Karkhanedaar : Vanishing Traditions of Old Delhi - A Documentary
“Archiving Living Residue of a Lost World: Medieval City’s Pre-Modern Occupations in Post Modern Times” (2020-23) is a documentary-series of case-studies of people who make a living by engaging in traditional occupations which were passed on to them as "family traditions" at the medieval city of Shahjahanabad/Old Delhi. These traditional occupations are dependent on physical labour, use minimal technology and their relationships with their kinsfolk, employers and others around them are based on old world social and emotional networks. Technology has played a substantial part in loss of livelihood and business for them as most of these occupations are almost on the brink of disappearance today.
In this documentary series artisans and traditional crafts people talk about the nuances of their professions and their problems. Very few of them want their family traditions to be passed on to their children as for most survival is a struggle. The following are the excerpts from the full interviews of the twenty-six case studies available on this channel.

Qissa Kulfi Ka : Kulfiwale of Shahjahanabad
Переглядів 603Рік тому
Kulfi is a frozen milk dessert which traces its origins to the 17th century Shahjahanabad. Mirza Hadi Ruswa mentions in his epic "UmraoJaan Ada" (1922, pg. 19) about "do qufliyaa'n nosh ki gayi'n". Qufli, (probably hinting at the qufl or lock like make of the kulfi mould) changed to Qulfi/kulfi later on. We spoke with the kulfi-mould and frame karigars at the kulfi frame making karkhanas at Laa...

It's important for society to recognize the value of traditional crafts and support those who continue to practice them. It is quite unfortunate that the skilled craftspeople of Shahjahanabad, like the metal engravers on the pavements of Lal Kuan are struggling to make a living due to the impact of machines on their businesses. Mohammad Shakeel, Mohammad Naeem and Alauddin share their experienc...

Once a book is printed, the process of prolonging its life includes getting it bound. Mohammad Zakir explained and showed us the entire process of putting the pages together and tur...

A thing prominent in these technologies is their sustainability, ability to let components last long and still be repairable in the end. On other hand, the planned obsolescence in new kinds of equipment is just making world unsustainable by making things last less.

Finally I know the name of that thing I searched so long for...hehe... 5 years training to learn it is tooo much... Furthering this calls for vocational training institutes so hobby clubs could be formed. So just like pottery got rebranded into a hobby, several other occupations need that. It feels weird to see modern India having super-west type hobbies like golf & fishing; these might suit more for those hobby seekers.

I think later on one should look into some big publishing houses like OUP, Cambridge press, like how they preserve their old books. Is there any different sort of machinations that they follow? There is one web series called "You", bookkeeper in that web series has a separate cage for old books in the basement with defined temperature. These are some aspects which could be very interesting if anyone can cover this. Though, this video is very informative.
