing hordes of zombies again, giving him a bit of a cowardly nature. It is somewhat hinted at by his failure to save his audience from the zombies as well, especially given his impressive set of fighting skills. Adam might be suffering from survivors' guilt because of his realizing that he could have saved them, if it hadn't been for his cowardice.

Jo's theme is all about "gonna feel like hell again", so I'm willing to say she's not just driving by lust, sadism and lack of empathy, but also a deep unhappiness with her own appearance and life. She clearly wants to be like the women she tortures out of envy and short of that possibility, she instead decides to make them as miserable as she is. Jo also wears shades, both to seem more cool and to hide her insecurity behind (fittingly, in her death scene, she loses her shades).

Carlito may be my favorite villain and psycho due to how his act of terrorism became an important role to Dead Rising 1 that then extends further into Dead Rising 3, even tho Nick Ramos wasn’t mentioned in the list of orphans. But TBH, Cliff will always remain my most favorite due to how realistic his PTSD insanity is, then after you defeated him, he regains his senses and see all of his wrongdoings. Not to mention, him breaking down and hearing him being close to death did made me feel emotional since he was a good old man deep down, and I feel like a monster for killing such a guy, even tho there was no way to help regain his senses. Also, since we don’t know too much about Cliff, I can picture him being a wholesome grandfather to his own granddaughter, and how her and his whole family help to push away his own demons. But of course, when the outbreak happened and Cliff heard his granddaughter scream in dying agony, his own demons come back to haunt and possess him, possibly telling him that the “war is not over. Not for him.” I can picture him trying to imagine the entire mall as one massive battlefield, Chrislip’s hardware store as an “armory and his own hunting grounds”, kinda like how Rambo treated his whole entire ranch as his own battlefield in “Last Blood”, and of course, Cliff sees survivors as Vietcong soldiers and zombies as possibly hostile Vietcong soldiers, which explains the hanging bodies. TBH, Cliff deserves to have his own spinoff side story to show what his life was like before the outbreak, then once the outbreak strikes. It should be like how Hunter of Dead Rising 3 got his own side-story before his 10 minutes of bike leader tyranny has been put to an end after being defeated by Nick Ramos.

I played this game from the age of 6 to 25 and every single psychopath absolutely scared the piss out of me but now you throw all this extra shit in the mix and it just makes them all the more sad and now I gotta feel bad about killing them thanks a lot! In all seriousness I've been waiting for someone to tell me every single back story to these characters, true or not I loved it and I'm glad this game is getting it's proper recognition

More silent hill

silent hill 1 was an amazing horror game (from a very garbage publisher) but i absolutely hate the sh fans in japan at the time cause they were complaining that the second game wasn't about or didn't closely follow the cult story line of sh1 so the third game in my opinion was the weakest of the series as a result. idk it's plot got in the way more then anything

Been playing sh1 recently. The fact you can't see everything ahead of you, makes it far more creepy.

How come you didn't do an indepth explaination of the Mumblers? I understand not going indepth of the Night Flutters and Wormhead since they're envolved form of the Air Screamer and Groaner because of the otherworld's influence. The Grey child and the Mumblers are different monsters. Nonetheless great video anyways.

About the infestation part about the creepers, I also interpreted them as a representation of The Order. The town is literally infested with the cult and multiple members hold authority positions in the town. Not to mention, in Silent Hill 2 (which confirms the creepers are not manifested by James), they have a cult symbol on their backs. The way they swarm and overwhelm people to kill them slowly is a perfect representation of what they (the cult) did to Alessa.

I watch good Silent Hill content, i'm a simple man, i subscribe.

I always saw SH as a form of "purgatory." If your soul was attached to this town in any way, and you did something wrong, you would be drawn to it like a moth to a flame. And anything you did in the real life would be brought with you and torment you, and twisted into a hellesh place. The "monsters" are manifested from your real life "crimes" and nightmares. And your being judged and forced to confront your atrocities that happened in the real world. If you die, your sent to hell. If you live, you stay in purgatory or if you "escape" and either go to heaven or back to the real world. With Harry, the monsters were actually from Alessa, and she transformed the town. And Harry was being put on trial for weither he was a good father or not, and to free Alessa and some of the people trapped in SH on the other side. And punish those that caused harm to Allessa. And to of course free his daughter "created from the Good Allesa, AKA Heather." Sadly Cybil (the cop), got mixed into this, and her fate is in your hands. In the "cannon ending," as far as SH3 goes, she dies in SH. With James, he brought his wife to SH, and somehow their souls were attached to that town. And when James kills Mary, a part of her is recreated in SH and starts to take over Maria's mind and body. And James is judged for what he did and face his deamons, and was given a choice of how things will transpire. Same goes for the other three characters. Laura either saw a normal town or an empty town, and since she was pure of heart, didn't see any monsters. But only those that came seeking SH. As for Heather, Dark Allessa wants her to come back to SH to finish what her father didn't, at the cost of her father's life (among others) and the trauma she endures. Now my memories of these games are a bit vague, but the gist is still there. And its unclear if any of the "monsters" are real or are really regular people, but masked to look like monsters. And the monsters are just in the person's head.

So far loving the video since I'm a huge Silent Hill fan. I even consider Silent Hill 1 the best of them all, even though my first Silent Hill game was 2. Explaining almost everything to the truth, just missed some details thats all since the Puppet doctors/nurses were also being control by Dr Kaufman because of his drug operations and why the Lisa story is even more sad 😢. It's hard to find great Silent Hill videos of lore because the content creator does their own opinion and can get the lore wrong, especially Silent hill 2 because they didn't play Silent Hill 1 to understand the history of Silent Hill in the first place.
