Why is that? I was terrible in school because it's just spelling tests or finding stuff in the biology chapter, and memorizing it for the exam. But I have an engineering degree, and I would do better the more advanced the class and the worse everyone else would do. I would always work from the definitions. But then in the real world everyone still hates you because they can't do any of those things. That means they can't be creative at all. They can't create anything from scratch such as a house or a car because the don't have math skills. Then everyone gets mad at you if you're not just trying to make the same big mac.

I dont think learning more methods to solve a problem would increase the understanding a person has for why you can do that And to understand why is mutch more useful than a method

I (tail end of gen X) tried to help my 2nd grader do his math homework. A simple straight forward addition or subtraction problem was eye opening for me to watch when I first saw him do it. There were columns and numbers on the side that seemingly had nothing to do with the problem, just gibberish, but magically he would get the right answer. I can’t complain since he gets the answer, but it seems so convoluted with extra steps rather than just doing it and getting it done in a straight forward manner. It’s to the point I’m afraid to try to help him because I worry the teacher is emphasizing the methodology/process as more the point of the math than just the answer. I don’t want to interfere with the teachers process by contaminating him with regular math in case this new common core process is foundational for math in later grades. I have said a few times “ok, you CAN do it that way, but why not just do this instead?” Baddabing baddaboong it’s straight forward and done. But then he looks at me like I just spoke French to him and I just have to let him do his own thing.

You can't tell we didn't neither, it could had been a mutant one or at one point a chimpanzee sleep with a monkey and there you got, you can explain the white color too, aren't dogs descendents from wolf still dogs have diffrent shapes too. One thing I can tell you that every human or animal it's smarter in his own habitat they consider wolf smarter why because they are a group they work as a pack, but dogs are more smart near humans because that's were they live, same for humans if you put a human in a chimpanzee jungle they could kill him, but wouldn't humans do the same if a chimpanzee comes in the city, ye there are alternatives to put him to sleep but in most cases we would kill him.

I'm surprised at how uninformative this video was, considering the presenter. I would've liked to see an example of _how_ this system is supposed to help children understand math at a more fundamental level.

If tobacco caused cancer then every single individual that smoked would have had cancer. Many family members who have smoked since their teens and 20s, now in their late 80s and have never had cancer. They are still cognitively sound also. The oldest being 89!

I think "level of relatedness" and "closest/ furthest relative" is a slightly misleading term in its limited scope for Phylogeny- it says nothing about genetic/ phenotypic similarity and nothing about temporal proximity in terms of evolution. There are several concepts that one could plausibly expect to be included by a term like "relatedness" that aren't and that probably bears explicitly discussing early on.
